Taking from a movie called: Johnny Got His Gun which I rented back in 89 when this video came out! My college roommates and I including our girlfriends were balling our eyes after it was over😭😭😭😭 we all had people in the Military particularly the ARMY and MARINE CORPS!!! One of my roommates uncle served in Vietnam along with my dad in the ARMY and they said one guy got almost blown to bits stepping on an IED and both arms and legs were gone but he did not survive! THANK YOU TO ALL OUR COMBAT VETERANS AND CURRENT MILITARY SERVING IN WAR ZONES IN PARTICULAR❤️❤️❤️ 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
'One' was inspired by the story (and subsequent movie) 'Johnny got his gun' about the terrible aftermath of World War I for one soldier who is unfortunate not to die in battle... People forget that World War I was a huge, traumatic event on a global scale that had never been experienced before... The Crimean War of 1853 was a result of tensions between the European empires of the 19th century vying for power and territory... Weapons were being created that expanded the scale and breadth of wars... The American Civil War of 1861 was another regional conflict that sent signals that war games were changing w/ better guns... better cannons... better explosives... Casualty figures were rising significantly. The invention of the 4-wheel car in 1891... the airplane took flight in 1903; by 1916 when World War I broke out in the early 20th century, the first aircraft were used to drop bombs on enemy lines... The distances covered were suddenly much greater and pretty soon, the empires of Europe (and Asia) were at war w/ each other and it was the first time in mankind's history that regional wars were suddenly outdone by a massive military conflict that engulfed a significant part of the world... It was so bad that it was called 'The Great War'... 'The War to end all Wars'... Casualties mounted in the hundreds... then thousands... then millions... not to mention the catastrophic numbers of wounded and traumatized combatants... And it came to an end only to encounter the Spanish flu pandemic that decimated the world's population by spreading w/ the soldiers who fought and aided World War I... Of course, we know that it only set the stage for World War II in 1939... By that point, we had faster airplanes... bigger bombs... missiles... tanks... battleships ... submarines... 3% of the world's population was wiped out in World War II. The reality of war was glorified for centuries to inspire people to enlist as soldiers and defend the glory of their homelands... That reality was destroyed by the Vietnam War in the 1960's... the 1991 Gulf War, when veterans were left untreated for PTSD and "shell shock"... denied benefits and health care after returning home from war... Metallica did a great job w/ their songs by not glorifying it but exposing the brutality and ugliness of it all.
WWI is often said to be the worst war in human history from the perspective of the soldier. WWII is generally considered the worst war in history for civilians.
@@ryantannar5301 Toothache... stomachache... Both s++k In any case, World War II was worse because the casualties doubled and the scope of war went ground and air.
both suck, but this dismissive attitude when somebody was just having a friendly discussion does nothing but prevent us from being able to analyze the differences. I'm not too sure you even follow what I was getting at. You also have no clue what WWI was like if you're saying that the addition of air combat made WWII worse for soldiers. How is air combat worse than having your skin melt off your bones as you cough and vomit up your internal organs? When in WWII did several million die to advance a front line justs a couple miles? What was your point here even?@@sumonjamal1653

It's brilliant. The pace of the music speeds up as he becomes more frustrated. The drums almost sound like machine gun burst. The guitar solo is chaotic as if it's his mind spiraling out of control. Metallica always infuses tempo and sound as part of the story.

Love these guys such fantastic musicians…my personal favorite is from their first album, Whiplash. One is a masterpiece and a great representation of how talented these guys are
Yeah I remember when this first came out Metallica had never did a music video and me and all my friends all gathered around the TV when MTV premiere did and we were all blown away. It was just awesome I seen them for the first time in 1989 on that tour and I’ve seen them 13 times since then.
I was 18 when this album came out and this was their first music vid on MTV not to mention the local rock station played the hell out of this song. The scenes in the vid was from a classic war movie Johnny Get Your Gun I believe is the title. Song definitely paints a vivid picture of what a disabled vet goes through mentally from the trauma of their mortal wounds. This was Metallicas last thrash album before toning it down to more rock metal level 🤘😎🤘
First time I heard this was on MTV when it stood for its initials and not the crap today. That was 1988 and I was 8yrs old. I had this album on cassette.
