    "I've felt him pulling me to take the quick and easy path, to leave the weak to fend for themselves."
    Imagine reading this line as someone who has chosen not to complete any of the sidequests, trying to finish the game as fast as possible. There's Cassius's influence. Power, here represented by knowing video games and knowing the sidequests "don't matter"...is evil.
    I'm stretching, but there might be something there?

    • @IngoSchwarze

      Besides, did anybody actually try that? Even if it is true that ignoring the side quests changes nothing, you have a good point - but are you sure that there is no effect?

      I think some of the side quests might actually be necessary.
      If I remember correctly, saving Corbin is a side quest that rewards you with a white resonance gem.
      You'd need that to open doors.
      I could be wrong though, that might've been a main quest.

      They could have had Cassius' influence be that Dust starts off as reluctant to do tasks that distract from his main goal, not out of dismissal of "little problems", just a "I don't want to be side-tracked" attitude. But he gets less reluctant with each task he completes, or his attitude changes when he decides to help Mudpot.

    I would suggest that Cassius' nature is best reflected by the combo-heavy, destructive gameplay that encourages delighting in juggling and blasting foes. Dust himself remarks on how good it feels to level up, a phenomena literally depicted by the explosive shockwave and lightning each time you cross an experience threshold. You're absolutely right that Cassius is under-represented in the narrative, but the disparity between the way you hack and slash through mooks and bosses and the subsequent moral conversations does reflect the division and struggle between the two. I know I for one was maniacally laughing through my "genocidal" slaughtering of monsters, birds and various 'lesser' antagonists, up until Fuse pointed out that those were his 'children' (or at least direct creation) and that I was no better than him. Now, obviously, it's a video game - the enemies attack you, refuse surrender, you have to fight and kill to just cross screen boundaries. But it does call attention the fact that exerting power, even in defence of the innocent, will harm other violent individuals (who stand little to no chance - neither powerful nor innocent, just followers of the powerful) and bring you into direct conflict with other powerful people.
    Great analysis, I've been enjoying your hosting of the Gaming Symposium and subscribed here a while back but this is the first video of yours I've sat and watched in full. Thanks for giving the game a fair shot and overlooking some of its more budget-constrained aspects.

      I would also point out that there are two scenes where Cassius shows through pretty handily that weren't mentioned. Namely does Dust react to being condescendingly ''judged'' by someone who clearly knows more than he does yet refuses to tell him anything? Snapping at the sword about the way it's talking to him, and so clearly bringing up what has been eating at him after such a trying moment. Personally, I think he was right to scold the sword. It dropped the emotional ball pretty hard.
      Second how does he respond to the laundry jerk upon returning said laundry? More or less: ''don't do it again or I'll stab you to death.'' Again totally justifiable. Just because you'd generally agree it's the right response to that doesn't make it a Jin move.

    • @Sevness

      You can literally beat the game without ever leveling up, that is part of the point why the game is so "easy" to play, even on the hardest difficulty. But we are conditioned to see things as threats, as objects to act upon for self-gratification, to slaughter for what measly junk they drop we need to make gear that we then are conditioned to hoard, and discard once no longer of use, all to grow more powerful, never once thinking how these things feel we are killing.
      The game even wants you to get to a 1000+ hit-combo for an achievement, a challenge you can not normally do in the game without serious planning. But it's easy to do, all you do is go to the graveyard, find the long, flat path, put on a ring meant to make you super weak in damage, and hold a button down, before switching to another one occasionally to keep the combo climbing, effectively tormenting and playing with the undead creatures there, becoming more and more excited a the numbers go up, laughing as the enemies fly all over, not dying just suffering as your plaything.
      There is a LOT of that, the Cassius parts are in every way as you say, portrayed in the combat, to slaughter the masses of enemies, for gains in power, to fill whatever your desires are.

    • @Sevness
      @Sevness 3 роки тому +5

      @@hockeater He is shown a lot, and oftentimes is shown through the player's choices, not forced upon you by the story. His anger, his hate, the player's desire to slaughter things, for fun, for power through leveling up, for the materials dropped to make "better" gear when the game can be beaten without farming materials. We, as the player, are given the choice to cultivate Cassius or Jin, to help others, or be selfish and only help for our own desires, or ignore them completely.
      I had hoped he'd have mentioned the itching powder in the guys' laundry if you choose to do that, doing something kind of mean and evil simply to just spite a person. The game literally rewards you for making that choice, regardless of anything, and stokes the flame you choose to feed.

    I think a way to solve the imbalance between the portrayal of Jin and Cassius would be to make their conflict more blatant towards the second half. So we can see how they’ve changed one another for the better and so that the line “I remember everything, and it changes nothing!” Can be a solely Cassius line.

