As an adult woman who is not so mechically inclined, I was able to do this repair for my mother, who is a widow. It's now one less thing she has to worry about. Thank you so much for this video!! Sending good wishes to you and yours!
Let me start by saying I have ZERO mechanical ability. When I told my friends I was going to attempt the replace the stater pull rope, they laughed and I got the sarcastic "good luck". I watched this video 4 times and was certain I could do it. I set up my lap top out side got the tools like Jeff instructed and BAM.......30 minutes later job done and done successfully. $6 and 30 minutes. Jeff saved me both time and money. I went step by step without a single misstep. Great video, thank you so much Jeff. You are awesome and for all those reading, trust me if I can do it you can do it!!!!
Like the dad I never had. Thank you so much for teaching me how to do this. Saved me a repair fee. I love this. Now I can pass this on to my kids. I appreciate you
A stupendous step-by-step process that left no details out. You, sir, are a great teacher. Even starting out at the beginning explaining the tools needed saved me a ton of time. It made me realize I was missing my 5/16th" socket. So, when I picked up my new rope and handle, I got a replacement socket. I can't thank you enough.
The perfect repair video: straight to a clear, thorough explanation and demonstration, no steps skipped, plenty of useful little tips along the way. We were able to repair ours because of this video. Never imagined it was this easy -- thank you so much!
The best video on the internet for this repair. Followed it to the letter for my Toro with a Brigs and Stratton engine. Identifying size of bolts saved me an extra trip to hardware store.
I love UA-cam !!! I am a small older female, and I have been able to fix so many things around my house on my own!! Finding a knowledgeable employee at Home Depot, or where ever you get your parts is also a big help.! I've had my lawn mower 20 years, this will be the second pull rope I've repaired, and last year I bought a new mower which wasn't half as good as my beat up one, so back it went and I repaired the broken wheel, the front wheel drive and the blade! YOU CAN DO IT!!!
I am the farthest thing from a fixit guy. I followed your instructions step by step and replaced the starter rope and handle on my craftsman mower a few days ago. This is an excellent video and you are a great teacher! Thank you so much!
Thank you so very much. Your content is enormously helpful. I got down to the rivets and decided I needed a tutorial. Well done! Thanks, again. ***UPDATE*** Although it has been snowing and raining today, I replaced the rope on my mower. I started it, made a loop around the backyard, and proudly parked it! I am exceedingly grateful to you for your generosity and your superior tutorial. I watched again today - pausing as I followed your instructions. The only thing I would add is the fact that the shroud is sharp! I have battle wounds! I feel as though I got a pay raise today! Now, on to the garbage disposal. 😮 Thanks, again!!
Just did this. You did this video perfectly. Ordered a new rope from Amazon Saturday afternoon, it arrived Sunday afternoon. $8. I got the "better rope". Probably saved $50 plus dollars (gas to get to wherever) . Well Done, Sir!
Thanks! My ripcord cut off right next to the inner knot and came completely un-spooled. I coiled the cord to see how far to rotate the spinner, pushed a screwdriver in there to hold it, used the suggested melting technique to get it through. After all was put back together it works perfectly again. you're a life saver!
Many thanks for this great video. I just fixed the pull starter on my 25 tear old mower. Followed all your instructions and after one hour ( I'm 78 years old) had the thing working again. Cheers from Australia.
Great video! My in-laws had the exact same lawn mower, and the rope broke when I borrowed it. I just spent $5 at Lowe's for a new rope, followed the video, and replaced it in about 20 minutes. The only issue i had was the oil spout came off when i put the engine shroud back on, so i had to clean everything to make sure there was no dirt in the oil tank. Thank you again!
I don't know how much money you just saved me, but everything was as you showed and I was done in less than an hour. Thank you for your knowledge and skill!!
Finally I was able to find the video I needed without having to watch hours upon hours of the history of lawn mowers, this was a great and very helpful video. My pull cord just went south on me and I was thinking I had to take it in for repair but now I think I am able to do it myself. Thank you.
For me the hardest part of this whole job was threading the rope through the handle. The dang thing would just not go through. I eventually managed to push it through with a thin wire. Great video! Thank you for posting it!
I want to personally thank you for this video tutorial. My dog chewed off my lawnmower cord and with your help I was able to install a new one in 20 minutes.
Very well-done. Clear, step-by-step directions that can be successfully followed by someone who struggles with all things handy and mechanical. One suggestion: remind the viewer at the start to disconnect the spark plug. Thank you for this video!
