- These 3 speed dewalt drills are designed a little differently.
Instead of having a plastic gear housing, the locking gear are contained on a gear train. With a external metal locking gear.
This system is normaly quite robust and trouble free.
But here the locking ring has worn out and the teeth are no longer engaging.
Replacing the locking gear ring solves the problem. It's actulay quite a quick and easy repair.
The part number is N375867, and is even available on amazon. link

Dean Doherty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Crackin good Mate! 👍
Great video and you’re correct: often a fault is just one part. 👍
I've got the old NiCd version, that and an angle grinder, still going strong, this may help in the future as i hate throwing out good tools, thanks for your videos👍
I just picked up a dead DCD996 cheap and I am hoping its a simple fix. I've already done a 12v Dewalt which just needed a new housing and a bit of a clean. These repairs are very satisfying!
Would love to team up with you to do tear downs and engineering build overview videos!
The need for repairable well built tools now in this throw away world… fell in love with your content. Thank you.
Thanks for the video
Thank you for this
I’d say, as crazy as it sounds, maybe the guy using was switching gears while it was literally running, could kinda get stuck in between gears but not really a high probability with this specific build and model, great fixin
I took mine apart and it had a good amount of old grease. I wiped alot of it out. I put enough new grease back to cover all gears.
I guess this happens when you leave the selector in between 1 and 2, I've seen some of my colleagues do this and not even realize, it makes a terrible sound when it's stuck in between gears. Am I right?
Hi Dean,
Really appreciate your video, quick question for you:
I have the same drill after I opened it dropped off 5 bearing beads, do you know where they are original installed ?
Thanks,
Jason

That cable goes down the gears how it make the system to locked when its stop?
Same problem in my ingco cordless drill 12v how to salve it
Hello any idea why my chuck knob became stiff when I try to tighten it ?
Thank you very much, very detailed! Can you tell me which of those parts is responsible for the hammer function? Dewalt wants me to pay $99.00 plus shipping to fix mine.....you know....the one that was sold to me 14 months ago with "lifetime" warranty.
DeWalt does not carry a lifetime warranty. Maybe a kid at Lowes told you that.
I suspect it was ran for a long time in-between gears
I've the same DCD996 the chucks gone so bought a new chuck but when I was trying to get it out she keeps slipping Im assuming it's the gearbox gone now, could be something further back. Am I best chance fixing it, sending it off to get fixed or just getting a new one? It's 3 years old now and don't want to get too deep into it if it's not going to be right
Mate, I've got a Makita drill that's been used for over eight years and a wee DeWalt impact driver that's been going for about six, you're probably having the same issue as here, parts wear out.
What brand do you suggest for an impact wrench
Dewalt has the most power
The tool does not look like it has had many hot suppers, has to be abuse in some way for that amount of wear on one part?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Quite the bit of engineering going on in there. It's as if that gear selector ring was made to be JUST strong enough
How much would cost and is it cost effective
