I've been using james brown songs including this one for about 6 months now for exactly this reason. Really helps with feel and groove. Funky President is one of my favourites.
Hi Daric, I want to thank you, for your Videos and your Website. Your work is just amazing like your tone and your playing. Everything you do really inspirering for me and influences my playing so much. So thank you!🙏
If you're playing bass in a band, spend time jamming alone with the drummer. I've played in clubs where there were only house speakers on the floor in front of the stage pointed at the dance floor and I couldn't hear myself play. But it wasn't a problem because I was used to taking all of my cues from the drummer.
Instant sub after I found your IG channel (mind you I play guitar and don’t even own a bass……YET 😂🤩! Your energy and love for your craft are infectious! Thx 🙏🏿 maestro!!
Thanks! Do you have any advice for keeping steady time when you're playing alone? I'm kind of one-man-banding it here, playing a stomp box drum, the bass or guitar, and singing. I can do all that - but I keep speeding up, especially when I hit difficult or high energy parts. When I perform live it's worse. I've tried a metronome in my ear but I've got so much going on I get lost and then I have a wrong beat in my ear I can't get back to!
The pocket is basically locking down with the drummer. When you're deep in the pocket, you're locked in tight with the drummer. Basically, being in sync with the drummer
The Payback is my jam.. I have a question...I went to the instrument store to inquire about bass lessons and the clerk told me I had to learn how to play the guitar first is that true?
Damn, I wish this was REQUIRED for all bass players to learn. I know so many players who have been around for decades and they have no concept of cutting off their notes or leaving space. That’s what makes them sound so freaking LOUD and thus makes the whole band sound loud and clunky and pocket-less. It makes it hard for the singers to hear themselves so they have to yell. All these elements result in shitty sounding bands and that has led to people not really wanting to go see live bands!
Solid!!! This is one of the most important Bass lessons, period! 🔥
Great lesson Deric: just keep it simple and groovy. Ciao from Italy
Thanks Daric, Great job on the James Brown topic and the 4 bass articulations, ghost Note etc.
Thanks so much for the lesson and the way you make it easy to understand, which is a sign of a great teacher!
Thanks, Daric . . . great lesson.
Great lesson. Thank you.
Great video, thank you kindly for sharing! Love your explanations and easy breakdown. Cheers!
Awesome lesson.....I will put this song in rotation. God Bless
you're a great teacher, man! Do communicate really well !
can't believe this channel only has 100k subs. Really useful stuff every bass player should be aware!

I am a big funk fan, and I'm kind of ashamed that I've never heard this song before!!! Best way to learn to funk with minimal notes
Right on! So vital! Love ya!
The best bass teacher

That was “I Got The Feeling” btw lol and yeah, I grew up in the 60’s learning those bass lines! You nailed it bro
Great lesson. Very relevant to our play
100k on the way, keep grinding 🙏🏽

Thank you soooo much. I’ve been looking for these. You’re really a life saver
I've been waiting for a lesson just like this thanks so much!!
Awesome!
Feel + the bass sound great. What model is that? (Thanks!)
You inspire me, bro! I see you on Instagram all the time! One of my favorites!
hi daric ! very useful lesson, but i kept looking at the brown 5-string bass on the back against the wall: whats the model ? thanks for your videos !
Man, you can tell people all you want, but you can't teach people to feel. Feel is born in.
6:23 lol I got the feeling 😂
Yeah I was gonna leave a comment about that too. I think he just accidentally misspoke.
Excellent tips!
Thank you😎
Daric could u break down Mandrill s "Fencewalk" one of the original funk bands Funk Bass line
Excelente. Es posible títulos de traducción al Español?
Gotta do Bootsy’s bassline for Soul Power
sick beard bro!
🔥🔥🔥
This is where i need help, thanks for this lesson, i really appreciate it 👍.

Love your lessons! Is that a Gruv gear strap that you are using?
Thanks so much for watching! Yes it is, I love it. Very supportive
My 5 string is feeling heavy these days and I think it’s time for a new strap. I think I will try one, thank you!
Pardon my metal playin self, but could you offer a more basic explanation of "the pocket"?
Great vid btw. Thanks.

@@joldisyri8936 thank you
Enjoying in France 🇫🇷 ! Thanks.
The Payback is my jam.. I have a question...I went to the instrument store to inquire about bass lessons and the clerk told me I had to learn how to play the guitar first is that true?
ofc not.
No that is non sense. You can start with the bass.
No, it’s not true. It’s an old misconception. You can just start with the bass.
Only thing with 5 string basses is that muting is more of a challenge for me
Poppy!!! Fred Thomas!!
This is very educative.. I just learnt how to mute... Chei!!
Thank you for this movie. Q: What is the "Feel and Pocket" meaning :)
Bootsy Collins was also James Brown's bass player at one point wasn't he?
Yeah he was
💙👊😎

Ghost note: It has a rhythmic value, but no pitch.
Damn, a bass with no brand on the head, one pick up and five control knobs. WTH? Cool lesson. I got it down !
You successfully counted knobs but failed with those pickups :(
Could you just write notes down you talk every fast can’t catch up! Good staff. 👍🏽!
A ghost note is a rythm asset, it is not "nothing", the fact this man emphasized its presence is my argument.
