Anthropomorphic characters are usually used because they are interesting to look at. Every day you see human faces and you can usually tell what problems there are in a characters model but not with these guys. And on top of that, there is so much variation to be had. All of these different creatures with different attributes. Reminds me a lot of the problems that the game Overgrowth had with people that were turned off by anthropomorphic characters. Everybody grew up watching bugs bunny or the looney toons or whatever it may be. It wasn't weird then and the only reason that some find it weird now is because of the internet.
I got this game for free with xbox live gold and honestly, this game is great better then most of the full 60$ retail price games out there. Feel bad for actually not paying for this game. Absolute Class
Having beaten this game half a year ago and looking back, the most memorable thing about Elysian Tail was definitely Fidget. I'm shocked that some people hate her as a character, I thought her lines were cute and witty. The Dust/Fidget dynamic reminded me a LOT of Link/Midna from Twilight Princess, which was my favorite Zelda title story-wise. That said, I hope the sequel is longer and more repeatable. Elysian Tail clocked in at a good 15 hours, but there wasn't much reason to return to it.
Fidget was about the only character I didn't openly hate at the end. She didn't get a case of stupid teenage angst during the second half. Every line she had was fucking golden.
Fidget really is what Navi could have .... she's amazing from the get go and i keep playing tru this just to get to laugh at her lines once more.... "i am not afraid of the dark, I'M AFRAID OF THINGS IN THE DARK"
I'm on my third play through of this game. I really like it that much. The background art, the music, the combat style. It just keeps drawing me back to it for another go.
The definition of a near perfect gaming experience honestly. I got it on Steam the day it came out and went into it blind. It's sad that a game that costs barely 10% of what most AAA titles trumps them in gameplay experience ten-fold.

I mean...kids shows often use the anthropomorphic style. For example Mickey Mouse, Looney Toons. For at least me I like the style. Of course in a game vs irl is very different. While most Furries are great people there are some...some who just take it too far or sexualise it.....either way I remember playing this on my old Xbox and I recently played it on the pc and I still love it. The anthro style keeps very well suited for children and keeps it light hearted. Imagine if dust was a human and same for fidget. It wouldn’t be the same
She is... too adorable. It's clearly a grown woman doing a baby voice which is just slightly cloying; like putting a bit too much sugar on one's oatmeal. Great lines though.
Best game in its genre personally. Just flawless and the fact that the creator is planning to make a sequel just gets me fired up. Not many games make me this hyped up for a sequel.
I would enjoy seeing a sequel to this game. It has a well built world and strong characters. I enjoy the amount of care and effort put into making the game and would enjoy seeing the story expanded, even if it does take another 4 years.
Another detail that this reviewer may not have realized, while looking at blueprints with the blacksmith, you can click on any material you're missing and purchase more from her on the spot! That's right, there's no need to travel to a town for merchandise and travel back because all the merchants charge the same price and carry the same goods. This is what helps the pacing of the game move along so quickly.
Amen to that statement! Plus, there are way too many human characters in modern video games nowadays, especially with the release of "Fire Emblem: Three Houses", which is a game that definitely did not appeal to me despite its popularity and artistic design.

I have just started to play this game and my god it is fantastic, especially if you are a huge fan of the animal anthropomorphic side of things like me. Very much worth every penny and such a fantastic story line and brilliant art.
I think Dust has a pretty good voice actor. He gets patchy sometimes, but makes up for a couple of really kickass lines. (Especially when a character dies a couple hours in.) Fidget... I kinda like her voice. It was annoying at first, but the character's constant humor and self-awareness makes up for it, at least for me.

