My dire straight story. It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 p.m. . A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won two tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's "Brothers In Arms" tour show (1986) at the Boston garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no, he looks at me and says would you want to go? I responded in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day. We picked up the tickets at the door. I couldn't believe it They were 6th row center on the floor. I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. His fingers fly, no pick... Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second encore song. It was really a very well done show. I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.
1986 my favorite year of all time. Met my husband November 22, 1986, had 32 years of happiness with him, rest in peace Alan, till we meet again. All my love, Sonya. Xxx

@kierstenridgway4634 You're right, though anyone seriously interested in music should have heard of the greatest 80s bands and some of 70s and 60s bands. Pretty much every adult in the western world should have heard of the Beatles, arguably one of the best 60s bands, for instance.
Except it’s not the best rock song of all time…. That’s by a band called dire straits, and also has the best intro and guitar riff of all time, it’s called money for nothing. This band will have to settle for 2nd place….. oh wait. Knopfler truly was a virtuoso, and for a period in the 80’s not even Hendrix, Gilmour or Stevie ray could touch him, his ability to connect with everyday life and make a song about moving microwaves and then one of the most emotional beautiful songs of all time (brothers in arms) is just mind blowing. Late 1979. Was in a rock band and we decided we had to do Sultans. Spent many hours trying to do it justice before we played it at an open air concert for around 1500 people. Some didn't understand it because it was so much different than anything they were used to hearing. Seeing this live brought tears to my eyes. What a different time we live in. We were blessed to be the generation of this music.
Wow!! Dire Straits have always been my favorite. I saw them live in Toronto about 30 years ago. Great concert, as always. Stevie Ray Vaughn did a set with Mark. It was fabulous! As I recall Stevie Ray Baughn was killed in an accident not too long after that. (Please correct me if I am wrong about that.)
Sultans Of Swing was their first hit. I've been a guitar player since I was nine years in 1961. I'm seventy two now and I still play. In all that time very few guitarists ever had, in my opinion that "perfect" tone/sound. Knofler had it. Every note sounds perfect.
For my money, Mark Knopfler is an absolute virtuoso guitarist whose playing is not only world leading, but also so melodic. The melodic nature of his solos makes him standout against his contemporaries. At the time that this video was made, the members of Dire Straits were on the top of their game and on top of the world. I agree, for me it was Stevie and Knophler on electric. Sabicas, Mclaughlin, DeLucia, and now Billy Strings. And Wooten on bass. We've been very fortunate to have these talents in our lifetime!

Such a great live version! Dire Straits are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Brothers In Arms", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "So Far Away" etc. They don't have a bad song.
I also liked when Mark turned around and looked at him with a grin after one of his mad fills. Terry was on a mission that night and it is brilliant to watch!
Always great to watch someone discovering Mark Knopfler. One of the best guitar players out there - and he makes it seem like nothing at all, he seems to chill and laid-back while making that guitar SING...And yes, Terry Williams absolutely killed it!
This music is as "organic" as it gets,, right down to the root. They never lose it. It's like the music owns the band. It's a river of sound. Magnificent! No matter how many times I have listened to this, in a few different sets, it's always so captivating, it invigorates you.
I think the studio version gives the context for how brilliant this live version is. The original is much slower, smoother, and more intelligible (both lyrically and melodically). It was a brilliant song that got enormous radio airtime and created a solid platform from which the live version blasts off. At the time of the concert, the song was an established, Grammy winning hit. The band had been touring heavily for a few years on the back of their big hit single. They were an incredibly tight machine and they (and the song) were evolving beyond the original boundaries. The concert shows them shaking off the doldrums of playing a hit song night after night and launching it into outer space. Much faster, and now packed full of new ideas, the song becomes a roller-coaster for the band, and the audience, to try to ride, holding on for dear life.
