The L and R in japanese can be used inter-changeably, honestly when japanese people pronounce ra, ri, ru, re, ro you can hear they make a sound that resembles both R and L, this will also be evident with Alabasta/Arabasta.

This series of you guys coming together to discuss One Piece as a family has very quickly become my favorite thing to listen to/watch. One of the things I love about One Piece is, that the world moves independently from our characters. It's best to remember everything, because you never know who or what can have a massive impact hundreds of chapters in the future.
And it's always worth going back and thinking about every line, seriously, I'd never thought about those lines 42:55 like that at all... then again I didn't remember them being written at this point.

Luffy values his life, just less than other things, like pursuing his dream. He knows pursuing kop can't be done if you're scared to die. Also, him jumping into fights without a plan is part of his plan. Him being rubber, and thus super durable, allows him to take hits while observing his opponents. And he's been rubber since he was a child. So he never learned to not stick his finger in the electric socket, you know? He just sticks it in and sees what happens. Luffy doesn't have to be worried as much. His bones don't break. He doesn't need to study before he fights, he can study while he fights.

As for the foreshadowing, YES many things are teased, even chapter one has some insane foreshadowing that will be understood later on in the story, Oda has always had a plan of where the story might go so he is able to mention characters and things that we learn more about hundreds of chapters later.

Found this excerpt from a cursory googling:
“号 or the -go suffix is normally used to name naval (aka war) ships in Japan. If you want get the equivalent in English, is the same as S.S. Name of the Ship used by the US. One Piece is just following the same naming convencion”
So calling it the Going Merry-go is a bit of a pun on the naming convention. At least that’s how always read it

    • @siegpasta
      @siegpasta 6 місяців тому

It's just the counter for ships. In the japanese language, if you are counting something you need to put a "counter" suffix on the end of that noun, that is always specific to a group of things.

I wanna Say I am very happy you are enjoying One Piece. As an also Older Individual. (40) I started reading it in its weekly Shonen Jump releases while I was in High School. This was JUST as anime and manga were actually getting popular in the US. But was still far from Main Stream. And One Piece was considered the weakest of the Big 3. (Bleach Naruto and One Piece) But its Gone on to be the longest lasting and best selling with perhaps the biggest fan base.
Also I loved your take on Oda evolving as a writer. Yes you will see it a lot. There is most certainly gradual shifts in certain directions. And even a few course corrections. Its all a wild ride.
And Yes. I also love smoker because before our view was of the Navy being bad guys mostly with a few ok ones. Smoker being a Higher ranked officer and also so strong but so kind and taking actual justice seriously was a great way of showing the Navy is neither the good or bad guys. Pirates are not good or bad guys either. its down to the person.

Another thing I love about the whole scene with "Nami's room" is how it shows Nami's resilience and inner strength.
Arlong enslaving her and forcing her to sail the seas and make maps is basically like tainting her dream. But Nami doesn't abandon it despite her trauma, neither does she despise her natural gift for navigation. Now free and with true nakama, she dreams even bigger.
And I think this is a beautiful message that actually speaks more to older audiences.
Many people who actually manage to make their hobby their job and thus making their dream reality, often lose their passion or initial drive for it because their dream becomes tainted by the harsh reality that is adulthood and everything a "job" entails.
This is actually pretty common in the manga industry in Japan where deadlines are tight and the competitiveness is extraordinary. Knowing about Oda-sensei 's own brutal ungodly schedule, I find it amazing how he tries to inspire even his fellow mangaka (or future mangaka) in this way.

I don't know if this has ever been confirmed by Oda: Apperently, it's Loguetown, pronounced as "log-town", like prologue and epilogue. It's famously the birthplace and place of death of Gold Roger.
About the romanization aspect of Rogue or Logue, "ロ" can be read as "ro" or "lo". Japanese people usually don't differentiate between the two. What they actually say in conversation can sound like either.

