No indonesian will be offended when a foreigner dress up with our traditional clothes or learn our dance. We think of it as cultural appreciation. We are happy
They will love u more than their own kid
Being offended on behalf of another culture is closer to cultural appropriation than learning about and celebrating that culture is.
yea I'm indonesian, I can tell that we just laugh it off if she looks bad when wearing or doing our culture, but we'll praise her if she did good. we appreciate the 'bule' that enjoying our culture unless they disrespect it. if they're dumb we just call them 'bule gila' bule=mean albino/ foreigner in general term. gila= crazy/coocoo
They will be offended if a Malaysian did this. 🤣🤣
@@parisan9985 cause most likely malaysian would claim that its their culture
I'm Indonesian. She kills it! I don't understand you USA. Honestly! The face she's making is exactly what's expected from Balinese traditional dance
As I was watching the video, I thought her expression was a bit strange and she should smile. But I finished watching the video and thought ahh ok. I also thought she is going to look really cool when she has the make up on.
I'm in the USA and I don't understand us either sometimes. Our culture has gotten to the point that some people make a hobby out of being offended, outraged and pretty much hateful about everything. And you're right, the kid is killing it. I love Balinese dancing!
It’s hard to explain this to people who don’t understand our sense of humor. I’m not Indonesian but Thai. Seeing other people learning our arts and culture. Put on our traditional dress makes us feeling more proud.
I'm I S they don't speak for all of us. I'm on your side
@@dianeduchesne1783 She should smile? Are you american by any chance? :)
As Indonesian, I find it flattering. You see, even she’s only half Indonesian, she’s still willing to learn the tradition, and not all Indonesians do that.
Yes and the ones calling her out need to understand that you are not just one race. If people took DNA tests they would find out they are more than one race. Hell, the most racist white man alive found out that he has African American in his blood. Wonder what its like to hate themselves. 🤭
She's keeping Indonesian traditions alive. That's cultural appreciation. Not appropriation. Appropriation strips all meaning of the culture out of it. Appreciation keeps it alive.
Thanks to the bigots that hate this girl I have learned about a new style of dance and I have since become absorbed in learning more about this fascinating dance! It’s awesome!!!
Yea you know, this is probably written by people who did so after a yoga session and a pizza, while wearing a bandana
Balinese here. I am PROUD of her
She actually practice the dance perfectly, it is a part of her now. She is a balinese.
I've been often to Bali and I do really love it (also I wouldn't dance)
So by their logic all non European people should be banned from ballet ??
And McDonald's
They will say that all non European already are banned... or at least used to be banned. It is only recently that non white performers became a thing in the ballet world. What they fail to realise (or admit) is their insistance that white people can't participate in other people's culture is EXACTLY the thing they complain was done to them when they weren't allowed in ballet. But you know, they don't want a world of equality and fairness. They want revenge.
Yea, and only people from Croatia may wear a tie or butterfly, only people from England may play soccer, and so on.
Or playing Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, and Vivaldi.
And from Opera, from Musicals, from the Western tv and movie industries, from the Western gaming industry, from Western theater etc. They've no issue when European culture is being appropriated by "minorities". Look at what has happened in Hollywood these recent years for the sake of "inclusion" which is another term for removing white people from their own cultural properties.
Notice that the people of the culture don't really care. I find it flattering when other races take interest in Native American culture.
Which native american culture is that? Balinese dance?
but that was not natrive american lmao
Yup, it’s a made up issue by American liberals with nothing better to do. I’m from Cuba raised in the United States since I was seven I can tell you most cultures love when people participate it’s a show of respect. I went to Japan and you could rent a kimono I saw a few tourists wearing them. Not one person had an issue with it. I’ve noticed that people that complain the most have no real culture. They are too detached.
At least with Native American cultures, I've noticed here in Oklahoma a lot of people who look white are also Native American. Assuming something is appropriated could be actually accusing people of participating in their own culture lol. Looks are deceiving. The nations here are also happy to teach about their traditions.
@@littlebigkicker I think that person who commented is Native American and made that comment on that basis. She was definitely not saying that was a Native American dance as far as I could tell.
Culture is culture! I'm Finnish Australian & my step mum is Chinese Australian, my little sister is all & there is absolutely nothing wrong with sharing our cultures together! Coz it's kinda real awesome to the best parts of each culture & share it as a family!😡😡😡😡😡😡
I am a black woman who wore saalwar kamez outfits sometimes. I had an Indian boyfriend at the time. Some people complimented me when I wore them and some stared. I didn't care because I was doing me and I felt really beautiful in those clothes. An Indian woman came to the shop where I worked and asked me where I was from. I told here in Maryland. She proceeded to ask me in a not so nice way "why are you wearing Indian clothes."? I looked her straight in her eyes and asked her "why are you wearing western clothes"? She had nothing more to say.. Keep dancing what ever kind of dance you want. Living your life, Be happy!
It is interesting when the act of not answering a question ends up so loudly saying what words did not.
Ironic how the people calling everything racist are themselves the most racist.
And those whose only future is ghetto.
@1234_Flux
And 💯
Yes, it's merely their hatred showing, nothing more.
What do you expect when they've been taught Critical Race Theory since they were children? It's a derivative of Critical Theory which sharply splits everyone into either oppressors or oppressed. This one places white people as the oppressors no matter what. They say existing they are contributing to an oppressive symptom of whiteness like original sin. Anyone who denies being/acting racist means they are still a part of it.
In grad school I saw that literally said out loud in a panel that was like a Chinese Communist struggle session.
Nah. They DON'T know. That's why they call others racist while being racist themselves while not realizing it.
"Stealing culture" used t be called "celebrating culture".
fer real. so sad.
How does one even steal a culture? Set up a giant military force in the native land of the culture, using threat of violence/imprisonment to outlaw any and all expressions of said culture and then copying everything from it in one's own land, in place of the original culture? That's the only way I can think of.
Disagree. The whole "appropriation" thing came about because people DID take from other's cultures without crediting, a hold over from actual colonizing attitudes. Look at how black/ African American influence in music was handled as recently as Michael Jackson and you'll see corruption was very much alive.
The issue is in the 2010s all the college kids HAD to prove how sensitive and anti-racist they were because Obama was president. That's when we saw the rise of "My culture is not a costume" and stereotypes being pulled (Speedy Gonzales, Apu). Just like body positivity, the cultural appropriation movement started out with a smart and solid message... until woke imbeciles bastardized it into the most basic and racist components.
@@UndomaranelNo, it's just basic insecurity. Do you think Europeans give AF about the millions of people around the world enjoying their cultural exports.
Appropriation is appreciation
I'm extremely white, 1st generation Australian out of the UK. My husband's father is also very white, but his mum is an Australian first nations elder. My husband is white passing, but our boys, those boys are practically translucent. One snowy blonde, one a redhead, both with blue eyes and porcelain skin. But they do have a grandmother who is an elder, and they do get showered in gifts depicting 1st nations art and language. The looks I get having these boys enjoying their cultural heritage is wild. I do in fact find myself minimising it to make life easier, and that's really sad, because it is their heritage, and they should absolutely be able to experience it without judgement but here we are.
Omg! This is so stupid. I used to have an oriental dance teacher who was black, a tango teacher who was white, a 17th C French dance teacher who was Italia, etc… so what????
ikr! it's like going to an italian restaurant and learning the chef isn't italian... implying people cannot master cuisine that isn't from their birth country??
Sometimes people baffle me, let others enjoy their lives dammit
Probably because tango comes from Argentina and Uruguay and both countries have a predominantly white population...just saying.
@@threeguineasx1391 oh no 😥 that must change everything I said …
Shame on them. Not only cultural appropriation, but even temporal appropriation? 😦How dare a person from the 21st century give 17th century dance classes? 😖
Tango was invented by Italian emigrants in Argentina. Why on earth shouldn't they be "white"? Not that I care much, as an Italian, whether I'm classified as "white" or "dark white" " light brown" or anything else.
she's been living in Bali, she speaks Indonesian she went to school there.. and as Indonesian we are gladly accept her for respecting our culture..
Is she grew up there and that’s all she knows, then yeah she’l adopt or assimilate into the local culture.
Yeah! I think all of us in the region share the same feelings, we are happy about people learning and participating. Culture is to be shared and appreciated.

