I bought a Byrna launcher primarily to discourage aggressive off-leash dogs from coming at my puppy on neighborhood walks. Haven't had the opportunity to try it for that yet, but I have shot it quite a bit. I am very impressed with it, it is beautifully made and very accurate. The projectiles whack my garage impressive snap. My grown son wanted to feel what it was like to get shot with it, and I shot him from about 10' away with a brand new gas canister. He was wearing a lightweight winter coat (and held a 2x6 to protect his head in case my aim was bad). I shot him in the torso, and we both realized that with any kind of heavy clothing on, being shot with an inert projectile doesn't hurt at all. Made me wary of the idea of using this against an attacking man with a jacket on.
Save yourself time and money and buy yourself some riot rounds basiclly steel shot covered by rubber and mix it with max rounds….those kinetic rounds are a waste of time in the winter let alone an aggressive person. However a riot shot with some oc/pepperball works wonders 👍 depending on your state you might not be able to get irritant rounds but riot balls are legal
Keep in mind they get better over time. Right out the box it is very stiff. Everything from the trigger pull to the power improves after a dozen or so co2 cartridges

If you use a box with a hole cut in the front to hold your paper targets, you can save all of your balls. Just hang a piece of carpet inside from a stick over the top to catch and drop them into the box. It's also lighter than ladders and wood to carry to the range.
best Byrna hd review ive seen ... your delivery is by far the least boring and most efficient ive seen. literally you were answering my questions as i asked them. nice job
Several months ago I bought Byrna HD's for my wife and I. We were impressed by the apparent quality of the launchers and the packaging they came in - everything to get started. We subsequently took the launchers to a local range and were allowed to shoot inert rounds at archery targets - none broke. My initial concern was that the launchers needed to be tuned to higher muzzle velocities (they are apparently shooting some 40-60 FPS below some other launchers such as the PepperBall TCP, Mission TPR, etc.). I reached out to Byrna's customer service via their online contact form and was informed that the archery targets might be designed to absorb shock, that might have caused the rounds not to break. Being concerned that a beer gut on an aggressive assailant might also absorb shock, I asked Byrna if they had any videos of testing inert or live rounds on human targets. They claimed they do but I've only seen the inert and live rounds shot against plywood, fences, signs, carboard targets and a martial arts target (Bob). I did see demos of kinetic rounds being shot at a human target - Bryan Ganz, their CEO. Ganz was able to maintain his footing and even danced around yelling four-letter Anglo Saxon descriptive adjectives. In other words, it didn't incapacitate or take him down. While I know kinetic rounds will cause pain, I'm much more interested in the chemical rounds that will cause incapacitation for a period of time. Regarding the muzzle velocity of the Byrna, I also reached out to Byrna and asked if you could/should increase the velocity and, if so, how. A customer service rep who calls himself Johny Byrna (which raised my hopes I'd reached someone with real product knowledge), told me the Byrna HD could be adjusted via a portal on the back, but Johny gave no further direction, insights or suggestions. In other words, there's an adjustment hole on the back - go for it. Despite all of this rambling, I really wanted to get your insights on the effectiveness of these launchers against live targets, since I've never been attacked by a sign, fence or martial arts dummy.
Damn, That's a real good important question and should be investigated and proven by all of these companies that produces self defense tool's that your life may have to rely on👍👍
How fast do you think the balls was actually traveling in your opinion when you tested it out and how many shots did you get out of each Co2 cartridge please? Thanks in advance👍
@@catherineharris4746 just a guess - 250-270 FPS. It was obvious to me when I emailed them at their customer service address that these people are sales oriented and probably respond to inquiries using a script/prepared responses or they ask someone else in customer service. The responses have never been detailed and complete.
Alternate the pellets in the clip for maximum effect. Two pepper pellet and 3 kinetic. Your first two shots should be the pepper(directly to the chest) then use kinetic to the neck or groin area.
I'll tell you from personal experience that works great on grizzly bear. Shot one twice once in the face once in the shoulder that was the end of my problem with Mama.
