In this video I do an in-depth review of the Byrna HD Launcher.
The Byrna HD is a gas fired non-lethal personal security device that shoots 68 caliber chemical irritant, kinetic, and inert projectiles.

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Watched your video 2 years before I bought my first Byrna, Enjoyed the refresher. Thank you sir.
I can smell cigarettes and coffee just by watching this video lol
🤣🤣🤣
🤞😂😂😂😂
😂🤣
Yeah, that's me. Sorry.
☕🚬
Lmao
Based on how how did this video, you made this seem like a real firearm and really took good care of this tool. It looks like a valuable investment to have. Great video.
I agree
Keep in mind they get better over time. Right out the box it is very stiff. Everything from the trigger pull to the power improves after a dozen or so co2 cartridges
Good to know, Gyro. Thanks!
Really more power over use?
Just got my black LE kit. Very excited to use it upcoming weekend.
@@anniemz4211After 4 months, what do you think of the Byrna LE now? I ask because I’m trying to decide between the LE and SD.
@anniemz4211 how is the LE (law enforcement) version? Been watching videos from the manufacturer and citizens trying them out. I Carry a Bond Arms Snake Slayer VI. 410 or 45colt. Sometimes glock 27. Wondering if this Is an effective SD option.
Several months ago I bought Byrna HD's for my wife and I. We were impressed by the apparent quality of the launchers and the packaging they came in - everything to get started. We subsequently took the launchers to a local range and were allowed to shoot inert rounds at archery targets - none broke. My initial concern was that the launchers needed to be tuned to higher muzzle velocities (they are apparently shooting some 40-60 FPS below some other launchers such as the PepperBall TCP, Mission TPR, etc.). I reached out to Byrna's customer service via their online contact form and was informed that the archery targets might be designed to absorb shock, that might have caused the rounds not to break. Being concerned that a beer gut on an aggressive assailant might also absorb shock, I asked Byrna if they had any videos of testing inert or live rounds on human targets. They claimed they do but I've only seen the inert and live rounds shot against plywood, fences, signs, carboard targets and a martial arts target (Bob). I did see demos of kinetic rounds being shot at a human target - Bryan Ganz, their CEO. Ganz was able to maintain his footing and even danced around yelling four-letter Anglo Saxon descriptive adjectives. In other words, it didn't incapacitate or take him down. While I know kinetic rounds will cause pain, I'm much more interested in the chemical rounds that will cause incapacitation for a period of time. Regarding the muzzle velocity of the Byrna, I also reached out to Byrna and asked if you could/should increase the velocity and, if so, how. A customer service rep who calls himself Johny Byrna (which raised my hopes I'd reached someone with real product knowledge), told me the Byrna HD could be adjusted via a portal on the back, but Johny gave no further direction, insights or suggestions. In other words, there's an adjustment hole on the back - go for it. Despite all of this rambling, I really wanted to get your insights on the effectiveness of these launchers against live targets, since I've never been attacked by a sign, fence or martial arts dummy.
Damn, That's a real good important question and should be investigated and proven by all of these companies that produces self defense tool's that your life may have to rely on👍👍
How fast do you think the balls was actually traveling in your opinion when you tested it out and how many shots did you get out of each Co2 cartridge please? Thanks in advance👍
@@catherineharris4746 just a guess - 250-270 FPS. It was obvious to me when I emailed them at their customer service address that these people are sales oriented and probably respond to inquiries using a script/prepared responses or they ask someone else in customer service. The responses have never been detailed and complete.
So did you find the portal in the back make an adjustment? Did it work?
Alternate the pellets in the clip for maximum effect. Two pepper pellet and 3 kinetic. Your first two shots should be the pepper(directly to the chest) then use kinetic to the neck or groin area.
Absolutely the best video review by far I've seen on this self-defense tool, very nice!
Still NEED TO KNOW THE LAWS IN YOUR STATE. I just completed a court case. (Dismissed) but still. Had to loose time off work. All self defense. No projectiles fired. Still had to defend myself in court.
KNOW YOUR STATES LAWS.
