No matter what brand of paint, your textures and techniques shine through. Another lovely tutorial by Mr. Clark.
Thanks so much Nancy!
I love the history as well as the GREAT teaching. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it J!
I really regard your work, tutoring and advice so highly Paul. It’s so obvious your talent comes from the love of the craft. Thank you so much for what you give us! This Colman inspired painting is lovely!
Wow, thank you - very kind!
@@ArtbyPaulClark I mean it. 🥰 And I meant to spell it, “Cotman”. 😎
Thank you, Paul, a lovely tutorial, again, beautiful colours (green is my favourite colour). I cant wait to give this a go tomorrow. Thanks for all you do and everything you teach. I am learning so much from your tutorials and Margot's challenges. 👍🙏
Thanks so much 😊
I learn a lot from your videos, but what I like most is how humble you are. Not all professional artists are like that. Thank you for proving that good art is possible with less expensive supplies. Even Cotman paints are expensive in my country (Argentina) and I take good care of the few ones I have. Watching you paint with them was empowering. Thank you for this. ♥
You are very welcome ... thanks so much Andrea for your lovely comment!
Very mysterious, the shadow of no known object... perhaps his darkened mood, spilling out before him... ?
I agree - lol!
Good afternoon 🍳🥞🍩☕🥛💋❤️dear Paul! I welcome you to my favorite channel and I'm glad to see you again cheerful, healthy and in a good mood. Thank you for the new video 🤳 🖼️🎨and I'm looking forward to next Wednesday! All the best to you, good luck, health and have a good day! I put like 👍 and bye...bye...P.S.I hope that the outgoing summer will give us some more warm days and more of your lovely wonderful videos about nature, dear and beloved Paul!💋💋💋❤️❤️❤️🖼️🖼️🖼️🎨🎨🎨✍️✍️✍️✏️✏️✏️🖌️🖌️🖌️📝📝📝🖐️😊🖐️😊🖐️😊👍👍👍
First again Adela - always lovely to read your comments and emoji's! - many thanks!
Just magic as ever Paul. The aqueduct is not far from me in Wirral - it is a beautiful spot and great to walk over if you have a head for heights!
I can't wait to spend the week in May learning in person. Lots to practice ahead of then!
Now, where's that sketchbook?
Sounds great! - have fun!!!!
Another fantastic tutorial. Some nice historical detail as well. One question - would John Cotman have used salt, or was this technique a later development?
I don't think he would have ... I think it's was developed much later.
Thank you, Paul. Your channel is my favorite watercolor channel. I am learning much, and it is such a relaxing time. I'm always excited to see it appear in my notifications on Wednesday!
Thank you so much 😀
Amazing as always.
Well I have one or two cotmans - very good watercolors, but - because I'm from Poland, my favourite are from renesans.
Thanks for sharing! - yes, I love them too!
Thank you! Chirk Aqueduct is a place I actually visited years ago on my one trip to the UK. Brought back some memories :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Paul, I loved your video and I love Aqueducts! You paint so beautifully. I do use cotman paints due to budget but I try to use Arches paper. I'm going to check out your video on paints. Thank you.
Thank you so much Sandy!
Good morning Paul , your tuto posts at 4a my time and I’m up and ready to rock and roll ! This one is beautiful, thank you Paul , I’ve spent months studying and painting my tail off and I’ve been asked to hang some of my Paul Clark paintings in a gallery owned by world renowned WA Winery where I spent time glamping last week . I hope that is ok with you ?!?
You should feel like a proud papa ! Lol, one of your students half way around the world is producing fine quality paintings because of YOU! Yes , I admit I watch a few others occasionally and I subscribe to skillshare as well but this is all you , I’ve listened and paid attention to you and watched every brush stroke ! Thank you Paul , blessings to you and Margot!
My pleasure as always and yes please feel free to exhibit! - good luck with the show!
Really wonderful tutorial! Thank you! I sure look forward to Watercolor Wednesdays! Thank you so very much
You are so welcome!
Yep! Mr. Cotman will be more than pleased with your painting and reminding us all of him and his body of work! ❤ XXX
Many thanks!
Looks amazing, Turner!! I've never heard of that artist, I'll look up on I'm!!!
Lol! - yes a must!!!
@ArtbyPaulClark got a book of him, on his way!!!