Thank you.
If she was not white, then it would not matter.
I'm learning Chinese as a black person and my "friends" were not supportive and calling me racist for learning a new language. A lady a shop she's Chinese and she was happy that I was learning her language and culture. It's seriously wrong how people assume that people are racist when they're learning or trying out a different culture
That's the opposite of racist surley
Not much of a "friend."
Your friends don’t know the difference between cultural appropriation and learning about other cultures.
@YourWonderXianyun
Don't you worry about that. I think it's awesome that you want to learn something new and embrace other cultures and languages!!! 😊👍🏾♥️
I mean what do you call it when someone is blatantly trying to stay uneducated and then making fun of people who do educate themselves?
And yet all those people wearing Palestinian scarf what a load of hypocrites
It’s so nice to see someone push back on the haters. I’m so glad the algorithm sent you to me. I will never understand why these people are getting offended on behalf of another culture. Besides if people took more time to understand anything outside their bigoted bubbles they might see the beauty there. We definitely need more coming together than separation.
People who get offended in this way are timid souls who see a chance to elevate themselves by criticizing others. Makes them feel powerful.
According to this logic, Japanese women are not allowed to dance ballet and Kenyan women are not allowed to dance tango.
Or people outside the USA wouldn't be allowed to use an iPhone because it was developed there.
hell, japenese ballet dancers are probably the most graceful dancers on the planet too
Cultural appropriation can only be committed by a dominating / oppressing culture - for example the culture of former colonialist European occupiers in America or Africa who committed "cultural appropriation" by exporting and selling (=exploiting) indigenous practices (and wealth) like dances, craftwork or clothing to their own advantage. They were and still are making money with it - and the original culture does not profit. This is the concept of cultural appropriation.
@@moinmoin4485 which sounds alright on paper, but as we see, used often than not maliciously by people who don't understand the nonsense they're spewing. This is part of the inherent issue with dividing everyone into oppressed, oppressor, and various shades in between. Sounds great on an academic research paper in the humanities or social sciences, but try and make a real world framework out of it and you only cause further societal strife and segregation through entrenched identity politics which only contribute to further intensify the ongoing culture wars.

