He basically did describe it anyway. Just hold it in place with a screwdriver, put the cord in and tie and then when you remove the screwdriver it'd pull in the cord winding it in.
I pulled the rope right out of my weed whip this morning. Now instead of bashing it against a tree until I feel better and scaring off my family members I can fix it and look like a hero to all of them. You saved my marriage and my family! Hat's off!
Steve man you have saved me tons of money. I was a lost puppy till I found your channel. Its guys like you that make this world go around. The knowledge you are sharing has taken years to accumulate. I really appreciate ya.
My Mother phoned me and mentioned she was taking her lawnmower in to get serviced for a broken rope. I said dont do anything just yet until I check out UA-cam - And thankfully, your video was the first one I came across and it definitely did the trick!!! I thank you and My Mother definitely thanks you👍😉🇨🇦
Steve you saved my ass!! My wife was giving me hell about fixing the lawnmower and cutting the grass. No one actually went through the process of rewinding a new rope if yours broke off inside the spool. Thanks a million times!!!!
I've thanked you before and i'll thank you again... I've been dabbling in the small engine service and i'm self taught from guys like you. I find it a relaxing and sometimes frustrating hobby. You have taught me so much Steve and i appreciate it so much.
Thank you for this video which both showed me how to fix the starter on my rototiller and also removed any need for my "handy" brother-in-law to come fix it (and then stay for hours, eat my foot, drink my beer...)!
Hey Steve. Used this tutorial to fix the starter on a log splitter this morning. Your tip about pulling a foot of rope through first worked perfectly. Excellent content. Guys like you are why I use youtube. Keep up the good work.
I just come in to take a look at anything you're up to.... Kinda like a neighbour just dropping into a mate's shed to catch up and spin a story or two or just look at gear. My neighbour went away gold prospecting for three weeks and he gave me his mulcher Briggs Stratton and he pulled it a few times and it barely started for him.... And so next day I gave it a few pulls and it gave a couple of coughs before stopping and next pull broke the start cord.... Love your videos... Neat trick to pull the cord through an extra foot and then knot it.
Thank you Steve, I just got a free tiller with a broken starter. The first thing I thought of was you I have repaired starters before but you took it up a notch. Great program. I'm now a faithful follower, Steve E.
That worked like a charm. Couldn't believe it was that simple. My pull cord broke just yesterday, just an inch or so, used my old pull cord and now I can get back out there and till up the rest of my garden. BIG thanks from the U.P. of Michigan. Oh by the way, I also subscribed.
Not my exact problem, but this tutorial definitely saved me when I am out 10 miles away from the nearest Stihl shop, on a Sunday when everything is closed. This helped me right in the middle of a big job. A lot of people that share the same interests with me love your videos and tutorials. Thanks once again.
Thanks Steve. The pull start on my Ferris BGF48K mower broke on a job last week. My service guy wasn't really helpful and the disassembly of the spring and pawls got me a little hung up. Your video and careful instruction helped me get fixed and running again for only about 20 minutes and a new rope! Thanks again!
What's up Steve I'm Drew from Toledo Ohio :-) I've been messing around with the pull cord on my vintage 3.5 Toro for about a day and a half now and then something hit me.....my wife threw my phone at my head🤪 and I was like oh yeah Steve's Small Engine Saloon on UA-cam let me see if he has any quick tip fixes and like a pro I fixed it in less than 10 minutes thanks Steve keep the awesome helpful videos coming my brother stay safe and healthy✌
Hey, Steve. Thank you. My hubby is so busy, our push mower is at the bottom of his to-do list. I do what I can to reduce his list, and one of those is fixing/replacing the pull cord I broke. He got me a new cord, but no time to get to it. Now I'm off to do this and mow the back yard. Fingers crossed I do this right.
I've owned my landscape business for 36 years and been in the business 42 years and never saw anybody repair a starter the way you just did! I can't believe how well your method works! We always just kind of guessed at the length of the rope, how many turns to turn the spring. and then we would wrestle with the knots and threading like dealing with an rabid overcaffeinated earthworm. Thank you so much!
Amazing. I just did one the long way.. and when I put it back had wondered if there was not a simpler method. You showed it. With amazing clarity and simplicity. Thank you. You are the best in this business.
Your awesome man, I've got no small engine experience and you helped me fix my snowblower and saved me money, hopefully this vid will do the same, thanks in advance.
Saved me some time and money. Just broke the rope on my Stihl blower! My wife thinks I'm a genius now. LOL Thanks Steve for the best Small Engine Repair channel on UA-cam!!
Steve I always fix my own tools been doing tree work for 30 years and I always work on my own tools unless I get to a point where I just can't figure it out. I've wound them ropes up a lot of different ways pretty much depends on the situation at the time. hold them with Vise grip so they don't go back in using the screwdriver method so it doesn't unwind oh yeah but I have never seen it done like that I'm going to have to try that next time, unbelievable man, hats off. Almost Every time I see one of your channels I learn something new. But what I like about your show is even if I do know what you're doing and I have done it the same way . You still have an unbiased way of explaining the scenario for the people who really don't have a clue. You're very thorough an I enjoy watching how you teach people. You explain it so well even a caveman can do it.
Great Video! - along with all the others you do. You are a wealth of knowledge and really appreciate what you share and the detailed explanations that you provide. You have saved me many trips to the repair shop.
Thanks Bro. Have an old G100 Honda 2.2 and was having no luck replacing my broken pull start. Mac's Lawnmower wanted $35. I thought uh, no. Took it apart, learned how to rewind the spring, and now, I know how to re-spool the line properly. So Solly Mac......