I started with Cotman, and still have lots of them now, tubes and blocks. But as I've progressed I've invested in the likes of Daniel Smith and other artists quality. So thank you for reminding us that good paintings can be produced without it costing the earth, I really enjoyed watching this.
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed!
Watching you paint & listening to the music is like being in a sensory room, Mr C--- total bliss.
That's nice of you to say - thanks!
It is very therapeutic watching you paint. Thank you.
Thank you so much 😀
I am sorry - how do I see the list of water colours "listed below" on my screen. I don't know if I am not clicking something I should
I mean the ones I put in white type along the bottom of the video as I paint.
Thank you :) I really like the trees in the foreground.
Thank you too!
You know, I learn more from one of your videos than any others. You inspire me. Thankyou.
Wow, thank you - so nice!
Very nice. Thank you. The music was fantastic. As was your painting. The thing I like is your step by step method of teaching. I never know where to start and the process so it's very helpful.
I always buy artist quality just in case something turns out! And I'm now thinking of trying Cotman and trying some other brands of paper.
Thanks again Paul❤
Thank you very much!
Like your lessons! Am trying to paint my squirrel after your painting but am having” fur” problems not very lifelike! Really enjoy your style! Thanks.😊
You can do it!
@@ArtbyPaulClark Hope you have that much belief in all your scholars!
Thank you, Paul! Just what I needed today ❤
You're so welcome!
Wonderful lesson in the value of tonal contrast, as well as a foray into the history of watercolor. I too started out with Cotman paints years ago, and although I’ve moved on to mostly Daniel Smith, I still enjoy my early paintings and they have held up well as far as colorfastness goes. I know of well known professional artists who have used, and some who still use, Cotman paints. I guess it boils down to what the poet Robert Frost once wrote: “It’s knowing what to do with things that counts.”
I have heard complaints that the quality of current Cotman paints have suffered since the manufacturing has moved to China, but the same arguments are made about other art products as well, such as Arches paper recently, since manufacturing has been outsourced, and even the W&N professional line.
On another note, your little history lesson inspired me to research more about Cotman, which led me to a lovely article in The Quarterly Review which features the Greta Bridge which he, Turner, and others painted. The article was delightfully written, and I felt like I had had a wonderful ramble about the countryside myself through the descriptions of the architecture and art connected with the area, and all the great natural features as well. I am including the title of the article and author as well as the link because I don’t know if links are allowed. It is “Assignation with Greta” by Bill Hartley, the Greta being a river that runs in the general area of the Yorkshire Dales. The area is said to have “significant artistic and literary heritage.”

Thanks so much for sharing this with us - I'll definitely have a look!
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing the drawing. Makes the painting along with you much easier (newer watercolorist here). Your videos are a joy to watch….very inspiring 👏‼️🎨🖼👏‼️🎨🖼
My pleasure 😊
Wow! This painting is beautiful. I enjoyed watching you paint it. It’s like magic. I also started with Cotman paints in my 20’s and just found those tubes recently. (25 years later 😮). I’ve been experimenting with different brands (Maimeriblu, M Graham) but the biggest difference is the upgrade in paper I did. Arches is like a whole new world compared to Canson XL. I will have to try painting this one. ❤🖼️🖌️🎨🙏🏻 Have a blessed day and thank you for your lesson.
Thank you so much 😀 - and yes I agree, the paper is the most important!
🖐😊🌷⚘🌹👍🤗
@@adelabadova3105 🥰🙏🏻😘
Thanks for the history lesson I've been using cotman paints for years and it is a very decent student grade - one that I could afford. Maybe one day I'll try their professional line ,,thanks for a great tutorial!!
My pleasure!
I think it's the paper. I admit, I have a block of Hahnemühle 600g and I don't dare to paint on it by now... Maybe when I get a little bit more advanced.
I painted this along with you in my normal sketchbook and it looks beautiful with Schmincke paints! 😅
Great to hear and love those Schmincke paints too!
Thank you Paul. You're a master at scenery! ❤
You are very welcome
Lovely, as always, with great music in the background. Thank you so much for these wonderful tutorials!
Ginny in Houston, Texas
You are so welcome Ginny from Texas!
