The workout formulas (pre, post or overnight recover) that are actually good will be 2-4x more expensive than if you were to buy the ingredients they use in bulk and mix them together. I really appreciate your videos. I was recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic. As a native, diabetes runs in my family to the point of long term dialysis as the end result almost 100% of the time. I am determined to turn this around before it turns into full blown diabetes and have made some major diet changes but there is a lot more to it and I've learned so much from your easy to understand explanations. My life is too full to spend it in a dialysis chair!
There are a few statements, that I can't agree with. Saying that you absorb whey protein hydrolysate is not entirely true, because the di- and tri-peptides that it's composed of are not that easily absorbed by you intestines due to the fact, that the protein transporters in the cells are meant to transport more complicated proteins than peptides (due to the fact, that those peptides are not that common, when compared to proteins). That's btw. why EAA and BCAA don't build muscle and are used as a energy source (they go through a process called deamination and are broken down to pyruate acid which goes into a process called Krebs-cycle and are used as an alternate energy source). So, what is the best protein supplement (btw. they are not supplements... they are food, so use them like that... I use them for cooking, not only as a shake)? In my opinion, it would be a mixture of whey protein isolate and casein protein (those being a higher concentration ones like 80%+)
The orgain shakes are fantastic but specifically the plant based ones. Usually the fully plant based products taste worse but honestly the plant based orgain shakes taste way better than the milk ones and are much better for you. Also I am reading the ingredients on mine and it seems they no longer use rice bran but everything else is the same so looks like its been improved too. Theyre super tasty

LOL I have issues with absorbing protein and need a lot of extra every day. Which means protein shakes and they can’t be plant based - have to be either whey or egg. That’s actually my go-to because the protein isn’t bad, I’m okay with sucralose and it tastes delicious which means I will actually drink it.
9:50 yay! I'm happy my Orgain Keto College chocolate mix made the cut! I only recently started watching TD about 3 months ago and lost 35 pounds by making small changes and increasing my activity level. I'm not full Keto yet, but I'm willing to learn and TD is the best teacher out there!
I dont go to Costco but its always great to hear about the proteins and ingredients. I can't get people to understand that Ace K and Sucralose are not good for them. They see so many other keto youtubers using products with those in them and say, well it's okay for me too. The Orgain Chocolate taste just like a Wendy's Choc Frosty too!
I stopped using a TON of stuff that had Ace K. I can't find a lot of research about it though, other than the video Thomas made about Crystal Light and Mio style water additives. I still haven't used any products with Ace K after watching that video.
As someone who loves protein smoothies this video was HUGE in learning the various ingredients in protein powders!! I used to love slinging back Premier Protein RTDs - thanks to this video I will take a pass on them from now on. I will look for the Dymatize and ON Isolate at my Costco!
This breakdown was awesome, I finally understand the ingredients going into my shakes. Always thought the protein I was using was low quality, now I know why. Thanks !
Whey protein concentrate and casein have only been found to be inflammatory in some individuals. It's unfair to claim that you should avoid it altogether, although yes, I would prefer a whey isolate or hydrolyzed isolate be the first listed ingredient to make up a larger portion of the powder. Looking at nutrient timing (Brad Shoenfeld, Bill Campbell, every credible researcher) blends have been found to be superior compared to taking whey isolate alone. Your body needs 20-40 grams of protein every few hours and blends are recommended because each protein type digests at a different rate, giving you multiple levels of absorption, casein itself digesting within 6-8 hours (making it the perfect before bed protein powder to fulfill muscle protein synthesis while we are asleep seeing as we cannot eat asleep!)
Thanks for the clarity man, the first powder that he bagged out (musclepharm) I use and believe me, it's a great versatile product, not everything said here is gospel
Angelo Fenix you should keep up to date with your studies mate. Something called a leucine threshold. And although overall protein intake is what you should focus on, consuming 20-40 grams of protein is shown to capitalize upon giving you what your body needs every few hours. Also something called MTOR. Look into it. Go watch someone credible like @Biolayne or Jeff Nippard. Even Dr Greg
No, they are not. A good quality whey concentrate (80 percent or more) is the way to go. Whey concentrate has some obvious health benefits like adding digestion and casein protein is good slow-release source of protein.
I agree. I think a quick summary of what he liked would have been good. He knows he is stuff but Talks SOOO much to drag out the video. Drives me crazy. Get to the point and tells us what is good or not.
Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein Isolate, the first bag he placed in cart, is the best protein Costco carries. Whey Protein concentrate is not the purest form of Whey and can be avoided.

