The thing is, when people say x type of music isn't being made or all music is crap these days etc. (as I often do), we're talking about the mainstream. Such a great live version! Dire Straits are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Brothers In Arms", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "So Far Away" etc. They don't have a bad song.
The fans got their money's worth this night. An outstanding performance. This live version is excellent. The tempo is ramped up over the original version, and the lyrics, in places, have been added to, but it is so great. The drummer was a little hyped up because apparently his father was in the audience, for the first time. Ocassionally, you can see Mark, the lead guitarist in the red jacket, look over at the drummer and smile. Such a fantastic performance.
Mark created the best guitar riff ever heard in rock' n roll in this song.........and he's finger picking like a banjo player, unbelievable performance.
Welcome to the world of Mark Knopfler. One of the most iconic guitar playing styles for decades. He has perfected a unique style of finger-plucking. He doesn't use a pick. He once explained, “I was doing things with my fingers that I couldn't do with a pick”.

First time to your channel. Enjoyed it. My dire straight story. It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 p.m. . A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won two tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's "Brothers In Arms" tour show (1986) at the Boston garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no, he looks at me and says would you want to go? I responded in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day. We picked up the tickets at the door. I couldn't believe it They were 6th row center on the floor. I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. His fingers fly, no pick... Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second encore song. It was really a very well done show. I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.

I’m 64yrs old and have been a fan of Dire Straits ever since they came on the scene back in 1978. The whole band are brilliant but you have the genius that is Mark Knopfler doing his thing on lead guitar. Plus the equally brilliant Terry Williams(rockpile) on the drums. The studio version of this is great but the boys really took it to another level with this live performance.
‘Homey on guitar”? 😂. He just happens to be one of the top 5 rock guitarist in the world. Mark Knopfler. Only he and David Gilmour can pull your heartstrings out of your chest.
David was recording up at Mark's British Grove Studios earlier in the year for a cancer charity project. There's a great photo of the two of them. I really hope they recorded at least one track together!
I'd add Tommy Emmanuel to that list of Mark and David, but in a different way. When Eric Clapton says you're one of the best he's ever heard and played with and Chet Atkins certifies you as a guitar player (only a handful have Chet's CGP) you have to be doing something right! You only have to listen to 'Initiation' to hear the multitude of sounds an accoustic guitar can make with only reverb, echo, and tens of thousands of hours of practice and an understanding of the instrument and its functions. To think Tommy also can't read music and was self-taught. He didn't even know there was a bass player when younger and thought the bass line on the radio was also from the guitar, so he taught himself to play both lines at once!
Thanks for this great reaction! I love Dire Straits and this song is one of my favs for sure. I grew up listening to this tune on the radio and have loved it from the moment I first heard it. Peace and love only
@doughaviland1729 • Bro couldn't agree more! "Telegraph Road" still blows my mind after hearing it live. There's more where that came from though. I'd add "Romeo and Juliet" to the mix of requests too! And how about "Money For Nothing" first the original studio album version! 🤗
Did lights for Dire Straits on their first album tour, David (Marks younger brother) was on rythym, Lovely people. Sultans had just broke big time but they never cancelled any of the tiny gigs they had been booked for. Title album is still one of the best debut albums I've heard. Enjoyed your face as each musical movement evolved, can it get better, yes it can, did it, yes it did. Oh heck I need longer arms.
It escapes a lot of people's notice that Mark Knofler is left-handed, but he plays right-handed. For all the accolades Jimi Hendrix got, he didn't have the ability to do that!
Aren't they simply epic? As much as I love them, I loved your reaction as much or more! Watching you experience The Sultans of Swing was all the wake-up I needed today! I took that cassette tape with me to Alaska in 1989 and listened to it as we traveled by skiff from bay to bay, finding beaches oiled by the Exxon Valdez misstep. The boys helped keep my spirits from falling too hard, and I love them to this day. Enjoy the ride with them. You caught their groove, and I think you will be listening to them for a while!