I must admit, I have never heard of this particular artist or the type of paints. Really enjoyed your choice of subject and loved the good strong colours in this 👍 I'm giving up my attempts at splattering though, as I just splattered my walls also!😊 Enjoyable and very watchable as usual!
Many thanks - have fun!
Welcome splats this week!Thanks Paul.🎉
Any time!
Another gorgeous painting, Paul. And very interesting to learn about Cotman the artist. I live in Norwich and we have a ‘Cotman Road’ here. Named after JS Cotman I would think. 😊
Yup, I reckon so - thanks
Love it when we can see your palette and the consistency of the paint in it!!!! I have cotmen and some Van Gogh. Just bought Holbein while travelling to Japan. Looking forward to try the difference!
Love your tutorials!
Hope you enjoy it!
I'm a very amateur painter. My 1st paints were a small set of Holbein decades ago, and I have never found anything that I liked better. Even my 1st paintings I did in 1993 look fabulous. I hope you enjoy them.
Hermosa acuarela eres excelente maestro pictorico......🇲🇽🇲🇽......
Many thanks!
Thank you so much for another wonderful tutorial. I always learn something from watching you paint. 🎉
Great to hear thanks Emily!
Beautiful painting! Thank you showing how to do the cast shadows, it seems to be where I need to improve.
Glad it was helpful!
Another amazing landscape painting. A perfect lesson on how to add colour to a black and white painting.
I used Camel watercolors that were the only paints available (are actually very good quality for the price) before online shopping. Now my daughter supplements my paints with tubes from different brands. Have some Cotman paints too.
Can we have a grey bridge instead of a yellow ochre one?
Thanks for sharing and yup that colour will do fine!
Sei troppo bravo 👏👏👏👏👏!
Many thanks!
Muchas gracias Paul! Qué fantástico video, eres muy generoso transmitiendo tus conocimientos.
Muchas gracias too!
Thank you so much for this inspired tutorial! I recognized the name but knew nothing about him so I appreciate the lesson-in-lesson :) Again, thank you for all you and Margo do - especially for the amateur artist arena!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you again Paul. Love this tutorial. Thank you so much for using cotman paint. I'm a beginner and on a tight budget so it's cotman paints for me and gradually building up my collection. Just wondering if you give a list of the colours you use the most on any of your tutorials. Thank you again. You are amazing. I love watching you paint.
Hi Sue - check this video out as I list some of my favourite colours: ua-cam.com/video/Fct8n1mWAGY/v-deo.html
Hello Paul. I love when you do these inspired artist series. Love learning a bit of history and enjoy watching you paint. Thank you for all the free downloads. I really couldn't do any of your art without them. Take care, see you soon 🤗
You are very welcome!
Thank you for your time and talent! I love the Inspiration Series and learning about other artists! The contrasts in your painting are magic - especially the foreground bushes! :0)
You are so welcome!
Thank you for introducing us to this fabulous painter!. I use Cotman paints often. Your rendition is lovely!
You are so welcome!
Your inspirational teaching techniques are brilliant. I learned so much from each and every one of your tutorials and you put a smile on my face. Thank you so much you’re still on my bucket list to come and paint with you in the UK cheers.
Great to hear! - thanks!
Great demo as always Paul. I use Cotman colours with other brands and they are good. Altho they don't have a Naples yellow in the range
So true! - I'll have a word!
Bravo! I'll try it as soon as possible !
Olivier, from France.( Brittany)
Have fun Oliver!
Magnifique. Thank You
My pleasure!
Love the different textures in this painting!! Thank you, as always, for a great way to start my day! Wednesday mornings are my favorite 😊
Thank you so much 😀
Love it so pretty. Your greens always look so natural. I love Cotman paints I hesitate to risk wasting more expensive paint as I'm still a bit of a beginner
I totally agree! thanks!
My daughter bought me the pan set that you said you started with they a very good for a novice like me and I can afford them x love your style of teaching
That is awesome!
Have you ever been to Canada to paint?
I grew up in Canada but not been there to paint.
Thanks Paul, as wonderful, and informative, as ever. You're a star.
Thank you kindly
Thank you for a art lesson with a bonus history lesson. Lovely painting and I enjoy using my Cotman's paints.
Glad you enjoyed it
Enriched by some history mostly appreciated thanks
My pleasure - thanks!