Ended up having to replace the tank on a relatives 6hp Briggs&Stratton. Took about 5 minutes total. 2 Phillips head screws, 3 - 8mm bolts around the tank and the single 10mm on the side. Remove the fuel line and it was out of there. Quickly. Lol. Noticed it was leaking when I was replacing their pull cord last week, using this vid to follow along. Thanks! Made it very easy indeed. FYI: I got an Original Equipment Replacement Briggs&Stratton fuel tank from Amazon for $29.96 USD. About $20 cheaper than list price. It comes with a revised spacer for the lower bolt that pops into the hole in the tank instead of just floating freely on the bolt, between the tank and mower.
My goodness, may the miracles you bring to others in time of need, bounce right back to you. Thanks 🙏 for the clear and precise details on replacing the starter rope. Have a blessed day today, and always! 💫💫💫
Thank you. My younger Dane seems to like the pull cords (he's lucky he is cute at 150 lbs of toddler antics) your video was great at helping me replace the cord on my new mower, being a single , working lady with a couple back surgeries and arthritis throughout my spine..I was worried it would take me forever but your instructions and demo really made it quite simple. Thank you so much.
It's been a long time since I had a mower apart, and I always check a tech manual or video to see what I'll be getting into. Your video is very well made. I could clearly see the locations of screws and parts before removal. The differences between my Quantum Briggs and Stratton mower engine and your Craftsman were easily worked through. I especially appreciate you describing twisting the oil dipstick instead of pulling it out. For safety, I cleaned well before trying to twist, and it did pop out. but no debris was present to fall into the crankcase. Thank you!
Thank you Jeff! Someone cut the cord on my mower and stole the gas cap. I wouldn't have had a clue how to install a new rope without this video and would probably bought a new mower or paid way too much for repair. Much appreciated!
You rock! Thanks for taking the time to put this online. I was able to knock this out much quicker than expected with your help. it's very much appreciated!
Very useful and well demonstrated. I was about to drill out the four pop-rivets that hold the spool cage on but thankfully I found this video first. Job now successfully completed as per the video.
Thank You ! This was extremely helpful . I don't know what they would have charged to do this but it costed me $4.49 and about 30 minutes of my time. Much appreciated and subscribed
When I saw the rivets, I thought I had a Chinese copy of a B&S with a non serviceable pull string, forcing the consumer to replace the whole assembly. It's been so long since I've worked on one (reliability), I forgot the whole shroud comes off. Good video. Got me where I needed to go.
You just saved me a trip to my favorite small engine repairman that lives 40 miles away. That's gas for the Silverado (80 miles roundtrip x2), labor and parts! Yes, Scott Bergstom is correct....YOU ARE THAT HERO!!!
Perfect tutorial! Got her up and running in less than 30 minutes after watching your video a few time and making sure I had the right tools and sockets handy.
' stumbled on your clip after 2 months of scratching my head on how to remove the rivets without damaging them. Thank you for the instructions, ' will try it.
Thanks. Just did mine in about 15 minutes. Only difference is my rope broke right at pulley. Had to wrangle spring and get everything wrapped and aligned. Instructions were spot on.
Thank you for this post, saved me a trip to the repair shop. Took all of 30 minutes or less, and I was thinking I had to drill out the rivets to get to the cord ! Using the screwdriver to lock the reel was great. Thanks again
Thank you so much. Every time before I took the rewind part out to change a cord, with results that the coiled spring went sproing and hours later it finally got back together, after a few dozen choice words. ( LOL) This time it was easy doing it your way. I used a small stiff string tied to a small strong sewing thread tied to the new cord and it worked so well. I put the stiff string thru first and pull the thread and new cord right thru. Thanks again sir!
Thank you, Jeff! We fixed our pull rope following this step-by-step. We crowed like a rooster when we fixed it and the mower started right up! You're video was perfect!!
man, just what i needed. I had to take out the spooler as well to cut off the rest of the pull rope. Thanks for the tut. you probably saved me around 130 bucks having the service place i usually go to for parts. Labor appeared to 100/hr. i said to myself, "self, i got this." thanks to you sir. Good day.
I've NEVER REPAIR a Lawnmower until today. Yes, the thought of taking it to the repair shop was on my mind. THANK YOU!!! Yes, you've saved me a minimum of $100. 1). I overfilled the oil 2). jammed... mower would not start 3). After draining the oil and taking the plug out. 4). I broke the Pull Rope 5). ***I REALLY was going to take it to the repair guy... NOPE! 6). THANK YOU LORD JESUS!! Repair Everything by watching videos! 7). Mower is QUIETER and works better!!
with this video, I was able to perform the replacement for the first time. And the lawnmower worked the first time after replacement. Thank you very much
Thank you. I don't normally do my own repairs ( I am not very 'handy'), but watched the video anyway, and it looked do-able so I had a go. It took me about 40mins (slow and steady). Like you say - EASY !! Thanks again.
