Thank you for covering her. I liked her a lot to. I always wondered what happened to her.
I just recently found out about ' Keep Goin Up ' .... Nelly and Timb are two of the most iconic musical duos of all time....our girls back...yassss queen, yasssss 👑
I knew she was from Canada you can tell by her accent but I didn't know she was Portuguese
Very cool
Imagine being just 20 and having this much clarity on what you want to really do. It's nerve racking how someone so young and so talented had a vision and didn't allow anyone to take that control away. Just the woman all younger kids should look up to.
Most of us 20's had that up to the 2000. The problem is that kids have been dumbed down in the last 20 years. Brainwashing at school, no parenting, no limits, etc. They desire to be little children forever.
Amen! Precisely such a Woman young kids should look up to, and not the trash that's being currently glorified.
@@Willowy13 boomer rhetoric detected
@@Willowy13 Lol, let's not pretend artists weren't getting exploited left, right and centre back in "the good old days"
@@stealthisYou don’t understand the meaning. ;0)
I have so much respect for Nelly, she kept true to herself and refused to let them have control of her and her image. It's no wonder she isn't one of the artists we hear about that is struggling with trauma and drug abuse.
Wow SO much respect!! I had no idea about any of this. She's definitely one of the good ones which seems to be so rare these days...a true artist, intelligent, talented, integral and gorgeous 🤯😍 Not to mention her style was so on point and ahead of her time!! I'm about to go listen to my old Nelly CDs 😆
Makes me wonder where Natasha Beddingfield went… We don’t see her anymore either…
@@thdoggo1 Out of curiosity, I looked her up and I didn't realize she released her fourth album in 2019. I think she was bigger in the UK with her later stuff cuz I didn't hear much from her after unwritten in America.
@@thdoggo1 I believe she does a lot of song writing for other singers if I remember correctly.
@@AshChiCupcak huh, I had no idea she released anything new but I’ll go check it out. Bad timing for a release lol, right as COVID was starting 😭
She used to babysit for me, my daughters loved her to pieces. She's so humble and down to earth. She never accepted a pick up or ride home, until we got home so late the bus was not running. I was surprised to drop her off at a motel in the Gorge area of Victoria, BC. She seemed put off that I gave her a nice raise after that. She was just a regular teen but not so regular in personality...wise beyond her age. We had no idea she sang but we could tell she was a strong personality that would blaze her own trail. Always will be one to send her nothing but love and respect 💖
W😯W!
Wow that is awesome I’m jealous I wanna meet her 😭😭😭
@@followthebluebutterfly Right‼
@@savannahsaenz3773 Awee💖 We would love to meet her again as well. Memorable teenager ♥️ one of very few sitters who cleaned, not just tidy toys...she did dishes, floors, laundry, etc‼) while the kids napped or were in bed AND stayed awake until an adult got home. I bet she's a super mom💖
Yooo Victoria BC crew
This album will forever be apart of my 16yo heart. She, Gwen Stefani, and Fergie ruled the mid-00s
YASSSSSS, I’m 35, this video was so nostalgic for me. I thought her and Gwen were the coolest things I’d ever seen. Very much was empowered by them❤❤❤
Same here and 35 also. I remember buying Loose on my HS graduation day 🎉
HELL YA
36 and yep ❤🎉
TELL ITTTTTTT👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
“All Good Things Come To An End” and “Say It Right” were absolute pop masterpieces. 2007 was a good year.
Im like a bird!! Dont forget that piece!
i still occasionally listen to say it right. it was an integral piece of my growing up
Don't forget Promiscuous, Maneater and Give It To Me with Timbaland and JT
Always turned off the album before All Good Things...discovered it like seven years after Loose was released. Now it's my favorite of hers.
That album had BOPS
she released like 4 historical bops with timbaland then dipped 😳
Yeah promiscuous was such a bop! I didn't even know what that word meant when the song came out 😂 but I would sing it alllll the time! The harmonies in that song are still 🔥🔥
it wasn't the first time she did the same thing after her first hit with I'm like a bird
Noooooo, she was iconic far before that! But most younger people wouldn't know about her earlier stuff like Turn Off The Light (absolute bop)
Yep. Twas giving very Lauryn Hill iconic energy.
Her first was a hit, second was a flop and her 3rd album was a hit. And then done
Im an elder millennial and was introduced to Nelly by her debut album, Whoa, Nelly! I still listen to the album regularly - it was SO ahead of it’s time, so experimental and unique.
I went to her concert at that time!
Loooove her!! & that “Whoa Nelly” album was EVERYTHING! 🤩😎💯💪🏽💋⚖️🤓
Agreed. That album is ( still ) in my list of top 10 favorites of all time 🎧😌
@@jjthejet8447 me too! In DC!