Thank you, Paul, for this wonderful tutorial on Cotman. This set was among the first watercolours I used when I was first starting to paint. I also love it.
You're very welcome!
Another absolutely lovely painting, Paul! In the two years since I've taken up painting I've watched watercolor tutorials by many different artists, and there are so many that are excellent. However, your paintings are so beautiful, your teaching style so friendly, inspiring and informative that I put you at the very top of my list of favorites! Thank you so very much!
Great to hear - many thanks!
Wednesdays are such a pleasure. There is always something to learn and try from your tutorials. Thank you. Andy
My pleasure Andy!
beautiful painting, I love the way you create your blends 😊
Thank you so much 😀
Always interesting to know the history of the people behind brand names….love these scenes
Thanks so much!
I love Wednesdays! 😊 Thank you, Paul!
My pleasure!
Wonderful tutorial as always. I have a request can u please review camlin watercolour tube paints which are my favorite and also favorite of many Indian artists. Thankyou Paul.
Hiya - I'm not sure you can get them in the UK - but I'll check it out!
Thank you.
So glad I came across this by accident. love the tutorials, I have always used Cotman and love them, even after thirty years.
Great to hear Debbie!
Its beautiful Paul lo e the blend of greens
Many thanks!
Again Paul...Superb. From Chile.
Thanks Carlos from Chile!
Well done Paul. Love those varied greens. Sherry
Cheers Sherry!
What! These are made in China, well I don't want them now. Just kidding...thanks for sharing this video with me. What isn't made in China anymore? I heard you mention some brands that are made in the US, I will probably look into them and compare the prices. Thank you for doing a review on them. Everything I've heard about them are positive. Cheers!
Paul your videos are a joy to watch - informative and fun!
Glad you think so!
Loved the painting, and the great history lesson too!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you Paul. Another peaceful, instructive and expertly executed painting!
Glad you enjoyed it
Cotman paints are great. Remember, artists like Cotman and Turner did not have such nice paints to use, they had to make their own.
Watching the painting develop is like magic. Such a serene piece, it’s beautiful. I have a W&N Cotman 12 full pan set which I purchased 25-28 years ago. I used it and then put it in a draw and forget about it. I found it last year. It’s made in the UK. Last year I swatched out all the colors and they are still lovely and vibrant.
Wonderful! - thanks for sharing!
Great tutorial as always. Such a beautiful inspired painting with lovely greens and with a historical look. I admit the stone buildings have that ancient look giving you a glimpse of the past. Thanks also for the history of the artist.
Thanks so much 😊
Love this painting style. Lovely happy little landscape.❤
Thank you so much 😀
Sir I am trying watercolour almost 1 or 1.5 year but I have not improvement why sir plz help
And my age is 14 year
It's difficult to say without watching you paint but if you are only 14 I would say you need to keep going - you still have a lot to learn and sometimes it can take years until you progress - good luck and have fun!
How can I show u my paintings
Youuuuu are so inspiring - I thank you!
You are so welcome!
Another excellent tutorial with a plus of a history lesson. I knew nothing about him. I wonder how he would have felt knowing that, in the future, a world renowned art suppliers would have a range named after him. It's sad that so many artists were never recognised in their time. I found it interesting too, right at the beginning, watching your sample paints and how they reacted. It reminded me of another artist's tutorial on YT where she said that transparents are like party people who like to intermingle and get along well with others but more opaques would push others out of the way and like to dominate, or something like that. 😀
That's a great analogy!
@@ArtbyPaulClark It was Jean Haines, for the benefit of anyone who would like to know.

Sir will you pleas review camle artist watercolor plz . Iam your big fan
And I am learning watercolor from you 😊😊❤❤
Many thanks but I can't get this brand in the UK - sorry
Ok sir thanks for the reply😊😊
Stunning. Best teacher on UA-cam.
Wow, thank you!
Hi Paul, just started watching, great knowing what inspires you & you are a wonderful teacher🇦🇺my father wrote a book about the 2nd eldest Bridge in Aust, "The Ross Bridge", built & carved by a convict. I'm doing a series of sketches on an old Uncle tobys factory near where I live. To me it's about having a connection to what inspires you. Thanks for sharing, amazing work, 3rd gen Aussie from Uk.
Wonderful! - thanks for sharing!