The Orgain simple organic peanut butter is my absolute favorite. Coconut sugar is a much better choice than regular sugar and “too much carbs” just really depends on your goals. Carbs are ultimately needed for protein absorption so if you are drinking it for a post workout protein than a lot of those proteins that have close to zero carbs won’t cut it.
Thank you for breaking down the the Orgain protein superfood powder. I like it a lot because it helps me use the restroom. But I always wondered what you thought about the ingredients profile & I value your opinion. Great video!

He has to tell you what ingredients to be careful with and what to stay away from. The less ingredients the better... I would definitely not buy anything he reviewed except for the Collagen.
Again, the best, purest and reasonably priced protein that Costco carries is the first one he put into his cart, Optimum Nutrition Performance Whey protein isolate. I use it myself, it works well, and there's no reason to change to anything inferior. The collagen stuff may help your nails, hair and skin, but I have no experience with it.
Thanks Thomas! I've been using the orgain w/superfoods for a while now, thinking it was such a good product. I didn't realize how bad millet was! Switching to Orgain Simple from now on. A Costco run (or amazon, vitamin shoppe, etc..) on the "6 supplements that every athlete should consider" video would be cool
There isn't even a Costco in my country or any of these protein powders, but the information in this video is astounding and the guy delivers it with such finesse, subscribed for more.
I cannot thank you enough for your videos!! I am learning such about the ingredients, chemicals and such and how they impact my body. I truly believe that the cleaner and fewer ingredients the better, but there were so many things that on their own seem ok that can affect me specifically because of my thyroid for example. Your videos ate easy to follow, simply explained, and super informative. THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
Gotta love the crazies 😂😂😂 no tp because of apocalypse but tons of protein supplements at Costco right now idiot's you don't need tp if you're getting no nutrients 😂😂
I'm glad you explained vega because a lot of people have complained in reviews about it upsetting their stomachs. But that's the reason - You have to cut out stuff that is not good for you so these products can do their job.
Hi Thomas. I’ve been adding the Orgain Protein and Superfoods to my morning smoothie for a couple years now. I notice you were not a fan of the millet used in their superfood complex, and I’m curious to know more about the anti nutrient effect you mentioned. I understand that it can decrease iodine in the body, but if the amount is negligible in the protein powder does it really have a noticeable effect? I’m wondering if I should stop using that particular protein now.
He also wasn’t a fan of the rice bran in them and put them both back on the shelf. I think he said the rice bran blocked the mineral absorption from the list of super foods in their ingredients. I’ve been using Orgain for many years and am now thinking about looking for an alternative having a history of thyroid issues in my family.
Can you do more cooking at home videos? Please? Reason: now that we are at Costco and we’ve purchased everything, we need to figure out how to make all this.
Long term fan of yours Thomas. I tried all the supplements you gave thumbs up too. Your keto book with kale, berries, etc. I fell off the wagon for about a year in a half. Had Keto fatigue for two weeks, during shakes consistently for a few months. I'm 57 years old, weigh almost 200 lbs. now. Right now doing fasting for a few days, feel clear-headed. My goal is to get to 170 lbs.
Ive tried everything that Costco has. Prefer those huge 6 lb. protein "Cookies and Creams" bags (Green and Black tin foil). But everything there is just so good. Every protein, supplement, vitamin I've purchased at Costco -- has worked for me big-time. If I run out protein now - I freak. I'm like my God I've run out. (breakfast of protein shake, oatmeal/fruit - almonds - supplements).
Thomas, You ok'd 2 of my "go to" products.....yeaaaaa! So happy! Thank you for your info to help guide me in making good choices for my health and well being!!! You're the best!!😊👍
Incorrect. Sucralose has been shown to 1. Not increase blood sugar levels, 2. Not be inflammatory, 3. Is not "toxic" like you claim. It is one of the safer and more common artificial sweetener used in 90% of the proteins in the market for a reason.
Pussywhistle but yes in studies in mice they had to use large quantities in proportion to mice size (vs human size) the toxicity was shown only in long term chronic use. Ex: multiple uses a day, multiple days a week...
The problem with sucralose is that it changes your gut microbiome . It lowers your good freindly bacteria. Any health enthusiast already knows its not good for you . do some research N10FIT
213chrysler someone hasnt seen every meme regarding gut biome health in regards to artifical sweeteners. If you want the link to dozens of research hit me up. And yes, i do my research, as a certified researcher and certified-BS-Callout-er
Only thing I would say though is that the ingredients that were considered worse or superficial were at the end of the listing. History has taught us that the farther you go down the listing the less per mg of that ingredient exists in the combo. I wouldn't call the troops out to protect me from the last 5-6 ingredients so to speak. The portion about having an ingredient that makes you more addicted to diary, i can't agree totally. I think its purely subjective based on the person. Ive used every protein powder in Sams and Costco for roughly 10 years, and I do not consume any dairy outside of the protein powder. I do not even eat bread, pizza, or anything that is primarily composed of dairy (unless its hidden). Great review overall, I'm subscribing. I just know from years of research and personal trial that many scientific findings are not written in stone no matter what the science says. Edit: I wrote this based on the first package you spoke on. I wasn't aware that you mentioned the ingredients listing and where they are included higher or lower on the list.
