@@terry4144 so where's your video on how to apply plaster big mouth? Yep, what I thought, you don't have one and lack the balls to make one. Go ahead, show us all how its done. I can't plaster for shit, my dad could and I've tried but I disliked it enough to employ guys to do it when I ran my own business in the UK. Now I live in the US, plastering doesn't happen, its all drywall. But come on mate, show us how good you are.
Absolutely, i don't understand these negative comments, it's obvious he speaks to beginners or ppl who have never tried it before, so why are all these "pro plasterers" losing their mind??? Because of him i will actually try to do the job myself. Even if it's a small job, at least i will try
@sumisumi-by8xv I've been doing plastering for 22 years and I like this method for going over existing walls. Half of the job is being able to put plaster on a hawk and then go from hawk to trowel to wall. I wish you the best of luck in plastering your walls.
I’ve been in the building game for 37yrs and there’s not much that I don’t get involved in including plastering, however, this was a great tutorial pointing out all the important details that will enable a capable novice to plaster a wall. Well done!
Use a medium pile Roller sleeve. You don’t get half the texture and it’s so much easier . If doing ceilings use a pole and you can lay it all on from the floor. Use speed skim with pole too.
I tried this today after many failed attempts with plaster.. absolute game changer! Thank you so much for this tutorial. So easy and quick to complete 😁🙌
Bit the bullet and bought a Pentrillo plaster roller after seeing your vids..I can plaster normally..been doing it for years.. however.. I had a go on a 20m2 ceiling at home.. 1. Great bit of kit for getting the plaster on quick and semi evenly.. I found it going off a bit quick on the first coat and dragging when flattening as I’d done the whole ceiling..brought it back with a slurry sponge ok.. 2. Second coat I rollered a meter strip then trowel flattened it and worked my way across the ceiling.. this solved the problem fine.. 3. Tried my speed skim over it on both coats.. it dragged it off.. so put it back in the van..😂 4. The roller sheds fibres a bit.. so you have to pick them out.. not really an issue.. 5. Definitely a good bit of kit for a DIY to get plaster on the ceiling without it going all over the floor.. Cheers.. I’ll be using it again on a paid job..
This is a really excellent explanation. My mate, who's a hugely experienced builder, showed me how to plaster one time but he was just taking so much stuff for granted - he does a brilliant job but without thinking about it so his explanation missed about half of what one really needs to know. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
Excellent, clear, concise explanation I could have done with years ago. Thank you. Cup of tea looked milky and insipid though. Can’t be expert at everything I suppose!
Hi Blaine, Fiirst time viewer to your channel, I’ve been a general builder for the past 25 years, The last couple years I have undertaken my own plastering projects, ie medium size wall’s & small ceiling’s just so I don’t have to get a skilled plasterer in for a small job, Thanks for taking the time to make this video it’s been a great help 👍
Great intro to plastering mate , I'm an interior fitter , kitchen, bedrooms etc and would like to learn plastering to eventually be able to start a business in the future of home improvements 👍

Glad i found you mate. You have a natural way of teaching and it is very appreciated. Now i fill some encouragement to plaster my shed office 😅. Keep up the hard work 👏🤛
Absolutely brilliant thank you for taking such care to explain everything. I did my lounge after binge watching your channel and now about to tackle other rooms so perfect timing as was just about go through again as it’s been a year so 👏👏👏
I just started plastering my first room. Started on the ceiling which you said was the best place to start. Jesus christ man! How do you do this every day, my arm is killing! Didnt turn out perfect because my first batch was way too thick, the amount of water on the bag was way off…but i made the 2nd coat much thinner and it turned out pretty good. I think my main issue is not getting it on fast enough.. i really struggled with the troweling because it had dried too much! I bought a sponge today, i think your sponge float technique might give me more time to work with it, even you pros prefer to just trowel! Anyway, love your vids, you gave me the confidence to do my own plastering :)
I've been following your channel for a while and love your videos. And this is the one I've found the most detailed and helpful so far. Thank you! One thing I'm not quite clear on is that when you say roughly 20 minutes per stage... I'm not sure if that's 20 minutes actually applying the plaster, then waiting, then another 20 minutes of doing the next stage, then waiting and so on... OR whether the 20 minutes includes the interval, then going straight into the next stage - so starting each subsequent stage at 20, 40, 60, 80 minutes etc. I hope that makes sense.
When it comes to drywall finishing and plastering I can go from left to right or right to left very easily, and I can do both with either hand. It comes in very handy when doing remodels/patch jobs as there are times when you need to start/stop from either side depending on the situation.
Amazing teaching and recording, editing work, I hope yt is worth it for you, this is exactly what we need when looking to learn how to do a professional job, gotta start somewhere, this is and excellent start :) THANK YOU
Great explanation! If you ever retire from plastering, you might want to teach at a vocational school. The roller method reminds me of something I like to do when painting a wall, not necessarily a plaster wall, that has sort of an exaggerated eggshell surface from too many layers of rolled-on paint, and maybe a minor imperfection here or there. I'll roll or brush a swath of paint, then press it in with a trowel, a drywall knife or one of those wallpaper smoothing blades that resembles a half-size speed skim. I do most of the first layer of paint that way and the second coat ends up much smoother than the wall originally had been; it almost has that glassy look of new plaster. But, I have to say that if I were putting up real plaster, something I only do when it's absolutely necessary, I'd probably use a trowel for every step, simply to avoid having to clean the roller. It might make some people more comfortable though, especially those who are trying to minimize the stress that troweling puts on the wrists.
Brilliant videos On plastering and tutorial. I think your videos are brilliant I've learned a lot viewing your videos Best of luck keep up your good work 👍
This is for the first time when i have seen video where the plasterer bring the camera closer to the wall to see all the details now i can follow you all the time as long as you keep your camera closer to the wall for us to see all the details
Remember standing there when I first started just taking it off the hawk on to the Trowell and back on the hawk for about an hr with sand and lime at college and then we got to the stage on towelling it on the wall and scraping it back off again. Loved my college days had such a laugh
I've began work on my spare room thanks to your videos. Quick question, can you use the roller method for both coats of plaster or just the second coat? Cheers
Hi Blaine, many thanks for this video and indeed all of your excellent and helpful content. I gave the roller a go, 2 coats with spatula flattening, and then I also threw some sponge floating into the process just for giggles. Felt a bit like a gadget-fest but the end result was excellent. I did find the rolled-on rippled plaster needed to be flattened really quickly as the texture seems to make it pull in very fast; I wondered whether I could modify the process next time to roll a couple of meters, speedskim that area, roll some more, speedskim that bit etc Do you think that would work? Thanks for all the great information, I'm learning loads from you but the skills still have a long way to go 🙂
Nice video! Maybe ox or someone could make some decent work clothing for plasterers? Light colours like the colour of dried plaster would be ideal, breathable long sleeve for summer or working in people’s houses maybe a light coloured warm smock type hoody for rendering? Wear a black top when skimming ceilings and after 2 days it looks like you’ve been shat on by a hundred seagulls, and not a good look when pricing up after work!
