I've done a lot of these ceilings and it's good to know I'm not the only one that has had to completely take it all back off as it seperated from the artex , good job it happened when I was there 😂 . That was multi finish. Bonding is definitely the way to go with artex painted Artex is low suction exactly what bonding is designed for 👍

More often then not with a shallow pattern I just stick a couple of handfuls of bonding in a two bag mix and let it go firm before second coat. Works a treat
How different is the texture when you mix up a bit of bonding in the first coat of multi finish in comparison to a normal mix ?
@@bee8583 It depends. If you put too much bond in the multi you can times feel a bit of difference in the finish, but nothing that effects the overall finish when painted.

@@bee8583 lovely, gotta get the consistency right, I did a 20sqm artex ceiling the other week and it was a bit stiff, both arms and my shoulder were killing by the end of it. I’ve also mixed it too wet and it’s going everywhere. I like mine the consistency of creamy bonding

Adding a couple handfuls of bonding to your first coat is a game changer especially on a low stipple, let your first coat go quite far and then second coat it looks mint, applies exactly the same as just multi but gives some body to the plaster to get it on thicker to get over the stipple highly recommend trying it.
If you find that better, and you're happy, then that's fine
Excellent video as always, I always Blue Grit Artex myself but doing these on a hop-up takes forever. I know if I try stilts I'll be tripping over causing untold damage haha. Keep up the good work!

You should give microgobetis a go rather than Blue Grit. The grain is much smaller and it dries quicket than pva. Its a dream to skim over. Its more expensive but you can water it down. 👍

we had this done 5 years ago, and a massive section has fallen down…why would this happen? We have coving up so the quotes ever had to over board are £2000 rather than £300 to patch up but we are worried if we patch it could fall down or more in different areas in the future. I just find it odd it was there for 5 solid years no issues and then bang…down a big piece fell.
Hi, it would depend on the structure of your ceiling, if it is an original lath and plaster ceiling and a section has dropped revealing the wooden laths then the ceiling should be overboard as eventually without that more could drop. If on the other hand you can see the Artex beneath still attached to the ceiling then there will be an issue where the plaster has blown away from the Artex, sometimes due to the sealer/adhesive applied before the plastering was too weak a mix. Also unless your room is very large and the existing ceiling is being pulled down, I would suggest that your quote is twice as expensive as it should be. Yes you can still see the artex, the only thing that happened was our son was jumping on and off the bed and then a few hours later it fell…could excess movement also be a cause? We’ve had 4 plasterers come round ( two just haven’t returned any future calls ) and the other two have conflicting info…..we don’t want to spend £2500+ if it can perhaps just be patched up, because it is a very big room.
I used to bond over with cement to speed up and skim but was prone to crack ,now I scrap pva skim thickish coat flatten sponge thin second coat etc , going to try without cement just waiting around to skim up to finishing job same day Great video thanks

I noticed when you put a trowel of skim on its half on your last trowel and half on the bonding is this to keep it flat. I'm quite lucky I only need an old crate. Great video
Hi Roy, yeah it just helps to get the first coat as flat as possible when your laying it on, I'm guessing your pretty tall if you can just use a crate.

Hi mate, just give it one really good neat coat, with a roller, work it well in 😀👍personally I always let my PVA dry completely before I skim

Do it pretty much the same buddy I think it is one the best ways to go, what 4k camera you using mate ? looking for a new setup myself but I like idea of water prof camera and they dont make many, reason for this is had a sony that lets say wasn't cheap and a drip of water killed it
I've got a fairly old Panasonic 4k video camera, always gets covered in shit but have mostly managed to keep it away from the water, I'm not sure what's best to buy, some of those go pro cameras might be good for what we do but I havn't looked at them that closely, a lot of film makers seem to use pictures cameras instead of videocams but apparently they turn themselves off after 10 minutes of video because they overheat! And as you know, the good ones ain't cheap
@@ThePlasterer yea 10 mins wont do us as our video only get started by that stage haha I got one of the go pros as a gift and find it hard to use getting the hang if it more and more but the camcorders are just so simple one i have now all the cameras I use are water proof now but cant get anything water prof with over 1080p LOL and man yes the price for it to get broke in this one be to hard to pay
Hi Eric if the ceiling is undulating badly do you still manage to finish using same mix mixed up with a bit of water even though some areas of ceiling will be really thick with plaster to flatten deep hollows or would you let it firm up and apply second coat.

If undulations are really bad they should be taken out with bonding first

@@ThePlasterer top man. I'll give it a go. My new place is artex on on lath walls and ceiling. Some of it has cracked while I'll repair with bonding or board but want to keep the existing material as much as possible so the building continues to breath as per my understanding.

