    My dire straight story.
    It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 p.m. . A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won two tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's "Brothers In Arms" tour show (1986) at the Boston garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no, he looks at me and says would you want to go? I responded in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day. We picked up the tickets at the door. I couldn't believe it They were 6th row center on the floor. I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. His fingers fly, no pick... Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second encore song. It was really a very well done show. I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.

      Except it’s not the best rock song of all time…. That’s by a band called dire straits, and also has the best intro and guitar riff of all time, it’s called money for nothing.
      This band will have to settle for 2nd place….. oh wait.
      Knopfler truly was a virtuoso, and for a period in the 80’s not even Hendrix, Gilmour or Stevie ray could touch him, his ability to connect with everyday life and make a song about moving microwaves and then one of the most emotional beautiful songs of all time (brothers in arms) is just mind blowing.
      These days we get Taylor swift and ed Sheeran releasing a same sounding 3 minute pos every other week,
      Our parents who lived in the 70’s & 80’s had the pinnacle of music. Plus they were all high AF so that helped 😂🤣

      Late 1979. Was in a rock band and we decided we had to do Sultans. Spent many hours trying to do it justice before we played it at an open air concert for around 1500 people. Some didn't understand it because it was so much different than anything they were used to hearing. Seeing this live brought tears to my eyes.What a different time we live in. We were blessed to be the generation of this music.

    Sultans Of Swing was their first hit. I've been a guitar player since I was nine years in 1961. I'm seventy two now and I still play. In all that time very few guitarists ever had, in my opinion that "perfect" tone/sound. Knofler had it. Every note sounds perfect.

    For my money, Mark Knopfler is an absolute virtuoso guitarist whose playing is not only world leading, but also so melodic. The melodic nature of his solos makes him standout against his contemporaries. At the time that this video was made, the members of Dire Straits were on the top of their game and on top of the world. This was perfection..

      @jonathanwyman9402 Рік тому +49

      I think the studio version gives the context for how brilliant this live version is. The original is much slower, smoother, and more intelligible (both lyrically and melodically). It was a brilliant song that got enormous radio airtime and created a solid platform from which the live version blasts off. At the time of the concert, the song was an established, Grammy winning hit. The band had been touring heavily for a few years on the back of their big hit single. They were an incredibly tight machine and they (and the song) were evolving beyond the original boundaries. The concert shows them shaking off the doldrums of playing a hit song night after night and launching it into outer space. Much faster, and now packed full of new ideas, the song becomes a roller-coaster for the band, and the audience, to try to ride, holding on for dear life.

      A published record often has the aim to convey the general feeling/vibe. To achieve that, you keep the musical texture lean&efficient, without too much riff raff.
      Added benefit: it also promotes improvisation at live shows. Credit to Mark Knopfler, he is one of the very few who can go as crazy. He reminds me of Chris Thile.

    I love watching reactions of people who have never experienced this performance. I love your reaction man. It was great Mark Knopfler is just insane on Guitar . He has his own style and it’s just amazing to me. His brother was playing the telecaster next to him. The bass player was greatand the drummer was out of his mind. Unbelievable man and the keyboard player doing the organ and then piano. I have two favorite music videos I’ve ever seen and I’m 71 years old and I’ve seen a lot of music videos. This is one of them I never get tired of them. The other one is well. My guitar gently weeps from a night for George, so it was a tribute to George Harrison after he passed away And Paul McCartney is playing piano on it and harmonizing the way he did on the record and Eric Clapton a singing lead. He got Ringo drumming Billy Preston on organ, George’s son playing guitar, Jeff, Lynn from ELO playing guitar and doing harmony,Albert Lee on Guitar…etc! That is my 2nd favorite video. Check it out! Great Job! You got a like and subscribe from me! You may be too young to recognize the names I just put in there! lol 😂 I’m Grateful to have been alive at the time! 😎

    Their debut from 1978 contained the studio version only, which is an all-time classic, winning them a Grammy and the album won them Best New Artist, propelling them to stardom. It's much more laid back than the live version, and contained the amazing trademark guitar licks of the great Mark Knopfler, who is also the lead singer, that the band is known for.