It’s like me as an Indian saying that middle eastern dishes are Indian dishes because both are brown people.
Also, funny how you say that but when we wanna associate colonialism with Europeans you guys sulk a lot.
Those people do not know what the word culture means to the point that I'm surprised they can even pronounce it
I even saw a video about British fashion throughout the decades. Which of course begs the question: if these bullies see a Chinese like me running around in Victorian-era attire or punk getup, would they accuse me of cultural appropriation?

How about calling it cultural appreciation? Because that's what it is. It's flattering.
but then it would be positive and nothing these people can whining about..
As long as it's not plagiarism. Give due credit and be respectful.
It used to be looked upon as a positive thing . Learning and adopting the best each had to offer
There's appreciation where the person is engaged in actually trying to get an understanding. Then there's mockery. Then there's ripping someone off in a shallow way. It would be worse if someone wore a culture's religious garments and, i don't know, recorded a music video.
I grew up in Asia and a lot of my white classmates had spent as much time in Thailand or India or wherever as they had the west. They often spoke their local language. I think it made sense that some of them might have a cultural input of 50% western and 50% non-western. It seems harsh to presume malice and then rain fire and brimstone on some girl.

Then tell your Sis, that the harmonica should be taken away from the black Blues harp players. It is a pure German invention, was (and is) mass produced in Germany since much more than 100 years and mass-exported to the USA. The black folks picked them up because they were cheap and easy to carry and developed even their own technics. Can you imagine - the took OUR instrument and then plaid THEIR OWN style? How dare they?
I am a white German engineer but also an electric blues harp player. I lived in Asia (!!) for ten years where I plaid in clubs all over the continent with my fellow excellent Asian musicians.
Asians and European playing the Blues? Even getting paid for it? What the heck, for sure! And we plaid the Blues everywhere and local crowds were graving for it, dancing and singing and drinking till dawn...
There are so many excellent Jazz venues there too, including absolutely top local and expat players, unbelievable. Like classic music, Asia is totally into it. Jazz is in taxis all over Taiwan and in India Blues Festivals are currently springing up everywhere.
Get used to it, the USA is not a woke island....

