What I love sbout Dire Straits is that they don't just plsy songs, they paint musical landscapes for you to wander around in
Their music makes sense. Not just banging and yelling
Nicely put!
You explained that very well!
Dire Straits on fire! Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitar players ever. Listen to the drummer Terry Williams. What an energy he has!
I think Terry Williams was/is one of the fastest and most concise drummers ever, truly amazing.
Know his son. He's from Swansea South Wales
Quite simply one of the best bands ever, I only saw them the once still the best gig I’ve ever been to.
i immensely envy you
I saw Mark Knopfler in Christchurch, New Zealand and at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Decent. 🙂
Terry’s beating those drums like they owe him money.
He doesn't need money. He gets it for nothing and also the chicks for free :D
There's another good analogy but yours is safe :)
I read somewhere that this was the first concert that his dad was able to come see him and so he really went all out.
I love it!
The phrasing and dynamic control of Mark’s solo guitar is unmatched and unbelievable!
Normaly studio album is the best , with Dire straits
Live is nr 1.
Mark Knopfler one of the finest guitarists ever, nice!
I agree with you. Name me somebody that is better than Mark.
@@thomasreed49 I put Stevie Ray Vaughan up there with Mark, but we're talking 2 different styles.
@@thomasreed49 Kirk Hammett
Add to that his brilliance in constructing a song...
The finest.
Possibly the greatest riff and guitar song ever written . Beato does a great breakdown of all the parts in this song and it really is pure genius . Combines elements from multiple genres of music
Beato, yes, for any musician, but especially for an old school rock fan, a great channel.
They look young because it was about 40 + years ago When music was so much better and more varied.
Yeah, 41 years old now. Alchemy live was recorded in London in late july 83... The DVD/Blueray of the entire concert is AMAZING.
Music is just as good and just as varied now. 40 years from now, people will be talking about how great the music from this time was and how they wish they were around when it was new.
@@Rystefn I seriously doubt that.
@@Rystefn I think you're cheating yorself. Yes - there are pieces of today's good music, but you need to look outside of mainstream. What you hear here - is just a day alike any other in 70's, 80's - each day something of this caliber.
Bro. In many ways I am envious of you young 'uns finding Dire Straits for the first time. But! I was there, that very night. Unreal experience.
Young uns finding them? Im in my mid thirties, and one of my earliest childhood memories is listening to Walk of life in the car with my dad, who has been a fan since the band was formed. Im still surprised by how amazing they sound whenever I stumble over a old live recording of them 30+ years after being exposed to their entire discography
Happy for you!!!
Had the pleasure of seeing them in Germany on Brothers in Arms tour in 85 and seen Mark Knopfler twice in Manchester
The singer turned 72 today. I’m sure he’d be happy to hear you say how young he looks. Haha. Walk of life is another good one from them. They’re a WAY underrated band
I am pedantic, especially about my hero. He turned 73 lol
The singer? RU joking? The leader, songwriter, guitarist. This was his band DS is MK. And BTW he's 73. Underrated band. It seens you don't know you're born
@@ekstradycja it seems you either don’t speak English or you should seek medical attention for the stroke you just had…
Next listen to Walk of Life
Under rated? 13 million listens per month on Spotify 30 years after their last album. They are one of the most highly rated bands in rock history. And Mark knopfler is one the most highly rated guitarists.
My favorites are
- Telegraph Road
- Tunnel of love
- Romeo and Juliet
- Love over gold
- Brothers in arms
- Skateaway
- and all the other great songs 🙂
Heard them live in 1992, incredible concert. Best band ever, in my opinion
Respect the fact Mark plays electric guitar with fingers....memories of the 70s ❤
They asked Prince one time "What's it like being the best guitar player in the world?" and he replied "Ask Mark Knopfler."
Once you are at the top of your profession, "best" is very subjective. Prince himself was definitely one of the best as well. Both masters of their craft.
And Mark Knopfler said ask Rory Gallagher.
Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page be at the top as well.
Lots of "best guitarists" rankings out there, people may be in different places on the various lists but it don't matter none...
@@ernesthakey3396 And Eric Clapton said; ask Øystein Sunde......
Don't forget Lindsay Buckingham 👌👍
Dire Straits came along when I was in my late 20's and I got to see them in Cleveland on their first American tour in 1979. I saw them four or five times in the 80's & 90's. They broke up a while ago, but Mark Knopfler still records and tours. I saw him last in 2006 when he toured with Emmylou Harris on the All The Roadrunning tour in Washington, DC. Great album and great concert. Knopfler is a great songwriter and musician.
