Replacing a Push Mower Start Cord ~ Rick's Tips

- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- Hello Everybody! This week, I am faced with a frayed starter pull cord on my Troy Bilt, Brigs & Stratton 670 series, push mower. So I need to figure out how to fix this because if I can't start it, I can't use it and my back yard is starting to look like a jungle with all the rain we've been having!
It took a while to research how to get this done and I looked high and low for a visual aid to help me understand how to do it. However, to no avail, there was nothing. I have read instructions and done the work here for you. If you have this problem now or in the future, don't think you have to purchase a new mower. I have shown in this video how you can do it yourself.
The most important thing is to use common sense! Go slowly and use the proper tools. If you have never picked up a screwdriver before, this is probably not the project you should test your skills on. Overall, for an experienced handy person, this will not be too difficult, but it will take time and concentration. You will need to take care to remember where everything came from so it can go back where it belongs.
You can purchase replacement pull cords for mowers at most home improvement centers that sell mowers. However, I try to use what I have on hand and the cord I had in the shed, was equal to what they sell in the store. The replacement comes with the cord and a new plastic pull handle. The cost was around $15.00. I replaced mine for nothing except the time I spent doing it. In the end, my mower works for another day and I helped you understand how to replace this pesky part.
A lawnmower is an investment. Even if you purchased a lower end model, you still spend hard earned money on it. It is important to maintain what you have and keep it working. I certainly don't think this piece of machinery should be considered disposable, however a lot of people would just chuck it and go buy a new one because it needed a new pull cord or a sharpened blade or a new spark plug, if they could not figure out what the problem was. I know you are probably not those folks, but there are those type of people in the world.
I hope this helps you to fix your mower if you should encounter this particular problem. Now I have decided to rebuild the carburetor on this mower so you know that will be yet another video in the future.
I hope you learned something useful and I hope this helps you!
Have a Handy Week!

10 years later an now i have the same exact lawn mower an your video helped me tremendously. Getting the rope through the whole was a pain but i did it. Thanks Rick. It only cost me $3.85 in rope💯💯
Thank you so much! My daughter and I were able to fix our mower with the help of your video! Our biggest struggle was feeding the string through the 2 narrow holes. My daughter had a brilliant idea to use a straw to feed the string through the straw snd then through the 2 holes.
Thank you, Rick. Yours was the only video I was able to understand fully.
Absolute champion followed ur instructions and after all that taking apart, find out at the end, the pulley mechanism was under the cover lol, but at least I know how to pull the mower apart now, thank you sir
Thank you Rick. I’m a 62 year old grandma that’s cheap and enjoys fixing things. You made your video so clear and simple. I’m going to stick with you from now on.😃
Thank You !
This video is still saving $ for folks all over the country! Thank you!
All over the world also :P
Thank you, Rick! That's the exact same mower as mine. You made my task easy. Sending much gratitude.
thank you ive got the exact same mower and my pull cord broke but i couldn’t find any videos until yours tyvm
I had watched another video to replace the pull cord but it was a different model than the one in your demonstration. Those rivets threw me. I was worried I'd have to take apart the whole engine. But your explanation was clear and spot on. California has so much rain my backyard lawn was a forest. Now with your help I am slowly getting it back to normal. Thanks.
Fixed a mower today after watching this video once and never taking a mower apart before. Great video, thanks so much!
Your help was great . I have never replaced anything like this before in my life. With your help the job was done in 45 minutes. You saved me time and about $60 for it to be repaired at my local small engine mechanic.
Thanks again for your help.
Thanks Rick. They quoted me $175 to fix. 6 minutes of your video, $6 for a new cord at Walmart, my tool box, and it's working brand new again 😊😊😊😊 I love you tube. Thanks
THANK YOU!
Whoever "they" is needs to be deleted from your phone. That is outrageous!
If i could make $175 to do these repairs i could make probably $4000/day doing this all day....OUTRAGEOUS
Glad that someone tackled a Toro with a difficult to reach pull cord. All the others were so simple doing a video was a waste of time. I have the same type mower as you and when I removed the cover to find rivets instead of bolts I freaked. Thank you for being there.
