Getting started in plastering can be a rewarding venture, whether you consider it a professional career path or a DIY skill to enhance your home improvement capabilities.
    1. Understand the Basics
Before starting plastering, it’s crucial to understand the basic principles and techniques. Plastering requires a keen eye for detail and precision in applying and smoothing the plaster. Familiarize yourself with different types of plaster, such as gypsum-based and cement-based plasters, and where each type is appropriately used.
    2. Get the Right Tools
Invest in quality plastering tools. Essential tools for a beginner include a plastering trowel, hawk, mixing bucket, water brush, and a straight edge or featheredge. Good quality tools can make a significant difference in achieving a smooth finish.
    3. Training and Courses
Consider taking a plastering course. Many colleges and private training centres across the UK offer plastering courses. These range from introductory sessions to more extensive NVQ or City and Guilds qualifications. Training under experienced instructors can dramatically speed up your learning curve.
    4. Practice Makes Perfect
Start practising in a low-stakes environment. You could begin with a small room or a single wall in your home. Practising lets you get comfortable with the feel of the material and the tools.
    5. Learn from Professionals
Watch and learn from professionals. Numerous online resources, including UA-cam tutorials, provide step-by-step guides on plastering techniques. If possible, work alongside experienced plasterers to gain hands-on experience and valuable insights.
    6. Compliance and Best Practices
Familiarize yourself with the building regulations and best practices in the UK. Understanding the standards for construction and finishing can ensure your work is beautiful and compliant with local laws.
Starting in plastering can be challenging but immensely satisfying. With the right tools, training, and a bit of practice, you'll be able to achieve professional-looking results and perhaps even turn your new skills into a fruitful career.

@@Onthetrowel There's an expression used in a lot of trades... "Use your head to save your legs" (get everything you need out of the van / stores and to the work zone in one trip, don't go back and forth all day collecting this and that, then those...) No doubt you do that, since you've also, and quite brilliantly, explained "how to use your head to save your back" by "counting dips" at about 17 minutes in... The number of times I've been told that this that or the other bit of wasted time and effort "was only a few seconds"... But it's a few seconds times thousands of instances every year... 3 seconds x 1,000 = 50 minutes... and that would just be four instances of wasting three seconds per day at work...
We had an apprentice (not plastering ) on one site, to whom every day was day one... Site was remote from shops, but he arrived every day without his lunch, without a drink, and without his cigarettes... Never learned...

in North America (and other places I would guess, I can only comment on the US and Canada) some roll on the topcoat after mixing the material thinner, then skim it off. amazed me, first time I saw it done as coming from the UK and used to seeing the trowel on method. It is a pretty fast way of finishing especially with the long Darby trowel or skimming blades available on the market these days.

    • @samsonacc8081

Noting that there are many ways to accomplish the same task and not 'the' way, helps a lot; continually re-adjusting what you do and not how you do it, leads to early-onset fatigue and rapid disillusionment in your work, particularly when you're a 'occasional user' of the trade as a general builder. It's also good to see demonstrated that items part art, part science.

Two great craftsmen. So much to it when it's been done properly. Great video boys. A word to Roger.. its inspirational that a man wish such a depth of knowledge and experience has the humility and patience to be taught to refine your skill. So many young lads without either. Again, inspirational. Respect from Ireland.

I've just used an old bag of plaster where it went off in 15 minutes. The wall was steaming it got that hot. I didn't notice the date on the packet until afterwards.
    Kirk is a great guy.

Absolute Genius. I wish I had known this when I was an impoverished "first time buyer" forced into renovating my first home. Sir, you are the Master. Thank you and best wishes.

Awesome, nice to have kirk on the channel. Learned something. It is somehow helpful to see how someone is getting on with without being their day job. You know, ok dan’t panic, it’s normal to struggle and learn while you go.