I saw him live 10 years after you. He still shreds. What a legend of a man.
They did this at Live Aid, and were followed by Queen. I recorded it at the time and still have it on VHS somewhere. In the movie "Bohemian Rhapsody", before Queen goes on stage, and Freddy is addressing the other members of Queen in the backstage area, you can hear Dire Straits, apparently onstage, playing this, in the background. It blew my mind that they included this detail. I got up in the middle of the night to record the original as it went to air by satellite across the whole world (me in Melbourne Australia), and my parents thought I was mad. I recorded the Queen bits afterwards because I always like them, but my sister loved them. She liked Dire Straits too, and we were both there at that gig in 1986. It was her 20th Birthday, so I guess I was 17. They did a run of shows that was never beaten globally until 1988, when Pink Floyd beat it, same town, I and I was at the opener of that one as well. The record stood until P!nk beat it a few years back (same Town! We like who we like!) but I wasn't at that. Ex-wife was though.
Mark Knopfler turned 73 and still going. Plays guitar as good as ever. Telegraph Road from this very concert is even more epic. Cheers.
It's a close race though. They were on fire for this run of concerts. I saw them in '86 here in Melbourne and they smashed both songs. And all the others. He also sings as good as ever. Which is...terrible. But it's his voice. You sing them with a more trained sounding voice, and they don't work. Imagine Bob Dylan's voice sung beautifully and you have Peter Paul and Mary doing Mr.Tambourine Man. It's a different song. You also might get why Dylan got Knopfler to produce a lot of his albums back in the '80s
@@professornuke7562 yes I'm from Melbourne too and saw the Sydney Final Concert.. I'll never forget it 😊
@@MinistryOfDarkness11 I think I have a VHS recording of that one somewhere. I remember they all looked so tired at the end, because they’d been on tour for nearly two years, and played so many shows in Oz.
@@professornuke7562 yes absolutely. I heard Mark didn't touch a guitar for 6 weeks after that tour lol
Mark is the same age as me, wish I had a 10th of his talent!
Dire Straits was a great band from my youth! That's cool you got to react to a concert; the one played on the radio is much shorter. It's still a song you can sing to the steering wheel to! Check out their "Money for Nothing" song. It's another banger!
When I finally saw them live in 1990 they did a superjammin 20+ minute long "Sultans of Swing!"
I get exhausted just watching that drummer. Awesome performance all around.
This is one of the most iconic Rock songs ever recorded and, certainly, one the greatest guitar leads ever. This is the late 70's son. Their all in their mid to late 70's now....like me. Happy that you enjoyed it.
And that's what you call music.
Brilliant track from a brilliant British band and I'm playing this loud through Rogers speakers made before this band was formed and my house is shaking. Their 'Brothers in Arms' track will always be my favourite.
DS is not a brilliant British band... among others. Knopfler is the musical genius of pop rock music of the last 50 years
@@strato9223 Dire Straits were a British rock band formed in London in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (lead vocals and lead guitar), David Knopfler (rhythm guitar and backing vocals), John Illsley (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Pick Withers (drums and percussion). They were active from 1977 to 1988 and again from 1990 to 1995. London is the Capital of England and England is a part of Great Britain, so YES YES YES, DS are a brilliant British band. However you are correct in that Mark Knopfler is a musical genius.
Your Grand parents were cooler than you thought they were! Great music back in the day.
They’re musicians, a rare breed these days.
Mark Knopfler just possibly the best finger picker ever.
He's definitely one of the best! Right up there with Nokie Edward's of The Ventures
Lindsey Buckingham is pretty vicious on those strings too, but Mark is definitely criminally underrated and lesser known. I don't think his name rolls of the tongue as a rock-n-roller!
Only the best Live performance of all time from one of the Best Bands Ever !
Just by the way they are looking and smiling at each other you can tell that they know they are on fire and playing above themselves they almost seem surprised at how good they are playing.
I think it came from the drummer who had his father in the audience for the first time so played a hard beat and the rest came to the party.
It took til 10:07 to get to the iconic guitar lick from the studio version! My mind was going crazy waiting for them to resolve that! I can’t stop listening to this song until I hear that part every time!🔥
It’s like the preceding 10 minutes is just a build up to that point!
And he teases you over and over!