    • @siegpasta
      @siegpasta 6 місяців тому +1

In Japanese the ロ or ろ is a mix between ro and lo. A literal mix. Which is why it's pretty convenient for made-up words, to have doubble meanings.
At least that's the standard way of speaking japanese. Some people, which I guess have speach imparements, heavily make it an "RRRR" rolling sound, and some a "llllll" no R at all sound. Not sure those are dialects, however I might be wrong.
But basically what you need to remember, is that if the word is made up, such as ラフテル it is impossible to know if the first charachter is supposed to be Ra or La. Hence... some misunderstandings.

  • @Biancaxlai
    @Biancaxlai 6 місяців тому +4

So regarding the use of L and R from Japanese to English, the confusion in translations comes from the fact that the Japanese language does not use the A-Z alphabet, they use Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji characters, which is an entirely different phonetic and writing system from the English alphabet. In the Japanese writing/speaking system, there's only ラリルレロ (pronounced "ra, ri, ru, re, ro", which does NOT have a strong rolling R sound, but sounds more like a mix between L and R to a non-Japanese speaker), and these 5 characters are used to pronounce/translate both L's and R's in the English language.
Loguetown/Roguetown for example, is written as ローグタウン ("ro-gu taun"), and whether the translator chooses to write it as L or R, it would still make a reasonable name for the town. So unless Oda specifically write out the name in English letters, there's no way for the translator to know which is the correct answer. What it comes down to would be context clues, since this place is referred to as the "town of beginnings and ends", Loguetown is the preferred translation since it would in reference to proLOGUE and epiLOGUE.
On a small side note, there's a lot of borrowed English words that Japanese people use on a daily basis. For example, table = テーブル ("te-buru"), regardless of the L or R in the original word, the Japanese reading would still be ル ("ru"). That's why English is often a very hard language for them to learn to write, because Japanese is a phonetic language, each character they use is a syllable they pronounce, but English has a bunch of silent letters and compound sounds like "qu-", "-eau", "-ue", "-ph", "-th". Unless they have prior knowledge of the English word, whether to write it with an L or an R is pretty much a 50/50 gamble, and the vice versa is true when it comes to translating from Japanese to English here.

I think it's also important to add for background knowledge purpose that One Piece is published in Weekly Shounen Jump (WSJ). The magazine provides a survey with each volume and rank the on-going series in its catalogue based on the feedback its readers send in via the mail. This means all the series in WSJ are in a constant state of competition against one another. The higher ranked a series the more likely it gets push up the table of content for each week (though with some delays and buffers), so it's more likely to be shown to new eyes. When series do poorly for some time they risk cancellation, and generally a series would be forced to wrap up its story in time for the debut of a new series that replaces it. This cycle happens every 3-6 months, an amount of time that let a series produce enough chapters to be bound into 1-2 volumes.
One Piece has been continuing for 20 years in this environment and has consistently sits among the top, but in the beginning before it had proved itself One Piece was just like any other series that need to try and make every chapter interesting enough to stay afloat. Although Oda did plan the world and the story beforehand, there were so many uncertainty to whether he would've been able to complete the story or be forced to change the direction of the story by the editor*, which has happened before to several other sereis. This is why it was aimed for 5 years. One PIece was Oda's first series, so as a rookie that was the expectation of success. Back then there were series that while considered a success, had lasted for only around 2-3 years before they were forced out.
    * One Piece is not free from this though not as drastic as some other series. For example, Logue Town was a case where Oda was forced to rush and had to cut out stuff because his editor wanted him to end Logue Town by chapter 100 so they could start Reverse Mountain on chapter 101. Chapter 100 was scheduled for a colour page for the chapter title and the title "The Legend Has Begun".

Thank you for the great discussion. I wanted to add some context to the meta conversation revolving around the medium of manga and how you’re essentially binging a series that was written and originally consumed at a weekly rate. One piece and many of the manga you may be familiar with is released weekly in a magazine called Weekly Shonen Jump. Basically an anthology with all the new chapters for the series you’ve been following. Because of this each manga has to keep audiences hooked week to week lest they risk be dropped by WSJ. So you call the volumes you’re reading ‘books’ which for all intents and purposes is correct. Keep in mind that the volumes are compilations of chapters as opposed to conventional novels that are released as a whole story, broken into chapters. So while a novel may drag at points or have chapters that set up it’s unlikely see a manga do so. Or get away without. That said one piece is now such a global phenomenon that it’s unlikely that it’s even remotely close to the chopping block. But certainly something to keep in mind especially early days.