I got this game and there was a decent amount of comments in the steam discussions I mostly ignored them and enjoyed the game. Then about a year later, I came across a different piece of software(Facerig) that I also enjoyed messing around with. It too had the exact same complaints. After I saw that again, I decided to to take some advice I heard from TB, which was learn even from reviews that you disagreed with. Given the emerging trend with that same complaint, I looked more into this "furry" thing. And well, here I am. I fully believe that this video was never made, I wouldn't have half the friends I do now. I wouldn't have the job I do now, as it was a local furry I met that recommended me for it. Rest in peace TotalBiscuit. Out of all of the videos TB ever did, this one truly changed the course of my life.
I got this game on sale for £2.00 on a Steam sale, I would have payed £60. It's one of the best metroidvania titles I've ever played. The art and story may not be to your taste but the gameplay is fantastic. It's a damn good experience and hope that everyone gets a chance to play it.
I found myself feeling legitimately bad after killing Fuse, so now Im going to finish Gaius by RAINING DOWN THOUSAND FOOT PILLARS OF FLAMING VENGEANCE!!! I love this game so much... also laughed so hard at the "get a 1000 hit combo quest". hilarious.
I'm about two hours into Dust, and it's been incredibly fun. The voice acting is surprisingly bearable, the art is beautiful, and I am thoroughly enjoying the combo mechanics. Still haven't been able to hit a 200+ hit combo yet, been too strong for the current set of monsters. But I will have you soon, Steam achievement. Been playing through and recording it at the same time (on my channel!) and I am actually curious about how long the game will run. 2.5 hours in and about 17% completion, damned good value.
Humble Bundle 11 is awesome go get it. This game is great and that color blind feature is sooo nice, I appreciate people who care enough to put that in
I'm making a game that has anthropomorphic characters. I find TotalBiscuit's outlook on this very refreshing. I have struggled a bit with people making assumptions about who I am or what I do just because of the game. I really wish more people had this level of understanding of why people make the games they make.

Dear anyone who's worried about this game being furry: It's not. It just has anthropomorphic animals as the characters. It's not sexualized at all and it's not weird or off-putting. If you think it is, you're not giving it a fair chance and you're probably very close-minded.
This game was really fun to play. The story was a bit strange and when i think about it right now it had a few holes in it but it was incredibly fun regardless.
Probably way too late to respond to this, but the creator was actually making a movie (that probably explained everything) and he took a break to make this game, same world/lore.

I absolutely love this game and finally managed to finish it, still hard to believe one person made this game and charges what, 15$ for it? This puts most game companies to shame
What am I still doing watching this? 'Cause I bought it already. A game this highly praised, with this good of an art style, with as good of voice acting as it has... for fifteen dollars... I couldn't pass it up. And for me? The art style's a major bonus. Stylized just enough to make the flying around tornado-jumping believable. Grounded enough to make every character so far identifiable. Little details... that slight bob the ears do as the character moves, the way the tail moves behind him, the distortion during the Dust Storm... makes it all beautiful.
This is one of the few Games, if not the only that made me fell bad about, that I bought it on Sale for an mere 5$ or so... Just finished it again for the last Achievment after an long break, and it's just beatiful! Glad to hear that he made such an nice PC-Port for the Controls and everthing, I do not pay that much Attention to this Stuff, cuz my Machine is a bit old and I have an Pad anyways for those kinda Games. But well it's literally his Game, and you sure see that he loves it very much! One of the most intresting Details for me still is, and it makes totally sense for the Game, as he wanted an Anthromorphic Charactersdesign without the whole weird Train riding trough, is that the Blacksmith actually wears an Undershirt under the Overall. Just wished he would sell Fidget Dolls :D

The Linux version of this game is one of the best ports I've ever seen using Monogame. I think a huge part of it is because of the usage of SDL2, and, compared to Bastion and SpaceChem, I have yet to run into any issues so far (I've put in about maybe an hour so far; I was surprised that my PS3 controller worked perfectly right out of the box and that Pulseaudio didn't have issues). If you haven't bought Humble Bundle 11, there's about 6 days left and it's running at under $5 at the time of this post. I have yet to try out Antichamber, but, being the second UE3 Linux port, I hope it's as good as Dungeon Defenders is in its current build (took awhile for Ryan Gordon to fix all of the bugs and issues, but that man is awesome).
Completed this today, after happening to get it from the humble bundle a while back. Really, really enjoyed it. Combat was so fun. I'd say I hope there's a sequel, but seems a lot to expect one guy to outdo himself.

