    Most of the "adult" people reading one piece for the first time really like Usopp, i think its because most of them are a bit more used with recognizing themes, so they see the potential in Usopp. Most kids or teens usually are "i love usopp he is so funny" or "damn this usopp is annoying and coward" (they prefer badasses like zoro).

  • @pretty_Fist
    @pretty_Fist 7 місяців тому +26

    Biggest lie Usopp ever told was that he isnt brave. He was ready to put his life on the line for others from the start without hesitation when it comes down to brass tacks. Hes a coward in downtime, but will ALWAYS stand his ground when there are stakes.

    Yeah, Sanji is who immediately clicked with me and it's because how oda in him clearly portrays the difference between kindness and being friendly/nice and doing it through "customer service" is kind of a great metaphor and example for it. Being friendly around people and being nice is something that is easily faked and that can ultimately be quite shallow and meaningless, while kindness is the "real" thing when you actually care about someone and about what they truely need and are willing to give it to people without any expectations of being rewarded for it. Oda even has this with Patty who pratices being nice for customers who to him are exclusively the people that pay and thus is something HE profits from. In contrast to that Sanji is very much not nice, he is rude and aggressive with Fullbody (even though we also see how he deserves it) but when he then sees someone that is truely down and needs help in some way, even though they aren's nice about it, he helps and with no expected and immediate benefit for himself (it only gets "rewarded" much later, through the extereme cirsumstances and because Gin truely recoginzed the kindness for what it was).
    Sanji from the start is very much a "it matters what you do not what you say and how you portray yourself as" type of character. Sort of the opposite of any sleezy politician that promises the world to make himself look good, but has no intention and care to actually do any of it. Sanji instead is the one that sometimes even pretends he doesn't care, while still moving the world to help you.

    The character that resonated with me the most since the beginning was Sanji. The way he has a hard time expressing it but he is so clearly kind and dedicates himself to that kindness despite the potential risks really made me fall in love with him. Things that come later made me understand more why his character resonates with me but just like dad i already felt it early on without even knowing why

    The main 2 things I love about Eiichiro Oda as a writer, is;
    1. his confidence at writing. How? Without spoiling anything, if the guy gets an idea. He will damn well stick to it. and he doesnt care, he WILL stick to it. It goes so far as he will deliberatly only reveal certain things on certain chapter numbers because the word play in japanese matches with the theme of that chapter or the reveal AND so much moer. Sometimes it's not just 1 connection but several.
    I think that is my nr. 1 favourite author trait by Oda.
    2. his ability to write believable charachters that are driven by motivations as if they were actually real.
    This constitutes us, the readers, to actually feel like the world is real. What alot of people praise him for "world building" isn't just about making up massive swath's of land on the fly and calling it "I done built a world!" no.
    The entire world could be limited to a damn city, but if the author is skilled at writing charachters, that city will become so real in your imagination that it will feel like real people inhabits that place and in turn, that city will feel real.
    This is the essence of "world building" and I hope more people will discuss about it. because many people missunderstand it, especially in One Piece, since... well I don't wanna spoil but if u know you know. Geography plays a big deal afterall.

    As you mentioned the beauty of re-reads, Baratie is actually the arc that kind of keeps fascinating me more and more the further we get.
    E.g. as much as Don Krieg is often seen as a more unimportant villain, there are arcs and other characters 100s of chapters later that to me very much elevate what Don Krieg represents in the arc where Luffy defeats him and recruits Sanji.
    I'm trying to be super vague here, but just saying there's a specific character down the line that has a very similar mindset when it comes to how he treats his subordinates, how he is willing to use whatever methods to succeed and how he "creates" a sort of false loyalty from people and seeing Luffy defeat someone like that just hits differently knowing now about that other character and what he eventually represents.

      @@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches I might come off as an asshole, but I am personally worried if you maintain this pacing. Not of your videos per say, rather the amount of chapters you read. Read at your own pace, but I would like to show a little calculation I made.
      At the current pace you're taking. You will reach chapter 1150 in 10.6 years. By that point, the manga for one piece would've already ended years before. And that calculation is without counting the new chapters that will be released weekly. So let's add around 4 extra years for you to finish. This is also without counting hiccups, life situations, and other hypothetical.
      Lastly, I would like to inform you that near the end of One Piece, there will almost surely be a huge influx of spoilers around the internet like never before, so do be careful after that happens. That's all. Just wanted to share my 2 cents.