In regards to the lo/ro sounds, as many have said, in Japanese they are the same character that people just use whichever sound of. It's very likely that Oda, with his love of playing with words and language, would deliberately use that to his advantage when it comes to naming things so that they have multiple meanings using both sounds.
Roguetown fits because it's a place filled with rogues headed to the Grand Line.
Loguetown fits because it's called the town of the Beginning (pro-LOG-ue) and end (epi-LOG-ue). I fully believe Oda decided "Why not both?" because this is not the first time we'll have Ro/Lo issues when it comes to names for stuff and have both words work when representing the named thing by their meaning.

As you stated, he kept everything secret from his audience for 2 years, writing 100 chapters as the damn prologue of his story... which is why it's Logue Town (the town of prologue and epilogue) which also clues us in that the last chapters might be in Logue town. Although, that's just speculation, but it would fit with the word play. And this guy is BIG on his word play.

Yeah Luffy goes into fights with his believe in himself but not much strategy, sometimes while he has a very clear motive and a clear antagonist it isn't until he actually starts fighting that he figures out how he can actually help whomever he's fighting for. In this case it was by destroying Nami's prison which is so beautiful I get choked up if I think too hard about it.

The R and L thing in japanese comes from japanese having only alphabets for ra, ri, ru, re and ro. But for some reason they are pronounced more like la, li, lu, le, lo. And this is why if you write a foreign word like rogue or logue it's really hard to know which one it really means because it can be either.

It's mainly because Japanese use their tongue differently than us non Japanese. L and R sounds have similar movement but different tongue positions. Just like how British, American, and Australian position their tongue differently when they speak and they sound different.

    • @hardboil4033

Btw they are not alphabets, they're syllabary (the more you know😉). That's why Japanese have limited combinations of tongue movement and positions, and may struggle to pronounce foreign words.

Oda's been foreshadowing since Chapter 1. You'll eventually see that. That said, there's arguments that Oda's just really good at linking back to previous stuff, but that in and of itself is a big skill, and even then he'd have to know what to link back to. That shows he knows his story extremely well, from panel 1, onwards.
Possible spoiler below, so don't open unless caught up.
One could say the style he chose to draw OP in is, in itself, a foreshadowing of what is to come. The many instances of sun being shown with luffy in the background. Did anyone else notice Luffy's stance in the colour panel he showed with Nami in the foreground? Because that was VERY Nika.

  • @Iberlos

Not sure if I am late for the party, but here is what I understand from my japanese studies.
There is no "L" sound in the japanese language (download a Hiragana/Katakana sheet and you will see there is no section for "R" particles). However, their "R" sounds are softer then in the english language and if you let your thongue relax while repeating the "R" sound in a word you will notice it will start sounding a bit like an "L".
So, when they trnslate a propper name from japanese to english they take into consideration the Japanese phonetics where "R" sounds like "L".
The names of many characters in Onepiece a written in Katakana. For example, ゾロ, which using a Katakana table translates to "zoro" but a japanese would pronounce it closer to "zolo".
Luffy's name technically is ルフイ(the last particle should be a quarter of the size, but i don't have a Japanese keyboard), which translates directly to RuFui more or less. This is because the "F" sounds are also not present in the japanese language except for フ(Fu). In order to simulate our sounds they combine フ with vowel particles to make similar sounds.
    VERY MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD:
I think Logue Town makes more sense since this is where you are supposed to acquire a Log Pose. I always assumed Logue Town came from this fact. Log -> Logue