I just watched this a few weeks ago and I always rewatch it over and over again to burn into my mind the ingredients so I become natural to seeing it on the labels...the dislikes are probably the companies because they are upset your blowing up their lies..lol... keep education going..
@thomas delauer , thank you and shout out for making this video....please make videos on complete body building or shredding guide videos....along with nutrition...what to eat...
Dr. Paul Saladino said we should avoid pea protein, which use followed your recommendation. According to him, because of the high arsenic level in pea and rice protein we should avoid them. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Many thanks!
1st THANK YOU for ALL your videos! I learn so much by watching your videos. 2nd, I do have a question/video topic: Does research say that caffeine has an impact of protein absorption? A friend gave me one research article saying caffeine limits protein absorption. I have not found another article supporting this. I routinely drink protein drink mixed in with my coffee basically every morning. Am I just wasting my expensive protein drink?
Any whey isolate from any reputable manufacturer will do. They all buy the the same raw materials from a few select manufacturers. Only difference is what other ingredients they add in particular the flavoring.
I use the vital protein collagen every day. Since it has no flavor I mix it into my morning green tea. It mixes easily and doesn’t take the green tea flavor away. You wouldn’t even noticed it’s there. That brand hands down on getting rid of my tennis elbow!
Great video but many of us don't agree to ever spike insulin. To draw more nutrients we need to increase insulin sensitivity and every time we increase insulin spikes, we decrease sensitivity.
Thanks Tom, I just bought my boys the second brand in your review because they're both taking it. They are 16 and 19 and are actively working out. My youngest is training for football and at 5'10" he's bigger than his older brother. My wife and I just happened to be at Costco last weekend getting some almond flour and some other things. It wasn't supposed to be a lot but we always seem to spend no less than $200 every time we go there. What brand would you recommend? Not necessarily at Costco but anywhere it's available. Thank You in advance. Frank M.
Thanks thomas!!. I think people need to know and watch this video when purchasing whey. Highlights 1. Opt for whey isolate . 2. Make sure the whey is rgbh hormone free and 100%grass fed. Ideally and for people with digestion issues: 3. It is better if the whey is sourced from traditional A2-Protien producing cattles. whey sourced from traditional cows (Gir cows, tharparkar etc.) For US brands whey sourced from (Guernsey, Jersey cows). It might be difficult to find all these in one brand but, if you can then you have your answer for a good whey protein. Still stick to the VERY first two points when purchasing whey and always check the bioavailability of protien.

Been looking for something like this a LONG time. Killed it! Subscribed!
Avoid buying boatloads of toilet paper to save $$ lmao
Gotta love the crazies 😂😂😂 no tp because of apocalypse but tons of protein supplements at Costco right now idiot's you don't need tp if you're getting no nutrients 😂😂
BitchWongFoo yeah it doesn’t make sense ahah
Which did you think was better between the Orgain Keto Collagen vs the Vital Proteins Collagen protein?
I LOVE that Keto Orgain collagen stuff. I put it my coffee. Tastes like a mocha and gives me good energy for a long time.
Nice! Thanks for watching!
I might try that, sounds good.
I mix it with sugar free almond milk and MCT oil, I make like a hot chocolate drink, tastes really good before bed.
Just saw the VP segment! Ty!
Woohoo! I've been waiting on this one and you covered all the ones I was curious about. Thx!
Thanks for watching!
Orgain has since replaced the rice bran in the plant based chocolate shake with sunflower lecithin, fwiw....
Can you do more cooking at home videos? Please?
Reason: now that we are at Costco and we’ve purchased everything, we need to figure out how to make all this.
Thomas is a married man
Long term fan of yours Thomas.
Why don’t you save a lot of time and just say which is the best.
Ive tried everything that Costco has. Prefer those huge 6 lb. protein "Cookies and Creams"
bags (Green and Black tin foil). But everything there is just so good. Every protein, supplement,
vitamin I've purchased at Costco -- has worked for me big-time. If I run out protein now - I freak.
I'm like my God I've run out. (breakfast of protein shake, oatmeal/fruit - almonds - supplements).
My wife gets the Orgain lol. What about MuscleMilk? Also can you please review supplements maybe multivitamins, fish oil, green tea, etc.
Thank you Thomas for breaking down the information on protein powders. This video was very helpful.
