Some time ago there was an artist rebellion against t-shirt bots. Artists would post "art" saying "This website steals art" or something similar, and the replies would intentionally lure the bots so that a shirt would get made out of it. Sometimes artists would even do this with Disney characters in an effort to get the "shops" shut down altogether since Disney copyright is so strict. Few communities on Twitter unite more than artists who got fucked over.
I once complained about my college finals on Twitter and got someone saying they could write my essays for me. I politely replied “no thanks” and they dm’d me calling me a fat b*tch and telling me to die and then blocked me. Yeah, definitely want this person to do my homework.
My favorite response with the t-shirt problem (this was a little while ago) was people making images with clearly trademarked or copyrighted characters (The Mouse was a favorite) having responders request to have it made as a shirt. Thus, the bots autoflag it, put it on their website in seconds, and respond. So Disney, owner of Mouse can go after them and Twitter/actual trademark upholders are forced to respond because it is a Big Corporation instead of a teeny tiny independent artist begging for follows and likes.
I've manually printed shirts for a living for decades, since the shirt bots have taken over the internet, small unknown's like my studio end up even more unknown. Hard to compete with thousands of POD bots screaming loudest.

along the same lines as the homework bots, sugar daddy bots... if you make a tweet joking about or otherwise referencing sugar daddies in any way you'll get 12 replies asking you to dm. i can't prove they're bots but like, it happens way too quickly not to be

I don't have a Twitter, but t-shirt bots are a big problem on Reddit too. The ones I've seen usually post fandom-specific designs in their respective subreddits. People in the comments are usually wise to it (aside from the reply bots obviously), but I'm sure there's always somebody that actually wants the shirt and ends up getting scammed.
Yup, I'm a mod of a tiny sub yet still we get shirt bots. We've had to switch to approving every thread now so have no idea how way larger subs deal with this. I'm a designer myself but purposefully do mockups that are way harder to replicate for a POD bot....or even a POD shop ergo the reason why my mockups stay as mockups 😅😭😅😭
I used to work for a company that made decals for souvenir T-shirts, primarily for boardwalks in NJ and Florida. and I can confirm that even that component was unethically sourced, me and my coworkers were underpaid over worked and had to put up with a ton of verbal and psychological abuse, meanwhile in the back the actual printers were also overworked incompetently directed and there were numerous OSHA violations good times
I bet the shirts are made with the scratchest polyester fabric known to man. Worse than your nan's Christmas sweaters, worse than that one blanket that your friend gives you when you go sleep over, worse than a shirt mad of cat hair. Can't wait to see these shirts clogging up the local Goodwills within the next few months, they'll probably just get tossed in the bin with all the Shein clothing.
ShirtsThatGoHard seems to have been getting better and better about linking the actual creators in their replies, like with the Warthog shirt, though it does still get swamped in the replies and you've got to go hunting for it. Funnily enough, I got like three or four bots pinging me after quote-tweeting about needing that exact shirt. The other bot problem I didn't have for the longest time til Elon took over were fake erotic accounts following me, now I gotta block like five a day at least. I keep my DMs closed, thankfully, so I can only wonder how much worse it could be.

It only makes the problem worse because it causes small businesses who make actual original designs to struggle. Working at that company, there were countless times I heard my boss complaining about other people online stealing their designs and having to issue take down notices.
"Shirts that Go Hard" is a scam site. I tried to order two different shirts from them a few months ago. I received two copies of the same shirt, and when i tried to contact them to return one, they literally told me to go fuck myself.
This whole thing feels like the game that goes: "you should go right, also the person above me is telling the truth", but plot twist they're all bots and they're all lying.

I had a friend with a nearly identical one from tripping into a winch on a sailboat and another who got a similar one from falling face first into a metal trough while flying a kite. This specific genre of scar seems to only exist with seemingly dumb accidents and I love that.

I've noticed a huge uptick of this same problem on Facebook over the last couple of years. My targeted ads are 80% shirts with stolen artwork or very obvious AI-generated images being framed as actual products. And it's no use reporting them since Facebook doesn't do shit. All I can do is hide them, or comment on the link with "this art is stolen/this product doesn't exist" and hope someone sees it and is warned away before the comment inevitably gets deleted. It's exhausting.

print on demand CAN be made of eco friendly materials, and its way better for the planet than places that mass produce ugly shirts that don't get sold. it's actually incredibly common for sites to advertise with doctored photos but it doesnt necessarily mean that the product isn't real. other than that, art theft is bad, but if someone wants to design something original based on a meme thats already popular... idrc about something like that

I for one can't be happier to see Twitter crash and burn, considering how many anxiety attacks it's caused me. At least on Reddit, it's relatively easy to avoid triggering content if you know where it is. On Twitter, that shit's just everywhere. Good riddance.

This so much, as someone who commissions a lot of art I now basically just ask artists for their discord or just use artists who are on Pillowfort

You can curate your Reddit experience, but on Twitter I pretty much only ever saw things that were upsetting.
