I have played both Bass and Drums for many years, and they truly compliment each other in the most vital of ways. The fun tasks of foundation and finding a groove are something both work together on, and playing both has helped me see that in a variety of contexts. Bravo for this!
Me too (and guitar and mandolin) - Bass and drums need more combined lessons like this! Bass and Drums truly playing together make even amateurs sound pro and then all of a sudden the guitars and vocals can do their thing even better on top of that foundation.
My brother and I are identical twins. He plays drums, and I play bass. When we played in a band together we were always getting compliments on our playing! Great video as always😄🤙🏼
As an identical twin, he plays guitar and I play bass, I salute you and quickly add 'are you you or your brother?' .....do you find you get called 'the twins' rather than individuals?
my basic is root for the kick, accent (3rd, fifth, etc) for the snare, and if i want to join the hats I do ghost notes or muted ones. great lessons sbl!
My girlfriend and I fell in love just by playing together. She's a drummer and I'm a bass player and we started playing together in a school band. Even though we didn't talk that much music just made us fall in love. Been together for almost a year now.
To me, a lot of it was instinctual--what sounded or just felt good. I could go with either the kick drum, snare drum, or high hat, and usually approached it from a position of less is more in developing a groove. I'm far more groove-oriented than melodic, which others would consider limiting if I was a session player, but it's definitely fun for me as a guy who can't handle more than four strings...😀

Whoa! This caught me off guard, I drove Steve Goold around for a day when Matt Kearney played my venue. Steve loves disc golf, I drove him to the course twice in one day lol
Thanks for the video! I just my first rehearsal with a particular band yesterday, and it went over super well because I was applying all of the stuff from this video to my playing during that rehearsal. Thanks again!
Late to seeing this video, but this is so good! So many elements like harmony and sonic foundation are talked about, but until this I hadn’t seen much on how that coexists with the other parts of a band, especially from the bass perspective. This was a key connector in the picture of what to play and when/why!
The "Locking in with the Kick Drum" drum pattern goes so well with the second bass line of "Possession" by Sisters Of Mercy (First and Last and Always Album (1985)).
I always try to listen to a non drummer who is trying to express something rhythmically. If we all start simple, we can always add or subtract something later. At some point the music will literally play itself. That's when you know you're moving in the right direction!! Always have fun and always share what you have learned!!🙃🥁❤️
Speaking as a drummer who plays bass, I've always heard (and seen in most of my bands) that the bass player is the foundation of the tune and the drummer adds color. Really, there's so many different styles and players that it's impossible to nail down one defined job for each. Sometimes the drums drive the tune, other times the bass carries it. Sometimes they both support the piano (but we won't talk about that)
Good topic. I like that 16th note exercise and hitting the individial notes of the subdivision. Oh yeah bass players, from the perspective of the drummer.. we like LOW end and laying it down. You dont need to be a baritone guitar or overthink it Its a BASS. Everyone else in the band wants a nice blanket of low end to anchor it down. If I had my way. There would only be two strings, no frets above the 7th fret and no treble knob and maybe a mid knob.
The job of the baseplayer is to integrate and unify the music at an intuitive / emotional level. The guitarist and keyboardist play things (melodies, harmonies) that the listener consciously hears, the same goes for the drummer, who plays the rythm that the listener consciously hears. Without the bass however, it remains a collection of parts without integration. That bassist on the one hand often defines the chords (because many note groupings can be part of several chords, so that the choice of the bassist for certain notes in his or her bassline actually determines what chord is being played, in combination with the guitar and or keyboard notes), but even more important, the bass tone and rythm is very important for the feeling of the music. Research has shown that many people do not consciously hear the bass, but still what the bass plays has a lot of influence on how they think the music FEELS, by the way it connects the rythm of the drums and the melody and harmony of the guitar and keyboards (and other instruments and voices of course).
Great lesson and exercise, and unfortunately, I felt you were "off" on the in between beats, but you weren't of course, I just couldn't get out of the hitting on a 1 or 4 or 2 or 3. I felt like I can only do the in between beats WITH the other beats, as ghost notes, or whatever. Interesting learning points for me. Great to have a drummer willing to communicate and work together as a unit.
I have always felt that the bass gives the drums color and takes them from solely rhythm to allow more harmony to the rhythm section. Whether your playing with the kick drum, snare, toms or which ever.
I have heard more thane famous drummer who told the bass player what to do, they were his bass player, not their drummer My favourite is when it’s instinctive between the drums and bass Doesn’t mean you don’t listen, but it happens.
You guys have the best bass channel around, it's fantastic. But those screaming/surprised thumbnails are very stressful to look at it, and I hope you guys move on from that trend. Huge fan of your content otherwise.
Thanks for that feedback! Admittedly, 'tamer' facial expressions have a tendency to get less clicks, so it's a compromise we have to make at times, but I'll have another look at this one, cause I'm not entirely convinced of this particular expression for this video either. XD - Lydia
the bass gives the drums sustain and the kick drum gives the bass punch. neither can "lock in" if both are all over the place. many bassists and drummers have no idea what their role is. it's frustrating. i'm a bassist. i try to explain to a drummer this concept and i get the" who the f**k is this bass player telling me what to do". bass and drums is a two way street. both drums and bass got to be paying attention to what is going on.
Bass players who solo don't hold it down....we drummers need repetition and root notes...unless the rhythm guitar is holding it down...than bass can solo...jimi hendrix picked a root player...also van Halen...
Nice. But then as a bass player. Just learn drums. Easy enough. No you don't have to be a virtuoso. Just understand time. And transpose to bass. Ok not easy still. But it will help.
As a drummer of 15 years I need all you bass players to go booff when I go bonk.
🤣🤣🤣
Lol😂
Wow. That's deep, man.
Whatever you say, sir! You’re in charge. 😅
Dang that makes too much sense

Is it on the 16 th notes?
1 then2 then 3 then 4th? Right?
Do you mean the division by 16? 1 then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 …when you reach 16 go back 15,14,13 until you teach one again.
