Back when I lived at my parents house I came home to a wide open front door while I knew my parents were on vacation. Sweeping the house with a moasin nagant seems really funny until you figure out how good the bayonet is at opening shower curtains.
This is one of the most informative and powerful pieces of content I’ve seen on this subject matter. From framing the decision making formulas, to breaking down the elements of compassion driving what a person is really fighting for; really powerful. Thank you.
Years ago Travis was talking about the time he spent sweeping for illegal weapons in homes. He related the experiences he had, and the things he did, the lives he ended. He said something that hit with the weight of a planet..."If I had smiled more, I would have had to kill far less".
I had to go through 20 comments before I saw someone who actually listened to what Travis said and reflected upon it. There is some powerful words spoken here that goes against a lot of what is pushed by social media.
@@Mr2greys The things that Travis said here, and has said previously, don't give anyone motive or authority to engage in chest thumping or braggadocio. They don't lend themselves to trending on social media.
I think that’s most of us. A small percentage of people have actually been in a gunfight and lived to tell the tale, even fewer with multiple under their belts. We all like to think we’d do well in a tense and high pressure situation, but you can only know that if you actually experience it for yourself. That’s why military, specifically SF units, go through reps and reps of force on force training to stress inoculate as much as possible and get their fundamental gun fighting skills down to second nature.
I've been in several high stress situations from skydiving to scuba to gun play (kicking doors) to be humbled with a stroke at 57. Destroyed my sense of survivability. Really sucks. You never know.
The story posted about the dog that jumped into the boiling hot springs at Yellowstone, a guy tried to jump into save the dog, they tried to stop him, he said the hell I won't. Dog died, the guy died slower and said it was a mistake. Don't go rushing in deadly situations.
To me Stoicism isn't lack of emotion, rather quiet the opposite. Stoicism is having some pretty deep emotions and not reacting to them. You make clear and intentioned choices, while keeping in perspective what is actually important. It is like how bravery is not the lack of fear, but making decisions in spite of it. in the context of this discussion, a gunfight you don't have to get in is a gun fight you win. This is great shit guys, more of this please.
I've read a lot of what the Stoic philosophers wrote, and it actually goes even another layer deeper than what you lay out here. You're supposed to go at the things that cause your emotions and accept those things as good, bad, or ugly, and be grateful that this has been a chance to learn a lesson from whatever just happened to you.
I view home defense guns like seatbelts and airbags in a car. You want them in case SHTF. But I will always choose avoiding the crash and not needing to use my seatbelts and airbags if possible.
Exactly. It isnt a lack of crying, its knowing when to cry. _Real men_ will cry at the loss of a brother, but they will not cry during the fight. They will cry later, when the day is done, and there is nothing more than needs doing.
I'm a vet of the 04 Fallujah campaign and a 12 year police vet. Current firearms\tactics instructor. I can teach tactics all day long, but what I want to impress on these younger guys is exactly what's contained in this video, and I never quite figured out how. Thanks guys, this means so much.

The first example he gave is the idea I've always held... The best way to survive a gunfight is to not get in a gunfight. You pull up to your house and see someone is in the process of breaking in, just call the cops. Keep your head on a swivel, take in information, and don't engage. Cemeteries are filled with brave men, they don't need one more. Your shit can be replaced. Of course the math changes when you have people in the house, or they come in while you're home. But if you can avoid the fight, avoid it.
I have no "compassion" for a guy like Haley who brings a 5.56 caliber rifle... lol that isn't even his own rifle and isn't even sighted in for "DMR work" only to try to use it for that purpose and then complain and ask for a SAW. Just think if those 15 years of training actually taught him to bring the right rifle for the job he wouldn't have to be running back and forth with belts of ammo if he actually could hit what he was shooting at. Again this "incident" of Ben "Mookie" Thomas spotting for Haley as he repeatedly missed over and over again was probably the #1 reason mookie quit doing contracting work in Iraq. Ben can feel free to stop by and drop off a comment anytime. I know he has a channel so don't go white-knighting for anyone this time. If it matters that much to them, they can make a reply I'm sure they read the comments I know Haley has about 2 sock puppet accounts he used for his own videos.
Hate is not the only reason for war. In fact it is the least common. Food, minerals, energy, port access, strategic teritory, political disagreement, alliances pulling you into other conflicts... wars are fought for these reasons all the time, weather on the streets of chicago or on the eurasian steppe or in the desert of syria.

This is absolutely gold. The advices here are timeless and so often we forget about what truly matters and how it’s not about just the gunfight itself, but it’s all about the mentality, consequences, and purpose of it all. Profound video. Very glad i watched this whole video. Thank you.

