Jon Burton and his team at Travellers Tales were wizards when it came to the Sega Genesis hardware. The Genesis port is technically better in a lot of areas, and even includes one extra stage. There is nothing wrong with the SNES port, but the Genesis game does win out here.

The Mega-Drive was the lead platform for this game, ie, it was specifically coded to get the most out of that hardware and was then ported to the SNES. Basically, it played to the strengths of the Mega-Drive (and mitigated its weaknesses) far more than it played to the strengths of the SNES. Hardware can only make so much difference if the game isn't coded to use it to its full potential.
Instead of the usual fanboy nonsense, I'd recommend people have a search of UA-cam for GameHut, which is Jon Burton's channel (aka, the founder of Traveller's Tales and one of the developers on this game) where he explains a whole host of the amazing tricks going on in the Sega version of this game, as well as others like Mickey Mania and Sonic 3D.

The SNES has more colors and a softer appearance, which is to be expected. There was an impressive amount of work put into the Genesis version to make it look as good as possible with it's limited color palette, and the result is a game that looks very sharp and polished. The cutscenes in the Genesis version not only feature many more still shots from the movie, but the amount of colors and detail the programmers managed to retain is one of the most impressive feats in Genesis programming. There are certain effects which were added to the Genesis version that were not present in the SNES version (notice the 'glowing' effect on Nightmare Buzz), and certain shots and graphics were altered in the Genesis version to improve the game's presentation (The smiling Woody in the Genesis version's title screen is more inviting and encouraging to the gamer, and makes the player character seem more confident rather than envious). Finally, the addition of the level 'Day-Toy-Na' adds more gameplay to the Genesis version. It's unfortunate that the SNES didn't get this level too, because it would have been a perfect opportunity to showcase the SNES's mode 7 feature which would have made this level look so much better on the SNES. Overall, the Genesis version just feels more complete. The programmers didn't need to go the extra mile for the Genesis. It could have just been a more direct port, with downscaled graphics and colors which was otherwise identical to the SNES version. They did however go the extra mile, and they didn't even stop there. This level of care and attention to detail undoubtedly earns the Genesis the winning spot.

    Piece of jewel!!!!
My first choice would be the Sega Genesis version.
Those of us who know programming know and are very clear about the following:
    1) the genesis had twice the processing power capacity of the snes.
It is very fast and never slows down.
It makes the game much smoother and more enjoyable to play
    2) the famous mode 7 of the snes and the 3d rotations, the genesis could do them without the need for special chips for that, and that is clearly demonstrated in many games of the time.
    3) By the processor could achieve much more moving wallpapers and Sprites on screen etc...
    4) as everyone mistakenly believes, the genesis did not have a simultaneous color limitation and its available color palette was not 512, in fact that was the base and more colors came out of it, reaching almost 2,000 available colors, and about 200 simultaneously colors in moving images.
    5) the famous transparencies of the snes genesis could be achieved without any problem with the light and shadow technique and had two other techniques to achieve it, dithering and by frames.
    6) the sound of the genesis is much clearer because it does not use samples, but instead generates the audio itself with an internal instrument it has, and generates it in real time and could also play samples such as voices in a completely clear way, being able to achieve not only one but three channels of samples for it sounding at the same time.
The quality depended on the quality of the sample that was introduced, that it was more or less compressed.
But it did not depend on the machine.
    7) While the snes only worked with samples and for that reason they were totally compressed samples and they sounded very bad, to save space.
That's why most games sound very muddy and sound like they're inside a box or behind a wall.
To understand it better, it was as if it had an internally compressed MP3 player, but it did not generate its own sound as the Sega Genesis did.
I only know of very few games that have good sound.
The only positive thing that the snes has in terms of sound is that it had a special internal system to achieve reverb and delay, so they could achieve a little more depth in the sound.
Although the genesis also had techniques to achieve it but it was more complicated, that's why the sound of the genesis sounds drier to us, but that is easily solved by taking the audio from the genesis to a reproduction equipment and adding that delay or reverb effect of external way and problem solved.
    8) the aesthetic appearance of the Sega genesis is incredible, classic and elegant while the aesthetic appearance of the snes is actually horrible, it looks like a cart, only the wheels are missing.
    9) a higher screen resolution, the snes is seen with less resolution and more blurry, not sharp
    10) the only advantage of the snes over the sega genesis is that it is much easier to program for it and many things could be achieved more easily.
That is why I see the Sega genesis as an exclusive console dedicated to only experienced programmers, the quality depended on the programmers and not on the machine, the snes is one more console of the trade, but even so the genesis broke the face of the snes in European territory by far.
That's why I say that the snes would be my second option, and I'm not detracting from the fact that it also has incredible games.
    All the best

