I have been looking into making my own bag as well. I made a make shift one using a leather handbag I had in the garage, I placed a 10 pound weight inside of it and for now it's working quite well. I also looked online and it seems you can purchase them for between 25 and 50 dollars
Hitting with the circular palm strike or palm strike, don't hit your bag with the fingers this can hurt and damage the fingers when you strike the bearings , this is because we don strike with the fingers when we palm strike so we don't require to hit the bag with the fingers as it serves no purpose, ensure you follow what master lee does, he strikes the bag with his fingers over hanging the side of the bag to prevent any damage.
My sifu, Grandmaster Wolf, lived with Lawrence and trained with Lawrence's father many, many years ago before becoming a Taoist monk in the Hunan province. He is now a grandmaster and teaches iron palm and iron fist in Tasmania.
There's another guy I subscribe to that is very good at this. Even though I'm an old man of 59, I should start to do this lightly. It is very new to me. My focus has been on studying speed and getting my reaction times to their peak with an invention I have. But I will put a bit of iron palm into my traing. What can it "hurt"? :) Thanks.
This is a good video. David, Lee says NOT to hit the fingers because the joints can be damaged, yet he says to hit the bag with a phoneix eye fist where the knuckle/joint is making contact... Whats the difference? Thanks.
@GetDamage Lawrence started his iron palm around 15 years of age and he is now 63 years old, his hands and legs are like steal amour plates, if you kick his thighs with a round house kick you will seriously hurt yourself, or receive a strike from his shins or hands your in serious trouble, you will be hospitalized with internal injuries and severe damage .
it is certainly possible. That is why, you move up the intensity gradually. Also, some medicinal oils are traditionally applied to keep the hands safe. One famous one is dit da jow.
Hi Deniel, The answer to your question is that the flange joints on your fingers(palm) are not strong as the knuckle and are susceptible to damage if striking the bag to hard.the fingers when straight are at the weakest point and dont havex a strong structure where as when training the 2nd joint knuckles you have structure by aligning the knuckles with the wrist joint in a straight line which makes it very strong. Think of the pheonix as a spear attachment of a punch and has a deep impact and penetrates deeply when you strike which goes internal. Thanks David
This is very good information, as most online seems to be total bollocks...I tried to go to the website but nothing came up...I was wondering if I could get some correspondence going on with lawrence and your school...I miss training at a gungfu centre and would love to know about your liniment. PM me please. Ck
you don't slam away at the bag ,hitting the iron bag is done gradually building up your pain threshold until you can strike the bag harder without to much concern but technique is very important when hitting the bag to prevent damaging your hands
As Master lee has passed away Anyone in Australia who wishes to pay their respects to Master Lawrence Lee can do so, the funeral will be held at 12.00 PM at the northern suburbs crematorium in the north chapel on Friday the 13th July 199 Delhi Rd Nth Ryde Sydney., if you need more information or wish to send a message to the family can do so ,please email me : David (instructor in TCS) : davidsouth63@gmail.com
I wonder if after long term practice with this technique if you notice any loss of delicate hand and finger skills? Is it difficult to thread a needle?
+traderjoes - If your training is done properly there will be no damage to your hands. You can look up Master James McNeal - Wing Lam - Brian Grey and Tak Wah Eng if you want more in depth information. Also see if you can locate some issues of "Inside Kung Fu". The magazine no longer exists as Inside Kung Fu because the company jumped onto the MMA bandwagon and prints under a differant name now. One issue I HIGHLY recommend is the April 2004 issue of Inside Kung Fu.. This issue is a REAL TREASURE... You will not be dissapointed with that one..
The backhand strike on the iron bag is for conditioning the back of the hand to withstand accidental strikes- in case of slip ups and you clash the back of your hand against opponents fist it wont bother you
what you need to do is have a system , Master lee teaches us to strike in sets of 30 x palm or fist etc x 4 sets = 120 strikes to start with, until you can begin to increase the strength of the strike on the bag to your own pain tolerance, soak in iron palm lotion for few seconds rubbing in the herbs shake excess lotion of and rub in,use cold or warm up herbs in double boiler till warm enough allowing to put your hands in not scalding though, do this for each 30 sets
You could buy some firm cloth or canvas material, cut to size, sow with thread and needle and strong thread, leave a hole, then fill with rice or small rock or pellets, then sow. Ideally leave a small hole with velcro to seal and open when needed.
are you using weights from weight lifting weights in a bag to strike, please don't do this it will really do some long term damage, this metal doesn't have any give so it will damage your hands, try to acquire steal shot 1/4 inch stainless steal ball bearings , around 3 kg and a good 6x6 inch pea bag, if you have a sewing machine get some calico or other good material and make one, it will spread when you punch it preventing damage to your hands.
In my training we did iron arms banging our wrists against our partners and tiger claw drills best is too get flexibility in wrist stretch it back far as possible inside of your palm has knuckles as well after striking with that grab with finger tips and rake or rip or tear capturing the spirit of the tiger
Where could i get a bag like this and im a karate guy so would it be proper to do it in kibadachi..... horse stance? Also does age have any effect, because i am 15 years old :p
Lawrence teaches iron palm to toughen the body for real time combat and doesn`t waste his time breaking bricks because bricks dont hit back people do. we use iron palm training along with internal hits and kicks do do maximum damage in a to a foe in a real fight. clashing with our toughend armour(arms & legs) will hurt you when you get a hit.

I remember Sydney Australia in the early 70's where you first started.
Good to see you looking so fit.

How can you make your own bag? Can i fill it with sand?
I find rice seems ok but I'm not sure the most recommended to put in the bag
Master looks like Jackie chan, good resemblance
Why not design a iron glove costom fit.
Jeffery Schirm Either that or he could train on cleaning up all that clutter in the background!
Posted my new video:)
Nice training = 5 star
Get awesome Iron Palm Dit Da Jow from PlumDragonHerbs!
