Was once told at the range that everyone is calm at the range and shoots fairly well, but what differentiates some are how they can control their nerves and adrenaline during a real gun fight. I’m an advocate for people conceal carrying, provided they take the proper training and practice, practice and more practice. Great video gentlemen, thank you. 👍
just going to the range IS a form of stress innoculation. if gunfire breaks out, people freak out because they've never heard it, it's scary AF, and panic sets in just based on the bang. people who go to the range a lot get used to comnunicating with each other through gunfire. also, recoil management means spending hundreds/thousands of rounds learning the pulse of your firearm, such that discharging it accurately & repeatedly will no longer be challenging. shooting guns safely & routinely is definitely a step towards acclamating to the stress of shooting, which is nowhere near the same thing as the stress of a gun fight; but it's a step.
I experienced auditory exclusion during a wrestling match in high school. I was nervous and enraged simultaneously and it was insane. Loud ass room turned into just my own breathing and heartbeat.
It happened every football game I played as a kid. High school stadium packed with 10000 people screaming, and I can hear the call the QB is making. Never though about that before your comment.
I feel like this happens when I spar because there’s usually music playing but when when the round starts I couldn’t tell you what song was on. My brain just focuses on sparring and nothing else, kinda crazy
"I've seen the worst of conflict, and want to avoid it at all cost." More people need to hear this. I overheard a conversation between some customers at work the other day, and they were talking about civil conflict, and they were confident that it won't come to where they live, and if it does, they'll shoot back. I interjected and said, "if it comes to that, we all lose." Their response? "Hell no! Texas is gonna win." There seems to be a growing number of people thirsty for chaos, and they have no idea what they're ordering from the bar.
I'm guilty of wanting to see the "bad guys" fall at my own hand. I watch these experienced men to keep my expectations in the realms of reality. I hope we never have to take this to our own streets.
I'm an automotive locksmith. In 2020, I went to make a key for a stranded car in Memphis TN. The guy set me up and got my guard down with the initial phone call, because he said I was referred to him by someone else. When I arrived on scene (at an apartment complex in broad daylight), there was a guy leaning up against the front of the car. There was another guy about 10 yards away giving the appearance of talking on a cellphone. I exited my vehicle through the passenger sliding door and walked around the front of my vehicle. By the time I got to front decal of my vehicle, the guy on the phone closed the distance with a pistol drawn and actually pushed it into the back of my head. At this point, the guy who was leaning up against the hood, drew a pistol and pointed it in my face. The back door of the car then flew open and another guy had an AR style rifle pointed at me. They were all yelling commands to give them everything I have. I gave verbal compliance by telling them, "relax guys I'll give yall everything I have. Just relax. Here's my wallet and keys." At this point I reached into my pockets and threw my wallet and keys on the pavement at their feet. Right when my stuff hit the ground I bolted in the opposite direction at an angle to avoid the rifle guy, as he remained in the driver's side backseat. They didn't fire a shot, and they just ended up leaving the apartment complex. Gotta remain aware of strategies to retreat with your life when you are outgunned. Cheers. Stay frosty, maniacs.
I always qualified Expert Marksman in the Army, and I'm still that accurate, but that's only one part of a complete combat skill set. If you can shoot, but you're not mentally and physically in shape, you're still going to fail. That firearm in your hands isn't the weapon. It's a tool. You are the weapon, and you need to sharpen yourself.
@Stevospeedo I'm pretty good at jokes! You're right though. After reading it several times, I just don't see it LoL ... Perhaps you're just not very good at telling them?
@Stevospeedo Ah! I see! I knew there was no actual joke there. You were just being snarky as I thought. Well, the joke is on you since I never actually said any such thing, or even alluded to that being the case. In fact what I said alludes to it not being a feat of strength. Accuracy is just one part.