    35:15 A really important thing Oda shows through Luffy is that a character's personality does not need to have a drastic change for said character to have grown immensely, and I think Oda did a wonderful job showing that with Luffy, because when you compare today's luffy to romance Dawn Luffy, he acts the same and IS the good old Luffy we know while still being completely different, because despite everything that happens Luffy will always be Luffy, it kinda makes you feel like you've grown with him and the crew. The biggest trait showing how much he evolved though is through his role as a captain, but as shown in the east blue saga he always had that quality in the first place. Anyways sorry for the rant Luffy has been my favorite character since I started OP years ago thus my passion x) Thank you guys for these wonderful videos as usual and hope you continue to enjoy it !!!

    The character that resonates with me the most is Luffy. His resolve, wisdom, resilience, emotional intelligence, care, faith in his friends, etc. inspire me. He knows his strengths and weaknesses, and does not have an issue relying on others when he needs to. He trusts his found family to cover for him when he needs them to and in return, they know that they can count on him when they need to. I love it.
    Besides, he's a goof and an absolute force to be reckoned with.

  • @yuukinoyuki9064
    @yuukinoyuki9064 7 місяців тому +4

    Two characters that really resonate with me are Luffy and a future pirate captain (left unamed since I'm not sure what the threshold for spoilers are.)
    The story trope that always bothered me growing up was the misunderstanding trope. Where someone would overhear part of a conversation, or be told a falsehood by a third party, and immediately jump to the wrong conclusion. The conclusion the narrative was pushing for, of course, but the wrong one nonetheless.
    Luffy, for all that he's a bull-headed character who rushes into battle headfirst, wants information firsthand. He will not hear gossip, or half-words, and lose faith in his friends. He's going to walk straight up to you and ask, "hey, what's your side?" or "what do you want?"
    It's more than baseless/blind faith, its a level of respect for those around him that makes him both a wonderful friend and powerful leader.
    I also appreciate that he's very practical minded. Koby wants to be a Marine? Stop whinning, get off Alvida's ship, and join up. We need a cook? There's a cook. Let's get him to join. Etc.
    As for that other Captain, in short (and avoiding all spoilers), he's a chessmaster type character. He likes to plan his moves in advanced. I'm always drawn to those characters because I am a planner. Add in the fact that he seems to have the positive atributes of a good Captain - the faith/loyalty of his crew, their wellbeing kept in mind, etc - and he's the character I look at and think, "that's probably the type of Pirate I'd be in this world."

    In regards to powerscaling and Nami and how bad-ass she was in Arlong Park... let's remember: the reason she needed help in Arlong Park was because she was helpless against Arlong. Yes, she's a very tough cookie, but there is a reason why she could not direct Arlong and his cronies directly. She's more brain than brawn, even if you might think of her as one of the more combat-capable characters compared to Usopp and even Chopper. She's simply physically outmatched by her surroundings, and will continue to be in many ways when aboard a ship with monsters like Luffy, Zoro and Sanji. It does not make her weak; the few times in the series when we get to see her shine on her own among people who aren't as ridiculous, she's a powerhouse in her own right that others learn to tiptoe around. Or if I were to put powerlevels in tiers, she's probably a high B+. She owns other Bs and below, struggles immensely against As and runs like hell when facing the S tiers.
    Regarding the shonen 'ever-increasing climaxes' issue, it just is and follows very heavy from a need to release on a week-to-week basis. Fights that end too quickly would in a way make the villain that was weeks, months or even years building up towards into a paper tiger.
    Regarding crap-geezer, I hate that too. For me it is that it feels so artificial; I prefer the fan-translated versions (maybe it was in anime?) where it was a blunt 'shitty geezer' and 'shitty old man', maybe a bit of 'that old fart'. You get the gist. Stuff that just rolls off the tongue conversationally and feels more like stuff a kid would say. 'Crappy geezer' just doesn't fit a kid living in the middle of a bunch of violent pirate cooks who also raise him, even after we learn more about Sanji later in the series. It's just too.. not like Sanji. I can't describe it any better. The repetitiveness of Sanji disrespecting Zeff in spoken language I have no issues with; it is their dynamic. Zeff's called him 'little eggplant' for as long as he's known him, and Sanji retaliated in kind with an insulting nickname of his own.
    In terms of page layout and battles, I definitely agree that there is growth there for Oda. (But that's honestly true for his work in ALL aspects like storytelling too; it is his life's work and his first serialized work, whereas his previous works were one-shots produced with less of a clock involved. And he worked as an assistant on other manga prior to that!) But even though he grows, I think it is fair to say that Oda never becomes a top-tier battle drawer. He's more than capable, but I don't think he ever reaches S-tier; he's more of a stable A-tier. However, that is not all there is to page layout. One thing he excels at is the narrative story over time as a part of the page layout. He can use a single panel to show off a bustling party and how time progresses within that single panel. He can use a combination of panels to show off just how large the scale is of a particular event that would have lasted minutes. (I'd be more specific, but spoilers and all that.. I think many people here will know what I refer to though.) His mastery over directing the eyes to where he wants you to look and making you feel the passage of time is incredibly high and is something that I feel many other artists who are stronger at battle choreography tends to lose out in. Combined with his ability to interweave comedy and its punchlines with what seems no effort, as well as his ability to create an immersive deep world with compelling characters and relationships on a weekly release schedule that no other manga I know of rivals.. I'm happy with this being what he is weak at!

