Heya, Soo just recently Toy Story 2(The PS1 Version) was just added too the PS4/PS5 store. While i can't say anything about the PS5 Version since i don't have a PS5, I played it on PS4 and this might be the best way too play the game. Lots of different visual options too choose from, a rewind feature, Save states, and it plays/runs really well. But most importantly the game is now on modern consoles, soo it's extremely accessible now. If you have a PS4 or PS5, i highly recommend grabbing it, even better if you had it on PS3 because you get it for free on PS4/PS5, it's still a fantastic game. Soo yeah, just wanted too make this pinned comment in case anyone new who just checked out this video was wondering about it, since this vid came out way before it was on PS4/PS5.
The PS4/5 versions aren't very good, just ok. The dpad is mapped to the analog stick which makes the controls more stiff instead of using the analog properly, the cowboy is censored there too, there is a graphical glitch with laser/health bars and there is more texture warping than usual. Funnily enough, on a jailbroken PS4, you can mess with the PS1 Classics emulation and I was able to fix all of these using my own backup that doesn't have censorship. So the "hacker" version is good, the official version however is mediocre, one of the worst PS1 Classics Sony has released so far. It boggles my mind why they never patched this one since Syphon Filter also had the analog problem and they patched it. Also, the PC bug is because of the framerate, if it's higher than 30 then Zurg moves too fast, there are mods that fix this now but it wasn't a problem back then.
My main issue with the PS4/5 versions are indeed the controls. The analog stick functioning as a D Pad is so strange and inferior, I have no idea why they changed the rom to create that issue. There’s also a problem with the camera. For some reason I cannot fathom, you can’t move the camera while moving. You have to come to a standstill which is very annoying, especially when combined with the worse analog controls. This was not an issue with the PS1 original and it baffles me as to why they would even make that change. They literally made changes to the rom which make the game worse. The changes make the PS1 version feel more like the Dreamcast version now that I think about it (which also had fake analog controls and no manual camera movement) although not quite to the same extent. I personally cannot recommend the PS4/5 versions unless they are the only way available for you to play it or if you really want trophies. It’s just a worse version of the game with control issues that weren’t present in the original.
about 4 months ago I think; an update to the game fixed the Left Stick to actually be Analog instead of mimicking the D-Pad so we have full 360 movement AND trophy support. The best version no question. If it could also come to N64 NSO that be insane. Also; the PC version does have a True Widescreen Fix patch which not only gives widescreen resolutions but also modern controller support and fixed 60 fps which solves the issue with Zurg's movement speed.
For extra context for the Toy Story 2 getting deleted portion of this video: They didnt just find backups, one animator who was home on maternity leave had the whole movie backed up with her and when she was given the news that the whole film was accidentally erased, she gave them her copy! 😄✨
Something you didnt notice is that the boss levels require a set number of tokens to advance. The plane requires 3 tomens, the slime monster requires 10, the alien ship requires 25, zurg requires 30 and so on. You likely missed those points because of the amount of tokens you collected😊
I’m glad you covered version differences. I had the DC version years ago and was so frustrated with the control. It’s my favorite console and was so disappointed on how poor of a port it was functionally and graphically. I did not know those problems didn’t exist on the other 2 consoles. I think I’ll give it another try and seek out the PS1 version and play it on PS2 to smooth out some of the rough edges.
The Dreamcast version also has tons of graphical bugs not found on the other systems, such as pop-ins on the edges of the screen and broken transparencies (leaving some sprites inside of black boxes).
I have the PC version, and Zurg isn't fully unbeatable. The trick is to chase him into the corner of the elevator shaft, then jump at him with a fully charged spin attack. Half the time he'll either dodge or get hit but you have to act fast to save yourself from falling off the elevator roof before attacking again. It is doable, but takes a lot of trial and error.
This game, Battle for Bikini Bottom and Mario 64 are the best 3D platformers i've ever played. This is probably the best Pixar game if we're being honest. Crazy how a licensed game can be this good. I also have a big fondness for the music as it takes me back to my childhood in front of the big TV in the living room with the PS1 playing this game. Me and my mom and dad had so much fun finding all the stuff in it. Truly a classic.