Bottom line: train train train. If you have confidence in your training and believe it has prepared you to engage an adversary effectively by giving you the tools to win, that goes a long way toward building the kind of confidence you need. One very important element in training is being efficient and confident in your shoot/don't shoot scenarios. Too many LEO'S have died because they waited too long to act and end the fight, because either they found out that they were actually unwilling to shoot another human being, or they were afraid of presumed legal consequences. When I was a LEO, I put my house in my wife's name. I can truthfully say that I never was afraid of having to make a life or death decision. I always knew where the threshold was, and was committed beforehand to observe it. Lastly, as a now elderly civilian, I intentionally keep a low profile. Still deadly, but more or less off the radar of most people. Thanks for a good vid.
"... don't pee into the wind..." single greatest piece of advice I've ever had. Will def save me a lot of strange looks when people would smell piss on me. 10/10
Yesterday the wind blew my shirt flap over while I was pissing. Splattered piss all over my pants and shirt, too. And my shoes. Watch that nasty pisser!
If you've ever lost a simunition gunfight because you were THAT dumbass who peeked his head around the corner to see if the coast was clear, go ahead and give my forehead another massive welt
Combat stress is so much different than any other stress. You can’t truly be able to regulate stress in a situation like that until you’ve been there before and you’ve accepted death as a very real possibility. After that, it becomes manageable because you’re numb to it
Auditory exclusion is the fancy way of saying that "if someone breaks into your house in the middle of the night and you have to shoot - don't worry, you won't go deaf."
@ about 18:45 “avoiding a fight and you got the win” is one of Sun Tsu’s best tactics from The Art of War: “The greatest victory is that which requires no battle.” And it is one of the hardest tactics to master. Far more often than not, engaging brain before putting mouth or physical action in gear is what will save you or your team’s bacon. This is especially true if you are by yourself.
China has literally been winning World War III for well over a decade and their enemies have no damn clue that they're losing a war. It's genius. Same with Civil War II. Most Republicans have no idea a war is being waged. They think it's politics. They erroneously think that explosions are required for war. Like it's 1940.
Thats just not what it means though, quote refers to making the act of war seem hopeless to your enemy (psychological warfare) at least ur accurately titled😂
This seems like something a coward does and says and after they get punked there like the art of war made me win but it didn't you got p80 ked and chose to walk away and talk about some b.s. art of war
Thanks guys! March is usually when I come out of hibernation for training. I loved how you guys drilled home situational awareness, especially for us females it's really our best defense. You cannot get killed or kidnapped if you practice "old-fashioned" common-sense. Don't go down that dark ally at 2AM. Don't go out at night alone, and if you have to, make sure you're armed.
Ways He said. More guys with more accurate shots Don’t get stressed out and weak at the knees(Don’t get overwhelmed) Think clearly Manage your adrenaline Just because you’re shot doesn’t mean you’re out of the fight, the tide can shift. Winning doesn’t always meaning killing the other person, it can also mean coming home or avoiding it, that’s also winning. Good training, anyone can buy gear. Be able to move, cardio and being in shape helps. Thinkers before shooters, don’t murder someone just because you thought they were sketchy, know your state laws and abide by them, wait until the threat is actually a threat. Don’t let it be a fair fight Be honest with yourself, find your weaknesses and work on them.
"Being comfortable being uncomfortable" is the mental and physical key. I've been training Jiu-Jitsu for 8 years and it's helped my shooting drills. Any stress-based technical training aids in turning a big problem into a handful of manageable small ones.
@@blackt0wer well yes, you only get what you put in, right? However, how quickly you improve is in great part driven by your mindset about said training. And speaking of training...I'm looking forward to my pew pew pew time this weekend with .22LR BCG in the AR15 😎 #BudgetTactical 😅
25:00 "learn by failure"..Great advice. I was afraid of failure when I was younger and it cost me a lot of development and opportunity. Get after it now, it's never too late to develop a new skill.
This was really poignant to watch after a tough day where myself, a client, and my employees all ended up discussing the seeming hopelessness and pain of 2020. My mom grew up in WV coal country and my dad on a subsistence farm and then ended up in Vietnam with the 173rd... here I am, a middle-class professional stressed to the point of breaking and trying to access my warrior spirit: between spirit and "super ego"- where resiliency depends on not listening to functionally disruptive internal dialogues. This is a difference in the conditioning that comes with consistent non-life threatening stress vs. intermittent life threatening violence that is closer to our primal condition. My dad spent his adult life avoiding the fight: after two years in the jungle with a M60, the prospect of even a verbal argument was nothing he wanted anything to do with. I was glad to see this convo. on GT because there's a disconcertingly hopeful air for violent conflict in the larping world that's the antithesis of how anyone thinks that's been in the shit. Be vigilant, be wise.