I remember my boomer mom loving the album too at the time
It’s nice to know that she was clearly a musician that didn’t get absorbed into the toxicity of the industry
She "vanished" on her own terms and not because of musical failure, drug or substance abuse, depression et al.....she was in control of her own destiny and that was the road she chose....good on her.
She did have some lyrics that hinted at depression. Or anxiety or disillusionment or something. But she also seems super normal.
I know right?if anything she's a story of sucess, kinda hate how even here the narrative is that she vanished but the true is that nelly doest Owe anybody.
@@ct6852 'normal' ppl suffer from depression/anxiety etc.
@@roblo8188 Aware.
I liked some of her songs, will go and check out some more. But honestly, she deserves so much respect: the girl showed up, made some history and then got out to live her life in peace. Iconic.
Here's a like for all the punctuation.
@@everydayistheworstday1237 thanks mate, I'm not a native speaker so you have no idea how validated this made me feel.
@@justwonder1404haha cute…the validation part.
Her album Mi Plan is sublime! I used to play a lot while driving. You dont have to speak spanish to love it. Has a beautifully haunting duet with Josh Grobin, Silencio I adore , and some real bangers as well. She is a true versatile artist
She "vanished" for a reason. She wanted to raise her daughter in peace.
I'm slowly realising every single woman I looked up to as a kid was doomed just by being a talented person in this cutthroat money obsessed world
Dude it’s so heartbreaking
This woman was savvy and savage. A success on her own terms 🎉❤
@@caravanroseshe is recording a new album
"Vanish" is just another word for living peacefully.
I still remember her first hit “I’m like a bird” SO clearly…..I remember watching the video on MTV and feeling so intrigued with her natural beauty and vibe ❤ I could always tell she was gonna go far, but I could also tell she was UNIQUE.
I'm surprised that "Turn off the lights" and "Say it Right" weren't mentioned during the video. Those two, to this day, are some of her most iconic songs. I actually knew about her because of TOTL and for me, it was a rollercoaster from there. Say it right it's so iconic that it was even trending on tiktok not too long ago. I listen to her songs to this day and I'm so glad that she is doing what she loves the way she loves it.
My two favorites of her❤
Say it right gives me goosebumps because it makes me feel my youth again lol
Say It Right is my favourite.
Say it right is one of my favourite songs ever by any artist
Exactly!!!
I had no idea how multi talented she was. Not just a pop star ⭐️
She was a huge success here in Brazil, her songs play daily on the radio she’s even done a version of All good things (come to an end) with a Brazilian pop-rock singer. Hopefully she’s coming back soon.
Como podem ter ignorado o maravilhoso "the spirit indestructible"? Não entendo pq não emplacou...
She was huge EVERYWHERE! I live in Finland and her songs were all over the radio, tv, night clubs, just everywhere.. So many great memories!
I always knew she was unique but I never knew why, thank you for the deep dive into her career.
I really liked her folklore album. I felt the Timbaland stuff took away from what made her unique and molded her into the typical slutty popstar
Promiscuous was my JAM!!! The chemistry between her n' Tim oozed from the speakers. Such a great dance track
She’s my 7th grade teachers cousin and he brought her to our class. It was awesome. She’s a really sweet person and my view of her as a celebrity changed after that
Love her so much, I remember growing up in Ecuador and the song "Fotografia" with Juanes being a huge collab she did in Latin America. She really is loved all over the world.
Yes!!
I learned this song in my high school Spanish class! It gets stuck in my head to this day 😂 Truly a bop.
Manos al Aire 💯
Te busqué is a good one too!❤
Wasn't she Portuguese heritage? Did she sing in Spanish too?
Her album "whoa nelly" will forever be the soundtrack of some of my happiest childhood memories ❤️my mum was in her 20s in the 90s singing loudly to her songs while doing chores with us kids❤️
omg i cried watching this and im not even her biggest fan or anything, im just so happy that shes able to do whatever she wants beyond fame and commercial success
The magical summer of 2007 where Nelly had a pop career that challenged the likes of Xtina, Britney and Madonna, and we were absolutely FERAL about her in Canada - I was an emo kid and even *I* wasn't immune to the perfection that is 'Loose'.
It's nice that for once the reason a superstar 'vanished' is just that she didn't see herself doing this forever and bowed out just when her career started to slow down. No fuss, no drama, no secret battle with addiction, abuse, or anything. Just wanted to raise her kid in peace and chillax.
Amen to this episode. As a tween (twelve years old) at the time, I became a Nelly fan as I was introduced to her through Loose and it's still one of my favorite pop albums.
