I really feel like anything that would truly blow my mind probably wouldn't feel like Metallica.
They created such a sound that has been interated on and mixed, and so many iconic riffs that I don't think I can be wowed in the same way if I compare them to my newer favorite bands.
I think they could do more but it just wouldn't feel like them if they modern the style and type of riffs they play.

Ok boomer 😉. Only joking, I don't have any hate for Metallica, they used to be one of my favourite bands, but to suggest this basic motorhead rip-off blues pentatonic hard rock tune with a horribly sloppy solo is better than a lot of modern metal is pretty ignorant. Hell even their contemporaries like Megadeth, Testament and Flotsam & Jetsam have released albums in recent years that are way more creative musically and lyrically, better played, better produced and easily capable of competing with the new generation of thrash metal bands.

Your comment on the solo is spot on. A French youtube guitar player (Florent Garcia) did a video on the solo with exactly the same comment : it's a "traditional" Hammett solo, that fit very well with the all "neo-traditional" direction the song clearly take. It's not the most technical (but still not "easy" and long enough for a 3 min song) and a bit dirty but...that's what Metallica solo are. This is THE Metallica sounds. You hear that solo outside of any context and people would go "Oh is that Metallica?"

It feels like it's all pop lyrics and fluff written for the sole purpose of having something to sing over metal riffs. The instrumentation is solid, and feels more Megadeth-y (which makes sense if it reminds you of Kill 'Em All) than I would have predicted, but the lyrics just seem so shallow.

When I first heard this tune the other night I was kinda torn, as far as my initial impression. Now a couple days have gone by and I have found myself repeatedly going back to listen to it, over and over. The chorus where James screams the song title is everything in this track. That and the kick drums. But just the way James climbs the ladder vocally to belt out the chorus is such an amazing hook.
This almost feels like a sorta power metal almost-but-not-quite Dokken-type vibe meets British new wave meets sped-up Load riffage meets a more polished version of Hit the Lights. It's gonna be a go-to live song (the lyrics kinda reflect that) and the song's energy and the boys' own energy are undeniable. I can't explain it, but all I know is my ear loves it.
I'm very happy Metallica is back with new tunes and I'm also very happy they kept the album under wraps so now it's arriving soon - to MY mind - rather than them announcing it 2 years out and then us playing the waiting game.
These old dogs can still hunt.

The only thing that I can say that is distinctly different than the early albums is that James' voice doesn't have near the same level of anger or us-vs-them. --- But that's not bad, just that it is noticeable. The speed on it is nice. This is early Metallica speed and that is what I liked when I first got into them. -------- With all of that being said, I'm going to wait to hear more. Maybe another song or two. With as mediocre as recent Metallica has been, one solid song is not worth buying a full album.

Absolutely have to agree with your comment on it being dad rock. Dude, metal has evolved into some really heavy shit and it just isn’t what Metallica is and even looking at their old stuff is not the same level of heaviness as stuff available today. Sounds just like Metallica and I dig it.

Too many people want to shit on post-Black Album Metallica because it's the seeming cool thing to do. This sounds straight off of Kill 'Em All (which had plenty of catchy hooks), and Metallica back to embracing their Diamond Head (no one ever complains about how infectious every song on Lightning To The Nations is) and Motorhead roots. I had the biggest smile on my face when this came out.

I was introduced to Metallica by my dad as well) He never really liked rock/metal music, but for some unknown reason he had Metallica's "...And Justice For All" album, and once it was playing in his car while we were on the road, I was blown away! Then I "stole" the cassette and listened to the album as soon as got my hands on my cassette player for weeks) Several years later he introduced me to Manowar)

If one didn't know any other Metallica I think this would hit different, and draw people in. That said, the feel is a bit of old school Metallica with a bit of new school as well and I would like to hear more of the album

Yep, you're spot on. There's nothing revolutionary in there, and it can't stand up to stuff they wrote pre-1988. But nothing does, and fans need to stop expecting their newer material to stand up to their 80s material. Solid rock / classic metal songs are what they're gonna write, and that's okay.
I particularly enjoy how their NWOBM influences, especially Motörhead, really stand out. Metallica sort of are the world's best-funded "dad rock" band these days, and they're wearing their influences on the sleeve. And I'm here for it.

Great review Tank. This song is a great throwback in my opinion- Kill Em All style riffs, great speed, fun drums. Even the lyrics “Full speed or nothing”is a line from Motorbreath. Am totally with you- based on this song I will likely get the new album and see them on tour (regular tickets- not the crazy priced VIP stuff).

  • @vinny142
    @vinny142 Рік тому +1

The thing about the solo is that, like the riffs, it's all one huge callback to their first albums. When the solo starts you immediately remember that other solo that started this way and Kirk very cleverly visits all his most famous solos and aas a listener you're way too busy remembering how good you felt listening to *those* solo's, to notice that you are listening to a "greatest hits compilation" solo.
7:50 "I wonder if James used his icon white-V on purpose"
Yes. The fact that most people don't notice and just go "yea, Mutallicuh!" is in part because of the iconic V-look of James.
This entire song is crafted to sound like all the songs that made Metallica famous. It's not a new song written in the Metallica style, it's a song composed of all the hallmarks of the old Metallica style.
This song is pure *marketing*. It's so much like all the other songs at once that people who remember those songs will re-listen those songs and people who don't know the songs will listen just because the entire internet is talking about how much this song sounds like the old ones.
It's no different from what every movie today does; reference all the god movies people remember so they will think the current movie is good, and so they will re-watch the referenced movie. Remember, Metallica gets paid for every listen on everery platform so it literally pays to make people research their old songs.
Am I going too deep here? No, sadly not.

The 2 day tickets went on sale here in Dallas last Friday. The cheapest ticket for way up in the top seats started at 180. Way to rich for my blood so I will be waiting for the single show tickets when they go on sale in January. I saw Metallica once way back in the 90's in San Diego and it was Korn and Metallica.

With its clear references to "Hit the Lights" and "Motorbreath," and the subject matter of the album's a harkening back to those days, i'm most impressed that they avoided sounding like a parody of themselves. Quite the tightrope walk. To go this direction right when it started to look as if they were turning into a legacy band is actually a rather bold, confident move.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that is James’ old Electra. It sounds the same as it did during Ride and Kill Em All. This is a good song to jam to when you’re doing chores or gaming. I’m excited for the new album

This reminds me a lot of 90s Metallica. The Hardwired album reminded me a lot of 80s Metallica. Both are cool music, not something I'd put on for myself, but cool to listen to.
What's most impressive for me is the fact, that this band has an average age of 59 and is still going this hard. James and Lars turn 60 next year, Kirk is 60 already.