I grew up with the SNES one as a kid, never knowing what the Genesis version actually looked like. Turns out...was missing out quite a bit.
Several animation frames were removed for the SNES version, which is probably why I never understood how the stage clear animation looked like Woody was frustrated unlike the Genesis version that makes it more clear he's doing a victory dance.
A lot of image stills from the movie were removed for the SNES version, which makes the cutscenes a bit more enjoyable to look at compared to just some plain text in a few of the screens.
A minigame, the character list before the credits, and an entire level completely gone in the SNES version. Also certain details like the cord for The Claw boss fight is gone, hitting Buzz in "The Buzz Clip" level makes you slow down in the SNES version as opposed to just going past him in the Genesis version, and the balloons releasing flies as opposed to marbles.
The larger resolution makes the game look better; also less squished compared to the SNES version which was a problem I had with the game in a recent run I did. Also, colors are better on the eyes in the Genesis version; a majority of its graphics are better as well or equal to the SNES version. Only in very specific places is the SNES version better in this regard.
As much as I like the Super NES, the winner to me is the Genesis version in almost every possible way. The only thing I think the SNES version still has over the Genesis version is the audio quality.

Actually if you look at the MIPS ratings of both cpus the SNES is pretty close. It clocks in about the same speed due to it have a much more efficient design. The SNES can also push double the amount of data (Theoretically) due to it having a 16bit bus while the Mega Drive/Genesis was stuck to an 8bit bus. The Snes clocks in at about 1.79 MIPS while the M.D./Gen. clocks in at 1.861363 MIPS. Due to the SNES's chip being newer and more efficient it can do the same tasks at a lower clock speed then add in most special effects etc were handled by functions already on its graphics chip. The MD was much more robust in design, but it also had to dedicate clock cycles to special effects that the snes didn't need to. Also Blast Processing is a marketing term mostly, it originally had nothing to do with the CPU but actually some developers figured out a way to basically blast colors and such at the video processor and force it onto the screen by basically writing each scanline. (Its really complex and I don't fully understand it.) It was never used in any commercial videogames as it was very hard to use, but with the added power of the CD accessory they could of used it some people say but no one did. Sadly I think the Snes port of this game was extremely rushed. Its missing many of details, colors aren't really adjusted well (The genesis looks great tbh.) and the music really could of used some fine tuning. Really I hate the music on the SNES version. Only thing that is better on the snes version is the higher color count.
To be honest, I really love the synth on the MD I wish that they could of just combined both into a single system..That would be absolutely fantastic.

    • @solarflare9078
      @solarflare9078 3 роки тому

      *4 months later*
Oh... probably should've read your comment more clearly.
I do have to mention the Mega Drive version is the original version of this game and the SNES version was made later. This is also why the Mega Drive version runs in a higher resolution. The SNES has a much worse resolution than the Mega Drive. 256x224 compared to the Mega Drive's 320x224. Most likely, however, if this was made for the SNES first, the Mega Drive port might use the H32 mode (256x224) to make the porting process easier, like TMNT Hyperstone Heist, Battletoads, etc. (Then again, another TT game, Bram Stoker's Dracula I heard was made for the SNES before being ported to the MD... and it used H40 (320x224) mode). Either way, these resolutions would eventually have to be fit to 4:3 on a CRT back in the day. Since 320x224 was close to more square pixels, all SNES games had to be stretched to fit a 4:3 image on the screen with its 8:7 resolution in square pixels.
Regarding 3D, the Mega Drive was a beast at that. Check out Race Drivin on both systems. Neither used any enhancement chips and they are both arcade ports of the same name. Mega Drive ran at a higher framerate, had more detail, controlled better, etc. Since the Mega Drive had the original version of Toy Story, the SNES had to be cut down (falling logo, missing parallax, smaller sprites, etc).
Regarding the missing "You've Got a Friend in Me" track... I don't know why it isn't there. There's actually a file of that track in the game as well. I think the missing stills, however, is because of memory issues, because while both used 4MB of cartridge space, the way they produce sound for the console isn't. The SNES always relies on samples, and, even with the 64KB limit, it can still eat up a lot of cart memory. The Mega Drive, however, has an FM synthesizer with 6 channels (and a PSG chip that's actually the same as the Master System's). These take up far less space than samples, and thus, take up less memory to use. The 6th FM channel, however, can be turned into a PCM channel to play samples, which is where the drums and voice clips play (and, as this game proves, can be multiplexed to play 4 channels at once, ala Commodore Amiga style, in the title screen).
Regarding overall game elements though, personally, the Mega Drive looks sharper and more full of life than the SNES port. Same with its presentation. Audio, however, I would give to SNES, as the Mega Drive used the shitty GEMS sound driver. Gameplay easily goes to the Mega Drive though, for obvious reasons.