Hi Ernestas, the multifinish may be drying too quickly, or you may be putting water on the finish too early

I had 1 1/4 inch artec spikes I'm novice I hate ceilings unless small but I did two layers of pva, two coates multifinish thick then thin and I got rid of the spikes. My other room artex is 1 1/2 spikes thinking of using a disc to grind spikes down but could be asbestos ceiling needs testing
If your gonna strip em off definitely get tested first, using a disc will make a ton of fine dust so I wouldn't recommend, most guys overboard if the spikes are too prominent.
I use bonding as I find it much easier for covering spikes

Personally I've never used neat pva or just bonding to first coat over a artex ceiling. I find a quarter bag of bonding to a bag of finish to be a much better mix but hey thats just me. As far as I know I've never had plaster debond in the 40 years I've been at it.
Yeah, a lot of guys use a 50/50 bonding/ finish mix, apparently works really well but I've never tried it

This looks great and we plan to do it in all rooms with artex. However I’m worried that the noisey stomper neighbours above me might make the skim fall down with their banging and hyper active kids. Is that a concern or over thinking in my part?

Make sure your plasterer seals the ceiling with lots of PVA
Just pink or blue it up with plaster bond then two coats of plaster . Been doing it for the past 15 years or more , never had a problem
It’s a nightmare to cover with just finish. When you’ve got 5-6mm stipple it’s never going to cover with just multi

Thanks Lloyd, it has two coats, I do mention in the video that I've edited it out as the video is quite long and can get a bit boring. Saying that, I have done Onecoat before as I can get exactly the same finish. When I do my usual two coat I water down what's left of the first mix for the second coat so the whole set goes off at the same speed

Just out of interest, if the plaster is going to come away from the artex, would that be almost immediately or months/years?
Normally within a day or so
I had it happen to me over the weekend, went too weak with watering down on the PVA. Next day some small patches dropped so I had to knock the whole lot down, took some doing but still did it.
Luckily lesson learned on my own ceiling!
Went belt and braces - Bluegritted, waited until dry, bond (100%) coat, waited until dry, neat PVA (tacky) and two skims of multi 🤓👍
never skim or bond over artex its a bad job
I had one the other month that delaminated while I was laying it on, got a huge lump of plaster in my eye, somehow finished the ceiling but 2 hospital visits later and 2 days off, it wasn’t worth it!
How long is your pva taking to go off enough before you can skim it and don't you find the speed skim leaves drag marks in your Plaster
If its fairly warm in the room about 30 minutes or more, I like it to be more or less dry to the touch, if it's cold or damp in the room, all bloody day😫
If the plaster is dragging you might need to flatten the angle of the speed skim a bit more, and make sure the plaster hasn't started to dry out to much

Best method for me is a thick coat of PVA night before if possible. Next day bonding with multifinish mixed in with it...... Nice thick coat then flatten with 1200 sp skim rule. Trowel out the lines & leave it for 40 mins. Apply a thick coat of multi flatten straight away with the rule then trowel away as you would & finish off with a 14" Nela gold 👊🏾👳🏾♂️

What ratio of bonding with multifinish do you use? I have read of people that say putting two handfuls of bonding with multifinish, but the ratio will depend based on the amount of multifinish that you are using.
Exact same as me mate. I was lazy the other week and tried just multi over an artex ceiling, safe to say it took 3 coats haha
Mate put 4 or 5 hand fulls off bonding in first mix then 2nd coat just plaster your never look back trust me!!

Personally before the spear skim I used to rule off with a feather edge, especially with some of the deeper patterns.
Over boarding is always better but not many people want to pay triple the price.
should only use neat pva on a sealed surface ie silk paint or primed otherwise it forms a skin that can peel also I would never use bonding
I've been on the tools 38 years Terry, I've always used bonding over Atex, and been using neat pva for at least 35 of those years. What do you use instead of bonding?

Might of got this questions heaps but..what’s your thoughts on the Asbestos In the artex? As I understand it’s only 1/2% in the artex. Great vids UA-cam needed this channel.
There was as you say a very small percentage of asbestos in artex until 2000 apparently, although the amount is small it's not a great idea, in my opinion, to scrape it off (though I used too 😮) just to be on the safe side. If the pattern or stipple is too rough then I tend to price for an over board after explaining to the customer why. Hope this helps, thanks for kind comments much appreciated. @@ThePlasterer hi,when you over board you have to make holes to find the joist centres,so you're disturbing the artex/asbestos ,how do you get around this.
Hi, if the ceiling was made from asbestos I wouldn't smack the holes in it, the amount of asbestos that may be in an old artex ceiling however is very small but still needs to be taken into account, I would drive an old posidrive screwdriver into the ceiling with a hammer roughly where the joist should be, if it goes right in easily, you've missed the joist, if you hit the joist, you know it, and the joist thickness is normally approx 2 inches, these puncture holes dont disturb enough to be an issue. You can buy an electronic stud finder, but depending on the price of it they're not always accurate. Hope this helps.

Why? There is brand like ceresit, atlas, soudal and milions other which produce special types of primer for every single coats, different for paint, plaster, tills, and different types of absorbing water depending of future coat, so why school glue PVA? It's 2021!
Because it's cheaper 😂