Thanks for posting! Clear, concise, correct wrench sizes.I've done it before on my snowblower, which doesn't have the plastic covers and gas tank is not in the way. This vid showed not everything has to be removed.saved much time,Thanks again.
Thanks for the simple explanations and great camera work! I have a craftsman mower just a few years younger than one in the video and the major parts and bolts were a match. Just the cover was a bit different. Took about an hour to complete because I didn't want to lose any bolts. A magnetic dish became very useful to corral all the bolts. Thanks for saving me some $$$$$!!
Jeff, you are a legend. This was so helpful. Did the business in half an hour ... would have been shorter if I'd not messed up feeding the cord back through the right holes. Thank you so much.
This was a FANTASTIC tutorial!!! (And that's an understatement!!) I found this video a couple days ago and went to pick up the supplies. $4.99 at Home Depot for the new handle/rope and about 30 minutes of my time. Just finished the job, mower starts up perfectly! I just called our local repair place, curious as to what they would've charged: $25 including the rope. Just saved us $20 plus the cost of time to load the mower in the SUV, gas to drive it to the shop, gas to pick it up, and unload it once we're home. Thanks again!!!
Hi, thank you for posting this video. I am not terribly mechanical yet i was able to do this without much swearing! Seriously, thank you - every tip you shared applied to my mower and saved me a ton of time and hassle.
Thank you for this video! I was able to fix my mower cord with each of these well-explained steps. Saved me lots of money and time. However, now that it works, I have no excuse not to mow.
Many thanks from Knaresborough England. I didn't have a clue what to do until I watched your video. Clear and easy to follow instructions made it seem easy.
Thank you so much for showing this technique to me. I had a problem with the cord pull once I put the bolts in, but figured out to attach the pull cord up the handle first before I bolted every thing back together. God Bless you for showing this.
Thank you for making the video. It saved me from drilling out the pop rivets. Couldn't see a way around them. Taking off the engine shroud was pretty easy, and I didn't have to re- pop rivet. Thank you.
Excellent step by step instructions! I was going to take it to the shop but decided to try it myself. I am far from a handyman but followed everything you said and I got it done and with no extra parts leftover! Woo Hoo! Many thanks!!!
But for the exhaust and air filter shrouds I had to remove the video was spot on! Would strongly suggest making sure the base of the oil stick is clean just in case it pops out.
Thank you for the very helpful video. Other than a few changes to socket sizes, such as 8 mm instead for a few bolts on my Troybilt mower, this video helped me get the job done so my mower was ready to go! I raised it up on a floor jack and jack stands and sat on a 5 gallon bucket instead of bending over. Great video, Jeff!!
your video definitely deserves an Oscar. thank you so much. camera work, position, explanation, no steps skipped like the small ones as to where each of the bolts and lighting were excellent.
Thanks for that. I did cut the rivets out on a mower last month and I'm glad I did because the rope assembly was in the wrong position from factory which wore out the rope prematurely. I will do it the way you have shown this time. The mowers are different here down under but the motors are the same. Cheers
I was thinking of doing the same instead of taking apart everything. How hard was it to do? Did you just drill out the old rivets? Is that easier to do than what this video shows of taking apart everyrhing?
@@154g I Think it's actually easier to do as its in the video if you only need to replace the rope. Faster to undo three bolts than drill out and replace the rivets.
Yes; read the comments. I suggested a while back ago (maybe a year or so ago) using a crochet hook to pull the cord thorough; then you do not have to cut the metal.
Great video. Reviewed it before replacing pull rope on my 2008 MTD mower. Your video extractly fit my situation down to the screw sizes and locations. Made the job a piece of cake. Thank you
Hi again Jeff - but for one wrinkle that I blame entirely on the Swedes, thanks to your great video on start cord repair I got my Husq 5521p back in ship shape working order and today I was able to tackle & defeat the long (!) grass at my cabin. Thanks again you made the fix a million X easier! Have a great weekend.
Super helpful! I had a little trouble getting the tension right on the pull cord, but otherwise, it now works and is put back together. Thank you so much. I am feeling very accomplished!
So, if the old cord snapped, how do you calibrate the tension on the new cord? Also, where on the cord to you place the metal object? What is it for BTW?