*Glad you caught most of the story & lyrics you almost need to React with Closed Captioning on. Because it's a World War I soldier who lost his vision, his hearing, his arms & legs to a landmine*
This is probably my all-time fave Metallica song. They do an AWESOME live version that is a little theatrical - great show to see in person! Also - I always felt Metallica could put out an all-instrumental album and it would have been a HIT! Instrumentally they are phenomenal.
Can't believe you have never heard or seen this before. This was my introduction to Mettalica. I've never followed their career as a metal enthusiast, but they deserve the attention. Their music can be (and is) quite complex. Next step: Fade to Black live in Seattle 89. It is a must listen song where you can feel the anger in James's voice.
Nah. Listening to the album version first is the best way to go. Getting the gist of the original mood, dynamics & instrumentation is important. Then watch how they play with it live.
As it has been said, the scenes in this video are from "Johnny got his gun". Which was a movie. In fact, Metallica wanted to use scenes from the Movie. So, they bought the rights to it. It's a timely message. another to react to, is "Sky Pilot" By the Animals, Make sure it's the LONG version. It tells the same story.
I meant folk rock .. not even close in 1989 .. just a head shaker .. first year they recognized metal .. and dropped the ball straight up .. this is classic song and video 💯❤️🙏✌️.. to this crazy to me is all god bless you 2 appreciate your channel and thoughts shared 💯
The film clips add alot to the video but as a band they are riveting to watch. James and Jason are straight up feral in their playing and vocals in the very best way. Kurt brings the beauty to the speed and Lars makes artillery fire you can feel. When this video premiered I would literally stand in front of the tv every time it played & I was tuned in for the first 2 months 😊
For me, you’re so right about the overlay being a little bit distracting. Highly recommend listening to just the track in headphones after, new experience and it shines through way more, especially when it hits towards at the end.
As the comment directly below says, it was their first video. Metallica was not a new band, but thus far had declined to make a video. There was all kinds of anticipation about this video. This was an event, a scheduled event.

@@robbob5302 It's an anti-war story. Everything else is brought on by the viewer's own baggage. The song itself makes no reference to any physician. Hence, "One".
Song is a masterpiece
I never felt what "metal" was until I was hit with "DARKNESS ENVISIONING ME , ALL THAT I SEE, ABSOLUTE HORROR." like omg yes
Listen to the whole album! It is in my top albums on my whole playlist
Want to hear a different side of *#Metallica* that originally got backlash from hardcore fans check out *(Nothing Else Matters)* they were being accused of selling out. *James Hetfield* responded yeah we sell out every Stadium we play LOL
Love first time reactions to songs like "one". Songs that make understand why Metallica has become this huge band
What a great channel you Two have here. Your thoughtful insights are a joy to observe. Thank you for sharing yourselves with the Universe.
I loved it when i was young (16)and i love it even more today (46)
It will stand the test off time
Great reaction!! Yes, listen to the album version too, but this video truly encapsulated the lyrics/vibe of the song.
I'd second the Fade To Black as being the next song by Metallica!! Cheers.
This was my first Metallica experience seeing the video on MTV as a teenager many years ago and few songs have ever impacted me as much, the definition of living Hell😢.
I've been a life long fan ever since.
ONE is on the top 3 Metallica songs. My list I listen to is huge! Metallica just keeps giving us incredible music. I dont know if you have done THE DAY THAT NEVER COMES? Its a Great Songs also
They played this on Top Of The Pops. In 1988.The presenters expressions at the end was epic
This song makes my soul soar and makes me know the meaning of the struggle to survive, but at the end of it all, God has determined everything so that our life will have meaning in the spirit of struggle.😢
saw them on this tour with Queensryche opening.. great show.
Absolute living legends. No one better
Fade to black is my favorite Metallica song. I usually listen to it with the lights off and headphones. I’ve only been to one of their concerts and it was amazing
Full body chills every single time!🤘
I’m watching this very late unfortunately….but I now see u guys r about to hit 100k im so proud of u guys and have never seen a reactor get this kind of following so fast!! Keep up the great work!!! Btw… this video is amazing but intense.