@@ms.zelman3032 As a Black girl, she won't put your traditional dancers out of work. What happens in America is that our musicians, and singers(creators)are copied. I would think it's because the Irish don't face discrimination for being Irish (as far as I know). Usually, what makes cultural appropriation what it is is that people who don't experience discrimination use a certain part of another culture for their benefit even when the people of said culture face discrimination for exactly those aspects. That's how I've understood the concept, at least
Edit: Some kind people have pointed out to me that I was utterly uneducated and the Irish did, in fact, go through decades or discrimination. I apologize for not having googled that in advance of commenting. I have since read up on Irish history and have educated myself. Everyone new to the conversation, I'd appreciate it if you stopped yelling at me. Thank you.
OH! This... have seen this so much in Japan too. Some Americans get upset when white people wear traditional Japanese kimono (like I remember this one little girl that wore kimono, and the internet tore her to shreds), but then when Americans visit Japan and want to wear Kimono too, and suddenly it's all "WOW, she ATE that", "stunning", "POC represent", "slay girl, so beautiful"...sigh.... and the word "cultural appropriation" they had been throwing around minutes before is lost from their vocabulary haha. Japan is also a great example, because Japanese people love sharing their culture and seeing foreigners in Kimono. None of my friends or anyone I've met here has had a problem with it.
You make so many amazing points in this video...Thank you...I believe in Sharing too. I love kind people who do not judge others for silly things.
OMGOODNESS! Thank you. I love you and how you approached this subject! You are awesome.
My blonde daughter took Hawaiian dance in college. Nobody, including the Hawaiian teacher, had a problem with it. Screw the people who have problems with this.
Its cultural appreciation, not appropriation.
I can't count the number of blond, red (etc) heads dancing pro latin dances, and I don't care either, because these people dance these way better that I'll ever do. If I'm guilty of something, it's to be jealous of their talent, elegance and goddess'like shapes.😅
My mother taught Polynesian dances to include Hawai'ian, Samoan, Tahitian, Maori (New Zealand), etc. Never questioned anyone on where they were from before they were allowed to take classes from her. Always happy to share the culture. I actually find it quite annoying when people criticize other's learning our dance and our ways. This is how I see it..... They are calling people out for "cultural appropriation" and telling them to stop when we are actively trying to share our culture and keep it alive. If someone were to come up to me and tell me they stopped some white girl from dancing and learning Hula to help preserve my culture I would tell them they are not helping preserve my culture at all by doing that, they are helping to erase it. There is a difference between mocking a culture and appreciating it and I would argue that the people criticizing this girl in this video for actually doing it right are the ones that are actually insulting the culture...
Americans only see things through an American lens. Give grace. Not every situation is appropriation.

People who accuse others of cultural appropriation tend to have a very poor understanding of how culture works.
And a personal culture no one wants to appreciate.
And how human psychology works. Learning about and participating in each other's culture is how different societies have build bridges across cultural differences and become allied all throughout history. It's almost as though the types of people spreading this "cultural appropriation"-nonsense WANT cultures and races to be completely segregated and resenting each other... Sigh...

Culture appropriation is an American thing. I as a European don’t understand how the opinion that cultures should be separated is not seen as a racist opinion. The exact same opinions were used to justify racial segregation.
On twitter most black Americans think white Americans shouldn't be rappers because rap music is black American culture

Their obsessive gatekeeping really puts the "cult" in "culture."

perfect!
Damn, that deserves an applause, perfect!
In fact, all cultures are cults (in a way). People behave in certain ways because their cult(ure) has taught them to do so. It starts to become scary when a cult tells you to shun others who don't believe as you do or mass self deletion...
Excessive gatekeeping undermines itself due to its obsessive nature.

