I think this is crazy. But knowing how lonely I am but also how much I fear getting into relationships, this seems like the perfect solution for me. I won’t do it because I don’t know how far down the rabbit hole I’ll end up but I know for others who are in the same situation as me, it may not be as easy to turn a blind eye towards it.

I'm genZ (older genZ was born in 2000) and I can't believe this is even a thing. But this as a continuation of the y/n in Wattpad is probable. I personally cannot imagine doing something like that. I skipped all the y/n stories I never want to be a part of a fictional story. But each to their own. 🤷
What is the deal with you younguns and wattpad/fanfic? I'm an old man (Jk lol I'm mid 30s), and I know it's always been a thing but it seemed very niche and secretive when I was growing up when the internet was coming into its thing. Not trying to be condescending or anything by the way! Just super curious why and how it exploded in popularity in the last generation
@@frankcaggiano8282I’m 21 years old, but y/n fanfictions have been out for a long time, I actually read a couple back when I was 14, and I think part of it was that people are able to place themselves in the story.
I know it might not make sense, cause they’ll always have y/n written there, but I’ve met people who literally substitute their name every time they read it. They also start to really get vivid and it makes people feel like they are in that world. For example, the biggest y/n’s that I see people read is normally anime and K-pop. If we think about it, anime is an expansion of a world (a fantasy), so people like to imagine they’re there because they want to be apart of this fanatical world. If you are familiar with gaming, it’s kinda like those people being invested in a game to the point where they see themselves in it. It’s an obsession kinda thing. Same with kpop, because even though it’s real people, the concept is that they are untouchable (idols), so people feel that fan fictions like these will allow them to experience almost what it’s like to be with their idols (especially if it’s scenario type pieces - like holding hands, or going on a date.)
It’s a really scary concept when you think about it, cause it fuels people into an obsession or feeling like they are apart of that world. A lot of people become so consumed by the idea that they are “with” these idols or know these anime characters so much, that they truly believe that they are special. It’s why this user is comparing the ai to y/n, because the whole concept of a bot specializing how it speaks to fit how you feel or want it to (filling a desire), makes you feel special. Which is what y/n fanfictions try to do.

With y/n fanfictions or just fanfictions in general, the premise of it is that you can read the fanfictions and replace your name instead of y/n. I know it’s kinda weird, but even though it may read y/n, I’ve met people who actually replace it.
Y/n fanfictions mainly became popular due to the communities who use them (anime and K-pop). With anime, people will write these stories to make you almost appear alongside your character. If you think about it, it’s like a game, since it’s so vivid that people can also become obsessed with wanting to be in their video game. For kpop idols, it’s almost always scenario type, meaning that people try to visualize themselves with their idol (normally in a romantic way by holding hands, dates or even other ways).
The scariest part of all this is that it fuels obsession. People feel they are so apart of that world, that it makes them feel almost special. Like “I know my character or kpop idol better than you do”. The reason this commenter compared the AI to the y/n fanfictions is because not only do they make characters sound this way in the writing, but the concept that there is a bot that changes how it speaks to you to fit your deepest desires, makes people feel special. Which is what a y/n fanfic does.
@@frankcaggiano8282 It's the availability, I think🤷. When I was a teen Wattpad had become just the thing. The stories I read in the beginning weren't even fanfiction (and some are now even books). It's just like you said it was a niche. And hardcore fans had to exchange their fanfictions on conventions. Now there are Billions of fanfictions on several websites and you don't even have to search that hard to find some so it's easier and you don't have to go to conventions. And for a teen with no money who wanted to read and didn't really had a library (small town in Germany and our schools don't have librarys) so we read fanfictions and stories on Wattpad and others. And most fanfiction writers I know are in their late 20s/ mid 30s so this isn't even a genZ thing with fanfic on the internet. Fanficon became a thing in the 60s/70s with Star Trek (Spock/Kirk)🖖. There is actually a very interesting video about it but it's unfortunately in German.
@frankcaggiano8282 There is nothing wrong with y/n stories. It's just a way for the reader to insert themselves into a story; it'd rather harmless. Im a fanfic writer, and it's not a younger generation thing. A big part of the fanfiction community are adults 40+
Fanfics aren't the cringe stuff people make it out to ben and popular writers you may know of are active participants in the community. Wattpad is like...baby's first steps in dark fantasy and fanfics.

I mostly use AI bots with voices to help me write fictional stories about my favourite characters from books. I was never good at putting my ideas into words, and it helps me while also writing things I would never think of

I haven’t approached women in 2 years. If AI boyfriends/Girlfriends are rising fuck it. People are quietly quitting dating because of how bad my generation is at it. You can only get rejected, cheated on and destroyed so much until you hit a limit of pain to where you’re sick of it. I will never use AI for a girlfriend but I also don’t care to have a human girlfriend either cuz both are now just as harmful as the other. So why bother when you can build money, hobbies, career success and a peaceful and happy life for yourself. I quit dating 3 years ago and this is the best my life has ever been than when I was dating.