A published record often has the aim to convey the general feeling/vibe. To achieve that, you keep the musical texture lean&efficient, without too much riff raff. Added benefit: it also promotes improvisation at live shows. Credit to Mark Knopfler, he is one of the very few who can go as crazy. He reminds me of Chris Thile.
@@smeetsnoud1 I love the Mandela Live version with Eric Clapton joining in. Not the same energy we when they were this young but the guitar and drums are just as awesome.
I love watching reactions of people who have never experienced this performance. I love your reaction man. It was great Mark Knopfler is just insane on Guitar . He has his own style and it’s just amazing to me. His brother was playing the telecaster next to him. The bass player was greatand the drummer was out of his mind. Unbelievable man and the keyboard player doing the organ and then piano. I have two favorite music videos I’ve ever seen and I’m 71 years old and I’ve seen a lot of music videos. This is one of them I never get tired of them. The other one is well. My guitar gently weeps from a night for George, so it was a tribute to George Harrison after he passed away And Paul McCartney is playing piano on it and harmonizing the way he did on the record and Eric Clapton a singing lead. He got Ringo drumming Billy Preston on organ, George’s son playing guitar, Jeff, Lynn from ELO playing guitar and doing harmony,Albert Lee on Guitar…etc! That is my 2nd favorite video. Check it out! Great Job! You got a like and subscribe from me! You may be too young to recognize the names I just put in there! lol 😂 I’m Grateful to have been alive at the time! 😎
I was lucky enough to go to this concert with my dad. It was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in July 1983 as part of the Love Over Gold tour. The best concert I have ever attended. This track plus Telegraph road will make you cry with joy. It was utterly mesmerising, even better than Live Aid.
Mark was brilliant on the guitar as always in this performance. I'd expect nothing less from one of the cleanest guitarists of all time. Terry Williams for me would definitely get an honourable mention in this song. He killed the drums in this, and IMHO made one of the greatest impacts (pun intended) on the energy of the song. Just like Alan Clark killed the keys in Telegraph Road. The entire band that night was on another level of musicianship. Live music doesn't get a lot better.
Thank you for highlighting this wonderful song and band. I'm an old lady and I still rock to this band's music whenever I can. It's awsome that you are bringing this music to this ever so cool current generation. Thanks Again!!
Great reaction! You nailed it - that performance was super clean and pretty much flawless. Nothing was covered up by distortion or effects - that band was 100% synchronized, in the groove, and working together as one - and they knew it. The swagger, the energy, the breakdown, the build-up...absolutely superb!
You’ve just watched the greatest progression of guitar solos ever on stage. It was a total pleasure to be in the crowd for one of the concerts of that tour
@@davidfeltz8697 oh yes Telegraph Road - love it. I bought my mate Love over Gold album for his 18th birthday (vinyl in those days of course!) as we were all deep into the Dire Straits journey as each album was released.
Dier Straits in general and Mark Knopfler in particular are absolute legends. I was a teenager in the 80s and could not get enough of them!! Amazing!!!!!
Quite simply the best life performance of any song, by any band, anywhere at any time! There are no words that can do this justice, you just have to experience it for yourself.
I would say it's ONE of the best, but how can we objectively say any is the best when we had the likes of Queen, Pink Floyd, Stevie Ray, Mister Mr., Cher, Led Zeppelin, George Thurgood And many more that were all champeen live performers. Man, we had the best of the best in so many ways it's ridiculous. We were the lucky generation and man I feel sorry for the ones who follow us because they will never have what we had.
Today marks 2 months since my dad passed away at age 78. Dire straits was his favorite group hands down. This song has popped up in my YT feed a lot yesterday and today which is crazy!!! Anyway, I’ve heard this song plenty of times, and it’s nice to see and hear someone react to it for the first time and see them in disbelief. Mark knopfler guitar playing is so good and has such a distinct sound. I truly enjoyed your reaction. Thanks for giving me a fond memory of my dad
Four part harmony of the two guitars, base and keyboards all reinforcing the same melody line, steadily intensifying. Plus the precision of Mark Knopfler's finger-picking - playing without a plectrum or strumming.