were off grid and run solar BUT being in northern mn in the winter means.... clouds and snow. today is sunday, that means I make Sunday dinner... was in the middle of prepping pumpkin pie and the sun is no where to be seen... hubby went to start the gen and the rope snapped right up by the pull! ty for the video! turkey dinner and pumpkin pie at our house tonight brought to us by STEVE'S SMALL ENGINE REPAIR lol.... second time u have saved my bacon w your easy to follow and relaxed how to diy vids. I can't thank you enough ♡
Order a shirt, i did and when i town i cant tell you how many conversations ive had w lots of nice folks. I also live 80 mi off the grid and from the closest walmart, ace hardware and TSC. Steve has saved my ass and have asstd several others out there several times. Im pretty good w a wrench but, w steves videos, its made life easier. God bless you steve.
Thanks for the information. Plenty of folks out there posting on this kind of stuff, but I like your straightforward approach. Being from northern Michigan, I appreciate the subtle Canuck humor. Got my blower fixed, now I'm laughing!
Thank you, Steve! The pull cord on my snow blower has broken twice at the knot and I used the screwdriver method to hold it in place. The problem with doing it that way is the tension on the cord is always a little looser than I'd like. Your method restores the cord tension the way it came from the factory.
Thanks. This did save me money, and hassle. I watched another video that suggested burning a grove in the pulley to help tighten the cord. Your method was much simpler.
I'd wager Steve could retire if everyone he has helped gave $1 per time he helped them. I'd have a couple dollars in that kitty myself. He's one of them fellers that if'n he cain't fix it, it wasn't broke!
Thanks so much for this, we had a power outage here in NH the other day and upon trying to start the generator the rope broke. It was only the first nine inches that broke off so in that "emergency situation" I was able to use what was left to make it function thanks to your video. Of course after getting it up and running the power company got the electricity back up and running. But I'm forever grateful for the valuable knowledge on how to do that simple repair for the rest of my life. Thanks again!
SIr you should write a book. Or maybe make video type of instruction that you could select the problem and your repair video pop up. You are a wonderful instructor. Your work is appreciated. Thank You
another spot on video. The only problem I had on my cub cadet push mower was getting the end of the string through both holes that didn't line up very well. I rigged up part of a small wire flag to get it through.
Steve, thank you. You have the very best videos. Clear, easy to follow and dozens of tips I have never heard or seen before. Hopefully, the local tech schools in your area is paying you to each their students.
Steve, this was a great video that help me accomplish replacing my old with new rope. I had my iPad near by to check on when I wanted to make sure I was doing it right. Thank you, thank you, thank you my fellow American for taking the time to make this and all your videos, you helped a 66 year old broke dick retired Marine who was running out of F-Bombs! 👏👏🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺!
This was a great instructional video! I was going to take my lawn mower to one of the local lawn repair shops to replace the torn starter rope but egads one shop wanted $85 the other $100! I said to myself no way.......I'm going to fix this myself. I went to Lowes (Home Depot has it too) and purchased a starter rope which came with a new handle for only $5.98! I went online a found this video and bingo did it myself. There's satisfaction in doing a job yourself and not paying someone else! Thanks Steve.
The algo is REAL! This vid came reccomended EXACTLY at the moment I was cussing out my dogs LITERALLY for chewing up the string 😂 such a BLESSING IN DISGUISE & on the Sons day 😮 holy spirits listening like ai GODS 🧘🏽♂️
hey thanks for posting this video. had a broken lawn mower cord, brought a new. I followed your instructions. now I'm mowing the grass. you saved me a lot of money.
Thank you so so much my husband is away right now so I’m having too do stuff my self an my mower rope just broke I had no idea that I had too do it this way u have helped me more then u will ever know thanks
Great tip/hack there buddy. Subscribed :) Question: The wife was running the mower (older B&S Classic 35). Tank and carb fell off. Bolts vibrated loose. I put it back together again, but it won't run. At best it fires a bit out of the air intake. I can't figure out what the hell is wrong. Any ideas? If there's supposed to be a rubber O-ring on the carb sealing the carb and intake stud, then she lost it.
Hi Steve, Just wanted to say a BIG thank you. I'm a contractor in England, and your video was the best one I found on this subject and helped me to get back on the green! Cheers Mate!!
Dude, I've been working in the yard all day, in the hot sun. Just had a nice cold beer, trying to figure out if I bring my mower into the repair shop or.... do I try and fix this myself... I"m not even sure if my model is similar to the ones you showed, but I'm just about to open her up. find out and fix it myself !!! Hope my like and comment helped you out! Great video, thank you!
Man o man you describe and show " How to " so well ! Makes it so easy to go in our shops and fix things right away without getting frustrated ! And also to drink a cold one or two at the same time ! Regards Steve !
Thank you Steve, Here in the UK with an old Qualcast 32, either can't get the parts or Costa Fortuna - do it yourself - without screwing up the spring....worked a treat!!
Generator rope breaks: Me: Honey the rope broke Wife: (with stink eye) What are you looking at me for, FIX IT!!! *(Gets rid of wife)* Great video! Keep up the great work.