Such an informative video, Paul. You certainly paid proper homage to Mr Cotman’s black and white original. Your “values” management really is exceptional, adding such depth to the painting. Thank you for sharing your talents. This was very well done.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very beautiful and timely, having just swatched a few Cotman colors next to Artist's grade... wondering if I should buy Yellow Ochre since I have Cotman's already. I only use professional grade and as a beginner I don't think I should back pedal...
Thank you for a lovely rendition of Cotman's work and history! Blessings always to you from a California Gramma ❤😊🎉
Hi Ann - no don't back pedal and stick to the artist grade ... but wait til you have run out of the Cotman Yellow Ochre, it's one of their best colours.
Thanks again for another enjoyable Watercolor Wednesday; I look forward to watching and learning.😊
My pleasure as always Vicki 😊
Mr. Paul Clark, I’ve watched many of your UA-cam videos, which are helpful and you are a Great Watercolor Artist. When you use the Pastel Pencils, are they Oil Pastels? I’ve looked at several brands, but don’t want to buy Oil based if that’s what you don’t use. Thanks for your answer in advance!
I use pit pastel pencils by Faber Castle ... and they are not oil based.
What a great video! I use the Cotman, since I am at the beginner stage, and I have seen few professionals doing great things with them (such as yourself 🙂). I did notice the difference in pigments with the couple Daniel Smith color I have (just the primary), but like you said, a good quality paint is not going to make us masters, is the work behind it. Thank you so much, I love your videos, I hope one day you will be giving a class in Michigan 😀(there is a lovely resort in Lowell, Mi called the Franciscan Life Process center, where they host many events and art classes, and many renown artists have had 2-3 days seminars, hint hint).
Great comment - many thanks!
I love this one Paul!! Especially the contrast of greens where the lights comes thru😊 Thx so much!! Now i have another Pentrest board to make of Mr. Cotman….
Wonderful! - have fun!
I like this painting. Thankyou very much', Rita Battaglini FROM Australia'
You are welcome Rita 😁
Just got my coffee and sat down to watch! ❤️☕️
Hope you enjoy Jacquline!
@@ArtbyPaulClark I did! 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks Paul for another inspiring video. I always learn so much from your teaching! Thank you for sharing your expertise with us!
I appreciate that!
HI Paul! I have worked extensively and for several years with many different brands and qualities of watercolours and IMHO Cotman watercolours' quality dropped by the time that W&N moved the production in China. Cotmans used to be somewhat more pigmented and of a higher quality in the past. I'm not saying that they are the worst that you can get, but they are not anymore what they used to be. Same applies of course to the W&N professional line that lost the consistent high quality that they used to have. You can get the same colour from two batches and have two different qualities of the same colour. The good one and the not that good one.
Thanks for sharing this info - good to know!
I wanted to join the Paul Clark student group in Facebook but was declined. I even message you for that. May I know why I was not let in the group.
Hiya - Sorry, I really don't understand why? - Please try again I'm sure it's just a glitch - make sure you answer all the questions?
This is lovely. All the texture and shadow. You are my favorite artist to watch and have be watching for about 2 years from Oklahoma. I have done many of your tutorials and all with Cotman as I am a beginner . I love the inspirational ones as im a history buff too! Thank you so much Paul. P.s. the shadow on the bottom of the arches could possibly be a high water water mark....since the other one wasn't built for 40 years, just a thought.
Wow, thank you! - and yes it could be!
My brother told me about you and I'm a complete beginner... I've not even started yet, but I will definitely download a drawing and give it a go... I'm a visual learner, so maybe try and follow a tutorial. What do you think?
Thank you so much 😀 yes, go for it!
Good morning Paul thank you so much for your inspiration in art, I remember being taught on a Monday evening at Bexhill college basic beginners course which I really enjoyed , you instilled a feeling that we could all do it ,have continued since and many thanks to you. Tim.
Wonderful! and good to hear from you again Tim!
The book you have on the artist's work is wonderful. Thank you for sharing pages. I am going to try to read more about these aqueducts. Very interesting. Your painting is beautiful.
You are so welcome!
Amazing, as always, I am a big fan of your art.
an small question, have you tried the holbein watercolors?
Best regards from Chile
Thank you! Cheers! I've not used them yet but I have recently bought a 6 tube set I'm going to review in an upcoming video!