Absolutely the best guitarist ever and ably supported by Terry Williams on the drums! I liken this to a car starting in 1st gear at 6:44, then 2nd gear at 8:28, 3rd gear at 9:08 and 4th gear at 10:07!!! It builds up speed so incredibly, fantastically, mindblowingly well with Terry struggling but succeeding to keep up the pace ! What a performance!!👍👍👏🏻👏🏻
Yeah, we where all waiting for that but what great 10 minutes they were!!!
Absolutely. Ha. And he knew exactly what he was doing!
I agree with all of the above! Simply the best live performance I have ever heard. Talk about being on all cylinders! Incredible stuff. I listen to this song about every day to get me going, and get chills each time!!!!
Mark Knopfler, the lead singer/guitarist, also did the entire soundtrack for the movie The Princess Bride. (I did a quick scan of the comments, didn't see that anywhere, but if someone already said that, sorry!)
It's good to see you becoming acquainted with Dire Straits, hopefully the first of many reactions. The pace of this one is so frenetic it almost takes your breath away. One reactor said it put him in a trance.
I like your calm Tuxedo cat. All it needs is a little bow tie to complete the formal outfit.
Other songs include:
Walk of life.
So far away from me.
Brothers in arms.
Fantastic band. One of the greatest guitarists of all time!
That's Right Give them some LOVE ❤ They Deserve all the BEST 🎶✌🔥🔥🔥🔥💋
I am, was extremely enthralled by the drummer! I love drums, when done right and not all over crazy. This was perfection. A grand band of the "old" days. :) They are all my age now. around 73! LOL
That was Terry Williams, the best drummer no one has heard of
@@richardhargrave6082 brilliant live drummer, madness that they left him off the Brothers in Arms album and got someone else to do it. His only contribution was the intro to Money for Nothing
Me too. Love them
I remember hearing them for the 1st time back in August 1977
Traveling with my family
Fell in love with this song
One of the best live rock performances, ever. Terry Williams was going off on the drums. He is now 76 and retired in Wales. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists in the world and very humble about it. If you mention it to him, his response is usually, "Hell, I can barely hold the thing." There is a great documentary on Terry on UA-cam, "Just the drummer in the band." Other things to check out are Brothers in Arms (official video), Money For Nothing (Live Aid with Sting), Walk of Life (official video), and Telegraph Road (Alchemy Live).
This is something today's artists could never do..play with instinct..this is 90% feel by the guys. This is why our music was so great...the room left for improvisation..take notes young artists..this is what a live performanve is all about.
Listen to the studio version of this one. They are playing around with it here, just having fun, as you noted. But the licks are cleaner in the studio cut.
This was my hero band when I was young.
Mark Knopfler Lead guitar
Hal Lindes Rhythm guitar
John Illsey Bass guitar
Terry Williams Drums
Alan Clark Keys
Tommy Mandel Additional keys for these shows, July 1983 London.
That’s David Knopfler on rhythm guitar, Hal Lindes didn’t join until their last album.
@@teresaburton4145 Its Hal, David left before the tour
@@richardhargrave6082 I’m sorry, I’m wrong. Hal does look like David. All this time I thought David was on the Alchemy tour.
Illsley.
You are witnessing greatness pure and simple
pure music, best live album ever!
Mark Knoppfler (lead + vocals) is Emeritus Professor at Newcastle University. He's 74 now!
Mark uses finger pickin style from Chet Adkins . Iam 83 and a bluegrasser but this band is a great talent and Mark is a humble talent
Great song choice! I always think this is just some musicians having fun. They love what they do.
I drive to work every morning listening to this always gets me in a great mood
So glad you discovered this. This is the music of my youth.
Obviously the guitar is one of the best, he is so good , but listen to the drums the whole time when you hit repeat, guitar y drums on this, is absolutely fire and will remain forever, sooooooiiiiii fuckin good 😊
yeah that's real music...and the guitar is just amazing....smile for ever
Yeah, official video of their song called Money for Nothing, that's fire too.
It's really funny to see that you young lads don't know bands like Dire Straits. You still have a lot to discover 😊
I love the creativity of Dire Straits and the official version is lit!
This was the drummer dad the first time too see him play live in a group
Best video is were Eric Clapton steps back and nodded his head like go ahead take care of the rest of the show and Mark doesn't disappoint anyone and Eric just smiles shaking his head like boy has some skills
listening to Dire Straits since 81/82. Sultans of Swing has one of the best solos ever.
I re-lived the excitement I experienced when I heard this rendition for the first time in 1984. Thank You!
"Dire Straits" (debut album), "Making Movies", and "Telegraph Road" are my top three favorite studio albums.