Im a 40 yo white woman... From Australia and when I was in primary school, once a year the school would celebrate "international Day" where students who had drawn a country from a hat would come to school dressed up in traditional clothing from the country, give a presentation to the class on what they learned about the country and would bring in a dish from the country and we would all have a big lunch together where everyone could share the international food they bought and learn and celebrate true diversity and culture. It was the best! No one was offended and it was a very multicultural school! It brought everyone together!
That's so fun!! In America, I had this only one year, but it was such a great time 😁
Ooohhh this is so cool !
My history teacher in Jr. High (boy, that dates me ... middle school in the US these days) had the whole school do a celebration of where we came from as immigrants ... I got Lithuania. We celebrated the diverse backgrounds and it was fun to learn about everything ... and we weren't even multicultural 'cause it was a looooong time ago. Thank you for bringing back this memory.
Yes my class did that in primary school too, and over 35 years later I still remember all the interesting things I learned about other cultures.

Oh the HUBRIS. Imagine calling that cultural appropriation but being OK with painting blackface on Ariel, Astrid, Cleopatra, Anne Boleyn, and Queen Charlotte.

Lol, yeah, this is cultural appropriation, but making a Danish, red haired, extremely pale skinned character black is okay.
It's cute how you think you contributed something.. hate to break it to you stealing German folklore to make it blackface is also stealing culture. And if people stole a black character from history and changed it to any other race they would be an issue.. hypocrites going to hypocrite@@garuelx8627
Imagine that...
Another example: literally wearing the hair of impoverished Indian and South-East Asian women on their (not Indian or SE Asian) head in the form of wigs/weaves, but then viciously attacking white women for having the "audacity" to braid the hair that grows out of their own heads in a certain style.
Brava! Well said Amala! People these days are so ready to judge others because they perceive them to be one thing or another by the color of their skin or garments they wear. I applaud when someone of a different culture is willing to respectfully participate in another culture's tradition. To share the joy of something that has been shared from generation to generation. How else can we grow to respect the people and history it comes from. How else can we appreciate cultures other than our own or what is assumed to be "our own" or the people from which it comes if we are not willing to learn from and of other cultures The same with other faiths, other foods, other music. Thank you for sharing this!
Wonderfully said!
It’s so stupid. She’s clearly worked hard to be as good as she is and it’s cultural appreciation! 🤦🏼♀️
Such a beautiful term, cultural appreciation. I'll start using it in debates with idiots.
You can't even admire another culture, which is something honorable
The "discussion" was "evolved" from accussing the girl did cultural appropriation into straightly mocking the dance itself. The guy only want to insult not virtue signaling. And as you know us Indonesian especially the Balinese don't like his attitude.
It also looks like a difficult dance, one of those where every movement is carefully crafted. If she were mocking it sure but she obviously is treating it with care and respect
It’s as stupid as saying people of colour and other ethnic backgrounds aren’t allowed to learn ballet without committing cultural appropriation 🤌
They'll make some excuse for why it's okay for them. It's only not okay if you're white practicing another culture. But it's okay if you're a different culture- they can do what you want. Their reason is because white people have a history of oppressing other cultures, so now we can't appreciate the cultures we used to oppress.
Exactly haha. And people are out there complaining that ballet shoes don't match darker skin tones, and are literally asking for attire to be changed to suit darker skin ( yes great, good to diversify), but this girl is just dancing, not even saying like "ah can we change this, I don't like that" and people are losing their minds... over the fact that she's simply dancing. lmao... why can't we all share and enjoy each others culture? It does call for some change sometimes, like the ballet shoes, but if that is OK, why not this girl just dancing???
@@SkyeAten Precious Adam is a black woman doing ballet and she has darker thighs and darker point shoes. So maybe they just don't look at the right place?