I like it how there's my comment there, from 3 weeks ago, still on the front page, and I have actually completed the game, 100%, on Tough mode, in 15 hours. That's the ONLY thing I disagree with TB about. "Upwards of 20 hours" seems insane, I mean, I even got max level and all the craftable items, and that wasn't even a part of the completion, I just did it because the game was amazing. In fact, I haven't even finished the video when I left that comment 3 weeks ago, and after playing it, it really is one of the best games I've played, and I'm so glad to see TotalBiscuit so excited about it. I think the only game I've seen him praise more is Brothers: A Tail Of Two Sons (lol). It definitely deserves all the praise, though.
To be honest, I hold this game in high regards due to its good storytelling and downright breathtaking graphics. I consider myself a Furry through childhood only, growing up with Sonic and Disney movies etc. Sexually? No, but I don't view the Furry community condescendingly because of that. It slightly disturbs me, yes, but i'm sure we all have our own differences, no ones perfect after all. I do find it incredibly childish when someone looks at the surface of a game and jumps to conclusions, though, especially when the game only uses anthropomorphic animals to, as TotaBiscuit rightly says, "create a fun world", not to adhere to the perverse expectations of the Internet. For those who hate the Furry community because of (some) of their sexual desires, please think again, and for those who saw this game as nothing but stylized fanart, I urge you to reconsider that $10 payment.
supernerdccs You are doing this wrong, my friend. You need to lure him in and convince such a shy animal to stay, not force it. Give him a nice place to stay and approach slowly and carefully. Once you get him to eat out of your hand, you can safely take him to other discussions and comment sections, but it will take take time.
With this game being on PC for several months now, and the various sales between Steam, GOG and the new Humble Store, does anyone know how much money Dean Dodril actually made off of this? 'Cause I LOVE Dust: An Elysian Tail and want to see another fine piece of work from this guy, but after reading the interview with him on Gamasutra I was kinda shocked by how close he came to literally losing it during the development cycle. I just want to play another beautiful game and know that he had some hired help making it so I don't have to worry about his health.
This is easily the greatest single-handed human achievement I witnessed in my life, and yes, comparing it to Mona Lisa is ridiculous - this game required a much greater variety of skills, more knowledge, passion and time. Mona Lisa doesn't even come close to this;)
I mean the There is a difference between this and the Mona Lisa in that on was a passion project done by a person because he had the means to with all of the access to information we have nowadays, while the other was a pioneering achievement done by one of the greatest inventors of our time. I can't really speak to the quality of Mona Lisa, but Lenardo's variety of skills and achievements weren't simply impressive in of themselves. they where impressive within the context of when they where achieved. it was a lot harder then to learn and create then it is now. there are many many artists that surpass Leonardo nowadays that get virtually no recognition and that is because art nowadays, for the most part, isn't about practical skill. Most people can become really competent with enough time and effort in most fields nowadays. I don't think that it's a good thing, but nowadays innovation seems to be the metric by which visual art is rated. I wouldn't say that Mona Lisa required more practical skill by any means, but I think what I'm trying to say is that for the time period that it was made in it's very impressive and I'm almost certain that if he had grown up in todays culture with it's access to information and it's blending of mediums he could've achieved something that the people of today would guffaw at. Of course, you can never be certain. I know what you're saying and I'm pretty sure that most people wouldn't try to claim that the Mona Lisa Is a comparable project to this. But that is because the two aren't comparable to begin with. it's like comparing the invention of the automobile to the invention of self-driving cars. I mean, yes one is more impressive but you have to take into account the development of our culture, access to knowledge, and availability of tools. I'd hazard to say that Most people could become as good an artist as Leonardo given the time and effort and that there are probably thousands of people who are better artists than him and aren't recognized for their talent. But pioneers are more deserving of our attention than predecessors aren't they? okay, sorry. I'm not upset in the slightest, I just tend to rant a lot. I know you probably don't even care what I have to say, but, uh, thank you for you time.
I think that mechanic is only used with certain extremely powerful and hard to evade attacks like the blombs' explosions. If it didn't work that way, it would instantly kill the player almost all the time, thus, making the game frustrating. But, if you were hit with a regular attack from some guy, then you die because the attacks are so easy to evade or to cancel out that you deserved the death you got.
Get to the last zone and call the Soldiers easy when fighting them on the ground, I dare you. And no, it works on everything up to and including the boss, but my friends tell me that this mechanic isn't in place in the very hardest difficulty.
EvilNinjadude I've been playing it on hardcore, and can vouch for the randomly surviving with 1hp to still be there. Also got the trophy for parrying an attack with less than 10% hp as I got hit, and didn't notice instantly I only had 1 hp. XD

I've never really cared for anthropomorphic-type things of any form, but this game is very seriously at the top of my list of favourites. The art style really is fantastic, and the controls are brilliant. I agree 100% with everything he's said in this video and then some. It's amazing.
I never understood furry hate I grew up play Crash Bandicoot, Sly, Ratchet and Clank, and Ty the Tiger. I guess because as artist I'm open minded... Never fazed me.