@@CaletoFran The thing the made me give graphics to Mega Drive are the animations. There appears to be a lot of them missing in the SNES (Woody Dancing, Cup bobbing on stage 9, less particle effects, logo falling at beginning not being in 3D, etc), which makes the Mega Drive version feel more "animated" and "alive" in comparison.

Genesis is higher resolution since its outputting at 320x224 while the snes was outputting only 256x224. note how genesis is 4:3 while snes was closer to 1:1. However snes has better color production as you'll notice much less dithering. Also some of the story scene images are non existent in the snes my guess would be that nintendo charged more for higher meg carts so the game publisher tried to cut some stuff out to fit on a lower meg cart.

The sound of both is very good. The version of super nintendo has orchestra effect, but of the greater sensation of mono sound, the one of the mega drive although it does not offer orchestra it is possible to feel the separation of the channels and the stereo sound. Tied here.
In the graphic aspect the Super Nintendo has offers in some stages a paralax (separation of more scenarios). But the processing of the scenarios is slower and noticeable. And although Sega Genesis has less color, the use of the RGB system with better contractions and the scanning mechanism that has already been seen in Pit Fighter, Green Dog and Cool Spot, will greatly favor this game.

I’m a Nintendo fan, there are some parts of the soundtrack I like better on the SNES version (such as Ego Check and Buzz Battle) and there is often more color on the SNES version.
With that said, I’ve played both. The Genesis version is easily superior. One thing that bugged me about the SNES version is the load times. Genesis was the snap of a finger. Genesis also had an extra level (and a bonus game), which is always a huge plus in my book. I also felt the controls were more laggy on the SNES version. You could argue the SNES version is more “artistic” in some ways but from a video game standpoint, I always look at gameplay mechanics first and Genesis easily wins there.
EDIT: There’s also a lot of little things the SNES version didn’t get right. Like in Food and Drink, Buzz only follows you in the Genesis version. In the SNES version he’s just stuck at the beginning. In Revenge of the Toys, the ? balloons above the pole Woody climbs across don’t even break in the SNES version. Not to mention the ridiculous clicking noise in Sid’s room that doesn’t disappear until you collect the health stars. I thought my SNES cartridge was screwed up when I first played this game because of that.

At 22:48 you can see Buzz actually does follow Woody in the SNES version of Food and Drink. Apparently it takes him some time to start moving.

@@narishbeatle Ah you’re correct. Looks like in that level you move a lot more slowly in the SNES version so they gave him a five-second pause at the start to compensate.

This the case with most games developed on Mega Drive first. I think that’s a British thing. Earthworm Jim, Mickey Mania have similar issues. I just don’t think the developers had enough time to start from the ground up optimizing things. When you do, you’ll get things like Street Racer. They are practically different games, and we would all vote for a full mode y detailed track over impressive line scrolling effects. When it comes to exclusives I’m all in with Sega, but games that appeared on both usually looked better on SNES and the ones like this that were developed with Mega Drive in mind first, aren’t that much better in the scale of things, more so just impressive that the mega drive which is significantly less capable is pulling off these type of graphics.

In two levels, the blocks on the shelves are different in both versions. The SNES version gave them more letters other than B and Y with different colors on them, which that I love the graphics, while the SEGA Mega Drive just have them in red, blue and white with B and Y on them. So far, the SNES version have the blocks in better design.

In the Super NES version of Toy Story, the level "Day-Toy-Na", doesn't exist. And in the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version of Toy Story, in the Pizza Planet level called "Food and Drink", the straw in Woody's soda cup lid is missing. Ever notice that? Plus, the Shooting Stars mini-game is a Genesis/Mega Drive exclusive.

SNES Toy Story has superior colors, high-quality voice clips, and the better rendition of "Strange Things," but the Genesis has the faster, more precise gameplay, better music in general (hell, it has "You've got a friend in me," when the SNES version surprisingly doesn't). On their own, they fair well, but the Genesis version has that slight edge to the SNES version in my opinion.