It's unfortunate that her career didn't stabilize in the public eye after her huge success during the Loose era, but she's a very creative artist and able to do a variety of styles. I also have enjoyed her Folklore album and a few of her post-Loose releases.
Manos al aire was a HIT in Latin America
Explode from Folklore is still one of my favourite songs.
She’s better off not being apart of this crazy media world.
I know that she got married and they divorced amicably. If I’m not mistaken she ended up having two more kids.
I ain’t worried about Nelly and she’ll always be my girl 💜💐✨
LOVED FOLKLORE
"Showtime" is still one of my favourite songs of hers. She's very talented
You have no idea how much I adore her. The “Folklore” album helped me get me through college. Thank you for making this introspective video on her career thus far.
Try is such a great song!
Try still is one of my favorite pop songs of all time
As a millennial, I've spent my teens/early twenties listening to her iconic songs, and still am to this day. She will always be one of my favourite artists, all the love and respect to her
Nelly was my fave growing up..saw her in concert 3 x, first at the Area One Festival with Moby in 2001 ( with Outkast, Incubus and The Roots...to this day one of the best experiences of my entire life ) then in Orlando 2 years later....and Mayfair in PA a few years after that. Even got my cd jacket autographed after her Orlando show ( she is so generous she stayed for I don't know how long just signing things fans were throwing up on the stage for her ...someone threw a ' mini' Portuguese flag for her to sign and it actually nearly hit her in the head , instead of being annoyed she laughed. I loved how she wanted to mix being grounded with her fame and success. In The Superficial entertainment industry she is a rare gem.💎( by the way I love your new Channel with ' That Surprise Witness'! )
Thank you so much for watching the new channel. Ahhhh I’m so jealous that must have been an incredible experience. She is truly a gem in this world 🥰
I went to that same festival but different location 😂
@@Living42 it was at the Tweeter center in Phily/ Camden
Damn, Nelly, Incubus, OutKast and The Roots?? I'm sure that was one hell of a show!
@@dani.fleur9186 yes, it was epic !
YOU KILLED THIS, SIS!!! Her story needed to be told. As one of those millennials that bought the CD! 😆 this was so beautifully done!
She was my best friends cousin growing up, she also went to the same high school I did. Her family was not the type to be consumed by fame and that's awesome to me
I wish her "Folklore" and "The Spirit Indestructible" albums got more support and mainstream attention
Folklore was a masterpiece
Big Hoops is a bop. Too experimental at the time for mainstream success tho
Folklore was sold Few milion Times . It was actually a Hit .
These are arguably her best albums 👀
That album is so freaking important to this day. Gives me goosebumps each time I listen to it to this day!! Loose was absolutely perfectly crafted!!
I served her at work in 2015. She's just living in Toronto being a mom
I love that for her
As a Canadian, I super appreciate this deep dive! I was just wondering about her the other day.
One of my favorite memories of my now 27yr old son... Who would have been about 4 at the time...
He would sit it the backseat of our car as I drove him to school... He would sing at the top of his voice "I'M LIKE A BIRD... I'LL ONLY FLY AWAY!"
I didn't really love the song but my sweet little boy did.
I'll always have a special place in my heart for that song and knowing the backstory is cool.
I was just boppin to Promiscuous the other day and that song still slaps 17 years later 😌
I was cutting my cd collection in half and listened to Whoah Nelly in its entirety and was still blown away by her voice and songwriting. Deef a keeper😘
Give them to charity! ❤
My brother who passed away in 2010 used to love the song why do all good things come to an end. Only when he passed I understood exactly what he was singing about. Love you Nelly, the world needs more people like you. ❤❤❤
I remember when I'm Like a Bird came out and it was like a breath of fresh air after hearing a lot of over saturated pop, hip hop and rnb on the radio. And don't get me started on Loose. So many bangers on that album. I actually never really listened to the lyrics to the song Say it Right until very recently. I was just sitting in my room jamming out to it and then I heard her say "i can show you a place, only god knows. you should know, this space is holy. do you really want to go?" and I was kinda floored because that's some real deep songwriting for a pop song. Spirituality, sensuality and poetic double meanings? She definitely operates on a different frequency.
I wrote Nelly Furtado once a poem about Nevis, the Island. A friend of mine who was her stage director gave it to her. Im so glad she got it! 💜
As a Canadian I really loved the coverage of Nelly, she was such a hit here and I can see her coming back if Shania did too! If she does I can't wait to hear what she brings
Nelly is Canadian so that's why she was super popular here.
@@montanarose2148 yes I know how the CRTC works and how we are required to have Canadian artists playing. It’s the reason we know so many Canadian bands that the states have no idea about.