Thomas, You ok'd 2 of my "go to" products.....yeaaaaa! So happy! Thank you for your info to help guide me in making good choices for my health and well being!!! You're the best!!😊👍
Man you are a brilliant fitness expert. Not just a fitness expert !
Incorrect. Sucralose has been shown to 1. Not increase blood sugar levels, 2. Not be inflammatory, 3. Is not "toxic" like you claim. It is one of the safer and more common artificial sweetener used in 90% of the proteins in the market for a reason.
I did my senior thesis on this. 100% agree. As smart as this guy is, he needs an update on some of the more recent and popularly-accepted research.
@@ninjannn10 What about acesulfame potassium? I'm reading that it's only toxic in super large quantities.
Can you make videos like this with other foods to buy/avoid?
I see a lot of tapioca powers/starches, in "Keto" products. Is that a starch? What do you think of it? Thank You!!! Love your channel!!
"Natural.. oh no... here we go "😂🤣
Lol
@@ThomasDeLauerOfficial what do you think about canadianprotein.com and their product ?
I really like your videos. Could you do one that focuses on all supplements for diabetics?
I just watched this a few weeks ago and I always rewatch it over and over again to burn into my mind the ingredients so I become natural to seeing it on the labels...the dislikes are probably the companies because they are upset your blowing up their lies..lol... keep education going..
Love your Costco shows. Ty
I wouldn't think they'd say "grass finished" on a milk product, because the cow isn't dead yet.
Hmm makes sense. Maybe say 100% grass fed?
How about pasture raised milk cows?🤔
Am I just wasting my expensive protein drink?
fun fact: most of you have no idea whats he's talking about but watch anyway
That’s why I’m watching. So I can learn a few things
@@NikeSBDunkman23 me and you both
Yea you're in the same boat as us. Glad to see you're willing to learn more too! Cheers!
He has no idea himself it seems... Ace K isn't that bad of a artificial sweetener.
@G M he's the person everyone can't wait to see during family functions lol
All man! This is the most in-depth protein explanation I've ever came across. I'm glad I came to this channel. I am definitely a subscriber!
Dude, just tell me which the best overall whey protein to buy !
Any whey isolate from any reputable manufacturer will do. They all buy the the same raw materials from a few select manufacturers. Only difference is what other ingredients they add in particular the flavoring.
Get the Optimum Nutrition Isolate.
Plant based protein is the best
At Costco, definitely Optimum Nutrition Performance Whey Isolate.
Thank you for the insightful analysis of how certain ingredients work, don't work in isolation or in combination.
Sorry you've just ended up confusing me. Please recommend one
@J G doesn't taste nice
Awesome breakdown review, all the very best.
Who else just buys any protein powder?😂
RIP us
Auto Zone now sells protein powder😬
thank you so much for taking the time to make this video to educate us! So appreciated!
;-( no costco here in europe ... don’t have the good stuff you find in costco ;-(
:(
They have it in the U.K
Can you order online? Go to the Costco website....😊👍 Or would that make it too $$$ for you?? Best to you!😊
IDK....you would need to check on the website. Best to you!!
thanks 😊
I use the vital protein collagen every day. Since it has no flavor I mix it into my morning green tea. It mixes easily and doesn’t take the green tea flavor away. You wouldn’t even noticed it’s there. That brand hands down on getting rid of my tennis elbow!
When did he become popular? Last time I watched this channel I remember it having under 100k subscribers.
This was a majorrrr help! Thank you so much for educating me!
So glad he remembered to go back to the agave. It was killing me lol. Stay way from high fructose foods!
Great video but many of us don't agree to ever spike insulin. To draw more nutrients we need to increase insulin sensitivity and every time we increase insulin spikes, we decrease sensitivity.
Thanks Tom,
I just bought my boys the second brand in your review because they're both taking it.
Highlights
1. Opt for whey isolate .
2. Make sure the whey is rgbh hormone free and 100%grass fed.
Ideally and for people with digestion issues:
3. It is better if the whey is sourced from traditional A2-Protien producing cattles.
whey sourced from traditional cows (Gir cows, tharparkar etc.)
For US brands whey sourced from (Guernsey, Jersey cows).
It might be difficult to find all these in one brand but, if you can then you have your answer for a good whey protein.
Still stick to the VERY first two points when purchasing whey and always check the bioavailability of protien.
1 min into the very first product and he's rattling off "scientific facts" with no citations. It's not that I don't believe this but, when you start talking in hyperbolic absolutes it makes me a little skeptical.
This is great! Keep doing more. Do you have your own supplement company? You're one of the only other one's I would trust outside of UMZU.
I could watch this guy all day
Always learning something from your videos!