I bought this for home defense. Was a bit disappointed that Byrna doesn't have everything in stock, but believed in their hype. After many weeks I received the launcher. Then I tried to purchase extra magazines (good luck with that) and the HD projectiles with extra CO2. After the $75 price tag and no opportunity to buy the magazines, they hit me up with $30 shipping. When i asked for a code they told me to spend $100 for free shipping before i could get the shipping. But I can't get to $100 because they DONT HAVE the magazines. So I would have to spend the $75 PLUS $30 Shipping AND THEN another expense whenever they have the magazines for ANOTHER $30 Shipping. I tried to explain that and Daniel just said thanks, I'll forward the cancellation on for you. Great Service....? Not how i would handle it. Be aware when you choose on your HD launcher all of the variables. I'm now shopping on 3rd party accessories... not my first choice but I refuse to be taken advantage of.
I hear all that. Ive ordered the gun and have had two. Reached out to them and they got right back with me. Although i haven't had the same situation. Would definitely like a few more mags. Thanks for the review. Will use that as leverage to get more mags.
Shouldn't need to be bolstered into buying more than one wants
Hmm....sounds like TERRIBLE customer service. I may not buy one after all. No sense carrying one if you can't get supplies for it.
@@scottandrews4822 They have them in stock. The OP's complaint was a year ago when everyone their grandma was buying them for protection. If you check their site right now, they have a pre-Black Friday sale going on and you can save some money on a self defense kit. It's well worth the investment, especially if you live in California like I do.
This is a an interesting idea, a non lethal fire arm….
A substitute for a gun where it’s not allowed to be carried…
A gentleman said that in order to have some kind of protection when he couldn’t carry a real gun, so he found an air soft gun that was close to the real thing not only in looks but in performance as well.
Thought provoking video
As a society we need to vote anti-gun politicians out so we don’t have places where we can’t carry. Because it’s those Places where we need the most protection.
Have you ever noticed those who work the hardest to disarm us are the one to seem to do the least to protect us? Not only do they not want us carrying our own gun, but they want to get rid of the police too. What’s up with that?
Just got the Byrna LE and it's badass! Indoor shooting with the life size Target Tent is a blast 💥💥💥💥💥
Almost got his dog there.
You got the coolest dog ever! Looked like he was jumping to catch the pepper balls.
Thanks for doing a review I was checking out the product for personal safety and it's nice to see an unbiased person demo the product thank you have a great day
Really appreciate the review mine is in the mail!
So far so good, just ordered 2 of them 😎🤞
Enjoy the long wait.
Great video. I've owned one for 6 months and carry it daily. I also carry a 9mm when legal. Buy some of the rubber magazine covers to keep the balls from falling out of extra mags.
I just found this channel and I like it! You have a great way of conveying information. It’s friendly and old-school at the same time.Real. You were getting pretty good with that thing at the end. Accuracy went right up. Thanks for the video. It was great. Pepper powder. Let me get a taste of that. He says… maybe put some on his eggs for breakfast. Old school
Excellent review! Would like to see a follow-up covering the optional laser sight (effective in daylight or only at night?) and cleaning / oiling.
Blue and green, and it's truly mean.
Most people aren’t alert enough to their surroundings to recognize a problem outside of 15 feet
Looks like this non-firearm is a huge win for Californians. I'd love one but I'd also love Castle Doctrine and open carry.
I like this guy! Wish I had hom for a dad or grandpa..he is cool!
Golly. Just what I need for home protection. Reached the age where I can't rack the pistol. And, a pistol is no good if you can't even cock it. This is perfect. I'd never heard of it before I saw a video of an RV'er who didn't want to shoot a hole in his RV and this made a 2nd best option. And, you can practice with it. Also, no sounds to speak of when you pull the trigger! Just a good option for me. Thanks for the video.
It would be nice if it could do 2 magazines with one cartridge staying consistent. But in an emergency it looks like it would work well, specially with the chemical
I think the first cartridge pooped out early because he used it to demonstrate the weapon to us prior to taking it to the range there. So it was already partially used. The second cartridge worked well, shooting three magazines!
Great video Ron. Love the neutral and honest approach.
I just bought one and really enjoy it. Great review!
Well done honest review. Thanks. Just bought one
You are Awesome I cannot wait for my wife to watch your VD, I am waiting for her BYRNA to arrive.
This guy is a great American 👍
PLEASE push to try to allow the self defense Byrna to be a LEGALIZED in N.Y.C
Hitting the target is important, but it's the powder that does all the work.
Wow Officer Jim Lahey from the Trailer Park Boys has a pretty damn good shot.