Mark Knopfler is a genius.

Money for Nothing helped make MTV, MTV.
I saw them on this tour in 1983. I was 19 years old and the concert blew my mind. I think the AUDIENCE was as exhausted as the band was at the end of the show. Mark Knopfler-accept no substitutes. 🫡👍🏼❤️
"This is actually kinda lit " - ahhh you youngsters are adorable.....🤣
I love his reaction when Knopfler lets loose on the guitar.
Loved this song when it first came out. Remember it well. Memories!
I love how you get into the music and appreciate it! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Mark Knofler wrote movie music too, like the Princess Bride.
Have you noticed him finger picking, no plectrums are used by him.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making a living like that wouldn't suck.
Definitely check out "telegraph road" from the same "alchemy" tour. You will love it. It's a bit of a slow build but it's epic.
Telegraph Road from Alchemy Live is my tour fave.
With this song, they have you riding that wave. I love it! They pull back, then build back and then slam for a while before doing it all over again. Modern music could take a lesson in how to play with the emotions of a listener like this. It draws you in more and more every time they pull that and by the end, if you are not rocking - you better check yourself for a pulse!
Their music is so clean...precise...and incredible!
Mark's chickin'-pickin' is peerless! I wonder if this young man realizes Mark is not using a pick - I love to see young peoples' reaction to musicians using real instruments, especially 70's rock-music. This song will melt your face off. Best riff EVER made, played, or produced. Their drummer is really going off the meter, as well. Mark Knopler: THE Maestro.
Two words... Effortless fun!
This song is about a true story of being caught in a rain storm and ducking into a bar where this swing band was playing after the set hespoke to them.
He is spitting with that guitar. Have loved dire staits for as long as I can remember. Nice to see someone new enjoying there talent.
Mark Knopfler was born in 1949. The Alchemy tour was in 1983, so he was 34, and Dire Straits was already 6 years old at that time.
Best live guitar solo ever
I saw their Love Over Gold tour concert in Sydney. Musically speaking, nothing I've experienced before or since has drawn a remote parallel.
Watch the movie Princess Bride. We wrote and played the score. The first time I watched it and heard the first note, I knew it was him. He can play any genre and excel. You will never watch the movie the same way again. Listen to "Boom, Like That" of "Song for Sonny Liston".
another great british band .
Yes, there once was a time when musicians made great music and performed legendary shows.
Yeah, it seems so laid back and fast at the same time. A great performance. Thanks for your reaction.
Aamazing you put on the "Fan Face" imediatally!
Mark Knopfler could really make the guitar sing just awesome.
You need to also hear Brothers in Arms. It's one of the greatest songs ever.
yep, brings me to tears
This live version is more up-tempo from the studio version that is relatively laid back. Mark Knopfler is one of the great composers and guitar players.
Edit: John Isley is on bass but not sure if that is Pick Whithers on drums.
Terry Williams on drums.
Totally digging the plays of Dire Straights and Marc …I am very happy as we call his guitar a California Guitar…thanks man, have a wonderful holiday♥️🌀
I see your cat back there supervising you. They do that, don't they?
" a couple of bro's just having fun".........honestly....well said.
I appreciate the transparent window. I’m familiar with the video and I’m here to see your reaction. It’s a helpful presentation.
There are not many who can beat him on a guitar.
Yeah, it was lit. You could see all of the lights! Very hot lights in those days. No LEDs...
A Masterpiece...and you feel the joy in this performance; NO PICK!
To me, hearing Knopfler play the guitar is like watching El Estepario Siberiano play the drums - pure inspiration
If this were Mortal Kombat this would be a flawless victory!
The best band!!!
Tunnel Of Love... live in 85! Highly recommended.
This is their best song, but for your own sake listen to the whole “Brothers in Arms” album. Knoppfler also did the theme music for “Local Hero”, a very good movie.
At 1:22 I legit thought Mark Knopfler was wearing a Santa hat. 😂
Dud...next you should go with "Money for Nothing" and "Your Latest Trick" (both studio versions).
Nothing as good as this concert live... Alchemy
Walk of life. Nelson Mandela 70th birthday concert. Eric Clapton stood in on guitar with an epic solo.
The best guitarist of all time and best song|||
Cat be like: "dude, finally, some Dire Straits."
Check out Money For Nothing and Walk of Life from Dire Straits.
And now Mark Knopfler has gathered 60 other legendary guitarists to release a single to raise money for cancer research. I can't wait to hear this. What a guy!