Huh? They're two entirely diff ppl!!
In the meantime you can enjoy listening to Justin Bieber and Justin Trudeau instead.
@kel8026 or Ryan Reynolds and Ryan Gosling 😂
I was at Nelly’s 2007 concert in Victoria BC. I never met her directly but growing up there I knew who she was because I was the same age. I took my daughter to that concert. It was an emotional concert for ALL of us. Not just Nelly. I get goosebumps even thinking about it. I cried with her! I cried for all of the little girls that were screaming at the top of their lungs for a woman I grew up hoping would make it big and she did! I stood there looking around in almost disbelief but yet not. It’s hard to explain.❤ What is easy to say though is… She was an absolute inspiration for all of us and to see my daughter screaming I love you Nelly!! at a packed wall to wall concert in our new Arena! It was more than us or Nelly I am sure could have ever dreamed. It was EMOTIONAL! Cheers Nelly!! To my home girl!!! We owe you the Sooke Pot holes and SOOOO much more. ALOT of us who knew or knew of Nelly cried when she came to perform in Victoria. It was all of our moments and we all missed her desperately though. 😢We missed ourselves and a time passed or almost passed. Not gone but that was passing quickly. I don’t blame her one bit for coming home. You don’t know unless you know that time and place. It was magical.
♥️💘
Always obsessed with these Deep Dives! I so appreciate this content ❤
Same. Always coming with a story I didn't know I wanted to hear about😹💟
I loved Nelly back in the day, still love her stuff. I never realized she fought to keep her style especially as that style was a style at all started to like back in those late 90s, the baggy pants, the kind of tomboyish with a girly touch. Look up any old Delia's catalogs and you'd see that style a lot. So it was refreshing to see someone looking amazing but dressing like us, compared to the Britneys, Christina's, and Jessica Simpson's famous at that time
Everything about this comment is 🎯...i also loved Delia's catalogs lol. and yes Nelly was heavily influenced by 90s R&B and one of my favorite girl groups at the time TLC...she even did a mini '90s medley' in the middle of her concert with her backup dancers that included excerpts of songs from TLC salt-and-pepper and BBD!
I loved that a lot as a tween and then got a bit bummed with her image during the Timbaland era...
@@gpgp1841 There was nothing wrong with her Timbaland era look. She was sexy in a good way.
I’m like a bird has a bitter sweet spot in my heart. I remember sitting on the school bus with my friend Natasha, listening to my discman with Nelly’s CD in it, Natasha with one ear bud and me with the other annoying everyone else around us as we sang along. … 11 years later that same friend was taken from the world in a horrible and graphic murder. … when I hear it, it makes me think of her… and I smile, and I cry.
So sorry for your loss
She dueted with James Morrison on his song Broken Strings... it's an absolutely tremendous song!! She is amazing on it
My favourite Nelly Furtado albums:
1: Folklore (a masterpiece)
2: The Spirit Indestructible (a second-best masterpiece)
3: The Ride (a little strange in places, but really beautiful)
4: Whoa, Nelly! (very unique and ahead of it's time)
5: Mi Plan (I like most of the songs, even though I don't understand a word of Spanish)
6: Loose (I like some songs but I never liked Timbaland's production, which there is a lot of)
i'm 33yo and i grew up listening to nelly furtado, i loved her songs - this video was so beautifully done, it made me cry! she is a true artist - one of those we dont get to see anymore -
Wow this was my favorite episode you’ve ever made. Absolutely spellbinding. ❤ I didn’t know 99% of her story!
Amazing! I always learn so much from your deep dives! I had no idea she had children! 😅 She has such a unique voice. I hope she releases something again in the future ❤
Nelly Furtado had a huge impact on me, as a teenage girl growing up in Vancouver, BC. Not only was she a local, she embraced and celebrated her ethnicity, which was incredibly powerful for me as the child of Greek immigrants. In that era, there was very little diversity in pop culture beyond blonde and hypersexual, and the world was always telling me I wasn't pretty. THANK YOU NELLY FOR SHOWING ME THE WAY!
My heart jumped into my throat as soon as I saw the title!!! So excited!!!
The editing on these videos is top tier, almost cinematic. ❤
These documentaries you do are EXCELLENT 🙌🏼
"Loose" came out the summer before 10th grade for me. It was the most played album on my iPod lol but loose was so ahead of its time. "I'll wait for you" "do it like you do it to me" "in gods hands" and especially "Promiscuous" and "Man-eater" and "Say it right" I love Nelly!! So much. I still listen to loose today Especially every summer 🌞
What’s crazy is that I been thinking about this for a really long time & been meaning to research to what happened Nelly is iconic. It’s like the Internet read my mind…

I love this. Say it right was legit my fave song as a kid. I had it on repeat.