Man, Travis is extremely cerebral in the way he parsed all of this out. It's an uncommon mindset to want to break everything down and think about the parts the way he does.
He over-tones everything, to make himself seem of high intellect. Probably treated the man next to him like dog shit and that is what makes him so insecure.
Absolutely not what I was taught as an infantryman. There was so much hate and anger behind the intent to kill. Yet this statement poses a different heart posture and it’s 100% more wholesome, morally/mentally sustainable, and probably effective. What a fantastic statement! Flipped my philosophy 180 degrees.

Travis is speaking some serious smart hard truth. It's hard to maintain emotional control and also hard to open yourself up to the emotional energy from others. Being able to understand those incoming emotions and smartly manipulate them for good is something we should all strive for
As a father, husband, protector of the house, this solid advice for all men young and old. This is something this generation needs to hear and understand.
I think that's so many people. Even when you look at small-scale conflict; a couple guys in the bar, husband and wife, or even two childhood friends fighting over games. It's always an imbalance in ego - who can be right, who win, who prevail. Those times where one person walks in without ego, it totally deflates the scenario. I always think of the bar. It could be getting caught looking at a guy's girl, or bumping into one. You can always go to toes, but an apology, a "I thought she was an old classmate, sorry," goes miles. I think we just like to lead with action. We're junkies. Ha
That was the fastest 30 minutes of my life. So much wisdom. My dad (not Travis Haley) was in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in a federal capacity with the FBI. He did a lot of things over there that he wasn't about to burden my 10 year old self with, but talking with him as I got older, he said a lot of the things that Mr. Haley said in this video. His attitude toward combat, self defense and fighting in general has always been, from my recollection, in line with Mr. Haley's beliefs. Very cool video. Awesome discussion. I'd like to thank both Mike and Mr. Haley for their service to this country both in the military, as well as in this video. It's crucially important to train young men in this way in my opinion.
Great video. As a civilian who prays I'll never need to use this knowledge, I'm thankful to guys like you. Wish every person in uniform, any uniform, hears your words. God bless and God bless America.
Of everything said in this video, the question, "do you have the courage to be imperfect?" resonated the most. The firearm and defense culture focuses too much on the egotism and bravado of gun fighting and not enough on the vulnerability and compassion needed to survive before, during, and after the fight.
Playing paintball or airsoft can teach you alot no matter how many people down play it. It will show just how fast you can get smoked by a 12 year old with no combat skills.
I used to play airsoft when I had more time to drive out to fields on weekends. I think it's good force on force practice for CQB environments, but it kind of skews the "Risk vs time". A lot of "Speedsoft" players will do high risk things that you generally don't see. Also for military applications, you usually have someone watching your back. If you do a 1 vs 1 scenario, it does teach you how to corner your opponent, and to try to find angles on how to attack your opponent and shoot under stress from awkward positions.
@@MrNgMichael yeah I haven't played in years but I've been wanting to get back into it. For me it just showed me sometimes all the training and planning dont mean shit. Stray bullets can find there mark and the least like person can end you.

Learned a lot form Haley, but the most important is..."it depends.." He didn't pretend to have the perfect answer, he made sure we knew that the answer to every situation was completely dependent on circumstances.
I especially liked Travis Haley's video on the "300 blackout" where he said cool things like _"stuff is going to break"_ even though I haven't become aware of any such problems with 300 blackout.... the things you do for the views, such hard work. In that same video it has ZERO references to 300 whisper, and the actual intended use of it prior to it being called 300BLK... such "transparency" lol. But hey your taking the word of a guy who took another dudes rifle to a gunfight that wasn't even sighted in and he asked for a SAW because he couldn't hit anything and the guy spotting for him quit contracting shortly thereafter... so yeah that's the information quality here.
Critical thinking is a lost art, which is sad because it used to be commonplace. Logic and reason used to dictate a man's life, but in today's world it's emotions and memes.
I love the level of authenticity, honesty, and professionalism you both have in sharing your experiences and knowledge with us. I always take something away from your experiences. Awesome stuff
The fact Travis has joined Mike on his channel and shared his experience & wisdom openly, while also revealing their relation (if it wasnt already known), speaks volumes.

Agree...more of this please.

"The most important thing to have in a gunfight is compassion." - Travis Haley Thats as good as it gets right there.
@@swj719 , Yours was not a popular comment, but it was the best; because it showed intelligence and maturity.
Biggest thing I've run into in violent scenarios is my personal ego. It's hard to think around my emotions at times like that.
I got some bad news for you, champ
I think that's so many people. Even when you look at small-scale conflict; a couple guys in the bar, husband and wife, or even two childhood friends fighting over games. It's always an imbalance in ego - who can be right, who win, who prevail. Those times where one person walks in without ego, it totally deflates the scenario.
I always think of the bar. It could be getting caught looking at a guy's girl, or bumping into one. You can always go to toes, but an apology, a "I thought she was an old classmate, sorry," goes miles.
I think we just like to lead with action. We're junkies. Ha