I'm about two hours into Dust, and it's been incredibly fun. The voice acting is surprisingly bearable, the art is beautiful, and I am thoroughly enjoying the combo mechanics.
Still haven't been able to hit a 200+ hit combo yet, been too strong for the current set of monsters. But I will have you soon, Steam achievement.
Been playing through and recording it at the same time (on my channel!) and I am actually curious about how long the game will run. 2.5 hours in and about 17% completion, damned good value.
Downloaded this game for free with xbox live gold a few months ago. It truly is one of the best games I've ever played

I'm making a game that has anthropomorphic characters. I find TotalBiscuit's outlook on this very refreshing. I have struggled a bit with people making assumptions about who I am or what I do just because of the game. I really wish more people had this level of understanding of why people make the games they make.

I got this game in the Humble Bundle for about £10. Havent played it yet, but it looks, amazing!
Dear anyone who's worried about this game being furry: It's not. It just has anthropomorphic animals as the characters. It's not sexualized at all and it's not weird or off-putting. If you think it is, you're not giving it a fair chance and you're probably very close-minded.
This game was really fun to play. The story was a bit strange and when i think about it right now it had a few holes in it but it was incredibly fun regardless.

A game this highly praised, with this good of an art style, with as good of voice acting as it has... for fifteen dollars... I couldn't pass it up.
And for me? The art style's a major bonus. Stylized just enough to make the flying around tornado-jumping believable. Grounded enough to make every character so far identifiable. Little details... that slight bob the ears do as the character moves, the way the tail moves behind him, the distortion during the Dust Storm... makes it all beautiful.
I'm really not into mangas. And I totally want this game. Kudos to the creator.

I got SHIVERS as I heard the protag's voice again. The nostalgia is real with this one.
This is one of the few Games, if not the only that made me fell bad about, that I bought it on Sale for an mere 5$ or so... Just finished it again for the last Achievment after an long break, and it's just beatiful! Glad to hear that he made such an nice PC-Port for the Controls and everthing, I do not pay that much Attention to this Stuff, cuz my Machine is a bit old and I have an Pad anyways for those kinda Games. But well it's literally his Game, and you sure see that he loves it very much! One of the most intresting Details for me still is, and it makes totally sense for the Game, as he wanted an Anthromorphic Charactersdesign without the whole weird Train riding trough, is that the Blacksmith actually wears an Undershirt under the Overall.

The Linux version of this game is one of the best ports I've ever seen using Monogame. I think a huge part of it is because of the usage of SDL2, and, compared to Bastion and SpaceChem, I have yet to run into any issues so far (I've put in about maybe an hour so far; I was surprised that my PS3 controller worked perfectly right out of the box and that Pulseaudio didn't have issues).
If you haven't bought Humble Bundle 11, there's about 6 days left and it's running at under $5 at the time of this post. I have yet to try out Antichamber, but, being the second UE3 Linux port, I hope it's as good as Dungeon Defenders is in its current build (took awhile for Ryan Gordon to fix all of the bugs and issues, but that man is awesome).
Completed this today, after happening to get it from the humble bundle a while back. Really, really enjoyed it. Combat was so fun. I'd say I hope there's a sequel, but seems a lot to expect one guy to outdo himself.

I like it how there's my comment there, from 3 weeks ago, still on the front page, and I have actually completed the game, 100%, on Tough mode, in 15 hours. That's the ONLY thing I disagree with TB about. "Upwards of 20 hours" seems insane, I mean, I even got max level and all the craftable items, and that wasn't even a part of the completion, I just did it because the game was amazing.
In fact, I haven't even finished the video when I left that comment 3 weeks ago, and after playing it, it really is one of the best games I've played, and I'm so glad to see TotalBiscuit so excited about it. I think the only game I've seen him praise more is Brothers: A Tail Of Two Sons (lol). It definitely deserves all the praise, though.

To be honest, I hold this game in high regards due to its good storytelling and downright breathtaking graphics. I consider myself a Furry through childhood only, growing up with Sonic and Disney movies etc. Sexually? No, but I don't view the Furry community condescendingly because of that. It slightly disturbs me, yes, but i'm sure we all have our own differences, no ones perfect after all.
I do find it incredibly childish when someone looks at the surface of a game and jumps to conclusions, though, especially when the game only uses anthropomorphic animals to, as TotaBiscuit rightly says, "create a fun world", not to adhere to the perverse expectations of the Internet. For those who hate the Furry community because of (some) of their sexual desires, please think again, and for those who saw this game as nothing but stylized fanart, I urge you to reconsider that $10 payment.

