  • This video shows a DCD985 Dewalt XR 18v / 20v combi drill that is not working. I opened it and on inspection of the drill I found the brushes to be defective. This is a full tutorial showing how to change brushes with full description of the fault followed by how to dismantle and the description of parts involved.The DCD985 is the older model 3 speed Combi Drill it has the old brushed motor which is now outdated technology in contrast to the DCD996 which is one of the newer brushed motor versions.Can you fix a DCD985 Dewalt combi drill? why is my Dewalt drill not working? Hopefully this video will answer these questions and more.

    Great fix vid! had the exact same issue but was able to loosen the stuck brush. notes: Torx driver T10 is good for all the bolts. the motor stator sits a little bit off angle within the housing (it's subtle but if seated wrong, it's very difficult to button everything back up). Cheers!

    It is amazing how many of different symptoms end up being bad brushes, sometimes even motor whine ends up being dirty commutator and used up brushes.
    commutator can be cleaned nicely with fine grit sandpaper or steel woll.
    Also, i highly recommend getting an aliexpress "Dental Probe Hook", you can get that for super cheap. These picks are really amazing when it gets to manipulating and removing brush holder springs in tight spaces with no damage to get brushes out of place and so making it much easier to disassemble and reassemble some motors - Brush springs can damage brushes when assembling the motor back together, this is a much bigger problem in brushed angle grinders ( looking at you, Metabo! ) where your brush holder is inside the machine with only side access but you need to push in the motor armature without good access or clear way to move brushes out of the way.
    At least these old tools are easily fixed even tho dewalt wants a "new x20v lidl drill" money for their tool brush sets. It is possible instead to buy generic brushes and solder them existing onto brush holder.

    I'm currently fixing a brushless DCD796 and these BLDC tools are much bigger pain in the ass to fix. mine has a burnt 100 ohm resistor and diode in input voltage part. I ordered parts and now i wait.

    followed your instructions and found the motor where the brushes make contact has a copper plate ripped off, ordered a new one for $22 on ebay, hopefully she runs again

    always clean the armature contacts when installing new brushes. It will reduce sparks and brush wears.

    Thank you for a very helpful video. Did the light come on when pressing the trigger before you replaced the brushes?

    Great video, thanks. If you want to replace don't the chuck do we need to take the drill apart?

      I never take the drill apart to replace the chuck I saw it of with the grinder if it's too tight

    Hi. Why is mine turning the opposite way when i reverse or the other way.. and the reverse is a little slower than the other.

    • @doctorlefthandthread
      @doctorlefthandthread  2 місяці тому

      They should be the same speed both ways if forward and reverse are mixed up swap the black and red wires on the switch check the brushes are making good contact and the spring pushing the brushes down is in place for the speed issue