      "Fights that end too quickly would in a way make the villain that was weeks, months or even years building up towards into a paper tiger." Fair point. I hadn't thought of that. Maybe I'm biased by too many movies where character development is sacrificed for action. I hate that. Thanks for the reminder on the translation issue. I will try to keep that in mind. I expect that I will see the development of Oda as a storyteller over the course of this journey, much the same way you see Rowling develop as a writer over the course of the HP series. I think she truly arrived as a writer in book 6. I'll be looking at this as I read more. Your comment is fantastic! Thanks, Dad

    i think the reason the moment with nami is the "hook" for alot of people is because anime/manga isnt new territory for us like it is for dad. everything before that was great but that moment was different when what we are use to. its when you really realize this isnt the typical hero battle adventure manga, every other story the "hero" would have jumped in to help nami way way before without waiting for permission simply because thats what a hero does. it kinda showed us that luffy isnt the "hero", luffy isnt just another main character like all the other mangas. luffy is simply a friend that lives by his own unique rules.

  • @KuraishiRei
    @KuraishiRei 7 місяців тому +4

    21:36 Just to add to your point about "Baratie never ended", I agree that is common in battle Shounens but Oda is not like that, the arcs and major villains in East Blue all set up a characteristic in Luffy that makes him a character that deserves to be followed. Don Krieg show the readers Luffys tenacity, his will to never give up, even when the enemy keeps on coming, Luffy will always be the last one to fall, and that's why this battle is longer than normal. Buggy show us what "treasure" means to Luffy and Arlong show that he has the strength and is the strongest to get what he wants and to protects his friends.

    I saw the original video with your dad last year and loved it. Then I just stumbled upon all these updates and I’ve just binged all of them in one evening while I sit and catch up on some sewing. Richard, it’s a joy to hear your journey into this wonderful world. I fell into One Piece as a new parent at the height of the pandemic. It was this surreal alternative reality that has been both intimate and lonely. No one in my life has a clue what One Piece is. There’s something really wonderful about witnessing someone else discover it and feel all the feelings about it. And I almost live vicariously through Noah because I love how he gets to share this with you. The only other thing I’ll say is how special it is to experience this story for the first time - treasure it! And take your time. You only get to do that once and when you’re early in the story it’s hard to understand what you’re really getting into. This has been described as a modern epic on par with The Odyssey, and on a level with the greatest fantasy works of literature. I heard that stuff being said when I was still in the east blue and I sort of rolled my eyes. But trust me, a thousand chapters later and you will know that truth to your core. Enjoy your journey. I really look forward to hearing more about it