You are doing this wrong, my friend. You need to lure him in and convince such a shy animal to stay, not force it. Give him a nice place to stay and approach slowly and carefully. Once you get him to eat out of your hand, you can safely take him to other discussions and comment sections, but it will take take time.

With this game being on PC for several months now, and the various sales between Steam, GOG and the new Humble Store, does anyone know how much money Dean Dodril actually made off of this? 'Cause I LOVE Dust: An Elysian Tail and want to see another fine piece of work from this guy, but after reading the interview with him on Gamasutra I was kinda shocked by how close he came to literally losing it during the development cycle. I just want to play another beautiful game and know that he had some hired help making it so I don't have to worry about his health.

This is easily the greatest single-handed human achievement I witnessed in my life, and yes, comparing it to Mona Lisa is ridiculous - this game required a much greater variety of skills, more knowledge, passion and time. Mona Lisa doesn't even come close to this;)

I mean the There is a difference between this and the Mona Lisa in that on was a passion project done by a person because he had the means to with all of the access to information we have nowadays, while the other was a pioneering achievement done by one of the greatest inventors of our time. I can't really speak to the quality of Mona Lisa, but Lenardo's variety of skills and achievements weren't simply impressive in of themselves. they where impressive within the context of when they where achieved.
it was a lot harder then to learn and create then it is now. there are many many artists that surpass Leonardo nowadays that get virtually no recognition and that is because art nowadays, for the most part, isn't about practical skill. Most people can become really competent with enough time and effort in most fields nowadays. I don't think that it's a good thing, but nowadays innovation seems to be the metric by which visual art is rated.
I wouldn't say that Mona Lisa required more practical skill by any means, but I think what I'm trying to say is that for the time period that it was made in it's very impressive and I'm almost certain that if he had grown up in todays culture with it's access to information and it's blending of mediums he could've achieved something that the people of today would guffaw at.
Of course, you can never be certain. I know what you're saying and I'm pretty sure that most people wouldn't try to claim that the Mona Lisa Is a comparable project to this.
But that is because the two aren't comparable to begin with. it's like comparing the invention of the automobile to the invention of self-driving cars. I mean, yes one is more impressive but you have to take into account the development of our culture, access to knowledge, and availability of tools.
I'd hazard to say that Most people could become as good an artist as Leonardo given the time and effort and that there are probably thousands of people who are better artists than him and aren't recognized for their talent. But pioneers are more deserving of our attention than predecessors aren't they?

The game doesn't explain one of its deeper mechanics... like how you sometimes survive with 1HP, and sometimes you just don't. Is there a timer?
I think that mechanic is only used with certain extremely powerful and hard to evade attacks like the blombs' explosions. If it didn't work that way, it would instantly kill the player almost all the time, thus, making the game frustrating.
But, if you were hit with a regular attack from some guy, then you die because the attacks are so easy to evade or to cancel out that you deserved the death you got.
Get to the last zone and call the Soldiers easy when fighting them on the ground, I dare you.
And no, it works on everything up to and including the boss, but my friends tell me that this mechanic isn't in place in the very hardest difficulty.
EvilNinjadude I've been playing it on hardcore, and can vouch for the randomly surviving with 1hp to still be there. Also got the trophy for parrying an attack with less than 10% hp as I got hit, and didn't notice instantly I only had 1 hp. XD
So it happens there too? How wonderfully inconsistent. I've exploited this mechanic in more ways than should be possible.

There's a "luck" stat on some gear. It's an RNG that may save you from dying to a critical hit.

I've never really cared for anthropomorphic-type things of any form, but this game is very seriously at the top of my list of favourites. The art style really is fantastic, and the controls are brilliant. I agree 100% with everything he's said in this video and then some. It's amazing.
I never understood furry hate I grew up play Crash Bandicoot, Sly, Ratchet and Clank, and Ty the Tiger. I guess because as artist I'm open minded... Never fazed me.
same here, its like 'furry' or anything slightly anthro now is mainly a bash thing, meant for lower quality stuff but ffs Disney did anthro all the time ! Games had a ton of anthro's when I was a young teen. I don't understand the hate, I don't even understand why its 'cool' to hate anthros. I frigin love them.