      This comment kinda reminds me of Elysian's Tail analysis by Finding the Plot which was off-color in a way compared to every other one you can find-- But back to the point. Nobody ever notes that what the Moonbloods did was odd, with how they can raise the dead and how they chose to give Dust amnesia so he would "focus on his mission instead of getting distracted". I wonder what the maker of this game would say about it?

    My name is SCOTSMAIAR! and I have several things I'd like to say about this analysis. I'm an artist myself and being a big fan of animation, this game shows gorgeous use of traditional (and some CGI) animation. This video game is actually thematically complex for an indie game and it brings up many interesting topics of the balance between innocence and power, inevitability (through that tragic narrative twist), managing your own identity, the negative impact of various types of power, prejudice and even some great Christianity subtext to inspire hope. Thank you Game Professor for giving me such intriguing insight.

  • @Dom-ns7pq

    Great analysis as always. A few years ago, I read an interview with the developer (I believe in Gamasutra). Apparently, he had in mind a much longer story in which Gaius was not in fact the ultimate villain and he had more complex motives for his genocidal actions. It's a shame he never got to complete his story as I suspect it would have added even more layers to Dust.

    • @DevenOClock
      @DevenOClock 7 років тому +5

      At the least, I feel Gaius's motives come through in the subtext, but it's easy to overlook. The damage a single rogue Moonblood like Fuse could do, the advanced weapons and technology they'd created and hidden away until Gaius discovered it and, of course, RESURRECTING CASSIUS. There's definitely a foundation to why Gaius feared them.

    I personally love the artstyle in this game. It reminded me of bastion in its design, especially about balancing innocent and power. I even found the acting in the portions you've mentioned in this analysis really nice actually. The ending is, in my opinion, a bit too the left of the Hero's Journey (kind of like Dark Souls, but with a clearer motivation). All in all, it is quite good.
    Kudos for the animations in Dust though. Its gorgeous to look at this game tbh.

    I honestly think that the end sequence is a pretty great example of Cassius coming out too. "I am justice incarnate." is not only incredibly Badass, but that entire segment exudes the power that Cassius would have likely displayed, in a personality sense. With the idea that the previous Cassius would likely have a much better sense of empathy for the moonbloods after seeing what had happened to them.

    I think making it non-linear could've worked better in it's favor to explore the concept of balance. Don't make it black and white. If they side too often with jin, the game should have an ending where dust is doomed to fail, too weak from innocence to actually win the final fight. If they side too often with casius, it should be an ending where dust wins, but due to his callous nature he harms way too many innocents in the process, and the people, including your friends and companions lash out at him and he finds himself as the enemy of everyone. If you managed to balance the two, you get the true ending, the actual ending you get in the game as it is now.

      I can understand that. I just making it clear that the phrase didn't _originate_ with the Book of Common Prayer. In fact, it's not really an extension, now that I think about it. It's a condensation of the original statement with a superfluous add-on to make the phrase sound more poetic.

    I feel like an option to not spend points into those combat abilities should be an option and non-explicitly tie that to access to the side quests so that you have an in-game dichotomy of spend points to gain combat prowess vs save points to unlock side quests/social options. IMO this would be a good way to mechanically mirror Innocence vs Power.
    Ideally then the "good ending" should be one where you have balanced the spent vs unspent points.

    In regards to the point you were making about Halo Reach and how it approaches constant success yet indirect failure, I actually think what it did works perfectly.
    I mean, these guys are the best of the best, and they show it. Everything they're asked to do, they do it, and they do it well. But the planet is STILL being lost to them. To me this made the threat even greater, in that these excellent and flawless soldiers, even when achieving all their short term goals, are not enough to slow down the enemy.
    Reach obviously begins with you aware that the planet is doomed, if you're familiar with Halo, so that inevitability makes their momentary celebratory attitudes whenever they succeed at something look so naive.

    Well, Dust isn't really "dead", the ancient grey eyes talked about a storm 《yet to come》with a certain look at the player. Some may say I'm too attached to the character, but it's not only that. Ginger recognises Dust by seeing the dust flowing away with the blade of Ahrah and Fidget follows the trail. Since Ahrah said Fidget was forced to follow the swordbearer, it means the swordbearer, Dust, in that case, still exists. This isn't a mere soul, everything else didn't create a soul when killed, the monsters' whole body burning, and even if a soul there was, they weren't visible to our eye, so why would Dust's own be different. Finally, the ultimate argument, the dev, Dean, said in an interview that there WILL be a sequel, someday, just that it isn't his next game.
    Well, that's pretty much all I got, feel free to react to my theories or counter them. I have an open mind.

      It's my favorite game, the surprise villain at the end is my favorite villain of all time and one of my favorite characters of all time.
      (Spoilers if anyone wants to avoid them for World Ends With You)
      Thank you for replying! Can I actually ask your opinion on Joshua and what exactly you think his motives for the shootoff?
      My personal theory is that he changed his mind in the second week and started pushing the 'can't afford to lose' thing on Neku then. I love him but I think he's a stubborn little ***** and upon realizing he was wrong he was to stubborn to live with his failure and pushed Neku to kill him and thus become the new composer. I think he started that game expecting to lose, thinking he made himself irredeemable.