Love Love Love Nelly Furtado. I had her first CD before they even played it on the US radio stations or MTV. She definitely is one of a kind.
I was 5 years old when I first listened to Whoa Nelly! because of my mom, earliest memories I have are her and I singing I'm Like A Bird, Turn Off The Light etc. My mom passed 5 years ago and Nelly 's songs bring both bittersweet memories and happiness , But also a huge part of my childhood. Thank you Nelly for bringing happiness to me and my mom :)
This is what britney wanted to do, and her family refused to let her.
Last time I saw her was on Lido Pimienta's show on CBS, and it brought joy to see her being supportive of underground Latin musicians, and a fun kid's show at that
I just made a Timbaland playlist last night and of course she’s on there like 4 times, so perfect timing 😂
All I can say is keep up the awesome work 👍🤗🍀
I went to see Nelly in 2002 in Norfolk, VA. Timberland is from that area and towards the end of the show, he came out and jammed with her!! Still gives me goosebumps thinking about it! I was a junior in high school and it was the most special experience; I’ll cherish those memories forever!
Folklore was such a beautiful album. My favourite song on that is Try, which I really related to. It helped me through some tough times.
What a breath of fresh air, she's so genuine and true to herself, she's the kind of person that could succeed at any genre she'd choose to do because she's doing it with passion to her craft, it's so cool how she's taken all over the world in different regions
Heylin C. Absolutely! Nelly came into Hollywodd then left, then went to Latin America then left, and raised her child (I guess) on her own or with help from her parents. But she is back to songwriting. Nelly and many other independent artists are incredible. I have so much respect for them!
If she were to release another album in the future I would buy it. I have Nelly and a few other independent-recording artists on alert 'cause I subscribed to their mailing lists. 🎶 🎶 💕 💕

She was popular in the early 2000s. With "Like a Bird", but became bigger after Timbaland produced her album in the mid aughts. She had hits around the same time as 'N SYNC, and BSB. I remember watching her on TRL around the age of 12.
This was great coverage on Nelly. Thank you so much for sharing.!
Oh yay. I was at the concert right in front! I was soooooo excited to see her. It was a short performance but lovely. Everyone was so surprised to see her. This was one of the best concerts I’ve attended. Shout out to Drake for making this an amazing night.😊
Can’t waaaaiiittttt! I wished her later work was also appreciated! I love “Big Hoops” and “Spirit Indestructible”!
Yessss I love Spirit Indestructible!!!
This is epic. thank you for creating a space for us to celebrate our strong role models!!
Im from Australia but happened to live in Europe the year Folklore was released and it was one of the biggest albums out. I’m so grateful because to this day it’s still one of my favourites and I love it’s “maturity” which was criticised, it gave young girls like me hope that we can be respected as a woman with a mind and not just heard if we sell our body.
I'm really glad that she was able to just rude off into the sunset. There are so many tragic stories in the industry, especially with female artists, so it's nice that she was able to do everything on her terms
I'm not of Portuguese or Azorean ancestry, but I lived in the Azores as an American kid for two years in the 70s and that experience had a huge, life-changing impact on me -- in a positive way. I went on to study Portuguese (Brazilian), and even now after all of these years, the time I spent as a kid living on Terceira island is a special time for me. When I first saw Nellie's video for her song "I'm like a bird," with the Azorean flag in the background, I totally got the inside reference. The Azores islands are named after a falcon, the Azor (Acor). Nellie's best song references that, and she's telling the world that she's from the Azores. I get it. I love it. You rock.
Nellie - you gave the Azores its own English language anthem. Not bad! Com muito amor e um grande abraco!
AYEEE GURL, you portuguese too?! we really are everywhere! haha, I'm so happy you covered her because she was the first celebrity I identified with. Great vid!!
Yesss 🇵🇹 Whenever I listened to Nelly when I was a kid my grandma would be like “You know she’s Portuguese too” hahah
Very well put together video!! Bravo 👏🏽
I was listening to Joey Diaz talk about touring and getting to the point of having to just say no because he was so fried. People have to protect themselves or they'll lose themselves in so many situations in life and some people die early because they're swept up in a whirlwind and pulled in every direction instead of making it all stop. Her kid saved her life. I am so glad I watched this and I have so much major respect for her. She's too real for Hollywood, and back then she was definitely too smart for their liking, and her morals and integrity probably got in the way. Love her!
LOVED this. Great memories. I wore the Loose CD out.
Thank you so much for this. ❤