The video is absolutely moving and this is one of those songs that will never die. It will always be great.
Your Metallica reactions are what brought me to your channel, I love Metallica they got me into heavy music back in the day! I see them every time they come to Toronto. One of my all time favourite songs has always been The Four Horsemen
❤❤❤THIS IS O N E!!!!!!THIS IS ONLY,UFORGETTEBLE EXPIRIENCE!!!!!!❤❤❤
My favorite song by them
Love these guys such fantastic musicians…my personal favorite is from their first album, Whiplash.
Another awesome reaction 👏🏼
Thank you!! 😁
Beautiful absolutely beautiful guitar and lyrics 👍👍👍👏👏👏💯💯💯 this'll make a Playlist for sure.
in2016 i gad a stroke and this song heloed me recover
If you haven't done it yet, " The Day That Never Comes" by Metallica is another good one that is on the war theme.
Seen them as young cats opening for other bands, then seen them with Guns N Roses, and at Monster Of Rock in awesome concert yay 🤘😆🤘🎸🎸🎤🥁
First time I heard this was on MTV when it stood for its initials and not the crap today. That was 1988 and I was 8yrs old. I had this album on cassette.
Yes Yes Yes
Fade to Black
Metallica's ONE on MTV was the reason I got hooked on Metallica as a teen.🤟🏼
One of my favorites
*Glad you caught most of the story & lyrics you almost need to React with Closed Captioning on. Because it's a World War I soldier who lost his vision, his hearing, his arms & legs to a landmine*
This is probably my all-time fave Metallica song. They do an AWESOME live version that is a little theatrical - great show to see in person! Also - I always felt Metallica could put out an all-instrumental album and it would have been a HIT! Instrumentally they are phenomenal.
One by Creed! 🔥
More proof that metal music isn't "just noise with screaming".
“The big four” Slayer,Anthrax,Megadeth and METALLICAAAA!!!
The speed was the guys heartbeat
Best song they ever made 💯
I wore out two copies of this cassette cutting grass. Good times.
I'm not a subtitles guy, but this video (especially for the first time) demands all the lyrics and speech being understood
The overlay track is only on this video. In the main song there is no overlay
Best way to listen to this is with the Vol @ 11!!!!
God, I miss the 80’s! ❤❤
Wars have always been fought for the reasons you expressed. They are never just fought for altruistic reasons.
One of the best song/video ever made
just heard it for the first time… i’m blown away!!!!!!
You HAVE to do the live version. Do the one from the 72 seasons tour and watch them kill this at 60 !!!!!!!!!!!
I also was one of tjose who watched the MTV premiere of this video and also remember Metallica saying they would never make a video... lol.
Listen to the album version, when you wanna hear it without the overlay from the movie.
I meant folk rock .. not even close in 1989 .. just a head shaker .. first year they recognized metal .. and dropped the ball straight up .. this is classic song and video 💯❤️🙏✌️.. to this crazy to me is all god bless you 2 appreciate your channel and thoughts shared 💯
to enjoy the song you need to listen to the track only without the movie pieces
The film clips add alot to the video but as a band they are riveting to watch. James and Jason are straight up feral in their playing and vocals in the very best way. Kurt brings the beauty to the speed and Lars makes artillery fire you can feel. When this video premiered I would literally stand in front of the tv every time it played & I was tuned in for the first 2 months 😊
Got to do Fade to Black .One is awesome too 😎 🎸🎼🎵🎶🎵
This Song and Video Is a Masterpiece
the kingggg!!!
One of the most emotional video on UA-cam 👌🖐️
For me, you’re so right about the overlay being a little bit distracting. Highly recommend listening to just the track in headphones after, new experience and it shines through way more, especially when it hits towards at the end.
Work out playlist necessity is Battery by Metallica I can't remember if you've done that before.
As the comment directly below says, it was their first video. Metallica was not a new band, but thus far had declined to make a video. There was all kinds of anticipation about this video. This was an event, a scheduled event.
