Thank you my brother. The clarity and patients you've master is more than helpful to me. The biggest gift I think you process is patients. Not knocking those that offer this teaching but they could learn alot from a brother such as yourself. Ya'll thank this dude. I appreciate it. sorry so long. Peace
Nice video, thanks for addressing this subject. The modes can sound confusing at first, but keep in mind, 7 modes, but still only the same 7 of the major scale. I was lucky because I was taught to think modal from day 1 thanks to the crazy music teacher I had. This example might help make it clearer. This is how I approach the modes. Use C Ionian over Cmaj7, D Dorian over Dm7, E Phrygian over Em7, F Lydian over Fmaj7, G Mixolydian over G7, A Aeolian over Am7, and B Locrian Bm7b5.
My man. Nuff respectz for lesson. Literally picked up bass two weeks ago. Picking those modes. Cheers for the informative vid. Good reminder mistakes make you stronger!! Blessings
Really helpful, thanks for this. I am transitioning from 40 years of classical violin to bass guitar and having to unlearn adapt.a huge challenge I have is understanding the reasons for changing position. With the fiddle you change position mainly to change tone and also to reach the upper registers. Position changes are linear and confirm to hand shapes that take years to perfect. Moving to a fretted instrument I’ve really struggled with positions and you’ve just helped hugely by saying that you do it to make it easier. Brilliant! I’ve been over complicating. Cheers Daric, really appreciated, I’m gonna check out more of your lessons.
One of my favorite songs from Victor. For those who are wondering what the song is called? It’s called “Pretty Little Lady Groove” by Victor Wooten of course.
Hi Daric, I always found confusing learning modes progressively moving up in the scale like you are showing (C ionian, D dorian, E phrygian etc...). What worked for me, to really understand and beginning to use major scale modes, was to play them all starting from the same note, major modes first, then all the minor ones, for example: I play C ionian, then play C lydian, then C mixolydian, then move to minor mode starting from C dorian, then C Aeolian, then C phrygian, and finally C locrian, then proceed by playing all these modes in opposite order from locrian to ionian, always starting from C. That way I really hear and internalise all the different sounds and feel of each mode. It's was a bit harder to learn them this way but it definitely paid back. Not saying your way is right or wrong, just sharing what worked for me. Thanks for your videos, I like your teaching style.
Understood completely, I’ve definitely suggested that method to some of my students. Great way to internalize each mode in relation to the root note. 👍🏾
Never understood modes until I watched this video. I'm not joking. It's just a lot easier to understand in a bass players perspective rather than on keyboard
Love your tutorials Daric. Amazing lessons. I think that you've mentioned that you remember by these scales by shapes. Can you explain what you meant by that? I'm a visual learner too and was wondering if you have particular shape or picture that you keep in mind. Thanks in advance for your help!
Hi Daric, I love what you are doing. Can you please show some examples in context using fills based on modes to navigate chord changes. For instances, in a a 2-5-1 groove, can you show how to create 7 different fills with the 7 modes (played not linearly)? Best regards
Hey daric ! I'm a intermediate gospel bassist . Could you show me simple fill ins I can add in church songs instead of just playing the main notes ? I want to spice up my bass playing.
my question is when you're using the modes to create licks or runs particularly on a minor chord sometimes the Dorian mode works and sometimes the Aeolian mode works and wanna know how can tell which one to us?
+Fidell Henderson depends on the riff and what the chord is. If it’s a (6) chord then of course aeolian will work. If it’s the (2) chord then the Dorian will work.
I am really trying here, but this is what I just heard. A scale is an Ionian, an Ionian is a mode and a Mode is a scale. Needless to say, I'm frustrated right now. IS a mode a WAY to play a scale or is it different from a scale? Is a mode always a scale? Last question. Is a mode just a scale that was started past the first note like 2nd,3rd or 4th?
I'm still trying to find a video in which the first scale is done slow enough to learn without feeling overwhelmed... ya, I know, I'm also learning basic music at the same time. So what folks with foreknowledge think of as basic, us beginners are still learning.... yes, the bass is the first instrument I've actually started lessons on. Everything else I've dink with by ear.
Brother you are an amazing player and a great teacher... but please slow down just a little bit... you rush through and speak so fast it is difficult to understand what you're explaining! Blessings to you!
Man your teaching on modes is wonderful. I enjoyed it. it made me understand modes better than any other video. God bless you.
A really likeable guy who doesnt patronize us lesser players.Excellent explanation
I HAVE SEARCHED AND I HAVE NOT YET SEEN A MODE TUTORIAL AS WHOLESOME AS THIS. NOT EVEN CLOSE. BASICALLY THE BEST.
I love the slow breakdown. Very thorough explanation. Thank you.

