    For my money, Mark Knopfler is an absolute virtuoso guitarist whose playing is not only world leading, but also so melodic. The melodic nature of his solos makes him standout against his contemporaries. At the time that this video was made, the members of Dire Straits were on the top of their game and on top of the world. This was perfection..

      He's one of those musicians who is so connected to his instrument that he only needs to think a note, and his fingers are just there, without any other input. Just think the note...fingers are already playing it. Then there are the notes he thinks of, and how he puts them together....just sublime. So much finesse

    • @jonathanwyman9402
      @jonathanwyman9402 6 місяців тому +43

      I think the studio version gives the context for how brilliant this live version is. The original is much slower, smoother, and more intelligible (both lyrically and melodically). It was a brilliant song that got enormous radio airtime and created a solid platform from which the live version blasts off. At the time of the concert, the song was an established, Grammy winning hit. The band had been touring heavily for a few years on the back of their big hit single. They were an incredibly tight machine and they (and the song) were evolving beyond the original boundaries. The concert shows them shaking off the doldrums of playing a hit song night after night and launching it into outer space. Much faster, and now packed full of new ideas, the song becomes a roller-coaster for the band, and the audience, to try to ride, holding on for dear life.

      A published record often has the aim to convey the general feeling/vibe. To achieve that, you keep the musical texture lean&efficient, without too much riff raff.
      Added benefit: it also promotes improvisation at live shows. Credit to Mark Knopfler, he is one of the very few who can go as crazy. He reminds me of Chris Thile.

Terry Williams for me would definitely get an honourable mention in this song. He killed the drums in this, and IMHO made one of the greatest impacts (pun intended) on the energy of the song. Thanks for your replies @Chiungalla79 & @MrSparklespring. Mark’s list of musical accomplishments & awards are as long as your arm, and as a longtime diehard MK fan I’m pretty au fait with most of them. Sometimes there’s only time to précis a comment, so yep I did miss a lot out. He did indeed write the score for The Princess Bride, but also for 8 other movies (i.e. 6 x soundtrack albums) He also made 4 collaborative albums, & has worked as a producer and sideman for a countless diverse and impressive range of other artists. You never hear MK blowing his own trumpet, but he’s a national treasure in my book I❤️MK

    Their debut from 1978 contained the studio version only, which is an all-time classic, winning them a Grammy and the album won them Best New Artist, propelling them to stardom. It's much more laid back than the live version, and contained the amazing trademark guitar licks of the great Mark Knopfler, who is also the lead singer, that the band is known for. Well worth you checking it out. Alchemy Live was released in 1984 and to me is one the greatest live albums ever. Whatever you choose from them, live or studio, you can't go wrong.

    My dire straight story.
    It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 p.m. . A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won two tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's "Brothers In Arms" tour show (1986) at the Boston garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no, he looks at me and says would you want to go? I responded in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day. We picked up the tickets at the door. I couldn't believe it They were 6th row center on the floor. I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. His fingers fly, no pick... Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second encore song. It was really a very well done show. I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.