Don't forget the "spiritual" aspect of being prepared, and staying strong in a ever increasing deteiorating world. Having a relationship with the Lord and communicating to Him has short term benefits and Long term.
I was doing solo room clearing with my airsoft gear in my empty house. Turns out granny was in the back room when I made entry so I smoked her right in the good eye. Sorry grams but I won that gun fight.
I love this channel and the guys. Fun, but focused. The part about the situational awareness is vital. I am a combat vet from flying the Apache and after the Gulf War 1 I was leaving a theatre in Seattle with a date and saw a homeless and antagonistic dude at the exit closest to my car so I exited us at the other exit at which point she stated "are you scared of that guy?" we didn't date after that...
I would say if she was mid 30s and older, that's a pass for another date. You aren't going to make any headway there. 30 and under, and now that I am a civilian and working with that age-crop much more often outside of the family in boots, who are a poor cross section to compare against when sizing up society-at-large and it's shortcomings, I would say that there's a better than 75% chance that was a teachable moment. I'm giving some credit to the Zoomers {I;m the father of an almost 26 year old} that I mostly do NOT extend to the Millenials {obviously there is an exception to every rule...or "a waiver"}, and this is just based on many years of REALLY trying to put in the effort to turn that lightbulb on above their head without using a Nintendo or XBox Controller to access the menu for said lightbub. I'm a 1975 model grumpy retired fucker, for context. Get off my lawn.
The book “Left of Bang” is perfect for recognizing and being able to articulate those “intangible movements” attackers make. You’ll notice people’s body language a lot better afterwards
Man have I enjoyed this video! I was in 3-75 many, many years ago and what I hear coming from Garret is exactly what we heard on a nearly daily basis (along with the Ranger Creed after PT) ... train for the worst conditions, be proficient with your kit, manage expectations, be consistent, be fit, keep your SA all the time and 'get there firstest with the mostest (No Fair Fight). My first Platoon Sergeant in 3rd Rangers was former Rhodesian Light Infantry, he was big on being consistent, he would say 'I would rather fight with a team that was second place EVERYTIME than some c*nts that come first every three or four times we run the drill.' He spent three years in the bush and he was big on 'shoot back first' and lay into the enemy (meaning not a fan of a double or triple tap, he would shrug then say 'start with knowing you are going shoot him at least five times ... and just work your way up to his face' he was a quiet, pragmatic killer). One time we had this king size E&E and we stole vehicles from Range control on Benning (because we just got trained on how to hot wire vehicles). Any hooo, when the exercise was over the MPs were at the gate and the Commander was bitching at all the Sergeants about 'how did this shit get out of hand?', Mike said "Hey sir think of it this way ... when the boys are fucking up, they are fucking up big ... means they are motivated. These are not timid souls, these men are Rangers." Sua Sponte Garret, glad you are still here.
Props to this dude. Honestly if they hadn’t said he had to relearn to talk I would never have guessed. This guy is a badass for more reason than one. Very much respect for such a storied life.

I like the talk about seeing it coming and peacocking. That's something I haven't really thought about. It'd make sense that people naturally do that to impose some level of intimidation or the likes before a fight. I'll have to keep that in mind. The more someone doesn't think you're going to do something, the more caught off guard they are when you do

Some of the stress inoculation that we did in Panama was working pits on Known Distance ranges where you have bullets whizzing by you head and you get used to it (although this did me no good when I had a non-freindly tracer come by) The second thing we did was forced rucks or runs to a range. The thought process was to get you used to operating with a high heart rate during a fight...your heart ❤ rate will be high in any life threatening situation.
