Oh, it's pretty clear that the guitarist won .... THAT BEING SAID Mark is a virtuoso bringing his A+ game and the drumming was awesome on a Keith Moon, Neil Peart level, you don't get many drum/guitar performances that good, ever. My favorite bit is how much Mark is enjoying the kick ass drum performance.
@@theccpisaparasite8813 Well put, and that bassline combined with the drums that night for me was one of the greatest bottom end combinations ever, they just powered that performance all night long, allowing the guitars and keys to just let loose.

@@nihlify Agree with your disagree. Alchemy is the perfection of the song, the studio had imperfections that are completely mastered on this version. most of the time I would agree the studio is better but in this case this is a near flawless live rendition.
The story behind this is Mark Knopfler went to a small club/pub one day and The Sultans Of Swing were playing. Apparently they weren't very good but looked to be enjoying what they were doing. So he wrote this song. The name Dire Straits came from their financial status at the time, or lack there of🤣🤣🤣
Great job, dad! That's how to educate kids. I love seeing the girl enjoing this music. I've heard Sultans of Swing in 1980,for the first time and I became a fan at the very same moment. For some time I didn't actually know what band was playing it. The first song that made huge impact on me. In 1983 I was on their first concert, in 1985 I was on two concerts in 3 days. To me, they're one of m3 most important bands in history.
One of Drummer Terry Williams finest hours ! This concert in particular amongst others certainly showed his talents the guy nailed it to perfection in this concert. Well done Terry proud as always of a fellow citizen of my home City. , Great reaction guys look forward to seeing more .
One of the top 5 live performances in the history of rock 'n roll. The whole "Alchemy" album. It's like a good thick, classic story. Will never be out of fashion like a good classic.
As a Brit, I grew up listening to this song and similar music. My Dad used to play this on the way to school. I used to think he was so embarrassing and un-cool, now, I love it. Nice video guys!
hahahaha!!! me to, my dad used to play it when we went camping down to wales, i know live in Newcastle where Mark Knopfler is from, hes adored up here.
I think Dire Straits are grossly under-appreciated Knopfler is on of the best guitarists of all time but Terry Williams is massively. He really shines in this live version though overlooked
Mark Knopfler is a Beethoven Mozart of modern times and Dire Straits (Mark Knopflers Concert too) are a Classic Concert of modern times. One Instrument tells a Question another answers. Look at "going home" from the motion picture "Local Hero" I Love it
The Recorded Version is beautiful being my Favorite of all time songs in my 70 years of life. The Live performance which is the Long Version is just too awesome to be real, but Truth is before our eyes. They all played a role in this music, so I will not single out any single player yet I do have my unspoken favorite Drummer and Guitarist.
That was a lesson in how to play the fuck out of a set of drums, one of Terry Williams finest performances, an absolute masterclass, nice to see a whole band really enjoying themselves on stage, something not seen enough, a band really at the peak of their abilities

NO... David Gilmour of Pink Floyd is. I am not sure if you ever done this but Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" contains Gilmour's two solos and the later one is regarded by MANY to be the greatest guitar solo ever played in rock's history. Some guys say "Guitars want David Gilmour for Christmas". ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=comfortably+numb
4:44. Did he say 'Santa Clara boys foolin' around in the corner'? I noticed a lot of liberties took with the lyrics on this live version. Good reactions, dad and daughter.
More importantly, Mark Knopfler, the lead guitarist, plays everything-including the incredibly fast and intricate bits of his solos-with his fingers. This allows him to play multiple notes at once, and, also, because he’s playing with ‘more than one pick’, he can play extremely rapid note sequences at high tempos without having to resort to overdriving the amp in order to prevent the notes from petering out before he can play a new one.
a Sultan is another word for King, and dire straights in the late 70s early to mid eighties were the kings of swing in the UK for sure, it could be said mark Knopfler wrote this song as a tribute to every bunch of lads on a cold wet Friday knight in most pubs, living the dream playing there hearts out to the best of their ability, i certainly remember walking into my local pub and playing in the corner was a bunch of local boys banging out this number doing a pretty good job, impressed it was the first time i heard it
Hello,I like your attitude. I would like to point out also that not only is Mark sing and playing those amazing and dreadfully difficult parts, but also he is conducting all that ensamble, changing tempo, styles, so many things happenig for so much time...
Non sono un musicista e nemmeno un'intenditore,ma ho visto il divertimento di tutta la band nel suonare questo capolavoro... è vero erano in competizione per chi suonava meglio,il risultato è stato fantastico.
Dire Straits ARE The Sultans of Swing. Magnificent performance. Try your daughter on Jimi Hendrix. The film performances of Hey Joe, Johnny B Goode (Berkeley), and the Cream tribute on The Lulu Show (all on You Tube) are incredible. The Wind Cries Mary (Stockholm) is additionally another beautifully performed song. Every youngster needs to be introduced to Hendrix to understand why he is called the greatest rock guitarist of all time.
Kool to see a father and daughter team. How did you get your daughter to hang out with you? I am pleasantly impressed. Also good choice of music. I love Dire Straights!!!!!
I'd agree with you on most cases, but this version is probably the best one of the song, and in general the live performances of Sultans of Swing are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the studio version. Mostly because the studio version is way shorter, also was recorded very early on in Dire Straits' existance, drummer was different (and boy you can tell), the guitar solo is much shorter... and let's face it most of what makes this song as legendary as it is are Mark's solos, and the whole instrumental part at the end. The only bad part of watching this before the studio version is that it makes it look bad...when it's phenomenal XDD. A far cry from (most) performers, who're quite worse live than in studio.
Agree with ramjb Mark's extended guitar playing on the live version makes the studio version seem dull in comparison. The live version also accentuates how good the drummer is.
@@roycrosby4941 I see your point but I like studio versions as a frame of reference for alternative versions. Like Enter Sandman. First studio then everything else ☺

1 base (only 4 strings) and 2 guitars one rythim another lead (red blazer) the base is actually part of the percussion group with drums so not a guitar at all cords are way thicker than guitars .

One thing that takes away with first reaction videos is maybe, they should get some context in terms of the artist's history and not just saying they were a british rock band in the 70's. Mark Knopfler is easily in the Top 100 or even top 30 guitarists of all time. That riff has inspired thousands to play the guitar. It could add a lot more context to their discussion. But that's just me, I know that being a "first reaction" must have it's own parameters so that they aren't influenced.
Terry Williams drums himself into the heaven of immortality
One of the rare occasions where the drummer challenges the lead guitar for supremacy, and you can't declare a winner. They're both phenomenal.
