I own the Genesis version of Toy Story. And I can confirm that while it is slightly harder. It’s more forgiving than either other version. Because the pull-string mechanic actually works better. And the hit box is more accurate. As for the PC version, I believe it’s one of those cases where it was a last minute port, to meet the VHS release. I remember actually stumbling onto someone who worked on the PC port, in a gameplay video’s comment section. And he said that the reason why the PC version is the way it is was because they had a very short amount of time. And the original source code wasn’t given to them. So they had to create everything from scratch. 😔
The PC version was also targeting rather low end hardware which along with the tight deadline and the developers lacking the source code, it explains the shortcomings of the PC version. The claw level was removed because they couldn’t get it to run smoothly on their target PC hardware.
I'm guessing the reason for no password system on the U.S. console versions is due to gaming companies having a beef with Blockbuster at the time, fearing that making games rental would ruin their profits, so they tried to make their games as hard as possible to force players to buy the whole game.
I can't describe how big of an impact Toy Story left me as a 6 year old kid when I watched it at the movie theatre. The movie blew me away, and I was so happy when I got the Mega Drive game gifted on christsmas. It took me and my sister like three years to finally beat the game, using passwords and all.
The reason why the Game Boy Pixar games were so bad was because Tiertex made them. They were infamous for making the Genesis rendition of Strider 2 which was so bad that it was disowned by Capcom and replaced with the actually good version on the PS1.
Nice review. But maybe check the audio balance. I had to keep changing my volume because the music was crazy loud during the comparison part and also the gameboy part.
I think the airport scene from toy story 2 where woody's pullstring is used as a lasso i think it was taken from the snes toy story. 10:14 basically movie based game used alot of deleted scenes or concept and put it in the game since the game was in development around the time when the movie wasn't finished in production. Tell that to shrek the third where they use a deleted dragon in the ice cave scene
I didn't watched Toy Story 1 for the first time since I was born in 2004. but thankfully I've watched the handful of 2000s Pixar's movie. These were my nostalgia back then ❤
@@CrystalOmega The founder of Traveller's Tales did explain how the 3D levels were made on his GameHut channel and it seems the approach may have been too platform specific to be easily implemented on PC. Edit: Actually, the main programmer for the PC version made a youtube comment on a video explaining that the 3D levels were implemented, but it lagged too much on the minimum spec processor, which was a 486DX 33Mhz which was 5 years old, ancient in that era . So they had to cut the 3D levels. Furthermore, the programmers weren't given the code from the Genesis and SNES versions and had to manually play the console version and simply try to guess how it was coded and remake it from scratch. Also, it had to work with Windows 3.1 and 95 instead of DOS, making it for DOS would be easier. And the deadline was super tight of course
@@Jonen560ti ohh, soo that's why the fps stage wasn't their. Gotcha. I swear i never knew the reason why is wasn't there, thanks for the clarification >:3
There is actually a way to get lives in the game those stars are the key every level has 50 in them collecting all 50 gets you an extra collecting 46 and up gets you a health point collecting 200 total gets you a bonus game to earn back more health collecting 300 total gets you a continue. The best way to beat the game without cheats is to go for those stars get as many as you can early on to have enough lives for the parts that are lives drainer like the claw boss fight, the roller Bob stage or the rocket man level I hope this helps
Great video, I can really see how the extra time you spent editing paid off. Also, did you get a new mic? The sound quality was really good in this video!
The PC version was reportedly rushed out in a few months judging by a comment from one of the developers on a playthrough of said game. That’s why the physics are messed up and several animation frames and the first person level are missing.
In the PAL Version of the game there is a Password System for BOTH versions (Not sure about the PC release) they added it in at the last second for PAL people because NTSC people were having a hard time playing it. Including kids...
I was replaying this, and still pretty decent imo. I'm not a fan of the biggest fan of the RC stages either, Buzz Clip being my least favorite. The last level wouldn't be too bad if you were panned to the left more. The Genesis version has a bit more view, idk how much it'd help though cause even I struggle a bit in it. Another difference between the versions is, well you probably noticed is the SNES version somehow lacking You Got A Friend In Me. This might be a nitpick, but that's one reason I prefer the Genesis version, feels more complete. Along with the slightly wider view for certain levels. Actually the US Genesis version also has a level skip cheat, which is who I progress the game when I get a game over. On the title screen you have to put in the inputs A, B, Right, A, C, A, Down, A, B, Right and A, you'll hear Woody yell "Hot hot hot!". Then when in the levels, pause and press A to skip.
i made rocket man only being hit eith a metallic part of the final truxk, without cheaying, i am a legend XD but it makes sense, you olayed the SNES versions, where yhat level has less screen
Good video, I do personally disagree in that i always though the best Pixar movie was toy story 1, t's interesting to hear someone rank it as not even close, but I also grew up deeply with both 1 and 2. I feel like the pacing and more simple structure of the first ones plot is part of why it has aged well and as you say it's quite funny, but I could see toy story 2 edging it out in many respects and being a superior movie but something about the first is so prototypically Pixar but in a less is more kinda way for me
I was born in 1996 the year after the original film came out I watch the original all the time as a kid and the sequel to I them both on VHS by the time the third one came out I was in Middle School 2010 and by the time the fourth one came out I was adult as a result I don't hold the same kind attachment to the third and fourth movies
I believe the super Nintendo has the superior soundtrack, the PC is somehow too good and charming in some places to be fit for a video game. The only banger in my opinion that the Sega has at least in fighting chance against the rest of the music tracks is the buzz battle.

Yeah, but at least they listened and got the passwords into the JP and Pal versions.

I was born in 1992 so I was young but I still remember Toy Story very much
I just watched the first film a lot on Disney Channel as a kid.
I wouldn't be surprised if evil buzz was cut from the movie because some movie games Cleary aren't the main focus in movie production.
James earl Jones makes it the best Pixar film ever made just by doing some of the background music