He’s a local hero in Newcastle and wrote a tune called “Local Hero” that is played at every Newcastle United home game. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it….
He just released a charity single of Local Hero called Guitar Heros, and it includes soooo many legendary guitarists and musicians. Jeff Beck's last recording.
Mark Knopfler wrote all the music and lyrics for Dire Straits 6 albums, and when they disbanded in 1995 he continued doing the same for his new Mark Solo band and 9 albums later, at 74 is still at it and releasing a new album in 2024. He’s a musical magician I❤MK. Love your reaction, please play Telegraph Road Alchemy Live and Brothers in Arms from Nelson Mandela concert at Wembley
Thanks for your replies @Chiungalla79 & @MrSparklespring. Mark’s list of musical accomplishments & awards are as long as your arm, and as a longtime diehard MK fan I’m pretty au fait with most of them. Sometimes there’s only time to précis a comment, so yep I did miss a lot out. He did indeed write the score for The Princess Bride, but also for 8 other movies (i.e. 6 x soundtrack albums) He also made 4 collaborative albums, & has worked as a producer and sideman for a countless diverse and impressive range of other artists. You never hear MK blowing his own trumpet, but he’s a national treasure in my book I❤️MK
Back in the day when people listened to radio, for three decades you couldn’t go a week and not hear the studio track of this. But now with everything online and self-selecting we get to see first reactions 😂
What I love is the communication between Mark and Terry. That low repetitve riff before the breakdown when Terry is mouthing along is clearly the signal to count bars from there. What a tight band.
I loved how you didn't pause too much and appreciated this absolute masterpiece. My parents remember these times of listening to early bands in the clubs around London. Everyone there was so inspired by black music. Listen to his lyrics ❤ God bless you South London for giving us Mark Knoffler xo
Their debut from 1978 contained the studio version only, which is an all-time classic, winning them a Grammy and the album won them Best New Artist, propelling them to stardom. It's much more laid back than the live version, and contained the amazing trademark guitar licks of the great Mark Knopfler, who is also the lead singer, that the band is known for. Well worth you checking it out. Alchemy Live was released in 1984 and to me is one the greatest live albums ever. Whatever you choose from them, live or studio, you can't go wrong.
Yes, what this person said... Basically yes this SONG debuted in their first self-titled album... but Alchemy Live is a live concert album. I still have my VHS of this show lol. (For the Millenials, VHS is what he had before DVDs... For the Gen Z, VHS is what we had before Netflix.)
Best drumming ever!! That guy is insanely good, and oh, Mark Knopler insanely great, this arrangement live version, no comparison to studio and to any other performance! Stand up and cheer!!!
"WOW", "satisfying", They gave us our money's worth, and then some! You'll play this one again and again. So glad you enjoyed this one. Great reaction.
Just drives the song! I am not sure the average Rock and Roll fans appreciate just how good this band was live. This is not even my favorite song of the performance. Sooo goooood!
Yep and yet so musically varied too. His use of different techniques combined with different guitars just adds to his genius. Sultans of Swing, Romeo and Juliet, Private Investigations, Money For Nothing to take just 4 examples from his extensive musical catalogue - all masterpieces, yet all played on different guitars with variations in techniques. The man truly is a virtuoso despite being too humble to ever except that description.
@jjc5407 did you ever see the video he does where he just talks about guitars and playing for like an hour, and picks up different guitars through it and plays little bits etc....sounds like it could be incredibly boring but it is just mesmerising.
@@universalfleece is that "Guitar Stories" where Dire Straits' bass player John Ilsley talks to Mark about his 6 most iconic guitars? If so then yes! It's a great documentary. The part where he drops by a pub to effortlessly jam with his old friend (and fellow Notting Hillbilly) Steve Phillips who he bought his National Style O from so many years ago is perhaps the highlight. They just make it look so effortless.
