It’s a homage to Kill em All and the bands like Motörhead and Diamond Head that inspired Hetfield. Great tune
I heard the kill em all influence instantly and the old school speed metal, so cool to see em doing that style again!
Of course it is. The name of this song Lux Eterna translated into english as Eternal Light, harking back to Hit the Lights!

Last time a Metallica song grabbed me like this one, was Enter Sandman way back when it came out in 1991! Banger song. James' vocals are the best I've heard since probably forever...Wow, just wow! Lars brought his A-game, Kirk's solo is unlike anything he's done before and Rob is frigging solid in keeping the rhythm. Killer song and Welcome back boys, welcome back!

That chorus is such an earworm. James has sounded amazing live this past year and a half or so. I think it's the best he's sounded with some of the sung notes he didn't used to quite hit. That kinda carries over here with this new track. The part where he sings "aEterna" and he climbs the ladder with the note is beyond hooky and badass.

James still proving why he's still one of the greatest metal frontmans ever! He still sounds so good! I'm not sure what I'm more excited for a new Metallica record or the fact that Architects are going on tour with them on certain dates!
The concept of the album is about the first 18 years of one's life hence the title of the album so I expect it to be somewhat of a throw back to what inspired them as kids.

Yeah that would be awesome! But I do hope we get a Metallica " Ballad " , I miss that about the last two albums.
I guess the Day that never comes is close as is Halo on Fire but I want something like One or The Unforgiven.
A lifetime of hope / light makes sense given the concept.
And then you become an adult and see, the way Metallica did when they hit their 20s (some of them, years into their career already), that life can be pretty shit.
Capturing the magic of one's youth while writing with the experience they've accumulated is a pretty smart choice.

Lars is the Ringo AND Paul in the band. Is he the best? No, but he knows what Metallica sounds like and gets the songs there

Had that new wave of british heavy metal feel, even with the vocals. Just wish James had that anger in his vocals of the earlier albums, he doesnt grab me like he used to.

Sounds like it's a lost Garage days re- revisited track. Almost identical production quality and hence the motorhead sound. Wonder if Bob Rock has anything to do with this one
Personally, I liked Death Magnetic a lot more than Hardwired. This new track is very reminescent of the earlier Metallica and it's pretty good. I always like Metalliica the most when they have switch-ups in their songs but as a straight up metal song, this was good.
Hey guys, I wonder if this song is a tribute to Diamondhead? The lyrics obviously reference a live show experience, the pace and chord progression is very reminiscent of Diamondhead, and "lightning the nation" is an unmistakable akble Diamondhead reference.
Maybe this album is going to be tracks based heavily on their early influences, in order to turn on younger generations to the NWOBHM the band grew up on. This approach would explain the cover art almost completely as well.

A couple of things: Those drums are quantifized using a tool in Pro Tools that evens out the drums. It`s also too compressed in the mix. Other than that, it`s a great song. That being said, these two guys are so cute with their similar nose rings and the guy with pink sweater and nail polish. :*

Fun fact:
Lux Aeterna can be translated as either Light Eternal / Eternal Light OR A Lifetime of Light.
So that's definitely an interesting choice of song title. Possibly a return to a more open, thrashy Metallica with those huge drums and a more interesting chord progression.
I don't think the band will do an entire album from one perspective again, and I think that's the right choice to make.

My first reaction was like that sound like 80th punk rock mixed with trash and since I recently replayed Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy in PS5 I have punk rock fresh in my mind.
But they really dropped a bomb with it and it being a song on a new ablbum is great because I actually just thought they released a single since I wouldn't have been surprised if Hardwired…to Self-Destruct (can't believe it's already 6 years) would be their last album.
Thats a BIG 🖕🏻 to all the Haters that keep saying there through!!

Metallica didn't become popular from stranger things although they did become popular from master of puppets but that was before stranger things but it is nice that more of the newer generation is getting into it

It's funny that "long time" fans are the ones who always shit on them instead of being the more staunch supporters.
Here's the thing: when you essentially perfected thrash, there's really no other reason to keep doing it. That's what they did in the 80s.
If the band had stayed a little closer to TBA style of heavy metal for the Loads I dont think there would have been such a division. The change from TBA to Load was far greater than the one from AJFA to TBA. That being said if you appreciate the band and you grow with them then the music becomes that much meaningful.
The thrash fans that cant let go are the ones who refuse to grow up. They're letting time pass by meanwhile the world left them behind.
One thing they can hang their hat on: thrash didnt become mainstream, only Metallica did. They tried to bring everyone with them but some bands refused to join the ride.

He was my idol back in the early days but of late he seems to put little effort in with his leads most of the time. He has done those licks before so many times. Just my opinion.