Thanks a million, this was a great help. Theading the rope through backwards was definitely the way to go for our mower, and the screwdriver trick after winding worked a treat. Thanks mate, from Australia.
Thanks so much ! It was a blessing to see my same motor 6.0 horse briggs as soon as I searched for "briggs rope replace". The only difference between your mower motor and mine - My sticker on top says "snapper" yours says "craftsman" Once again, thanks for the GREAT instruction - especially the tip and trick about sticking a screw driver in there to hold the spool.
I wasn’t sure If I had to pull all that off just for the pull rope. I watched you’re video and it did indeed help me and I learned a few tips. Thank you from down under. 👍🏻🤙🏻
Thank you.....this is EXACTLY what I was looking for and had no idea how to fix. My rope broke off inside where you tie the knot, so all I did was take it apart and tie a new knot in the end. The rest of the rope was fine. ;-)
As an adult woman who is not so mechically inclined, I was able to do this repair for my mother, who is a widow. It's now one less thing she has to worry about. Thank you so much for this video!! Sending good wishes to you and yours!
Good on you for taking care of Mom.

thanks friend!
You really helped this mechanical novice save $80 bucks or so. Thanks!
About to mow my grandfathers lawn when the string just snapped! This video was exactly what I needed, a million thanks!
Your tutorial was a money saver for me. Thank you sooo much. This is the only one that gave good pictorial instructions.
first time i've ever touched the engine of a lawnmower and managed to do all this, thanks man!
Really good video. One of the very best I've seen. Explains perfectly and no additional miscellaneous information.
Clear, to the point, no stupid music. Good video.
Ta Da! We fixed our mower!!!! So empowering. Thanks for the very easy to follow instructions!
good job
But for the exhaust and air filter shrouds I had to remove the video was spot on! Would strongly suggest making sure the base of the oil stick is clean just in case it pops out.
Thank you for the very helpful video. Other than a few changes to socket sizes, such as 8 mm instead for a few bolts on my Troybilt mower, this video helped me get the job done so my mower was ready to go! I raised it up on a floor jack and jack stands and sat on a 5 gallon bucket instead of bending over. Great video, Jeff!!
Good job! Thanks for watching
your video definitely deserves an Oscar. thank you so much. camera work, position, explanation, no steps skipped like the small ones as to where each of the bolts and lighting were excellent.
With your help I was able to change the cord on my mower. Thanks so much for doing this video and sharing your knowledge!
Thanks. this was helpful. Getting the rope through the hole is the toughest part!
Hiiii I watch ur videos
Yes; read the comments. I suggested a while back ago (maybe a year or so ago) using a crochet hook to pull the cord thorough; then you do not have to cut the metal.
My is totally different I don't have to take nothing off but the three 5/16 bolts and now it won't rewind
Thanks! This video was perfect! Not too much talking, to the point, very good job on visual instructions!
Great video. Reviewed it before replacing pull rope on my 2008 MTD mower. Your video extractly fit my situation down to the screw sizes and locations. Made the job a piece of cake. Thank you
Thank you!! Very Helpful video. Fixed my lawn mower today. Job took about 45 min start to finish..
This is one of the best instructional videos I have seen on you tube. Thank You
Wow, thank you!
Thanks for watching
Thank you Jeff. Your video guided me through the process seamlessly! Much appreciation from British Columbia, Canada 🙂
Glad it helped!
Let me add my thanks. I had no idea how to d this and was delighted to be able to take care of the problem after watching your video.
Excellent video! Was holding off replacing the rope on my yard vac because i thought I'd have to pull the fuel line. Great work around. Thanks!
Glad it helped. thanks!
I just finished my repair, thanks to your very well made tutorial! Thanks - all the best!
good job! Thanks
I wasn’t sure If I had to pull all that off just for the pull rope. I watched you’re video and it did indeed help me and I learned a few tips. Thank you from down under. 👍🏻🤙🏻
NICE!
Thanks. It's a simple enough job but I'd never have thought that was the way to do it. Very useful!
thanks so much for the video!!,its people like you who make it easier for people like me!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! We successfully replaced our pull cord because of this vid.
Thanks for this great video
Took me 5 minutes to repair,
Correct socket sizes,
Video made it EZ
Thanks
Thank you.....this is EXACTLY what I was looking for and had no idea how to fix. My rope broke off inside where you tie the knot, so all I did was take it apart and tie a new knot in the end. The rest of the rope was fine. ;-)
Glad it helped!
Wow thanks,I just replaced my rope myself by watching your video!!!
Just replaced mine , same engine as yours, hadnt a clue until i watched this, cheers mate.