THIS brilliant performance was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, UK during two days in late July, 1983. It's one of those unforgettable experiences... and all the treasured memories from that particular moment in time come rushing back - every time I watch someone react to this absolutely amazing performance...
Since I first heard this on the radio in 1978 I've been hooked on Dire Straits and MK. All their tunes are great but some take a couple of times listening to appreciate. This one grabs you right from the beginning. I'm 70 and getting old but this never gets old.
62 myself remembering hearing it whenever it first played on the radio like you. Remember thinking at the time what a great tune it was. Little did I know that they would be the soundtrack to my life.
Adam, you and so many others have mentioned the awesome drumming of Terry Williams. Try, if you can, to get hold of a copy of 'Spunk Rock' by the Welsh band 'Man' and from the 'Greasy Truckers' Party' album. Terry's drumming on that is every bit as good as this performance - just mind-blowing.
What just happened? Exactly what happens when you have talented musicians, at their peak, performing live!!! Nothing beats these old rockers performing live, as the new artists just don't have the same work ethic. Heck, saw Journey live a few months ago - for the 50th anniversary tour. They killed it!!! Talent and craftsmanship win all the time. Performing live, it's just magic. No auto tune. No tape with lip singing. Just pure ability.
Probably one of the best live performances ever!
That and Chicago's 25 or 6 to 4 at Tanglewood.

Much faster, and now packed full of new ideas, the song becomes a roller-coaster for the band, and the audience, to try to ride, holding on for dear life.
The Studio Version doesn´t dissppoint
A published record often has the aim to convey the general feeling/vibe. To achieve that, you keep the musical texture lean&efficient, without too much riff raff.
Added benefit: it also promotes improvisation at live shows. Credit to Mark Knopfler, he is one of the very few who can go as crazy. He reminds me of Chris Thile.
@@smeetsnoud1I've heard about 5 or 6 versions and he doesn't really improvise much..a few minor variations is all
@@smeetsnoud1 I love the Mandela Live version with Eric Clapton joining in.
Satisfying is the perfect word. This is f*cking incredible! One of the best live performances EVER!
This one of the coolest things I've ever read!!! I can't imagine the energy in that place, and just envy you!!!
You lucky! Just watching it and listening to it over years is in itself overwhelming. Can't imagine for those who had the chance to attend the live!
Don't forget to mention the sound quality and sound arrangement. This performance should be intouchable .. perfection.
I remembered Dire Straits concert at Festival Hall Brisbane Queensland Australia Totally Awesone Concert.
One of the greatest guitarists ever.
Mark Knopfler is one of the most proficient guitarists in rock. His sweeping arpeggio and chord changes are amazing. Million dollar fingers! ❤❤❤
You are right on point. It was one of the cleanest.
I love your reactions - love this song, a classic here in the UK
Thank you for highlighting this wonderful song and band. I'm an old lady and I still rock to this band's music whenever I can. It's awsome that you are bringing this music to this ever so cool current generation. Thanks Again!!
Drummer fantastic on this performance also
Great reaction! You nailed it - that performance was super clean and pretty much flawless. Nothing was covered up by distortion or effects - that band was 100% synchronized, in the groove, and working together as one - and they knew it. The swagger, the energy, the breakdown, the build-up...absolutely superb!
Yep, no overdubs in post-production that are normally applied to live recordings to 'fix' mistakes. They genuinely were that phenomenal.
It's made all the more remarkable by just how clean Knopfler's guitar sound is - no where to hide there.
You’ve just watched the greatest progression of guitar solos ever on stage. It was a total pleasure to be in the crowd for one of the concerts of that tour
The band is completely insane. Telegraph road is my fave of this performance. Just amazing.
Amazing!!!!!
without any doubt..the finest 10 minutes of live music you will ever hear....stunning
I love that song and that film.