As with everything I buy, I researched the living daylights out of these. Here's what I found. 1) The Byrna guns are 'twitchy' and not as reliable as some others. 2) The price of these Byrna, SALT and others are all around three to four hundred dollars with the exception of one. *The Umarex T4E P2P HDP .50 Pepper CO2 Gun which comes with 10 Pepper powder and 10 Rubber Ball rounds is under one hundred dollars, and I've not had a single failure unless the co2 tank is nearly exhausted.* (plus the Umarex holds six rounds rather than five and uses standard 12 gram co2 bottles rather than these dinky 8 gram)
@Chad I won't disagree (which is why I own a dozen firearms), but here in Oregon I'm not so sure that I couldn't be 110% justified in a shooting and STILL face charges. At least if I fire this first and THEN took the perp out? I could say I gave him every chance. (I also bought it to carry, because I don't want a carry permit..... not a list I want to be on)
@@qrcline You can't trust any blue state to have your back if you're forced into a deadly encounter. Here in Multnomah county, _'george soro's installed DA mike schrunk'_ spent the last year dropping all charges against antifa/blm rioters while prosecuting people who try to defend themselves from them. *THAT tells me all I need to know.* At 64 and on a fixed income, moving isn't an option, so this 'less than lethal' pepperball gun will get pulled first (at least until the bottom falls completely out and ALL law is out the window)
I bought this for home defense. Was a bit disappointed that Byrna doesn't have everything in stock, but believed in their hype. After many weeks I received the launcher. Then I tried to purchase extra magazines (good luck with that) and the HD projectiles with extra CO2. After the $75 price tag and no opportunity to buy the magazines, they hit me up with $30 shipping. When i asked for a code they told me to spend $100 for free shipping before i could get the shipping. But I can't get to $100 because they DONT HAVE the magazines. So I would have to spend the $75 PLUS $30 Shipping AND THEN another expense whenever they have the magazines for ANOTHER $30 Shipping. I tried to explain that and Daniel just said thanks, I'll forward the cancellation on for you. Great Service....? Not how i would handle it. Be aware when you choose on your HD launcher all of the variables. I'm now shopping on 3rd party accessories... not my first choice but I refuse to be taken advantage of.
I hear all that. Ive ordered the gun and have had two. Reached out to them and they got right back with me. Although i haven't had the same situation. Would definitely like a few more mags. Thanks for the review. Will use that as leverage to get more mags. Shouldn't need to be bolstered into buying more than one wants
@@scottandrews4822 They have them in stock. The OP's complaint was a year ago when everyone their grandma was buying them for protection. If you check their site right now, they have a pre-Black Friday sale going on and you can save some money on a self defense kit. It's well worth the investment, especially if you live in California like I do.
Actually, from the Byrna user manual it states this: "Byrna chemical irritant projectiles cause an immediate burning sensation in the attacker’s eyes and respiratory system (hence the name “bur-nah”) incapacitating an attacker."
If I were to get one of these, I would get the Orange or yellow one, so as to make sure it was not mistaken for a firearm if I was in a situation where firearms were prohibited. Just sayin’
If someone drew this on me in a non- lethal situation, I’d think it was an odd colored Sig226. The result would be a dead paintball gun shooter and me in court for years and maybe jail. This is a bad idea.
@@gunner5916 I doubt someone who has one of these would pull it on a another legal gun owner.I have owned firearms and mace guns for decades and only had to "show" mine twice and both times were at an ATM that was a hotspot for robberies--and btw I had to use the ATM as I worked for a business that made its deposits there so I had no choice on using it.I would worry more about the gangbangers in lib cities drawing on you then someone buying one of these.
You should do an update, looks like a really popular video! Byrna released a barrel attachment called Byrna Boost. Pricing at $40 it's a great deal, increasing power, range, and will fire up to 30 rounds.
@@hunterm.moreno4201 dogs are pretty much unbothered by chemical irritants. Thats why K9s are sent into buildings that are filled with CS or OC. Carry a gun.
@ALLDAYSLAUGHTER I wouldn't say that, given I've shot these C02 guns all my life, I've learned how to draw it, and fire dead into an eye socket at 30ft. That's not gonna letcha stay on your feet, promise. Your legs, wouldn't, and it's that simple. How do I know this? I practice on dummies. From standing, prone, rolling, and different sitting angle, the last thing you'll see is a little ball, and then, night. Well, likely, fill your shorts flopping, then, night. Sorry so long, but there absolutely are people out there that can game a weapon like this to a ridiculous capability. Stop pretending this isn't possibly deadly, it very much, multiple ways, can be.