RANDY!!!!!
Interesting, and I would like one, but way too expensive for an air gun
Waiting for mine to get here and found your video. Great job of covering this product. You covered all the bases. Thank you.
How strong is it
Very good video. So good in fact that I subscribed to the channel and hit the bell icon. From reading some of the comment this looks expensive but when you think about having to take a life how expensive is it. I am a former Marine so I have no qualms about lethality if it is needed. I just would rather not if I can avoid it and this looks like a good non lethal option. The only thing that I see that might be "slightly" wrong with this is that it LOOKS like a real semi auto. So as a POC if you are wearing this an have a LEO encounter YOU might be the one ending up dead.
John Henry good point. Hope the company sees this and makes some type of bright colored version or can figure something like that out to tip off LEOs.
Then again, some creative criminal could always try to paint their guns bright so as to deceive LEOs. Tough issue.
Thank you 🙏 for this review Ron!
Nice review. Very professional and in-depth.
Please watch the Turncoat Tactical review of this product before buying. I appreciate your review. This product will not stop an assailant unless direct hits to the face occur. Get a can of Sabre Frontiersman for $40 bucks(comes with holster) and pocket the the $350 bucks you'll save
Excellent
Best review !!!
I got one ordered
Never mind the gritters, it's the humans , l love it, for Canada 🇨🇦 since l cant have anything, and probably won't even qualify for that !!
I'd love to carry that like a cowboy 🤠 especially after the commercial of the guy checking doors, and all the weirdos, just for safety!! Love your video ❤
Great review! Thanks for posting. 😊
I can smell the gas all over here in Philippines! Nice review..willl buy one soon
Still a pretty good grouping at 60ft with essentially paintballs... sheesh you are one hell of a shot!
Love this channel!
Howdy from Newport Beach California… i’m going to buy a Byrna HD.. I just say thank you so much for your video I learned a lot..(my question is can I carry this in public to protect myself in California?)…
Even your dog gets excited LOL he likes it
She's ready to hunt anything and everything, even practice Byrna balls.
The problem with pepper balls and the like is that in concealed spaces, e.g. your house the pepper powder also effect your eyes and nostrils and its kind of difficult to see what the intruder is doing thru tears and sneezing.
Great ( UN mentioned) point!
Yep - it's much easier just being a victim. Idiot
most profesional video ive seen thank you sir
So very useful!
Purchased mine August 5th - still waiting! Website means it when they say 10+ weeks shipping.
Covid shutdowns must have gummed up the works. Took me months to get mine, too.
Hey something's behind you!😱😂👍👍
In the meantime he was a little off on those bear spray prices. They're 40 bucks for an 8 lb canister but I bought a twin pack of 7 for 65 at Cabela's.
great video sir. ❤
question can you mix the different pellets like the first one would be a hard pellet the second one would be the tear gas one and then the third one would be a rubber one
Wow Great instructions on this weapon!
I definitely trust Ron's opinion and put some weight behind it. I've watched a few other reviews (all good) but his positive review is good enough for me
Why not use the 12g co2 cartridge? It also need a bigger magazine like 8 to 10 balls to be more effective...
hope i can get that here in the Philippines good for self defense
Ikr?! Maybe they can shipped/mail it to the Philippines... just hope that nobody will steal it.
One comment I will make for this good review…IF…you were to pull this on me,..ok..?….I WOULD assume it is a far more threatening handgun, and behave accordingly. Including deciding to match/ beat the threat. Be sure that you keep that in mind when confronting a threat capable of returning fire. Otherwise..what a cool new tool!..Thanks, Ron.
What is the ft lbs muzzle energy of it? To be legal in the UK it can not be over 6 ft lbs. An air rifle can not be over 12 ft lbs (minimum 2 foot barrel) . So a good AR regulated to 12 ft lbs would be good for the UK. Launching strings through trees to erect lines is also very handy.
How to stop an intruder in the middle of the nigh 10mm my friend.
First video of yours I've seen. Sub'd !
one more question. so, the "First" pull will NOT launch a "Round" correct??? the first one punctures it?
I think I’ve heard guns referred to as burners
That's a phone
600 to 700 fps !?!?! Yea right
More like 300 fps
Great info! Does it come with a holster?