I just turned 59 in Nov and growing up I LOVED Dire Straights and Sultans of Swing was my jam! The guitar solo parts still give me goosys! I just had a concert in my apt lol. I hope you will check out their other hits, like Money for Nothing ("I want my MTV" came about from that song.) Their song, So Far Away from Me, is another hit. I've always loved the guitar in bands and I remember watching a Documentary...20+ years ago they were talking to Pete Townsand (The Who) and he told the story of him taking his friend (Jimmy Page from guitarist and founder of Leg Zeppland) to see this American guitar player. Watching him play, he commented, basically, that guy is going to put us out of business. He was talking about the legend Jimi Hendricks when he went over to the UK at the beginning of his career.
😂😂😂 I thought you where going into an epileptic fit before.. Tunnel Of Love from the same concert will blow you away trust me..and MERRY CHRISTMAS dude..❄️❄️❄️☃️
He is an amazing musician. He wrote the music for The Princess Bride He wrote Private Dancer that he then gave to Tina Turner for her comeback. And does stuff like this.
LOL. I love your reaction. I'm 68 yrs old now and this is the music I grew up with. Not the same as live performances but it's great that we still have the recordings and videos to allow us to appreciate what was available to us back in the day.
Same! I'm the same age and I can't explain how much joy it brings me to see younger people - who know music - getting to hear and appreciate these legitimate legends
Money for Nothing - Music for Montserrat Concert at The Royal Albert Hall. All 4 together with the members of the orchestra and choir bopping away behind them clearly loving every minute of the most fun rendition of the song ever!
Headband/wristbands come from playing tiny, packed, smoky pubs/clubs in 70s London. Sweat burns into your eyes and face, and this ICONIC Mark Knopfler stage appearance comes from these days.
I only saw Dire Straits once at red rocks in Colorado. But I’ve seen Mark another five times in various venues. Always great. Mark Knopfler is my favorite musician.
Best live version of a song. I just missed Sultans of Swing first time around as I was around 12 but I fell in love with Dire Straits Brothers in Arms Album aged about 15. Money for Nothing was epic with the video at the time with the launch of MTV Europe. It was the first video to launch the show, with it's cutting edge CGI for the time. *I want my MTV*
I’ll never tire of seeing reactions to this, or Telegraph Road from the same gig. Also Private Investigations from 1993 for something just as wild but in a very different way. Great band and great musicianship. Great reaction!
TELEGRAPH ROAD from ALCHEMY LIVE, this same concert, next please, another masterpiece which was the final song from this concert, you won't be disappointed 😅 you're really a gem Very well done ❤
Oh man you're in for a treat. The Alchemy concert is as fine a live show as you will ever see. Their final album, On The Night, is also a live one of superb quality. And that's before you delve into their studio work, Mark's solo career, his 'other band' The Notting Hillbillies, his albums with Chet Atkins and Emmylou Harris and all his movie soundtracks including Local Hero, Last Exit To Brooklyn and The Princess Bride among others.
Yeah, I read on another video that father of the drummer was in the audience for the first time and he just went to town and Knopfler just let him go… He is jamming on them drums for real
BEST REACTION to any music reaction video I have EVER seen --- AFTER the song ended !! Happy exhaustion. That's how I feel every time after hearing it. I played the radio version 1,234 times in the spring of 78 living in a trailer down by the river in Austin, Texas.
It's as close to an orgasmic ''event'' as any song will provide. No wonder you're exhausted. There may be something as good as this somewhere, but nothing better.
I have just Subscribed as you have just heard one of the finest Banfs to come out of England and that says something.:) They perfected their Art in the Pubs and Clubs near me in South East London less than 5 miles away and the GOOD NEWS is that from this same "ALCHEMY" in London Concert is the encore "Telegraph Road" which is, also, magnificent. @@arisultanikI think it's simply because so many somehow seem to have not heard of Dire Straits let alone Mark. It's quite bizarre for a band that sold over 100 million records and were essentially the biggest music act in the world in the mid-80s.
Genius captured in real time. Every component grooving in sync with the other. No autotune. No gimmicks. Just Rock-N-roll. Relish and appreciate it cause you'll never see it again
First, I'd like to compliment you for the way you interject your thoughts without too many pauses. You have a very likable way about you that I first discovered when seeing your "Money for Nothing" reaction. Yes, Dire Straits is bad-ass. This song is one that I can listen to repeatedly and have been for many years. A real masterpiece. Fun fact: Mark Knopfler, the lead guitarist wrote the song, "Private Dancer" which was performed at his request by Tina Turner.