How's it going Ron. Great video! Very through. In Michigan we can only get the Kinetic and Pepper rounds, not the teargas/pepper rounds. But I believe with good shot placement, it'll get the job done. I normally carry a firearm, but this is a great alternative when you can't carry a firearm or just need a second option for self defense. Not all self defense encounters need a lethal option. Otherwise, law enforcement wouldn't carry mace or tasers to subdue an aggressor. Personally, sometimes I carry both. A pocket firearm and my Byrna HD. Hopefully we'll never have to use either, except for practice and recreational. Lol. But it's nice to know that we have options... Just in case. Stay safe and healthy. Peace
Good assessment, nw. I would imagine many would-be attackers would assume they'd been hit by a real bullet if shot with a hard plastic Byrna ball. Not a veteran, hardened criminal/thug, but plenty of young wanna-bes.
All concealed carriers should have a pepper, irritant alternative. I've seen too many vids on UA-cam where the perp is shot to death but wasn't necessarily a lethal threat.
@@r.daniels1165 Good point. The problem comes in when someone doesn't know the difference between the two. Knowing when to use lethal force and knowing when to use non lethal force. This is where good training and experience comes in. Stay safe and healthy. Peace
I was on the fence about one of these but this video absolutely hit and answered all the questions. I'm sure this will work adequately but not lethally on the parking lot commandos if necessary.
Well done Thorough and good explanation of the use of the cartridges. I saw another review of this product and they never once mentioned the cartridge and how full it was or wasn’t for, because that obviously makes a difference. Thinking about getting one of these stuff until the more research
I have read that pulling the trigger punctures the CO2 cartridge. You don't leave a punctured CO2 cartridge in it - it is designed to use it up once punctured (i.e. don't shoot five rounds and put it away leaving the partially used CO2 cartridge in it for next time use). You need to keep a new one in the tube if you are going to carry it around. I had a BB gun when I was a youth that took those cartridges and I would leave it in there until it was used up, store it, put it away still screwed in and you could do that but not with this Byrna gun. I also know if you punctured a new CO2 cartridge and unscrewed it, it would FREEZE so much you'd get a frost burn if you touched it. Anyway, interesting concept. Another note I just thought of beware of head shots - if you hit someone's eye it might knock their eye out/permanent damage and if you cannot justify using the Byrna that spells hefty lawsuits so beware and be able to justify using it on someone. I'm not going into Use of Force scenarios- is a whole other video(s) in itself.
Thanks for doing a review I was checking out the product for personal safety and it's nice to see an unbiased person demo the product thank you have a great day
@11:20 - It's amazing how many reviewers don't even bother to read the manual. You do NOT need to pull the trigger once to prime the gun with air pressure! That's dangerous misinformation. It will puncture, prime AND fire a projectile all on the FIRST trigger pull. Also, the manual states to snug up the CO2 cap with allen key, not thumb tightened. (That's why this guy is wasting CO2 so fast.) PLEASE - read manuals!
@@jdsim9173 At the time stamp in my original post, it doesnt sound he is using that mathird at all. The expert states, "after you pull it from your holster, you pull trigger one time to puncture it, and every time you pull the trigger 'AFTER' that, you launch a ball, provided you have a loaded clip in it". That process would NOT work quite right with the safety on OR off. Again, bad info.
This is a an interesting idea, a non lethal fire arm…. A substitute for a gun where it’s not allowed to be carried… A gentleman said that in order to have some kind of protection when he couldn’t carry a real gun, so he found an air soft gun that was close to the real thing not only in looks but in performance as well. Thought provoking video
As a society we need to vote anti-gun politicians out so we don’t have places where we can’t carry. Because it’s those Places where we need the most protection. Have you ever noticed those who work the hardest to disarm us are the one to seem to do the least to protect us? Not only do they not want us carrying our own gun, but they want to get rid of the police too. What’s up with that?
Great video. I've owned one for 6 months and carry it daily. I also carry a 9mm when legal. Buy some of the rubber magazine covers to keep the balls from falling out of extra mags.
If you ever played paintball with a CO2 marker magfed you know that pellets tends to deform while sitting in the mag for too long. And also if that happens could lead to a pellet jam or pellet chop inside the barrel. Did you find someway to prevent this to happen? If you can't have a loaded magazine in your home I wouldn't see the point in having this gun at all.