I applaud you sir!!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 i am only 25 years old and have never done remotely ANYTHING like this in my entire life, my dad was the handyman lol with your help though, i was able to get it done and mow my overgrown Florida lawn!! Thank you so much for this helpful video!!!! ♥️
thank you so much...I just move to this house and my neighbor gave me this exact mower and the string broke in half
now I will replace it with confidence
Just to think this video is almost 10 yrs old, still helping people!
Thanks Rick. Your video is the only one that tells the viewer those are rivets and generally cannot be removed. I found the rest of your video the most instructional out there for my older GTS6 Toro lawnmower. Thank you again!
That was a perfect match to my mower and in 10 minutes I replaced my pull string! Thanks for the instructions! I didn’t know what to do when I saw those rivets. That’s when I googled and found this video. Happy mowing!!!
Thank you so much Rick - my rope broke on my lawnmower just last week and had no idea what we were going to do and then here you come and demonstrate how to fix it.THANKS!
You're quite welcome! Hope I was able to help!
This video is AWESOME and I used it to take apart the exact same mower you show to reattach the pull cord at the recoil mechanism where it broke at the knot. Those darned rivets, tho. Took it all apart and just saved a bunch of money. I am a handy 72 year old widow and do a lot of stuff on my own with the boys gone. Thank You So Much, dude!
Omg thank you so much for this video. My son had plowed thru tall grass and these two little white plastic things had fallen out (which I discovered from your video). I put them back I and now she starts again.
MILSPEC 550 cord works dandy. Readily available, durable, perfect fit.
Helped me change my cord for female nurse who does not know anything it was amazing to be able to do it with help of your video
Nice video. Very helpful. My mower is a Toro Recycler 21" Self-Drive, but has a B&S 6.0HP engine, and the part positioning and bolts were exactly the same. I ended up using some parachute jump cord I already had, threaded it into the housing directly off the spool, and waited to cut it to length until I crimped the lead stopper back on the new cord and got the handle knotted up.
Many thanks for the video. +1 for not needing to drain the gas tank.
Rick rides to the rescue....again! This time, although half of our socket set had mysteriously gone AWOL,my wife and I managed to reset the pull cord tension, resulting in a first time start. Thanks Rick!
this video was the absolute best to help my fiancé and I to fix our mower! so grateful for you!! thank you for taking the time to make this, it was perfect!
Rivets slowed me up until I found this video. I sincerely thank you for taking the time to present this information. You helped me alot. Thank you again.
I gotta hand it to you, your video miraculously had the exact same type of B&S Motor w/ pull start mechanism. I went from going-to-pay to have it done to Got It Done in 10 min, and half the time was tool prep. Thanks!
Thanks Rick. My son and I replaced the pull cord on my Troy Bilt push mower in about 30 minutes without using a single profanity thanks to your detailed instructions and visuals. The hardest part was rethreading the cord into the coil...just melted the tip of the cord to make it suffer and shaped it with a hammer. It went through the first time after that.
Thanks...I would have never gotten those rivets out...and the tension setting was invaluable..
I REALLY appreciate this video. You're correct that there isn't much documentation on fixing this mower and I need to get at the pull cord assembly. This told me exactly what I needed to know. Thanks!
I just fixed my lawn mower. Followed your example and it worked perfect.
Enjoyed watching and learning from your video, my son and I had a memorable moment restringing the lawnmower, Thanks Rick
Boy howdy! You saved the day. Thanks to you I got my mower back up and running. I only wish I'd watched your video before I went and tried it myself. I coulda saved a bunch of time and trouble. (I undid the coil and had to wind it all back up again.) Thanks a bunch!
Great video. My Troy Built TB210 mower pull cord broke and your video provided all the answers. I watched it once, had my 11 year old watch ir and we did it in about an hour including the trip to the hardware store for a new rope (and i replaced the bolts). Thanks again for a great video.
David
Thanks rick. They charge 90$ to do that at my local mower shop. You helped me fix it for 3 bucks.
Finally tied down my son,he's got the tools....job done, thanks Rick!
Thank you so much. Your step by step instructions helped fixed our mower and we are back in business!
Great video. It walked me through how to change my rip cord, took 1/2 hour including the trip to the store to get the cord. Thanks!
thanks rick! Just made me look competent in front of my gf's family!