The movie is a cult. Live it. Plus they play the title at every Toon game
He just released a charity single of Local Hero called Guitar Heros, and it includes soooo many legendary guitarists and musicians. Jeff Beck's last recording.
Going Home....wonderful :)
Thank you for the deep, insightful analysis…never has so little been said in so many words.
Don`t forget that he also did the score to The Princess Bride.
@@Chiungalla79 ....i still have the vinyl. I bought it after watching the film.
He's not only a top guitarplayer but his songwriting skills are incredible. Very versatile, he can write a song about anything.
The greatest guitarist.. Humble as always
I love when people see this for the first time. So, so great.
Agree with
Best drumming ever!! That guy is insanely good, and oh, Mark Knopler insanely great, this arrangement live version, no comparison to studio and to any other performance! Stand up and cheer!!!
This live version is soooo much better than the studio version.
ONLY if one is intimately familiar with the original is this even understandable.
aber nicht diese
@@jollyrodgers7272 The lyrics are very good too, and more understandably in the studio - certainly the live version is more exciting.
Still so love the original with that drum beat start!
Just wanted to tell you that I loved that you read the Wiki page beforehand.
This is my drive to work song. Every day!
AWESOME !!
Choice
Marry me, or at least give me a lift to work 😘
Do you speed ? 🤣🤣Ido !!
"WOW", "satisfying", They gave us our money's worth, and then some! You'll play this one again and again. So glad you enjoyed this one. Great reaction.
You just witnessed one of the greatest bands ever, and performance!
This performance brings me to tears. It is that good.
That drummer is Terry Williams 🔥🎶🥁 He is amazing!!
That drum fill became legendary after this came out.
Terry Williams on drums
Just drives the song! I am not sure the average Rock and Roll fans appreciate just how good this band was live. This is not even my favorite song of the performance. Sooo goooood!
É talmente dentro al pezzo che sembra un alieno. Master! N. 1
I can listen to this all day and not get bored for a second.
Mark Knopfler's guitar tone is immediately recognizable. One of a handful of guitarists you can say that about.
Mark and Willie Nelson, two different yet awesome guys
Yep . Just like Jimi Hendrix , David Gilmour from Pink Floyd and Eddie Van Halen from Van Halen. Guitar Gods !
Had to take those drums out on a stretcher. My God!!!
THIS brilliant performance was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, UK during two days in late July, 1983.
It's one of those unforgettable experiences... and all the treasured memories from that particular moment in time come rushing back - every time I watch someone react to this absolutely amazing performance...
One of if not THE best Live Ever !
I see and hear a very good band having a lot of fun and taking their fans with them... very unique sound.
I with ya... just can't keep still. You gotta move.
Utterly spectacular!
Has to be the best live performance of any band.
That is one of the best performances and songs ever ever ever ever ever
One of the greatest songs ever written
Since I first heard this on the radio in 1978 I've been hooked on Dire Straits and MK. All their tunes are great but some take a couple of times listening to appreciate. This one grabs you right from the beginning. I'm 70 and getting old but this never gets old.
62 myself remembering hearing it whenever it first played on the radio like you. Remember thinking at the time what a great tune it was. Little did I know that they would be the soundtrack to my life.
Like the feel of the studio version, but..............THOSE DRUMS!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember back in 1997 was traveling with my family and this song
Came on I fell in love with it
Masters of their craft and arguably one of the world’s best guitarists of all time. The drummer Terry Williams had his dad in the audience this night.
Agree, except you misspelt "unarguably". 😃
@@jjc5407 dont go there.....thats a whole different argument
And..Dont Forget. How Amazing Knopfler plays guitars. SALUT.
So much brilliant beauty in Dire Straits; don't stop here! "Tunnel of Love" is a rich track I strongly recommend.
This is my favorite of this song, that drummer! HOLY expletive! ♥ I love drums and good drummers, this one is excellent.
Saw that show also and Toto was equally awesome