Just discovered your cool channel. Nice reaction. If you like this I guarantee you will love Calling Elvis from Dire Straits-Live "On The Night" 1993. Cheers all the best and hope you have a great festive season, cheers from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸
Sure that is The Concert, but I was very lucky to see them in L A. Was at The Roxy on Sunset, they had only two albums released. The Roxy for some that was never there is like a bar, get your table and girls waiting people calling them ordering drinks, nachos. Spend the evening with my girl, she had no idea who they were drinking Heineken with them 30 mts or less . Was 1981 , 82 it was time For love over gold
Dire Straits' excellence performing "Sultans" demonstrates that being a rock star takes a bit more effort than their "Money for nothing and your chicks for free" piece suggests.
A 1980's Dire Straits gig would take your heart rate from 60 to 200 bpm several times over the couple of hours it took. I had it happen to me in 1986, age 17. Melbourne Australia. I had this VHS. I knew what I was in for.

@@devilsadvocate2548 …. Yep. I would agree. Tommy is extraordinarily gifted. I am also a fan of Joe Bonamassa as well, and for different reasons.
Stevie Ray Vaughan, too.
One of the great musical performances of all time - by, IMO, the greatest guitarist I have ever seen or heard.
Thanks for this great reaction! I love Dire Straits and this song is one of my favs for sure. I grew up listening to this tune on the radio and have loved it from the moment I first heard it. Peace and love only
TELEGRAPH ROAD from the same ALCAMY LIVE concert will ALSO blow your mind!😅❤
One of the best reactions to this masterpiece.
Your reaction was per fect! Makes me smile.
Sensational band at the time. Mark Knopfler was the lead singer/songwriter/lead guitarist. He is just AMAZING!!!!!!!
What a band, what talent, brain breaking good sound, blessed in my youth to be around it. Love from Yorkshire England
This is my all-time favorite song, and one of my top three favorite guitar solos! What a great reaction!
Best live performance by a rock band....ever.
😂😂😂 I thought you where going into an epileptic fit before.. Tunnel Of Love from the same concert will blow you away trust me..and MERRY CHRISTMAS dude..❄️❄️❄️☃️
He is an amazing musician.
He wrote the music for The Princess Bride
He wrote Private Dancer that he then gave to Tina Turner for her comeback.
And does stuff like this.
ty
Still remember attending one of their concerts in Vienna in the 90s. Just wow.
Edit: just checked; the concert was May 15th, 85. time flies….
Great reaction! He's legendary. Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Sting, Phil Collins are all friends.
Money for Nothing - Music for Montserrat Concert at The Royal Albert Hall. All 4 together with the members of the orchestra and choir bopping away behind them clearly loving every minute of the most fun rendition of the song ever!
What a smooth grove ❤
Headband/wristbands come from playing tiny, packed, smoky pubs/clubs in 70s London.
Sweat burns into your eyes and face, and this ICONIC Mark Knopfler stage appearance comes from these days.
Everybody loves this one..
I've been a Dire Straits fan for 40 years.
Can you imagine what it was like to be there ? Well this guy saw them live twice in the 80s will never forget it. ❤❤❤❤❤
Rite n front
I only saw Dire Straits once at red rocks in Colorado. But I’ve seen Mark another five times in various venues. Always great. Mark Knopfler is my favorite musician.
What you and everyone missed living in the 70's and 80's....awesome times!!!
Hardest working drummer ever. Was hooked the minute I heard this song back in 78/79.
That's not even their normal drummer. 🥁
This whole Alchemy Live album is fire! I was blessed to have seen these guys in concert back in the day.
I love that you found DireStraights amazing. They are exceptional.
I met Mark once few years ago and he is the nicest guy ever! Such a great guitarist
😊
First time Pick Withers (Drummer) father ever saw him play live in concert. Augusta Ga
You've got the story right but the drummer is Terry Williams, who replaced Pick Withers.
@@rahhjahh I have to quit smoking that weed late at night 12.55am Augusta Ga thanks
I've been known to do that, myself.
This song is about their love of great music while making great music inspired by said music... brilliant!