I'm not going to lie to you. There are several moments in the series where there's been a significant reveal, and certain portions of the fandom just... full on rioted at the reveal. Hated it, hated the inclusion, thought it ruined the setting.
And then people sat down, thought it out, and went through the earlier chapters and realized, "Oh. This thing has been hinted at since the start of the series. It was always in the story, we've seen it a dozen times already, we just lacked context for what we were seeing." Off hand I can think of three times, two of them in chapters that came out two or three years ago, that had hints (or maybe I should call it supporting evidence to the reveal) seeded through the story... I guess at this point, decades ago.
Once you're caught up, you might be interested in reading the two Romance Dawn chapters, which were sort of pilots/teasers/proof of concepts that he submitted to the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, where he purposefully obfuscated important plot elements for the proper series while also just blatantly, in your face showing off others. There's also a few "data books" that were put out that had Oda's first drafts of characters and so on, including his original concepts for the crew. Which can be a fascinating comparison once you have a proper footing in the series.

So, the R & L thing is similar to Japanese B & V sounds. They overlap and are interchangeable in both the writing of Hiragana or Katakana. Hiragana being the phonetic language for Japanese words and Katakana being the phonetic language for foreign loan words and foreign names. In these translation volumes, especially the early volumes of this 20+ year old ongoing manga several translations for proper nouns was caught up in the air. (L)(R)ogue Town is called the town of beginings and endings, the story's Prologue of Roger's execution happened there and the Epilogue of Roger's own journey was that execution. Logue town the town of beginnings (Prologue) and endings (Epilogue).
That in mind, there is an island that was recently mentioned or is about to be mentioned (I forget the exact location but there is a mention is coming up) where this and other considerations should be applied regarding the translation. Its a, you'll know it when you see it. And consider that in Japanese the consonants and vowel sounds we are familiar with are always paired. Sa, Se, Si, Su. Ta, te, ti, tu. Za, be, bi, bu etc etc and can create some structural inconsistencies where even loan words from English which we would otherwise recognize may take surprising and mistranslated forms.
...don't get me started on Kanji. That system of singular pictogram or multi pictograms being associated with words without phonetic considerations is what knocked me out of being able to successfully learn Japanese years ago.

I love how Dad noticed the importance of Nami's "room", not many people focus on it's meaning and thus it's destruction.
My first contact with OnePiece was the anime (back in good old 1999), and I still remember how Luffy's seemingly blank stare while picking up Nami's bloody quil off the ground made me feel that he understood perfectly well what was happening to her all these years. Luffy doesn't need to know the specifics of one's past because he's intuitive and can understand a person's true character and burden just from small things like this.
Also, (very slight spoiler, I hope Noah is proof reading the comment section for Dad 😅):
Relatively recently we got a small flashback in the manga with Luffy training on his home island before he set sail. When he invented the attack "Gomu Gomu no Battle Axe", he said: "What a powerful move! I will use it when they try to take my nakama away". This is the attack Luffy used to finish off Arlong, destroying Arlong Park in the process. Remembering this, I teared up to those few throw away panels.

in the Japanese "alphabet" (hiragana(native), katakana (foreign)) all of them end in a vowel sound, for example hiragana (a(あ), i(い), u (う), e(え), o(お)) ,
    katakana (a(ア), i(イ), u(ウ), e(エ), o(オ)) ,
the fact is there are no L or R sounds in the language as a whole there is only a sound between the two, so when they try to say a word in a foreign language they use the closest sound they have in that language which is one of the following:

    Hiragana (ra\la (ら), ri\li(り), ru\lu(る), re\le(エ), ro\lo(オ))
    Katakana (ra\la (ラ), ri\li(リ), ru\lu(ル), re\le(レ), ro\lo(ロ))

pronouncing them is tricky and depends on the accent, but to put it simply, try to make an L and an R sound at the same time.

another example of that is that there is no sound for "see" so if you try to say
    "Cesare" would be pronounced
    "shiza" as follows
"shi-za-a" in kana(セザー) (the dash is for extending the last vowel sound)
There is one exception to the vowel thing and that is the N sound

Oda said even recently the story will finish in 5 years... But there is a theory floating around that he actually meant the in-world time following Luffy's journey, which has still not been 5 years (since Luffy's introduction, or when he left to become a pirate). If that is the case, it only comes down to how much detail Oda will give to his telling of the events, which could take many years more.

