I was thinking the same thing. Whoever’s teaching their kids that ANYONE should be perfect needs to reevaluate. It’s just going to lead to your own kids feeling like they can never make mistakes either, just like Joe Jonas said from hearing the important people around him talking down on Vanessa. Plus in my opinion Vanessa didn’t even make a mistake, she felt safe enough to take those photos and sadly was taken advantage of by the way worse person in the situation.
Never forget how Megan Fox stood up for Vanessa at the time, saying she should never have to apologise for someone stealing and selling her pictures and "I hate Disney for making her do that... fuck Disney".

I was a HUGE HSM fan as a kid, and I remember seeing the leaked pics, being like "ok" and just moving on. Nothing about Vanessa's image changed to me. I was around 8, 9 years old at the time.

Adults obsessed with naked teens (adult or no, 18 is a teen) is such a gross and weird part of the past. I remember when all these things happened and its wild WILD to look back on it now. She was a KID.
Omg I turned 13 in 2006, and so I was only 4 years younger than Vanessa. We all basically grew up together. I remember being devastated by how fixated the media was on the exploitation of young children, specifically girls. I was a victim of SA at 15 and I remember how much I was blamed for the actions of a 19 year old. There was very little - if any - support for us and it's so unfortunate that these victims are forced to apologize for the actions of their oppressors. It's abysmal.

And for the first possibility, even though it’s wrong to think like that, unfortunately it’s normal for girls, even now in 2022, to feel shame when they expose even a bit of their bodies, and feeling the need to hide because they are told over and over again that women’s bodies are nothing but sexually appealing objects in the eyes of men. I’ll never blame women, especially those who were born in the early 2000s, for believing something that the majority of women were brainwashed to believe. It’s only later in life that you actually realise how dehumanising it is.

The other thing that gets me is the fact that they accused her of taking the photos in recent time. I’m talking about the first time the photos got out. When in reality, they were too dumb to look into WHEN the photos were actually taken. And when someone actually did, it turned out to be when she was still a minor 😂 so it makes them judging her for it all the more fucked up. I mean you’re literally shaming a CHILD. I honestly think the reason they shamed her for it so harshly without taking into account the fact that not only was she a minor when the photos were taken, but they were also LEAKED, is because of the ignorance surrounding how the internet works back then. It was still very new in 2007 and was just starting to become mainstream. I don’t think people knew it was possible for images to be stolen and used for exploitation purposes. They thought she posted or sent them somewhere for everyone to look at it. Personally, I don’t think it was ever anyone’s business what she chose to do with her own body, ESPECIALLY when you take into consideration that she was a minor. The real issue here was always the fact that someone wanted to exploit her on purpose. And these idiots from the 2000s were way too blind and ignorant to see that.

As someone who was part of the demographic these parents were oh, so worried about being poorly influenced by these "scandals", I can confirm that the only thing I learned was that being a victim of sexual assault would somehow always be my own fault in the eyes of the public.

i thought the same thing!! i could feel myself like physically tensing up and bracing myself and it wasn’t even like a conscious thing and i was just waiting for them to say something that would make me cringe/uncomfortable but i was pleasantly surprised. good on him for teaching her that and for raising her in a way that allowed her to have such a mature outlook at such a young age.

Miley has always been mature and many interviews with BR in the past have shown he’s all about lifting people up. I wasn’t surprised but I was still pleased. I remember this scandal like it was yesterday. I was 15 years old. Looking back at this story now as an adult, I couldn’t imagine the trauma she went through at such a young age.
I was 17….around the same age as her at the time. While I wasn’t a huge fan of HSM, I do feel bad for what she and many others went though.

People own Vanessa a huge apology. It was a nightmare being her fan during that time, not because we were listening absurd things about her everywhere, but we saw how much she was suffering. I remember checking forums and websites every week and there she was going to therapy again. Secutiry guards, never alone, no smiles, no usual happy dances... Nothing. She was a puppy. It was consuming her and we were just watching it. And all this while WE were also growing up, it was a mess and they handle it very poorly.