The red Stratocaster is something he always wanted, due to his hero having one - Hank Marvin (The Shadows).
Still so epic🇸🇪
And 'master' reaction dude
😭🙆♀️✨
I use this as my 10min default timer... when the crowd starts clapping then I know I have 2mins left 😅
I’ll never tire of seeing reactions to this, or Telegraph Road from the same gig. Also Private Investigations from 1993 for something just as wild but in a very different way. Great band and great musicianship. Great reaction!
TELEGRAPH ROAD from ALCHEMY LIVE, this same concert, next please, another masterpiece which was the final song from this concert, you won't be disappointed 😅 you're really a gem
Very well done ❤
Yes the 9th symphony of Rock!
We have a spot open at our over-actor reactors anonymous get together. Just kidding. Keep loving the music bro!
Drummer epic on this live performance.
I heard about em for years (i'm old lol) but having actually listened to em... goddam !
@@jjc5407 Thank you so much for the info. I'm diving in!
@@_eclipz_ enjoy!
Proceeds to play it again....
I love how Mark never uses a pick to make his guitar sing!!!!!!! Just awesome finger picking!!!!! Thanks for this. So says Austin TX!!!!😎🍸
He does sometimes use a pick, just very rarely.
Drummer da real mvp
Yeah, I read on another video that father of the drummer was in the audience for the first time and he just went to town and Knopfler just let him go… He is jamming on them drums for real
@christielysdale1815 that's awesome. The first time I watched I seriously thought there were had to be 2 drummers. Amazing
Yeah he was going crazy hard on those drums the entire time! 👌🏼👌🏼
Blew a few speakers on this song.
BEST REACTION to any music reaction video I have EVER seen ---
AFTER the song ended !!
Only David Gilmour can compete with this.
I think this chap experience his first eargasm!
Sultans of swing also made the song “Brothers in Arms” that Home Free covers too
I have just Subscribed as you have just heard one of the finest Banfs to come out of England and that says something.:)
They perfected their Art in the Pubs and Clubs near me in South East London less than 5 miles away and the GOOD NEWS is that from this same "ALCHEMY" in London Concert is the encore "Telegraph Road" which is, also, magnificent. ENJOY...
One of the best band ever, and I regret never seen in concert.. this song right here well,, I have no words.. great reaction brother.. much love and respect for MIAMI 305.🇨🇺🇨🇺🇨🇺🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🎵🎵🎵
You’ve GOT to listen to the studio version of Sultans. It will BLOW YOUR MIND
One of the few people Eric Clapton will play rhythm guitar for.
I am 80's generation, LOVE THIS! I would love it if you would react to 5 Minutes of Funk!
One of the greatest underrated guitar players!
Why do so many people say that?? He’s far from underrated. He is recognized everywhere as one of the greatest.
It was I a few days ago ,,who brought " Dire Straits " to life on UA-cam ! thank you very much..........
Am seeing so many reaction videos to this performance. Everyone is blown away by Mark Knopfler's guitar playing!!
He has suck a distinct sound and a pure style. Everything is clean and precise.
Had the pleasure of seeing him a few years back.
It never ceases to amaze me how many say they haven't heard of Dire Straits. They were pretty much the biggest band in the world in the mid '80s.
This is how you play guitar WITHOUT A PICK!
😂😂😂😂😂
That's real music bro. Your reaction priceless! Thank you! ❤
New subscriber.
❤
That is all.
I love when Mark hits the notes that make you mad about it lol
*I'm blessed to be a 70s and 80s kid. THE BEST!*
Dire Straits' excellence performing "Sultans" demonstrates that being a rock star takes a bit more effort than their "Money for nothing and your chicks for free" piece suggests.
My man was flabbergasted, I love that song too❤
They're having fun, cause they know, they rock !
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 .. this is awesome !! Dire Straits is just incredible!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thats what real skill will make you feel
A 1980's Dire Straits gig would take your heart rate from 60 to 200 bpm several times over the couple of hours it took. I had it happen to me in 1986, age 17. Melbourne Australia. I had this VHS. I knew what I was in for.
Such an on point reaction!!
Enjoyed seeing you get inspired and start singing along to the rythme.