Ron, Well many quite don't make it across the river technically as well as safety-wise you did an excellent job showing every feature specific without putting anyone to sleep. Thank you for the detail ....new subscriber
Under 300 fps and I've seen a bunch of videos where they don't fire or jam up. People have an issues with customer service. I hope that changes take on super interested in one of these but not if it's hit or miss I need to be assured it will work when I need it to.
I just found this channel and I like it! You have a great way of conveying information. It’s friendly and old-school at the same time.Real. You were getting pretty good with that thing at the end. Accuracy went right up. Thanks for the video. It was great. Pepper powder. Let me get a taste of that. He says… maybe put some on his eggs for breakfast. Old school
How many effectively-powered shots do you get from a single CO2 cartridge before the noticeable power drop-off (or the cartridge replacement is needed)?
Really been thinking about getting one, cause not everyone wants to go through the hassle that comes with actually sho*ting someone out of self defense. But 350$ just seems a little steep for the average working person or family. Just can’t justify spending that much on it. I’d say around 200$ would make it an easier purchase in a lot of people’s mind.
EXCELLENT video ! 👍👍. Both the information and the production quality is first class. I'm real close to ordering one of the Byrna HDs. Thanks for the great video.
It is very cool for non lethal shooting! But approaching things realistically I would want back up ability, such as a fire arm, knife, pepper spray etc... .
Great to the point video. I still recall boot camp and the gas chamber. Thank you for the information. I was wondering how long a cartridge lasted, out shooting, say, how many rounds it will shoot.
You can tell by watching the video… by the second magazine, it was lobbing the rounds out there. Must take a bunch of CO2 to push one of those big fat projectiles!
The SD version will fire up to 15 shots where the SDXL version is good for 30 shots. Also you need to use the key to tighten the seal which you can see he didn't do because the thought it would puncture the CO2, so as a result he wasn't getting the full use of the CO2 which was probably leaking once he pulled the trigger puncturing the cartridge.
Very good video. So good in fact that I subscribed to the channel and hit the bell icon. From reading some of the comment this looks expensive but when you think about having to take a life how expensive is it. I am a former Marine so I have no qualms about lethality if it is needed. I just would rather not if I can avoid it and this looks like a good non lethal option. The only thing that I see that might be "slightly" wrong with this is that it LOOKS like a real semi auto. So as a POC if you are wearing this an have a LEO encounter YOU might be the one ending up dead.
I keep mine with the unbroken co2 cartridge in it, 1 oc + tear gas round at the top of the mag and 4 inert shorts after that, make it most useful I'd think
@@brekkis I tend to agree with you. Have the good stuff ready in case you experience the the worst scenario. Even 5 shots at a group of 5 or more will disperse enough dust to get them all. Then load your 2nd clip and finish them off with some pain.
Golly. Just what I need for home protection. Reached the age where I can't rack the pistol. And, a pistol is no good if you can't even cock it. This is perfect. I'd never heard of it before I saw a video of an RV'er who didn't want to shoot a hole in his RV and this made a 2nd best option. And, you can practice with it. Also, no sounds to speak of when you pull the trigger! Just a good option for me. Thanks for the video.
The bear pepper spray is actually weaker in strength of pain then spray ment for humans I promise it looks cool and better the huge spray and high pressure but not the same heat
At first I was hesitant about getting one because my first thought was co2 leak down right when you need it (rubber seal don't hold over time), but was glad to see a solution to that with a way to keep cartridge unpunctured at the ready.
Bears have much more sensitive sinuses, bear spray is not as rough as human spray so though I wouldn’t want to find out I would imagine it would be effective.
It's best to alternate the pepper balls with the kinetic rounds in the magazines. Loading the mags with all pepper balls was causing some to break open in the mags.
Really well done video! You're a pleasure to watch. I'm interested in one of these. I already have a TR50, which I shoot in my basement with rubber balls. I love air guns. Especially when I can carry one with a big bore! Great video. Thanks Ron!
I think this is valuable for daughters who go off to college, people who live in states that make firearm ownership damn near impossible (looking at you NY). With a real firearm, a decision always needs to be made about whether I want to take a life right now. Does every situation warrant ending a life? No. But that thought is erased with this. It is only designed to buy you enough time to flee, or gain the advantage while a person is balled up in pain.