      @@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches They mean Oda-sensei 's Q&A corner.
You have mentioned in a previous video that you are not very fond of those because most of the questions made by fans seem too silly/pointless.
To their defence: Yes, some of them are silly. But there are also ones who properly introduce or enrich characters, especially side or minor ones who have no time/space to shine (like PandaMan and Minatomo-san the carpenter). Also, some of the silly ones may be more important than you think. Prime example of this is the question about the crew's favourite foods, which is used much later in the story to highlight the tragedy and true emotions of a certain character (Also, in modern Japanese culture your favourite/most hated food, as well as your blood type, say a lot about a person's character. So think of it as a way to know these characters better).
Lastly, because of the lack of space/time Oda-sensei started using the SBSs as a way to give us additional actual information about the OnePiece world. So you can think of them as footnotes or something 😅

I think Luffy values his life. He wouldnt throw it away for no reason. The thing is: he will live his life with no regrets and he knows his priorities. He is going after his dream which will make him the pirate king and if he dies, he dies happy because he was pursuing his dream and he knows he did his best. And he will fight for his friends and not run away from any fight even if it means death. And he's fine with that. And yet there are many character development moments with luffy

There's a very intersting scene during Baratie regarding this with Sanji being willing to sacrificing his life for the restaurant and thus Zeff's dream and Luffy maybe a bit surprisingly with how reckless he can be with his own life sometimes yelling at him and calling him an idiot for it, thinking back to Shanks saving him and losing his arm, and telling Sanji this is not how you repay someone saving your life. But then in contrast to that and in the same arc, he never interferes with Zoro clearly being at the mercy of Mihawk in terms of dying when going after his own dream and he lets him go through with it and only goes after Mihawk after it "is done".
I think the very important notion here is that Luffy thinks it's perfectly fine to risk your life for YOUR dream, that's to him what life is literally there for. It's almost the notion of if you aren't doing what you want most is it even fully living your life? And then yes, further than that he is also willing to risk his own life for those people that are his friends and doing that almost as a stand in if they aren't quite strong enough but still willing. But where he draws the line is sacrificing yourself and your own dream simply for someone else. Putting someone else's dream above your own and holding yourself back for the sake of someone else is I think what is the difference there and the line where Luffy disagrees. When Luffy fights Don Krieg or Arlong then yeah he might also be doing it for Zeff, Sanji and especially then Nami, but he ALSO is doing it for himself and his dream not instead of. He wants to be the Pirate King and thus he himself wants to be able to beat these people, so he isn't chosing his dream and his life to be less valuable than someone elses, but his own dream and life now simply encompasses the others as well and as long as he's giving it his all, he is ok maybe even dying this way.
That's why I think Sanji's way of sacrifice is so different and upsetting to him. Sanji fighting and risking his life for Zeff isn't the issue but Sanji refusing to also fight for himself in the process is.

Another moment that was a duel and luffy didnt interfere (our boy is consistent) was Zoro's and Cabaji's fight. And when Luffy is putting his life on the line for someone he loves is different from Sanji not fighting Pearl and Gin while being kinda satisfied with the whole "sacrifice to pay Zeff back" mindset

@@oznek_m yeah, exactly what I mean. Sanji in that moment with his action is essentially saying he himself and his own dream doesn't matter as much so he can just die to save Zeff. And I think it's that "devaluing" of himself that Luffy opposes there. Risking your life to save someone and fighting to the best of your ability is fine, simply trading your life for someone else especially when that person already did everything in their power to save you and clearly cares as much and more about you than just that restaurant, isn't.
It also speaks to Luffy recognizing what Zeff's "treasure" and dream really is. Yeah, the Baratie is important to Zeff but much more so is Sanji himself. So Sanji isn't even protecting what Zeff truely cares about, he is instead throwing it away in a misguided believe that the Baratie is what Zeff cares about more.