Looks like my Springfield XDS 45 subcompact
Looks like a Hi-Point pistol to me. I do think this would be good to use by police to break up rioters. I just cannot trust this pistol to defend my life. I will stick with my Ruger Commander 1911 .45 with Federal HST 230 grain JHP
great video, i keep one in my vehicle!
The Part about the CO2 cylinders was particularly informative. I would have (wrongly) guessed that this would be the weak spot.
It's a shame he didn't use the key to tighten the seal so it didn't leak CO2. He was thinking that tightening would puncture the CO2 which isn't the case, pulling the trigger the first time punctures the CO2 cartridge.
@@Joreel good to know
How many shots can you get out of the gas cartridge? Thx
I think I read, on the Byrna website, about 14 shots.
2 magazines. you can certainly fire more, but you may diminish the power somewhat.
Good video, but can you answer one thing? Is the tear gas in powder form?
Wish you would have went over the price point but very well produced congratulations
if you were interested in buying it you would go to the web site and find out...not that hard.
Can you reuse the hard plastic projectiles?
you can reuse the kinetic rounds, but you have to make sure they are not cracked or chipped.
When the criminal shoots you with a real gun then you know you made a mistake!
Its perfect
I was thinking of getting one but after seeing this excellent video (thanks Ron) realize the reloading of the CO2 cartridge is useless as designed and should be better. Imagine needing to do so under duress? I'll wait for the next model.
This review is two years old. There’s now a new model, called SD.
Ron you know that will not come close to stop in a bear especially a aggressively Charging grizzly bear🐻
Correction: You can puncture and shoot on the first trigger pull.
Yes you can do that but the first shot will be a lot less FPS
I got one of those 👍
The one thing you didn't answer was how many shots before having to replace the CO2 cartridge.
It's practically not legal in most states on their website.
Large BBS oh my
Really good video man, thanks.
You're welcome.
I've owned mine for a year-and-a-half I have serious issues with a trigger it's sticks and in that time of desperation this is what you don't want
Seems pretty accurate. Seems bulky on the hip.
drive off “two-legged critters.”? ya… those darn teenage kangaroos
Great video, excellent explanation, nice HD option. On the lighter side, does Geissle do any two-stage triggers for the Byrna?
Pretty sure they will 😂
It doesnt lose pressure if the Co2 is not used over time ? I mean th ed Co2 cartridge?
okay. this stuff is not pleasant to inhale but would it stop you from robbing or assaulting someone if pelted with 1 or more of these in the chest?
Hitting a dude in the pelotas with one of those hard inerts will DEFINITELY...give him a moment of pause.
Light makes combo light with light and laser!
O Light...
When your life is on the line what would prefer a launcher or a real real gun? The launcher leaves the attack standing and breathing, while a gun has a better chance of putting a attacker down and not breathing. I have been shot with paintball markers turned up to over 300 fps and it broke the skin through clothes. When my life matters I choice a weapon that will stop the attacker. A good lock blade knife will be a better choice than a 60 cal launcher that is nonlethal and meant not to kill.
Great video. Keep up the good work!
This gentleman gives me the local sheriff vibe in some rural Virginia county. Good old country boy.
Best comment of the day
AWESOME review! Straight forward, NO BS and a really cool guy to demonstrate the launcher. He reminds me of a Army drill instructor I had back in basic training.
haha - except this guy's 1,000% nicer - of course it's a different Army from 30+years ago when I was in.
@@sstritmatter2158 I was going to say the same thing. If this guy reminds you of your drill instructor, then your drill instructor was too nice.
There were no BS over the time.
I joined in 1975 when Viet Nam ended. My DI's were Viet Nam vets. I retired from the Army also....did you?@@sstritmatter2158
My DI's were Viet Nam vets. How bout those apples?@@JesusistheonetrueGod
Thanks. In California, as far as I understand ,you can’t shoot pepper projectiles but you can shoot inert ones
leave. save yourself.
You have got to be frikken kidding?
If you use a box with a hole cut in the front to hold your paper targets, you can save all of your balls. Just hang a piece of carpet inside from a stick over the top to catch and drop them into the box. It's also lighter than ladders and wood to carry to the range.
Thanks for the good idea, Kurt.