It would be nice if it could do 2 magazines with one cartridge staying consistent. But in an emergency it looks like it would work well, specially with the chemical
I think the first cartridge pooped out early because he used it to demonstrate the weapon to us prior to taking it to the range there. So it was already partially used. The second cartridge worked well, shooting three magazines!
Thank you excellent review for me I have been looking at this launcher for a while but really wanted to know how it works and so forth great info I've saved this video so I can watch it again all the best to you and thanks
Living in New York, for some reason I can't get the pepper spray/tear gas version (yet I can buy pepper spray) but I can get the version that shoots the hard balls. That would get the job done I'm sure. According to the site shipping times are 10+ weeks.
Sounds like CA. Where I live you can't shoot any projectile with pepper/chemicals in it. You can only use a pepper spray which means you have to be just feet away from someone to use it effectively. Absolutely rediculous.
People NEED TO BE WEARY of where you CAN and CANNOT use this. ANYTHING that shoots projectiles, WITHOUT A PERMIT, is PROHIBITED--in ALOT of Counties. So KNOW your County ordinance where you live.
Still better than the alternative given the number of people who literally can't pull the trigger on someone. The assailant's no longer a problem and I just have to run (eventually).
@@patrickdoyle2510 I priced it out with options and I'm well over $500.. No thanks! I'll stick to mase and following it up with a "Fast Strike" across the face for $35.
Great video! It shoots around 300 FPS or lower. It’s too bad it can’t be tuned up a bit. But I got it anyways. I’d like to see a fsp pistol comparison with the byrna that would be awesome.
Right you are Truth. I had a niggling feeling when I said 600 that I was wrong, but I plowed ahead anyway, knowing I could count on my viewers to set me straight.
Mike Allensworth I seen a similar comment of someone saying that. And I called byrna and asked them and they said it doesn’t increase fps. That screw in the back is meant for something different I wouldn’t recommend adjusting it. I’m sure someone will find a way to increase it eventually.
You shoot it to get that gas on the ass of the crook. 300 FPS is good enough or you can do what I do. Fire a 12 gauge at 12 feet he’s hurting all over.
The biggest risk of using anything that looks like a handgun for self defense is being countered with a real weapon, and killed, by the assailant or law enforcement.
As the old saying goes, I ain't got a dog in this fight, but I'd point out that putting holes in a paper target doesn't have much bearing on the effectiveness of a non-lethal "weapon". Earlier today (after watching one video) I was about to reach for the debit card, but common sense got the better of me and I decided to do a little more research. I'd recommend anyone considering a purchase to seek out more videos to watch. I've seen a couple in which testing showed the kinetic rounds had no effect on someone wearing more than one layer of clothing and where the pepper balls didn't break open. That's why the manufacturer will show them shooting something solid like plywood. I've also read a LOT of comments regarding poor customer service. Buyer beware.
You don’t buy this so much for home remember in your home you get that gas smell also. But I mean it’s a good defense tool quick and pain for your assailant.
We have regular weapons but we just bought this one and this is amazing. I got to tell you something I was shooting into metal sign. It almost went through
@@SliverOfSilver1000oz i checked out the website the first time this popped in my recommendations. this sounds like a great idea with a lot of potential, but the reviews that dont sound like 5* paid actors, have me concerned. orders taking 6 weeks with no reply. pepper balls arriving late and damaged. everything is proprietary, so you lack the aftermarket support that even a highpoint would get. it cost as much as an actual 9mm from a reputable brand and ammo is $7.00 a shot. for home defense it would be more economical to get a $200 dollar pump action and some rubber buck shot

The responses have never been detailed and complete.
So did you find the portal in the back make an adjustment? Did it work?
Alternate the pellets in the clip for maximum effect. Two pepper pellet and 3 kinetic. Your first two shots should be the pepper(directly to the chest) then use kinetic to the neck or groin area.

Your comment just confirmed to me to get the Umarex instead, Byrna seems to have more projectile variety but id like to rely on something.
@Chad I won't disagree (which is why I own a dozen firearms), but here in Oregon I'm not so sure that I couldn't be 110% justified in a shooting and STILL face charges.