+jazz Thank you! Means a lot to me! Thanks for watching!
Oh my god. Wait... OH MY GOD! I understood that! I've avoided even looking into the meaning of modes for a decade now. Holy crap, thank you!

I've been trying to understand this for months now... you cleared it up for me in the first minute.

+Ramone Getfildle my pleasure!
Nice lessons
best simpest way superb mahn!
Merry Christmas and Happy New year big brother
Awesome stuff. Thanks Daric
Daric. If you could create a 1 minute lesson on all the Modes, just going straight through each, slowly - that would be helpful as heck!
I have! Those lesson excerpts are available inside of bass nation academy website bassnationacademy.com
@@daricsbasslessons Ok! Thanks!
God bless brother! This has helped me you have no idea!!
Brah THANK YOU so much
Am I the only one learning bass, and totally overwhelmed by all the lessons on youtube??
No, you're not!
I used to be as well, then I did this :
ua-cam.com/video/FWJ7wAetKyk/v-deo.html
It happens brotha. Just take it slow and don't get discouraged.
Cheers dude!
Never understood modes until I watched this video. I'm not joking. It's just a lot easier to understand in a bass players perspective rather than on keyboard
You literally forced me to watch this video because you talked about it so much. The D Dorian quick lick did it. Lol!
Tight work bro.
+Gea Mase ha, mission accomplished! Thanks man
Who did u listen to when u were learning or what music/songs?

like this... very helpful 🖒🖒🖒
can u pls.. apply those modes on chord progressions. make a video of how to utilize thosr modes over chord changes.
+Gelz Bazz that lesson is Coming, stay tuned. You can also visit the website for more in depth tutorials
Hi Daric,
I love what you are doing.
Can you please show some examples in context using fills based on modes to navigate chord changes. For instances, in a a 2-5-1 groove, can you show how to create 7 different fills with the 7 modes (played not linearly)?
Best regards
The song is in the key that is the I (Ionian)
On the II, play the Dorian (2nd mode of the song
On the IV, play the Lydian (4th mode) .
Sorry. The mixolydian scale is 5th (V) mode.
If you do it with extended finger versions you don't have to make any shifts but every two modes as once taught to me by the great Steve Bailey
Considering this video on modes, and another on pentatonic inverstions: in the key of C maj; can we do pentatonic inversions in all modes?
My thought says we can only play chords
Absolutely
Hey daric ! I'm a intermediate gospel bassist . Could you show me simple fill ins I can add in church songs instead of just playing the main notes ? I want to spice up my bass playing.
Say I start off on Key G instead of Key C, would that mean that G can be Ionian???
Pls help Daric🥺
my question is when you're using the modes to create licks or runs particularly on a minor chord sometimes the Dorian mode works and sometimes the Aeolian mode works and wanna know how can tell which one to us?
+Fidell Henderson depends on the riff and what the chord is. If it’s a (6) chord then of course aeolian will work. If it’s the (2) chord then the Dorian will work.
Ok!!!
What’s the difference between D Dorian and a D major scale?
The Dorian scale has a minor 3rd and a minor 7th in relation to the major scale
Daric could you explain how this mode thing started
Where did you get those glasses from i like them.
Thanks, they’re custom made!
I am really trying here, but this is what I just heard. A scale is an Ionian, an Ionian is a mode and a Mode is a scale. Needless to say, I'm frustrated right now. Good teachers are hard to find. You can be good but a teacher is hard.
Why does the phrygian scale have f sharp in it? The sharp was not supposed to be a natural?
+Gilbert Savrimootoo in the keybof C there are no sharps. Only naturals
Daric Bennett's Bass Lessons ok
You are playing a 4 string thats what confused me
Thank you
Ionian... Dorian... mixolydian... aeolian... it’s all Greek to me!😝
You say "Mode" very similarly to Victor Wooten, are you from Nashville by any chance?