This is such a classic. I actually bought this game while on vacation in Denmark and had to play the game in Danish only kinda knowing what the characters were saying. Was still fun though. I'm surprised more games haven't tried to do miniature platforming, it's surprisingly fun to explore everyday environments as a tiny character. Imo, Toy story 3 is not a good follow up as a game, it's far more scripted and disjointled. I was pretty disappointed with it. At least Kingdom Hearts 3 kinda showed what a prope sequel to this game could be like. Regarding the Zurg glitch on PC, this is caused by running the game at 60fps. Limiting the framerate to 30 fixes it
I was told that KingK loved this game so much that he thinks it should be the gold standard for 3D collectathon games, so he'll criticize even SM64 and Banjo-Kazooie for not being like Toy Story 2.
That's so true about the zurg level on the PC version. You could not beat him. As a 8 year old trying to beat the level was so frustrating. I felt like such a failure. Until a few years ago I found out that you couldn't beat him. Best game from my childhood!
This game on PC is a core early childhood memory of mine. I remember the old days, in our old house back in the mid-late 2000s, where my dad would play this game with us, along with games such as Donkey Kong Country and Need For Speed, back before we got a Wii and started playing games like Wii Sports and Mariokart Wii. I will say though, it seems Zurg being unbeatable is specific to only certain PCs, because while he was unbeatable back then, on a more recent playthrough I did on my old laptop (by recent I actually mean like six to eight years ago now XD), I was able to beat him first try using spin attacks (on the exact same copy of the game mind you). I didn't get much further in the game though, because I couldn't figure out the airport levels.
PC version zurg is incredibly tough but not technically impossible just stock up on lives and be prepared to be annoyed I actually just replayed and 100% completed this
I remember having this game as the absolute GOAT back in my childhood... probably side by side with NFS High Stakes, Colling Mcrae 2.0 and Tony hawk pro skater. I still have my OG Playstation working. but non of my TVs has VCR a signal input.
It would be just great if Disney decides to do a remake/remaster of this game, like the way capcom did with RE SERIES or also like Crash Bandicoot Remaster..with all the technology , hd graphics and all modern stuff.. this game is pure nostalgic for those who lived the best period of ps1! WOULD BE JUST GREAT!!
This game is amazing (imo better than sm64). Also the PC version is amazing. Fixes have been developed to make installing the game easier and it runs Really well on modern PCs. (Also the zurg fight on the pc version is due to the game running at 60 fps. It's possible to cap the game at 30 during that stage to make it act normal. Theres also a way to trap him in a corner even at 60fps which speedruners do)
10:14 Thankfully since then there is a fan patch that fixes the Zurg boss glitch as well as many other glitches that plagued the PC version. With those fixes in place, plus the 60fps and all the things that made the PS1 version great, I'd argue that the PC version is now the ULTIMATE version of the game.
10:17 you just triggered an old memory of mine of this game. So I had the ps1 version growing up and a classmate in school had it and we talked about it. He said he stopped playing after he got to Zurg because he couldn’t beat him and I tried to convince him to spin on him and he said it didn’t work because you stated he flies away. It’s now until I just watched your review that there might be some truth to this lmfao
10:25 - I've recently replayed this game on PC and can confirm he's beatable. It's just, if your CPU runs at more than 1GHz, he'll be very annoying. A good way to beat him is to corner him and then jump while spinning. It took a few tries, but it's possible. I still like the PC version the most, because it runs at 60 FPS, which makes the game so smooth and great to play. I've played the PS1 version once and it felt clunky and awful, because I was so used to the PC one. You can also easily force widescreen on PC.
I just got a brand new copy of Toy Story 2 Buzz Lightyear To the Rescue on PC But I haven't unrapped it yet Because I'm still waiting for Other PC Games to Come
The Dreamcast port being the worst was pretty ironic considering how Travelers Tales had pretty much mastered the Genesis and Saturn with what games they released for it so you’d expect them to have no problems with the Dreamcast.
Also question, Are there any differences between this and other Disney PS1 Games that you buy from the PSN Compared to playing them on the disc on PS3? I.e. can you play them in complete full screen are the graphics better etc.?
I didn't get a similar game feel to this, until chibi robo came out on GameCube. I played the PC version as a kid and was horrible at it but the music was awesome. Edit: ZURG IS AWFUL on PC I never beat the game.. Also, the old design of the gunman enemy was on PC. That was before the protests.
Yes for now. With the exception of rise of the underminer(which i'll explain in that review). I'm only covering the pixar games that are directly based on the films plot from 1995-2010
@@CrystalOmega Well, that's a shame, cause I'd argue Scream Team is better than the PS2 game. The PS2 port is actually available on the European PSN store, and I decided to get it on there.

The FMV cutscenes in the game were clips from the 35mm film print of the film, the N64 version of the game used slideshows.