It was incredibly toxic and it was SO NORMALIZED. What happened to Vanessa is disgusting! It happened to so many girls back in the day. Reflecting on the norms/standards of the late 00s and early 10s presented in this video, makes me understand why so many girls who grew up in those times went through some really horrible things, and at the hands of teenage boys who felt entitled to violate us.

I was gonna comment on that. It angers me how he's statement is like subtly encouraging Ashley to laugh at Vanessa when really she's just uncomfortable. There is nothing comfortable about it - about the question and about what happened to Vanessa. Being her co -star, she probably felt like she might become the next victim of something and probably is very much afraid. Smh.

They can't be as blatant about it in the media these days, but in real life girls STILL have to watch their own backs just as much as they always have. For every five guys you meet, at least one of them sees you as an object put on this earth to take care of a man's needs. We STILL have to be teaching our daughters the tips for staying safe, and reminding them to be vigilant and to listen to their instincts when they're feeling uncomfortable. First time watching a video from the channel, I was super impressed by the editing! The content was great too, very eye opening.
Ashley being completely uncomfortable and being told “be comfortable” was so chilling. Everyone treated her so awfully. She was barely an adult! And a lot of those photos were just her trying to be cute and weren’t racy at all. And comments saying she needed this scandal because she was squeaky clean? People are disgusting. This wasn’t even that long ago, but it feels like public perception to these types of things has changed a lot.
In 2007 I was 14 and my bf was 17. He sent a p*rn video of us to everyone In the school and they sent it to everyone in theirs. It ruined my life at the time and this was the culture back then. I'll never forget growing up with all of this going on.. my mom trying to tell me to stop watching and listing to Vanessa, Hillary, Miley.. & honestly most of the Disney stars and being so confused... reading the popstar magazines w/ them talking about all the nice things about them but then seeing the bad headlines coming in on the tv. It is so disgusting seeing how the media treated her. She was freshly 18! I was around 9 when those photos first leaked and then I was around 10 when HSM3 came out, but I do recall bits and pieces of that time period. As a kid, I viewed her being much older than 18. It's insane to now realize and see that the media was being so nasty to a damn teen! I remember thinking back then that she didn't do anything wrong and why the hell were people mad at HER for these PRIVATE photos?? I guess that just really shows you how Hollywood was back in 2008. It's so sad. It's so weird to view this time period as an adult now. I'm almost 24 and I just cannot believe society really treated her so poorly. I have never seen that interview where Miley speaks about the situation. It's really nice to hear her being so supportive. In all of these stories I find myself now in 2023 shocked at how these GIRLS were treated. I’m screaming at screen, “The teenaged Miley Cyrus isn’t to blame here. The photographer and her parents are!” Funny how time can make things so clear.
The nude photo leaks was a thing that started happening around that time, not just to celebrities but also to real girls that I knew. So when it happened, I just felt really bad. Role model or not, it was meant to be private. I remember at the time Zac Efron was in Australia promoting Hairspray (I was a huge Zac fan and was excited that he was in my country haha) and right when it happened she flew to Australia and they were spotted at McDonald’s together. I think he must have been a big support for her during that hard time.

Women full adulthood is age 25. So she was a young lady not a woman yet. Look on google that what I did. The leak photos that happened were said to have been from when she was 17 so at that age she was a minor.

It's "wrong" because she was underage. I think a lot of people are confused about how the law works but legally speaking she could have gotten into a lot of trouble if she wasn't famous.
Even though they were pictures she took of herself, she was still guilty of distributing child p0rn0graphy because she herself was legally a child at the time. If the person is underage then it is illegal to take and distribute whether they consent to it being taken or not.
I think sending nudes has become so common that people don't think much of it but it's techniquely illegal to do if you're a minor doing it.