Curiosity is killing me bro. Are y'all still together after 5yrs?
omg. First this is a great video of a horribly engineered mower.
I've watched five videos of replacing pull cords. The other four videos featured mowers with pull cords repaired by removing two screws, maybe 3. That's it! This model of mower requires removing the gas tank, and moving the oil dipstick. Then there is the removal of two screws, 3 bolts (so you don't have to drill out and re-rivet!), and then a fourth bolt that isn't even the same size as the other 3. Just...wow. Again, this is a wonderful video but the mower is a PITA.
Thank you for posting this video ! My cord broke off the other day, and I had no clue....luckily the mower you worked on in the video is the exact same one as mine. My cord was broke at the very end, in the engine part, so I just took what was left and used that, since I didn't have anything new around. Great instructions. Couldn't have done it with out you. Works like a charm !
Thanks for this video. It took me an hour to replace the cord with no problems. Very detailed video.
Thanks Rick, this video really helped me out a lot. I too coud not find anything in the manuals as to how to change the starter cord, followed your video and all worked out for me....thanks again for taking the time to put this together. Best regards, Roger
Rick you are the man took me about 30 mins getting the string through was the hardest part you saved the day!!
+jdanie038 Awesome! Glad it helped!
Ridiculous that you have to do all that to replace the cord though. Thanks for the great tutorial
I a girl but my Daddy taught me well. I can do most small engine & household repairs but it's nice to have a refresher. Thank you.
2redbird1 why does the cord pull on me hard back
Thank you for the video. I had no idea how to fix the chord part. I never thought about winding it up first. I have the same mower as you. I got the mower turned on and everything!
Thanks! I have the same model where the starter is riveted to the case. Couldn't figure out how to get it off until I saw your video.
Thank yo Rick! Saved me so much money. New cord with handle was only $5 and only too about 30 minutes to fix.
Thank you, the only video I could find with the B&S with rivets.
Thanks!
I've replaced pull cords before, but I saw the rivets and thought who would design it like this, thought the shroud might come off, now I have confirmation!
Thanks a lot! Just replaced the cord on my Troy Bilt. Easy peasy. Would've been more difficult without your fine video.
Hey Rick. This was the exact problem I had with my mower. Thanks to your video I was able to fix it and add a fancy new pull cord. Thank you again and look forward to watching more videos from you.
Thanks, Rick! Decided to try the pull-cord repair myself after watching a couple other videos. At the last minute I noticed your video sitting in the "Up Next" section, with a picture of an engine that looked just like mine. Glad I clicked on it, since I have the same Briggs & Stratton engine on a Toro mower.
Cannot thank you enough. If I had popped the top off mine and seen those rivets holding it on, I probably would have just given up and taken it in somewhere to be fixed. But with your video, it was a piece of cake.
I know its been years since you posted this, but THANK YOU for the great instructions!
Fantastic video! I had the same thing happen to my pull cord, but could not figure out how to remove the large black metal piece under the red plastic cover. After 20 minutes I figured it out, and I would not have even attempted this without the help of your video. Thanks!!!!
Used this video a while back, just watched again to refresh memory for same mower, thanks Rick.
Thank you for making this video. It is aiding my repair job. I appreciate the time.
I actually have the same type/model mower so this was awesome! Total time for the project was about 1 hour. I had a small pick tool that came in handy to fish the paracord through. Thanks, and subscribed!
Thank You!
Rick, this video was perfect! It really helped me get the job done. Thank you.
Thank you so much for posting this. I followed your instructions and it worked out great. 🙏💓
Thank you soooooo much. I am useless at this stuff but your video helped me repair my mower. 🤩
Great job Rick! I have been doing this for years and your helping lots of folks!👍👍😉
Rick, in parentheses, please mention that this is the riveted 6.75 bs Toro set up! Thank you so much for this video! I’m replacing my cord today because of your most needed video!
Thank you, i couldn't find anything to repair my mower and i cant find a repair shop so this helps a lot
Thanks for the video. My cord is not frayed, but it locked up and will not let me start the mower. At least your video showed me how to take the mower apart, if it comes to that. I am hoping that it locked up as a safety measure due to wet grass stuck in the blades. We will see, I am going to inspect now. Thanks Rick.
