    In fairness to the language issue in the game (the characters not speaking English), the language as we know or it, or even the version Shakespeare knew, wouldn't have existed at the time King Arthur was supposed to have been around.

    Page 15 of the manual (available using hyperlink on the game's Steam page) says this: "You can select a group of units which you want to assign to a number on the keyboard, or add single units to the group by holding down CTRL and left clicking on the unit. Once your group is selected, you can assign it by pressing CTRL and a number on your keyboard. You can now select the group by simply pressing the assigned number key." FWIW.

    I worked for the developer Games Distillery and was testing the game (we were small company and my actual job title was something else). I came here again to remember the brilliance of Total Biscuit, and this game is a closest connection to him I have. I love his videos and was fan long before he made this review/first look. When I saw it I was thrilled and amused then he was pissed by this game several videos later.
    I agree this game is unfinished and actually a crap. The game was released during development by our publisher without our knowledge (they used some build we sent them to show what is done so far).

    • @Hazarth
      @Hazarth Рік тому

      Dude, that sucks. Do you know which publisher did that? I see that Citadels was co-published by BitComposer and HandyGames

      Man, this game looks just like an rts I had in mind when I was twelve. Archers running along the wall, giant arrow-flinging thing on the tower. It's sad that it was not even finished.

    • @sutech
      @sutech Рік тому +1

      @@Hazarth can't really recall. might have been the bitcomposer as that rings a bell.
      anyway, the studio no longer makes games, but 3D visualisation software under different company name. I no longer keep in touch, so I don't know more.

    I didn't mean on the minimap, I meant being able to see them. There's the stone within his view that he can see and is collecting, and as he scans around, there are other similar looking spots which lead me to believe stone would be there, but he can't see the stone because he hasn't explored there.

    thank the gods for Totalbiscuit!
    When i saw this game on Steam, i was so excited because it appeared to be a Stronghold style castle-builder, which nobody seems to have wanted to make since like 2002. Dont developers realize there's a huge market chock full of people that want to build/attack castles??
    So this game seemed like a wet dream of mine come true - until totalbiscuit skewered it, and rightfully so. Hilariously so.
    10 patches later, I'll pick it up for 5.00 on a steam sale.

    They didn't advertise the game, it came out what like 3 days ago and its playable atm.
    Right there shows what the end product will be,however the developers are posting that they are actively fixing the game, small performance issues, tool tips, fixing levels...its all on the way within the first week.
    If they sold it for 9.99 they release and walk away, for 40 you gt patches and an active community.
    I dont think the game will ev er compare to the great RTS games but its definitely playable

    Don't get me wrong, this game was terrible and had a lot of problems at launch that it shouldn't have had. But I also don't think every RTS game should be copying Starcraft either... I've always hated SC's way of just plopping you down next to all the resources you're going to need, then having you semi-mindlessly spam units.

    Look at Kerbal space or Prison architect. Now those developers have a very strong idea and a community behind it.
    If the developers of citadels gets a response from the community saying we want different color peasants, thats 30 minutes of work its just no one knows.
    The catapult faster than melee units, again thats some number on a spreadsheet,takes 5 seconds to tweak it.
    The 40 dollars is for the core game, yes its expensive but they need to buy food and keep a roof over their heads.

  • @ArtemyMusha
    @ArtemyMusha 11 років тому

    Because most game reviews tend to go over the game as a whole, whereas what TB does is go through a segment from the beginning of the game and give his thoughts based on that, without going for the idea that it might get worse later. Going over the whole thing is the label the term "review" carries in popular culture at the moment, so that's why TB makes the distinction all the time. First impressions in gaming do count, after all.

  • @iniyari
    @iniyari 11 років тому

    Agreed. I even liked the expansion, although the "starships" were basically a different type of naval vessel.
    Hey TB: I *do* kinda like the idea of being able to use raw resources or needing to refine them for higher-tier units. As you mentioned, though, it's been done (a la Pharaoh). I also liked the artistic style of Citadels. Aside from the obvious "Where's mah peasants?!" issue, it looked very characterful. Too bad it sucks blueballs....

  • @lintfordpickle
    @lintfordpickle 11 років тому

    possibly, but as I replied to another guy a second ago - I think a first impression is an assessment of a product and therefor, by definition, a review. He offers some conclusions at the end of the video about the worth of the game, so there have obviously been some reviewing going on.

  • @Belvie

  • @TrippDay

    I do hope they keep coming up with games in the future, just for the sake of new reviews. Lovely episode.

  • @massivepileup
    @massivepileup 11 років тому

    Not really.
    For one there's stuff like motion blur, the eye sees all positions that an object moves through but in a videogame things don't move continuously, only on frame changes so there's a certain amount of jumpiness to movement. E.g. when you move your hand quickly under halogen light you can see the individual images produced as the light flickers even though you are not able to see the flickering itself.
    And with games the framerate dictates the input lag of the game.