I really like you as a host Ron. Great job. You’re super informative and very clear in your direction and commentary
3:23 you're on the right track big guy, it's a play on the word "Burner" like a gun
Actually, from the Byrna user manual it states this:
"Byrna chemical irritant projectiles cause an immediate burning sensation in the attacker’s eyes and respiratory system (hence the name “bur-nah”) incapacitating an attacker."
Just my opinion but yellow is best... the orange still sort of looks like something someone might do as a custom gun these days.
@@gunner5916 Yeah that's part of why I'd be wary of these. The orange actually did look like a real gun to me at first.

I appreciate your video as a new Byrna owner. It is very easy to understand it's usefulness and range.
How's it going Ron.
Great video!
Very through.
In Michigan we can only get the Kinetic and Pepper rounds,
not the teargas/pepper rounds. But I believe with good shot placement,
it'll get the job done.
I normally carry a firearm, but this is a great alternative
when you can't carry a firearm or just need a second option for self defense.
Not all self defense encounters need a lethal option. Otherwise, law enforcement
wouldn't carry mace or tasers to subdue an aggressor.
Personally, sometimes I carry both.
A pocket firearm and my Byrna HD.
Hopefully we'll never have to use either, except for practice and recreational. Lol.
But it's nice to know that we have options... Just in case.

Good assessment, nw. I would imagine many would-be attackers would assume they'd been hit by a real bullet if shot with a hard plastic Byrna ball. Not a veteran, hardened criminal/thug, but plenty of young wanna-bes.

Well done Thorough and good explanation of the use of the cartridges. I saw another review of this product and they never once mentioned the cartridge and how full it was or wasn’t for, because that obviously makes a difference. Thinking about getting one of these stuff until the more research
Extremely impressive. This was informative, and entertaining.
Thanks for your top-notch video, explaining everything I was wanting to ask about this.
Thank you
Hey homie
so true! first pull will puncture and fire a round.
The manual says you can pierce the cartridge by putting safety on and pulling trigger
You got the coolest dog ever! Looked like he was jumping to catch the pepper balls.
This is a an interesting idea, a non lethal fire arm….
A substitute for a gun where it’s not allowed to be carried…
A gentleman said that in order to have some kind of protection when he couldn’t carry a real gun, so he found an air soft gun that was close to the real thing not only in looks but in performance as well.
DRY POWDER NOT FLUID More solid encapsulations?
Very nice and concise demonstration of using this protection devise!!

It is very cool for non lethal shooting! But approaching things realistically I would want back up ability, such as a fire arm, knife, pepper spray etc... .
Great video Ron. Love the neutral and honest approach.
Almost got his dog there.
This guy is a great American 👍
I just bought one and really enjoy it. Great review!
John Henry good point. Hope the company sees this and makes some type of bright colored version or can figure something like that out to tip off LEOs.
Then again, some creative criminal could always try to paint their guns bright so as to deceive LEOs. Tough issue.
15:05 Love how your buddy jumps in there, LETS GET IT!
I keep mine with the unbroken co2 cartridge in it, 1 oc + tear gas round at the top of the mag and 4 inert shorts after that, make it most useful I'd think
Sounds like a good setup. As long as you hit with that first one.
i would suggest putting in more then one tear gas, for multiple attackers, atleast 2 or 3 total.

What do you mean by this? Just have a cartridge nearby?
If it not loaded an ready as with any hand gun it is useless
Sir, you have the gift of the gab 👍🏽
I just fired 10 rounds for the first time. Now it doesnt work, cant get a hold of customer service
Try a new cylinder.
Bears have much more sensitive sinuses, bear spray is not as rough as human spray so though I wouldn’t want to find out I would imagine it would be effective.
Great review Ron.
I’m curious- anyone know how many rounds each CO2 cartridge will fire?
25 to 30 rounds per co2 cylinder
It's best to alternate the pepper balls with the kinetic rounds in the magazines. Loading the mags with all pepper balls was causing some to break open in the mags.
You need to test the pepper rounds against soft targets. The other tests i've seen show that the pepper rounds don't like to burst.
Good to see Mr Lahey is doing good
Really well done video! You're a pleasure to watch. I'm interested in one of these. I already have a TR50, which I shoot in my basement with rubber balls. I love air guns. Especially when I can carry one with a big bore! Great video. Thanks Ron!
You think the TR50 would make a good non-lethal defense weapon? Seems less expensive than the Byrna.
