This Toro Recycler lawn mower had a broken recoil starter pull rope that I needed to repair and replace to see if it would work safely. It is one with a Kohler brand motor. I wanted to keep this lawnmower from being tossed in a landfill, and thought it might work out as a backup push mower on our 1 acre property if I could just fix the pull cord. I was RIGHT! This will also work with a Briggs and Stratton motor Recoil assembly!

Hi, my name is Jason Sipe. Welcome back to my channel. I'm going to be going over how to replace a pull cord on a lawnmower. There's several years of use and abuse a pull cord on a lawnmower will often snap and makes your lawnmower more or less unusable. But, before you just throw away your lawnmower and buy another one, you can fix it pretty easily and I'm going to show you how to do that. This is a Toro lawnmower, but most lawn mowers have a pull cord at the top and you basically take the the bolts out or take the nuts out, and then you can remove this thing it's it's a retractable unit and this is the flywheel so the pull cord makes this spin and it's if you pull it fast enough it starts the engine so when one of these pull cords snaps you just have to remove the the old rope and put in a new one okay so the whole idea of this is that you're gonna you're gonna wind this up there's a spring inside here and it's what retracts this so you you turn this counterclockwise and then it wants to retract so you're gonna take this as far as you can
keep doing it until it's really hard to turn it anymore
and then you're gonna take it until this lines up this hole right here and this hole right here and you're going to take something like a screwdriver or something to hold that in place
and then you're gonna take your gonna take this rope
like this, you're gonna thread this through here (the recoil assembly guide hole)
Okay, so I need to get a piece of wire or something to help push this through, then push it all the way through here.
and then you're going to pull this out then you're going to make a knot on this end
so it can't go through so you can't pull it through that hole
tighten it up a little bit if you have to make two knots it might be what you need to do we'll see no that'll probably work now you're going to pull this out and it's going to retract it's going to retract this watch this see that now you're going to put this one through here with that in then you can put these back into position
and screw those down, then you're ready to test. Okay, so this is the mower that I found in a dumpster and I bought a little PVC plug and that screwed right in, so it keeps the oil from all sloshing out. I put new four-cycle oil in there, and I put this drawstring on and we'll see how it goes this holder for the drawstring is a little too high from the old drawstring so I'm gonna probably have to move this and drill through here and move it to there. Okay so we're gonna try to see if this works.
Pull the bail back and give it a rip.

My Toro 149cc refuses to interface with the flywheel after following these instructions. Literally just spins free above the motor
Is it possible that it's not fully engaged?
Yep, that was the problem
Very helpful video, took me about 10 minutes to do. Could have used a bit more information on locating the hole in the recoil assembly that the cord passes through. I used a thin wooden skewer to line up that hole with the exit hole.