If you could have seen my face when I saw those rivets. Searched a few times before I found this great video. Mine is the exact same and built in July 2008.
my mower always break around the summer time when i need it the most. i thought about just replacing my mower. but i just may try to replace the string now. thanks for this tutorial.
First time for me and you made it so easy. Thanks Rick. I'm only 73yrs if I can do it anyone can.
Thnaks for the step by step. Will be trying to repair mine today!
I was able to fix mine! But ended up with only 2 extra screws!😝
Excellent video! Thanks for the step-by-step tutorial on how to get this done!
Sir,
I appreciate the help. Did exactly what you did, and my mower up and running. Thank you.
Thank you so much. This applies perfectly to my Toro recycler. The bolts are even in the same places. I fixed it in 15 mins.
Thanks Rick, even a dipstick like me should be able to manage the job! I'll have to borrow some tools in the meantime and will let you know when the jobs done.
Thanks Rick. I have the exact same mower. Your instructions were dead on! Great job and thanks for taking the time to do the video!
Heyy Rick, Nice tutorial... great info. It's always good to get a good explanation of how things work. Take care!!!
Thanks for this tutorial!!! We finished our repair and thanks to you our cost was only $3.97
Rick, thanks so much. Poor design on Toro's part. You're a scholar and a gentleman.
Great video! Told me exactly what I needed so I did not need to buy a riveter. I was hoping to use this excuse to finally go to Harbor Freight and by one though.
LOL, you should have!
Perfect! That's like my mower. Worked great!
Thanks, Rick! Just finished replacing in about 10 minutes thanks to this vid.
+Mike Hommé Awesome! Glad it helped!
Thank you. It was the perfect one. Just what I needed. Great video. I was looking everywhere. It's Sunday and I prayed , God please let me find the one for my lawnmower before that heat hits. Arkansas Summer is no joke..
Would have never been able to figure this out without this video. Thanks!
Thanks Rick... I also needed help on how do replace the cord. Helpful video deserves a like. Thanks again!
Thanks Rick. This starter cord assembly was exactly like my John Deere JS 61. Nicely done.
Ahhhh! I put the chord through and tied it off first and then wound it up and put top back on lol it started, it just wouldn't pull the chord back into place... Doh! Thanks much for the great video! This is my first mower, it's a 20 yr old Murray hand me down from my grandpa.
The is a great video. Thanks. I got it all finished up, The lawn mower started, and then the cord that I just bought snapped. Ha! Guess I'll be doing this again.
Thank you, Rick! I stopped to answer a text message, and went back to start it and pulled mine completely out. It started, and I realized I was going to have to finish the rest of the yard in one pass. heh
Now I'm not worried about this project. Thanks again, buddy!
Ouch! Sounds like your repair will be a little more involved! Once you get to the rewind mechanism you'll have to see if it's either stuck or broken. Good Luck either way!
Hey Rick... Great job! Exactly what I needed to know. A great way to top it off would be to start the mower at the end of the lesson.
I actually need to rebuild the carburetor on this very mower. That video we be coming soon! :)
Masterful work Sir. My mower exactly. Help me out a ton. Thank you for posting this.
I have this same exact mower. It is a bit more to take apart but still pretty easy to fix.
Thanks for the video! This definitely helped me when I needed to change the Rope out on my Craftsman Push Mower.
Yah, needed this, my cord is broke on mine and just did not want to pay out the nose to get it fixed, kudos!
Thank you so much! actually got to use tools my grandfather left me when we popped our cord!
Good job on the video. Extremely helpful in repairing my mower. Saved me labor costs! Thanks.
Thanks thanks thanks. Best video i found to change starter handle... everything came out just great
Thank you , note: could not remove tank (full) so, I removed the top screws only and tipped the tank toward the back & used a ratchet extension to remove the cover . Worked out great !
Thank you. Your video was so helpful. I like the reassembly at the end also.
I'll be doing this later today, thanks for the video!! It was so easy to follow.
thanks rick !!! i fixed my troy-BILT tuff cut 210 ... you HAVE a new subscriber !!