      Man, I haven't played the game in years and don't have good enough memory of the ending sequence to answer that question. >.<
      I might analyze it as my third JRPG analysis after... the one I am currently working on. No spoilers. :P
      Final Fantasy VII, Persona 4, and Lost Odyssey are also in the running for that though. We'll see, but I definitely plan to analyze it at some point. It deserves it.

    New subscriber here, been watching a fair bit of your videos and, gotta say, I'm quite the fan. Great research and presentation, and the points you bring up are very well thought-out. I can see how much work you put into your content, and I hope more people find this channel in the future. One thing, though, that I would recommend (if this isn't already on your to-do list) is to get a nice microphone and up the audio quality to a bit more of a professional level. Your videos' content is almost entirely conveyed through your voice, and, currently, the audio quality is (imo) barely acceptable. To me, it's tinny, flat, and, dare I say, verging on webcam-tier. It certainly does the job, but I think it's currently your weakest element. If you got a hold of, say, a Shure SM7B and did some light audio processing (EQ, compression), that would bring the overall quality of the analyses up significantly. Regardless, keep up the great videos, cause I'm loving them!

    • @GameProf
      @GameProf  7 років тому

      Glad you're enjoying the show!
      Been trying to work with the audio for a little while, but unfortunately much of the problem is actually the acoustics in the room, and the equipment to fix that is incredibly costly. But I do agree the audio quality could use work, and I'd love to get it more up to snuff.

      Ah, yeah, that's a bit of an investment. For the voice over stuff at least, you could try recording in a closet full of clothes. Yields surprisingly good results from what I hear.

    • @SchazmenRassir
      @SchazmenRassir 3 роки тому

      @@caz8135 Eh, it's because of things associated with it online. Furries, as far as people go, are basically people who appreciate and enjoy things with animal people. Not anime catgirls or things like that, but more like Disney's Robin Hood or Zootopia. Animals with human characteristics. Troubles start when people dress up as them (others wonder why they would do that) and then there's a more... adult-oriented side to it, too. And that weirds a lot of people out, so they latch on to it and hate everyone because of it.

    I played this game when it first came out as a child and man I love it even more now as an adult. Story wise for the most part, gameplay however really gets repetitive near the end of the first 3rd of the game unfortunately with not much variety in combat and enemy design thereafter. :(
    I agree with most of the criticisms of the story but if I were to give a little pushback I would say that while yes the topic of racism and prejudice could've been better handled with more nuance and detail I would like to remind everyone that the game is rated E10+. Maybe I'm being too linent because of the age rating but I think remembering the intended audience is important for games with stories like this. I agree that the game's story could've handled it better but I if more detail was put into that aspect specifcally above the "It's bad don't do it", it probably would've gone over most children's heads.
    Maybe there's an example of another game that does this exact same thing with it's story for the same audience but better that I just don't know about. Maybe I'm also biased because I never experienced a story like this as a child and I think it deserves more credit for respecting the intended audience's intelligence intentionally or otherwise. Idk those are just my thoughts.
    I agree with everything else though. Great analysis overall.

    the only thing i did not like in the plot is that figet seems kind of meh at the end.... first she sais to the moonblood elder "he is dust, that all that matters" but in the end before the battle with gaius she is like "you are jin now!" wich is controversy and really tipped me off... and i actually didnt like that the choice of who u feel to be like makes no impact at all in the dialog with the moonblood elder...

    Nice analysis professor. I'll agree that the subject of balance is pretty interesting as a story subject matter, however, while that whole opinion of a straightforward story is better than the player deciding story, i would like to think that there would be a middle ground story that would be more fitting. For example, Dust could ally with Gaius for a brief moment but ultimately could have a point where he'd have to make a choice of killing Fidget, and while the player would have that choice of doing so or not, it would inevitably lead to Dust rejecting the execution which would fall into a complex situation of balance. It seems pretty interesting to theorize, but regardless you did an excellent summary. Can't wait for Alan Wake!

    • @GameProf
      @GameProf  7 років тому +13

      Trump wasn't actually the direct subject of any of those examples. The specific images there were of articles normalizing Richard Spencer (a literal Nazi) and an article in which Sean Spicer defended the appointment of Steve Bannon (a particularly prominent white nationalist and anti-semite who's largely responsible for bringing those views back into mainstream conservationism through Breitbart). So no, in the instances I included there, it's not really pushing it.

      I reckon game would be much better with a binary choice system. But only one guy and he was an animator not a programmer. Plus it would require making probably twice as many cutscene's for him, as I doubt he would've set them up in a modular fashion that would make that process simply to impliment.
