100% a perfectly normal human interaction between the mom and the other customer….
The cashier should not have interfered in things that have nothing to do with her, making it about “fat phobia”…
And The Son shouldn’t gone into it being about race…
Had those two just minded their own business - nothing would have occurred in the first place…
The mom got her answer about the coffee cake she was interested in, the other customer left happy with his cake… it was just a normal human interaction that has occurred billions of time throughout history….. but because of social media making everyone unsociable….. it turned into a complete saga for no real reason other than people liking to feel offended all the time.

Let me share a lovely story regarding an older Asian lady in my neighborhood. More than thirty years ago, we bought the worst looking house in a great neighborhood. It was on a corner lot, so every passerby could see the progress we were making on renovating not only the house, but also the horribly neglected yard. We had two young children, ages 4 and 5, so it took a lot of energy to not only work on the property, but also take care of the kids and spend quality time with them. One day just blended into the next, as there was so much work to do, and so little money to spend. After 18 months of non-ending yard work, I was very lonely, I was losing hope, and becoming depressed. One sunny afternoon, a car stops at the curb. An older Asian lady got out, with something in her hands, and began complimenting me on all the dedicated work, and how the yard was turning into a “happy place” that brightened her days. She had brought me a cake as thanks for brightening her day! Now, this was not just any cake…..It came from a bakery that I couldn’t possibly have afforded. I told her I couldn’t accept such a generous gift, but she insisted, because my hard word had provided her with year-round changing colors (flowers, blossoming trees, roses, and fall colors) that she’d not seen since leaving her native country, Japan, as a young woman. I hadn’t realized my efforts had such an impact upon anyone. This singular act, from a complete stranger, immediately lifted my day (I began crying, and she wiped my tears). To this day, I don’t know her name. She’s probably dead by now. That was the most delicious chantilly cake I’d ever tasted, probably because of the selfless, and generous, act of a complete stranger.

When I met my Thai wife many years ago I was in good shape , but her cooking ( and her moms cooking) had other plans . After I was married I put on a " few" pounds
On my second trip to Thailand to see my in-laws again , upon entering the family homestead gate we met my wifes cousin .
I said " Sa wa dee krup " ( hello ) and she said in her broken English " You FAT " .
      Omg ! Haha
Was she trying to tell me something ?
A few days later my elderly step mom had borrowed a ladder and was going to clean out the gutters on her 2 story house.
      " NO NO.. " I said
" I will do that" and proceeded to go up the old bamboo ladder , all the while my mother in-law apparently protesting in her thai language , which i didnt understand.
I got about 7/8 th of the way up the 16 foot ladder when i heard a crackling sound .
It was like a cartoon from that point on as I attempted to quickly descend the failing ladder . At about the 8 foot mark the ladder became 2 ladders ,( broke in the middle ) sending me crashing to the ground in front of my thai father in law and thus earning my Thai nik name " BOOM" ( most people in Thailand go by a nik name )
Ok... message received. Maybe i need to lose a few pounds .. but wait.... What's that ?

In places other than the U.S, portion sizes are vastly different. We (the U.S) have above-average portion sizes of all types of food here, and for someone who likely lived in another culture, for someone to see such a thing would likely beg such a question.
The assumption that she gave of "buying it for your family" is an indicator that she wasn't intemtionally criticizing the man's weight, she was trying to rationalize why one person would purchase such an item.

I live in a Korean community and I can see how this was a misunderstanding. Older Korean women ask extremely personal questions all the time with complete strangers. They usual y don't give strangers their option or tell strangers what they should do, but they will judge harshly about the stranger with a group of women later of the day. It's more of a cultural misunderstanding because there is a difference of what is appropriate to say in public and what is okay to ask when meeting new people. At first it was a curve ball for me when I was experiencing it myself. I wouldn't even answer the questions because it was so shocking how someone could ask something like that out loud in public. They would ask, "How much money do you make?, Are your parent's proud of you? Why are you still childless?, Is that your husband's money?" They would step back to look up and down on you while making a weird noise, which feels like they're sizing you up. A random elderly korean woman would go through my cart of grocerys (opening the bags and move stuff around) and then ask me if if can cook. Now, I expect that will happen every time I visit Hmart. The bluntness causes them to appear rude. It took me a while to learn that this behavior is normal.