  • @ArtemyMusha
    @ArtemyMusha 11 років тому

    So, because it's from a small, not-as-well-known dev team, that automatically makes it worth a purchase? Well, by your logic, that makes Revelations 2012, Amy, Orion: Dino Horde, Stalin vs Martians, You Are Empty, 3D Cartoon Land Safari and Super Monster Bros worth playing as well!

    Many, many, many of the bugs, glitches, missing UI elements, have been fixed with patches. Keep in mind this video is made back near release. Citadels has made some big strides in making this game better. Still not bug free sure, but much better.

    • @freezinfeet
      @freezinfeet 11 років тому

    • @soundcreepy

    • @freezinfeet
      @freezinfeet 11 років тому

      and the mistake is being paid for by the developers early release without any testing, hes still making/ finishing off the game, that gives people every right to complain about it. i know your just saying that its better know but the game will always have that history of its release that will cripple its future hopes

    • @soundcreepy
      @soundcreepy 11 років тому

      freezinfeet And thats fine, just wanted to make people aware that this video does not depict Citadels in its current form.

  • @Bassgroove91
    @Bassgroove91 11 років тому

    I see your point and it actually makes sense. A good indie or low budget game from a small developer can get better with a strong support of the community.
    I don't agree that it is that easy to fix the problems and tweak the balance so easily, specially after a release but there is no point in arguing that.
    Yes, food and roof, but we can agree that at this stage the games value is not even close to 40 dollars. And if you look at Kerbal and Prison, even they charge less.

  • @Matthew1J

    Well resource icons are good. You can se axe at wood icon, pickaxe at ore, smith hammer will be iron i guess, scythe at wheat, axe can be weapons. This is not game fault but yours (unlike other things you point at).

  • @danlock1

    ...and resources seem to be automatically-generated once the relevant resource-production buildings are constructed. That doesn't invalidate TB's concerns regarding lack of tooltips or other things; even the manual indicates certain things that don't seem to exist in entirety in the build TB is playing.
    Releasing the game before it's finished is what seems to have happened here.

    one thing i think the video game industry sees alot more of than other businesses , is the lack of understanding.
    Not every game can be a homerun, not every developer manages his team and resources perfectly and not every good looking game can become a franchise.
    In the RTS genre you get more of the grown up kid than the actual 7 year old cursing at you which certainly has is downsides, we all feel entitled to a great game, if the developers are happy and 1 customer is satisfied they succeeded.

    Sure it has, that's why Dwarf Fortress has universal acclaim and a fair amount of popularity. The whole "Graphics roll" sentiment is outdated, that was a thing about 5 to 10 years ago.
    Of course, most big studios still seem to cling to that sentiment, but that's them, not the players. The main reasons all-out graphical games still gain a following nowadays are fanboyism and the fact most of the time smaller developers don't have the resources to offer decent, gameplay-based alternatives.

    That's because most RTS games are CPU bound. The power of your graphics card is usually of little consequence, as most of the time the game AI, pathfinding, enemy detection, sometimes even the animation etc. is all done on the CPU. Of course, this is in regards to an RTS game specifically. RTS's crush CPU's very easily.
    His double Titans won't help him much there lol. I liked the review though, it was very informative. I absolutely love games like this, but if the UI and tooltips are that bad, it definitely detracts from the game.

    There are standards on P.C. that games clearly don't meet, especially if they don't run well.
    Games like Crysis (made in 2007) still look better than most games today.

    Steam is a digital retailer. Valve is no more responsible for performing Q&A on the titles sold on the Steam platform, than Wal-Mart or Gamestop is for the titles they display on their shelves. Valve is only responsible for the games THEY publish.
    It's always been incumbent upon the consumer to perform a little bit of due diligence before they buy something. The fact that it's a digital copy of a game changes nothing. And frankly, the warning signs were there for anyone who bothered to look.

    To answer the first paragraph, first impressions still count. It'd take a miracle for a game with this many faults (Which you yourself claim to have noticed as well) within the first moments to improve drastically. That's why he reinforces the notion that first impressions do matter, particularly with how not everyone has all the free time in the world.
    Also, the language and clothing choices weren't the only problems he had. Just saying.

    I can't stop laughing, epic review, its like the game itself was making stuff happen just so you'd know how bad it was for this review. The crash at the end.. priceless.. I just wish I woulda seen this review before buying this game....

    I know that, what I meant was it is the companies which set the price of their game obviously... but since valve are the ones who decide what go on to their store page (and valve gets a certain % of profits) it is partly their fault if a game is released to their service in a buggy state because they should be taking responsibility since it is on their service and they should QA the titles on their service not just randomly accepting anything just because they get a cut out of what is sold.