I’m Thai, and an admirers of Balinese traditional dance, and as a fellow Southeast Asian it moves my heart when foreigners appreciate our classical culture. It took so much fortitude and dedication to preserve what we have left. Thank you.
A Balinese here and I am gonna give my 2 cent: I was baffled by comments Daisy received, why and how people are so hard on her? And without even knowing how our dance is performed. In fact its like a slap on my wrist seeing her dance so perfectly with perfect expression, while I was born in Bali, live in here my whole life and I can't even dance Balinese dance let alone that perfect. It's no secret that our cultures have been diminished with lack of interest by the Balinese youngster due to modernization, so we appreciate other people willing to learn and appreciate our culture. It's just sad seeing the hates that she received, maybe it's just like the saying of ours: the commentators always seems smarter than the players they are commenting on.
I agree...I started studying baris and topeng 30 years ago. Interest was diminishing then...I danced in Bali and Australia and it was always white people who criticized...people have no idea how much she studied and probably paid...the fact that she is interested to know more of the culture should be praised for this is what we need in the world - young people curious to learn more....often times I have experienced inspiring an Indonesian student yo go and study dance - the idea bring.. "how come this person values my culture more?"....young people in Indonesia like all over the world are influenced by so many different cultures...here in jakarta its Korea..and young people have all kinds of hopes and dreams - not all kids in Indonesia are going to study dance...Betawi dance is diminishing faster than Balinese dance which is still connected to the religion (& also having a bit of a push from tourism)...I also think it would be sad for Bali if tourists only came for the parties and not the culture...the world is crazy and pushing us too only view subjectively and exotically as outsiders, rather than get to know the culture in a deeper way through practice, through relationships between teacher & student & with other dancers .
Because in Western societies being a moron is in fashion in recent days. These people can't be bothered to learn a single language from any culture they "value and protect" so highly and on top of that they try to prevent others from learning and appreciating these cultures by calling "cultural appropriation" whenever someone is actually willing to learn something (dance, language, cooking, history) instead of being fixated on preconceptions.
Thank you for such a great comment.
Taoi dia anak blasteran… so it is her culture too.
Interesting observation. So by people crying "cultural appropriation" at things like this risks reducing the sharing of cultures until that culture becomes diminished and forgotten in the modern world.
Btw, great video! Very important nowadays.

And instead of jumping to conclusions based on a few seconds of something, people could be CURIOUS, at the very least.
As a professional dancer, this is not ever viewed as “cultural appropriation” within the dance community. We all, white, black or brown, learn MANY different styles and cultures of dance. I took a class at university all about it where we did German dances, West African, Filipino, and more. We learned about the culture and appreciated, not appropriated, what they brought to the dance world. So this for real just needs to stop. Just let people live and do what they love, my god!!!!
Only german nativ speakers should sing Wagner? That's all crazy!
I’d love all these haters to sink their teeth into the Asian prodigies of the classical music world. I doubt Chloe Chua gets the same hate as the girl doing Indonesian dance. Maybe they should though….. if only to finally hear Paganiniana.
You left out yellow. I'm offended now😀
No such thing as cultural appropriation! Culture is shared not owned.
You are absolutely correct.
Boy are you wrong. But i get it. People of your coloring have no culture.
The only example of actual bad cultural appropriation I can think of is when cultural objects (like boomerangs, feather crowns, artwork, traditional clothing etc) are copied, cheaply mass produced and sold without it benefitting the (possibly struggling) people from that culture.
You are right...cultures have always inter-mingled and exchanged throughout time.
Untrue. Racists don't appreciate the culture of the people they oppress and criminalize. They think they own it *cough* "share it" when it's time to exploit it.
In this scenario, this girl is Balinese as she is a direct descendant of the culture(and lives there) via her mother being Balinese. She's definitely expressing her cultural pride and interests. I agree this is folly to call this cultural appropriation
Hey, I cannot thank you enough for making this video - honestly, this is really helpful, especially with all the comments from people around the world under it. Here in Germany, I read news and ppl complaining about cultural appropriation quite often these days. It is always very encouraging to read what actual ppl from other cultures (like in the comments) think about cases like this and this really helps to stay open and interested in other cultures and to not stop being curious about different traditions. ❤
My mom was a dancer. She was white. The dances she liked the most were Hawaiian and Mexican folk dances. My father was Mexican and he danced with her.
Some years ago I was in Hawaii with my family and there was a hula competition. The boys competition had a big group dancing. All all native Hawaiian except for one, very blond kid. He was amazing! They all were, it was just hard not to focus on him because he stood out. He was obviously very proudly Hawaiian.
I practice martial arts, mainly Japanese and Chinese. Will I now be considered as appropriating a culture because I love martial arts so much?
I'm sure countless cultures have been lost because they were not shared.
Your post was fantastic.
People are really working overtime to find something to be offended by.
And it's always people being offended FOR OTHER people. It's never someone from the actual culture that's offended (with the exception of one culture).
