Silvia and Catherine Strano transcending time
Strano Sisters Prove to Be Masters of the Guitar
Spencer, Jamieson, St Louis Post-Dispatch (MO)
A FULL house of enthusiasts gave the Strano Guitar Duo a rousing reception Saturday night and the applause was, on the whole, fully deserved. Brought to St. Louis with the assistance of the Australian embassy and the Australian American Chamber of Commerce, the teen-aged sisters from Sydney performed an impressive program with impressive panache. Their selections ranged from transcriptions of Baroque works by Handel and Scarlatti, to 20th-century works, many of a decidedly Latin cast.
Having performed now for well over a decade, both have the right no longer to be considered prodigies but to be judged as mature musicians in their own right. Even by those critical standards, Catherine and Silvina Strano earn extraordinarily high marks.
The sisters' musical tastes and execution were at their most eloquently expressive in their more deliberate selections. A Handel chaconne was especially winning - a musical gem that amply demonstrates the composer's fertile rhythmic inventiveness. Here the playing, especially in the slower variations, displayed a resonance and seductive languor. Handel's majesty was captured with remarkable power, yet finesse.
Further evidence of the Stanos' musical mastery appeared in the contemporary "Three Duets," by Phillip Houghton, in which they displayed nicely judged dynamics and particularly effective diminuendos. …

    This tall go so stiff, his got no idea hiw to slap down, his left arm os leaning on his stomach instead of deflecting Lawrence forearm, so its block with his right going in to clash forearms then gooseneck your wrist and in same motion left arm goes to deflect down Lawrence forearm, . Ppl think they have to be exact same as Lawrence but no one can be the same, you need to have your own technique but the same method....

      I began my kung fu journey under Chris Fraser and Naide Tutureski back in 1982 in Wollongong. Years later I trained under Lawrence Lee privately. I have never forgotten what I had learned and have revived my training in martial arts later in life. I now train in Muay Thai and still am able to use certain principles in my current regime. I will always be greatfull to have been able to learn under these people.

      You could buy some firm cloth or canvas material, cut to size, sow with thread and needle and strong thread, leave a hole, then fill with rice or small rock or pellets, then sow. Ideally leave a small hole with velcro to seal and open when needed.

    I am devastated to hear of Lawrence's death! I met him at a public display in Auckland NZ, in the seventies. Having recently returned from Wellington where I had been taught by (not open to debate on this) one of the greatest masters in the world, Sifu Bill Young! When I convinced Lawrence to visit Bill on his forthcoming trip to Wellington, he returned with a deep respect for my master, and his permission to learn from Lawrence. Thus my journey began with another man who was, without argument, one of the greatest masters of all time! And...yes, knowing, and living Tong Kune Do (Lawrence stayed with my wife and me while he was in NZ) and seeing firsthand what he was capable of...yes, yes he could have beaten Bruce Lee!

      +traderjoes - If your training is done properly there will be no damage to your hands. You can look up Master James McNeal - Wing Lam - Brian Grey and Tak Wah Eng if you want more in depth information. Also see if you can locate some issues of "Inside Kung Fu". The magazine no longer exists as Inside Kung Fu because the company jumped onto the MMA bandwagon and prints under a differant name now. One issue I HIGHLY recommend is the April 2004 issue of Inside Kung Fu.. This issue is a REAL TREASURE... You will not be dissapointed with that one..

    Hi Deniel, The answer to your question is that the flange joints on your fingers(palm) are not strong as the knuckle and are susceptible to damage if striking the bag to hard.the fingers when straight are at the weakest point and dont havex a strong structure where as when training the 2nd joint knuckles you have structure by aligning the knuckles with the wrist joint in a straight line which makes it very strong. Think of the pheonix as a spear attachment of a punch and has a deep impact and penetrates deeply when you strike which goes internal. Thanks David

  • @ilove2workout28
    @ilove2workout28 10 років тому

    This is a good video. David, Lee says NOT to hit the fingers because the joints can be damaged, yet he says to hit the bag with a phoneix eye fist where the knuckle/joint is making contact... Whats the difference? Thanks.
