Can't go wrong with any performance from the Alchemy album - they're all cast iron bangers. Telegraph Road, Tunnel of Love, and Going Home, which they used to close the concert out are all highlights. Like many of Knopfler's songs it tells a story, about going into a London pub one evening and finding a band playing. The drummer's name is Terry Williams, he absolutely knocked the whole concert out of the park. He was with them for the 85 tour too.

A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won two tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's "Brothers In Arms" tour show (1986) at the Boston garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no, he looks at me and says would you want to go? Their " Brothers In Arms" is so good but his voice is hard to hearin it but his guitar says it all. The group Home Free does a cover of it and the words are so clear but haunting. Both are very good. As a 20 year USAF veteran that song meant a lotto a lot of veterans. Please play it if not for me but for all that has served, no matter which side they were on.

Funfact, dear Ladies, Yes you too Lady Lulu, The drummer´s dad was in the audience for the first time. The drummer got enthusiastic and a tick too fast, (Matk Knopfler and the bass guitarist joked about it). I think the drummer´s dad was realy impressed. You dear and lovely ladies have a safe and pleasant year. Elmar from German
Dire Straits debuted from the UK in 1978 and 'Sultans of Swing' was their first hit single from their self-titled album... They were a seamless fusion of all the classic rock styles, including rock n' roll, blues, jazz, prog... and even country music. Mark Knopfler (vocals/ lead guitar/ songwriting) was they key member and a brilliant guitarist who could play in any style of music... the original Dire Straits included his brother David Knopfler (guitar), John Illsley (bass) and Pick Withers (drums)... however, David Knopfler left the band by 1980 after 2 albums. Dire Straits recorded 2 more albums before drummer Pick Withers left in 1982... This clip was filmed on their 1983 tour for their 4th album 'Love over gold'... At that point, Mark Knopfler and John Illsley had hired all new session members for the tour - Hal Lindes (guitar), Terry Williams (drums) and Alan Clark (keyboards) and released this 1st live album 'Alchemy' in 1984. 'Brothers in arms' in 1985 broke Dire Straits into superstardom w/ the single 'Money for nothing'... and the album sold 9 million copies in the US... However, fame and fortune were too much for Mark Knopfler and after 1 more studio album ('On every street' in 1991) and a live album 'On the night'... he disbanded Dire Straits and carried on from 1996 until today as a solo artist.
You'd have loved seeing them live in person... Live their music always differed from the actual albums with more content but tell ya' what... They get the place JUMPIN! The band had such range of music concerts were funny in that you could tell the standard "rockers" as they'd be in their seats rockin' out... Yet those without as much inhibition who loved the pop/rock stylings be up and dancin' it up. SO MUCH FUN! I'd be havin' ya dancin' it up Kathy!
@@leannmiller7153 yes, I immediately noticed my mistake but I didn't correct it. The physical resemblance and guitar playing of the 1983 Alchemy tour guitarist (Hal Lindes) to David Knopfler (Mark's brother) making me this mistake.
Those jackets with the padding in the shoulders and a loose, unstructured fit were fashionable for both men and women in the 80s and early 90s. Wearing sweat bands to work out was also popular, and Mark (in red) said he started wearing them because it was hot under the lights and they kept the sweat out of his eyes. They became his signature look as long as he was with Dire Straits, but he cut his hair and stopped wearing them when he went solo.
Mark Knopfler wore the sweat band on his head and wrists because he didn't like getting sweat in his eyes or have it running down his arms. I am a 75 yr. old lady and believe he actually had naturally curling hair. Another thing to notice is that he did not use a pick to play the guitar, but his thumb and two fingers. He is self taught. This song was their first hit. They were having so much fun playing and they were such a tight group.

Just stumbled upon your reaction video and I have to agree with many of the comments: this is the best live performance of an amazing song by an amazing band, I have ever seen. Im old, 70 and I grew up on them and all the other fantastic bands of that era. What I also have to say, is that I love your reaction. I especially love mom's? accent. You all seem so genuine and outgoing. Greetings and all the best to you three from Canada.
The best live performance ever!!
I never get tired of it, and I love watching peoples reactions ❤
Absolutely brilliant live band 👍
Thanks for your reaction and the great news is that the encore from the same ALCHEMY Concert in London "TELEGRAPH ROAD" is outstanding. ENJOY
Posting here in April 2024 - Mark Knopfler (red jacket and headband) is 74 years old and still working. He released his latest album this month, and he owns a recording studio in London. He has retired from touring, but he's still composing and recording.
As a live band these were in a class above pretty much most, simply one of the best live concerts of all time
Oh my!!!! Goosebumps, remembering the first time I listened this song. Keep rockin ladies!!!
what a loverly family really enjoyed the vid thank you from the uk
You are so kind
Loved your reaction ladies, and thanks for all the wonderful comments! I was indoctrinated in Toronto in 1978. Anyone who ever saw Dire Straits live NEW they were experiencing something VERY special!
Mark Knopfler, Lead Guitar
Hal Lindes, Rhythm Guitar
John Illsey, Bass Guitar
Terry Williams, Drums
Alan Clark, Keys
And for these shows, guest additional keys, Tommy Mandel.
1983.
Thank you, and Happy New Year
was lucky enough to have seen them back then. they were fantastic
I’m not the biggest fan of Dire Straits but I’d give anything to have witnessed that gig. Superb.
nice one .. UK here. Heard song a million times .. can't stop. You got one of the best guitarists in the world there..
Incredible. That drummer is outstanding. Mark is some player. I love to see the younger generation see a real band. Peace from Belfast city Ireland
Anything from this concert is 🔥 🔥
This is one of the best live performances ever
🤘😊🇫🇮💙🪄🎼✨💯👍
-23° to -45°C here in Finland, but this one heat up ❄️🥶😂
You'd have loved seeing them live in person...
Great band,👍👍👍 look up Tina s through the fire and flame she was only 15 when she covered the song one of greatest female guitar players ever
Kathy you do love your music ❤
Thankyou ladies! Great to hear that again
Thanks for listening
This is pure love.
I had this live version on tape and I drove my parents round the bend listening to it on my stereo 😂😊😊😊
I love that you have watched this version it's simply the the version ❤from 🇬🇧
The drum kit was taken off on a stretcher, immediately after this performance in critical condition. Thankfully , it pulled through.
I would love to see your reactions to the Eagles doing “Take it to the limit” live
Great reaction to an amazing live performance, well done.
Thank you so much!!
not all knows that the other guitarist in the "Alchemy Tour 1983", the man with black t-shirt, is Mark's brother.
David Knopfler left Dire Straits in 1980.
@@leannmiller7153 yes, I immediately noticed my mistake but I didn't correct it. The physical resemblance and guitar playing of the 1983 Alchemy tour guitarist (Hal Lindes) to David Knopfler (Mark's brother) making me this mistake.
Great guitar work awesome solo such a rock classic glad y'all enjoyed this one
Most people have no idea how hard it is to be lead singer and lead guitarist at thesame time.
Awesome concept with the 3 generations.
Great reaction, Mark Knopfler singer and lead guitar, is naturally left handed, but taught himself to play right handed. Checkout Brothers in Arms.
You should also see "Telegraph Road" from the same concert, I think you'll like that song as well.
Amazing wonderful ❤️
What a great channel. Watching from Ireland 🇮🇪
Awesome! Thank you!