I have struggled with these for years using the screwdriver through the vent hole method. This is SO much easier. I just turned 69 and am not ashamed to say that I am still learning. Thanks for sharing your wealth of skill and practical knowledge.
STEVE!!..... YOU, are the Best on YT for all things Small Engine... barr None!! Thanks for this tip.... I've got 5 - "twice stroked" powered stuff, and 2 - 4 stroked and 3 of my Stihl "saw's" need new ropes... this tip Will save me from from drinking any "left over" beers you might have hanging around!! lol PS: What part of Canada are in/around?? eh? I'm south of the 49th parallel from ya, but worked, lived, played and married up there for quite a while.... all my mothers side of the family are up there - spread out from NS (Cape Breton) to BC. Keep up the Great work... really appreciate all the work & time that you put into your videos & sharing your vast knowledge of small "powerplants". PS: My background is Diesel Engine Design & Theory (4 year degree) specializing in 2 cycle - sprinkled with nearly 20 years of drag racing (NHRA - Div.6 & 7) mostly during my years in Canada and building race engines. Have a Great week.... as best you can, anyway, in this totally messed up world and countries that we now have to put up with.... if not, then have a beer or three, on me!! lol Thanks again! PPS: I've got several hundred feet of No.5 - 550 lb test.. paracord - you think that would be sufficient for starter rope for my 2 strokes? lol It's even Orange, so it's color coordinated to match my Stihl's. : )
Steve, thank you for posting these videos. I have watched almost all of them and I have learned a lot from you. Your information is right on the money. Please keep em' coming and I'll keep giving you the thumbs up!
You saved me Steve!!! Went to start the log splitter and the cord ripped right out of it. After looking up a video I had it all back together in 10 minutes. Thank you!
Love your your UA-cam videos! Even though this is 5 years old it was super valuable today as all your UA-cam videos are. Keep up the great work, I'm having a cold one for you, thanks!

Sounds like an Air leak or mislaid O Ring somewhere...

Well we're all screwed then. 10mm socket? That's always the one that gets lost.
Thank you Steve, Here in the UK with an old Qualcast 32, either can't get the parts or Costa Fortuna - do it yourself - without screwing up the spring....worked a treat!!
Right on Brian...
Will 550 cord work?
Probably, as long as it is the proper size... Just make sure you cut it off your wife's parachute and not yours!!!!
Great sense of humor. Love it!

I have struggled with these for years using the screwdriver through the vent hole method. This is SO much easier. I just turned 69 and am not ashamed to say that I am still learning. Thanks for sharing your wealth of skill and practical knowledge.
Excellent!
Steve, you're awesome, I was on a job when.my rope broke and you just save me a trip to the repair shop.
Right on Will!
Tried several time to install starter rope, did get it right until I watched your video thank you, thank you.
Didnt
Glad it helped