@@RonSpomerOutdoors How many shots per cartridge, and can the balls be reused ? Thanks
If I were to get one of these, I would get the Orange or yellow one, so as to make sure it was not mistaken for a firearm if I was in a situation where firearms were prohibited. Just sayin’
If someone drew this on me in a non- lethal situation, I’d think it was an odd colored Sig226. The result would be a dead paintball gun shooter and me in court for years and maybe jail. This is a bad idea.
@@gunner5916 I doubt someone who has one of these would pull it on a another legal gun owner.I have owned firearms and mace guns for decades and only had to "show" mine twice and both times were at an ATM that was a hotspot for robberies--and btw I had to use the ATM as I worked for a business that made its deposits there so I had no choice on using it.I would worry more about the gangbangers in lib cities drawing on you then someone buying one of these.
Just my opinion but yellow is best... the orange still sort of looks like something someone might do as a custom gun these days.
@@gunner5916 Yeah that's part of why I'd be wary of these. The orange actually did look like a real gun to me at first.
Oh, bad idea to brandish a non-lethal on someone with a firearm! Doesn’t matter what color it is!
I just fired 10 rounds for the first time. Now it doesnt work, cant get a hold of customer service
Try a new cylinder.
I bought a Byrna launcher primarily to discourage aggressive off-leash dogs from coming at my puppy on neighborhood walks. Haven't had the opportunity to try it for that yet, but I have shot it quite a bit. I am very impressed with it, it is beautifully made and very accurate. The projectiles whack my garage impressive snap. My grown son wanted to feel what it was like to get shot with it, and I shot him from about 10' away with a brand new gas canister. He was wearing a lightweight winter coat (and held a 2x6 to protect his head in case my aim was bad). I shot him in the torso, and we both realized that with any kind of heavy clothing on, being shot with an inert projectile doesn't hurt at all. Made me wary of the idea of using this against an attacking man with a jacket on.
Great info and real world test. I guess you must use the pepper pellets only...
Wpw...not as effective as it looks.
Aim shot with pepper ball at the face/head..
Save yourself time and money and buy yourself some riot rounds basiclly steel shot covered by rubber and mix it with max rounds….those kinetic rounds are a waste of time in the winter let alone an aggressive person. However a riot shot with some oc/pepperball works wonders 👍 depending on your state you might not be able to get irritant rounds but riot balls are legal
What would you consider an agressive dog?
I'll tell you from personal experience that works great on grizzly bear. Shot one twice once in the face once in the shoulder that was the end of my problem with Mama.
I was going to ask if it works for bears... fabulous!
@@allsaintsacademy9344 I still carry a bear spray backup. Just in case.
@@petew6974 thanks, need to look into this.
Depends on the mood of the bear, the bear's intention, etc. What was your "problem" with Mama?
@@allsaintsacademy9344 100% everytime. Bears literally run away as soon as they see me now.
As with everything I buy, I researched the living daylights out of these. Here's what I found. 1) The Byrna guns are 'twitchy' and not as reliable as some others. 2) The price of these Byrna, SALT and others are all around three to four hundred dollars with the exception of one. *The Umarex T4E P2P HDP .50 Pepper CO2 Gun which comes with 10 Pepper powder and 10 Rubber Ball rounds is under one hundred dollars, and I've not had a single failure unless the co2 tank is nearly exhausted.* (plus the Umarex holds six rounds rather than five and uses standard 12 gram co2 bottles rather than these dinky 8 gram)
Your comment just confirmed to me to get the Umarex instead, Byrna seems to have more projectile variety but id like to rely on something.
@Chad I won't disagree (which is why I own a dozen firearms), but here in Oregon I'm not so sure that I couldn't be 110% justified in a shooting and STILL face charges. At least if I fire this first and THEN took the perp out? I could say I gave him every chance. (I also bought it to carry, because I don't want a carry permit..... not a list I want to be on)
@@russf6572 I’m in Washington, I’m looking at this for non lethal options. Even though I believe in having a real gun this is a very good alternative.
@@qrcline You can't trust any blue state to have your back if you're forced into a deadly encounter. Here in Multnomah county, _'george soro's installed DA mike schrunk'_ spent the last year dropping all charges against antifa/blm rioters while prosecuting people who try to defend themselves from them. *THAT tells me all I need to know.*
At 64 and on a fixed income, moving isn't an option, so this 'less than lethal' pepperball gun will get pulled first (at least until the bottom falls completely out and ALL law is out the window)