My grandad at 59 has an agressive brain tumor, he's had surgery and is getting chemo. They're not sure if he'll last a year, or even months. My hopes and prayers go out to everyone who either has or knows someone with cancer.
Ik it's an old video but I've just finished a month of daily breathing practice meant to work as stress inoculation. Works like a charm. The protocol is based on some of the most recent research (which means it's not in weird articles or approved by the FDA) but if it works for people with debilitating PTSD and anxiety, but also, interestingly, depression and a related conditions. It's very similar to the wim hof thing, 5 minutes a day of focused, voluntary heavy breathing combined with as long of a breath hold as possible (on exhale). Dumps as much adrenaline into your system as your glands can produce. The 5 minute mark is mostly important in the context of health and dealing with mental illness (basically if you do it for longer brain enters the constant threat monitoring mode and raises the cortisol levels for a long time which is very draining, suppresses testosterone, makes it hard to focus etc., while the characteristic psychological profile of the high speed boys shows they can flip the danger-relax switch on demand and have their avg cortisol levels very low).
Great video! Garrett, thank you for taking time to share your story. Thank you for your service to our country. Glad you kicked cancers ass and made a full recovery.
I've had my CC felt a number of times, mostly because I have a tiny waist and it sticks out like a sore thumb! That's why I strictly open carry now, I find the added early visual detection of my firearm is a welcome additional benefit to my WEDC. I encourage all members of our channel to *be the one* to start the discussion of what open carry would look like in your family and community, and together come up with a plan that best suits your situation. Together, I KNOW we can create safer communities for ever our most disadvantaged brothers and sisters.
Open carry is a horrible idea criminal sees your gun on your hip and you give up the priceless element of surprise. Now that person who might also be armed will not believe he's dealing with a defenseless citizen as they usually think.

Same, sports a huge for stress inoculation and building mental toughness.

Had to be south memphis. 🤣
I always qualified Expert Marksman in the Army, and I'm still that accurate, but that's only one part of a complete combat skill set.

The stress inoculation and resiliency content here is amazing.
the guy's clearly a stone-cold trigger puller, he's not making any bones about it either =/
"What can guys do for stress inoculation"
In this comments section? Talk to girls.
What there are girls in this comment section?! I'm out
Married for 20 years. I’m inoculated.
Go have an operation at a VA hospital. That's stress inoculation.
feldwebel5 Hey. Retired VA med/surg nurse 17 years. You would have had the best experience. We were #1 VA in the nation repeatedly.
*sweating*
Nobody with real world experience thinks open carry is ever a good idea.
@@stephen8996 You mean like cops? Or the military? Or they do not have real world experience? What exactly do you mean?
Brilliant idea, if you want to get clapped first.
@@jessegatto7759 Open carry ironically is fine where you need to carry the least, like a well functioning rural town.
To quote Eli Wallach, aka Tuco, "If you're going to shoot, shoot, don't talk."
Good point, Angleeyes.
One of my favorite quotes, along with “no good deed goes unpunished “.
Best movie ever
The Hunt, Betty Gilpin,
"You fucked up, bitch!" 😂
@@havindy yep, The Gentlemen is another classic! lol
Laughing because you drive out to a range and train when I just do it in my moms basement without spending money.
Also, a finger-gun is cheaper than a real gun
“You can’t just gun somebody to the ground, cause that’s called murder” awesome
Self-defense is keep going UNTIL the threat is stopped.
Dream Theory nice reference
Defending yourself is not murder and even Jesus said to use your sword and defend yourself. So it is a sin to not defend yourself against evil.
Dream Theory put em in a body bag!
Knight-Sgt. Reyes Talk to Kyle about it
So my Uncle was a Ranger. Airborne. Served in Panama. Ended up being an instructor at the Ranger school...
Im watching this, and realizing all this stuff that my uncle really, really drilled into me as a kid. Realizing, "oh this kinda stuff is not taught to most people."
Fitness. Situational awareness. Conflict avoidance.
I thought its was just like "hey we live in a dangerous area, be careful" but now im realizing it was so much more than that. Dude was drilling me with straight up RANGER knowledge. Thanks Uncle T