    09:34 Similar emotional reactions to characters? With many and not only crew wise. A 'favorite'? Yes, but from further. If finished Arlong Park, Nami. Altho one in a disappointing way? Yes, but I understood them later, like you did with that scene and won't say who.
    10:00 Usopp. The channel Otakubroz capture it vividly. In a real world, his struggles have weight but gets shadowed by extreme comparisons. When he gets slapped by his loved girl and called pathethic? They feel it.
    12:35 That hair out was gorgeous, Noah, damn.
    15:20 It's fine to thread something, don't hold back into something good to talk. Altho, it's nice that you have some tracks to get by and back.
    15:28 That Luffy line is amazing, Dad. He seems a simpleton but because as a powerhouse, he can be. And as you captured, he has lived things to be wise about. What do you imagine his childhood to be like before and after Shanks?
    16:15 YES. THAT FEELING. And glad that you put pages down.
    21:30 Not sure if I don't like it in the manga. But I would agree with you. The anime (genre) gets tiring and for me feels like the dialogue also makes pacing crazy.
    22:15 You are in for a banquet of grit characters, very interested for some non popular ones, like Gin!
    24:19 I'd like to hear more of the patterns on the series or how do you imagine the storyline to work.
    26:30 The audiovisual definitely emerges more out of the viewer, good story but also builded great on anime.
    27:33 I agree 100% that many missed, but people are and read different, yes.
    35:10 I would add that it's peculiar how Luffy is so steadfast to some people. He has reasons and it shows he don't trust anyone but it's very unique. You cannot wonder what if he is wrong about Nami as an example.
    37:10 Noah does a great job explaining but at the end could seems shallow. Because it's not clear what are the challenges of becoming this King of the Pirates. And we understand that it is part of the fun and journey, even if Mihawk says to him: a hard path, even harder than overcoming me.
    42:40 Zero disappointment. As long as you have fun, we have fun and it's all good.
    44:34 Also have a hard time with slowing down and paying attention to the art. But as Noah, we always go back to it to pick the pieces. The action is hard but practice gets it.

    There is a really great video essay about the help me moment that explain that Luffy is selfishly selfless. That he doesn't help or care about the stuff going on with Nami until she directly asks for help. If you notice, with every backstory, Luffy doesn't know any one. He walks away before Nojiko can tell it to the Straw Hats. There's one where he falls asleep at the very beginning of it. He doesn't care about your past, only present moment and how that person is feeling. Luffy also is incredibly emotionally intelligent. He's able to tell a good guy and a bad guy and can tell who is faking what (for the most part.)
    When it comes to character development, Luffy flips between static and dynamic depending on the saga. For example, one of the sagas is about choosing leadership. And in that saga, Luffy is static. But there's another saga where Luffy has to learn that being a leader also means being responsible, so he's a dynamic character in that saga. One Piece is so long that character development is incredibly subtle. And you're 100% it's the story of a man becoming a king, becoming a leader. The first real instance of that is Drum Island.

I understand what are you saying and how this could relate/work in other media but this is One Piece, I just want to hear you having having a good time, discovering a new media, what do you think about, literally, anything. Also, a guy and his Dad reading one piece together? Love it.

    To answer Dad about the character, mine is easy. Monkey D. Luffy.
    I can't tell you all the reasons because of spoilers, but I can say this: I love ALL the strawhats, some more than others, but all of them have a huge place in my heart.
    That being said, I am so emotionally connected to Luffy that when I see him suffering, I suffer like I was watching a family member suffering. Likewise, when he is happy, I feel happy for him.
    I don't resonate with him because I'm like him. I do it because Luffy is the person I want to become, and I'm not talking about surface traits like his goofiness.
    Luffy truly understand others. He has the courage to follow his dream, to defend his friends, to speak out loud what he wants, no mather what others think. He suffer, and goes back again. He always keeps his word. He is kind, a good leader, he has persistence, etc, etc.
    And the more you watch One Piece, the more you understand Luffy, and you will see that his dream to become the king of the pirates has a lot more to it that it seems.
    He is the kind of friend I would love to have, the kind of leader I would follow to the end of the world... And the kind of person I would like to be.

    Arlong was mocking Zoro who was winded due to his injuries but once Arlong ripped the bandage off a screaming Zoro followed by splashes of blood did Arlong see what Zoro had while fighting his lieutenants and it shook Arlong to see someone able to fight his kind with such serious injuries, it really shows how Arlong realize the danger Zoro poses and why he wants to end him before he can have a chance to really heal.

    I've been enjoying your videos and sorry if this has already been suggested - but have you considered switching the review style to go arc by arc? It's been a little strange getting dad's thoughts on half of Baratie last video, then the other half this video, then most of Arlong Park up to Nami's moment this video, but it's still missing the final conflict with Arlong and the arc's satisfying conclusion. So, it's been a bit strange getting these opinions on partial arcs.

    • @PorkChopsRiceandPeaches
      @PorkChopsRiceandPeaches  7 місяців тому +1

      It's something that's been suggested and I'm heavily considering. The structure of the volumes is odd, but we've found they are the best format for dad to read in batches, and easier atm for making videos on our end. I'm looking ahead to see if the longer arcs are better contained within future volumes, because I feel like Alabasta, Skypeia, and other big arcs would be better for entire videos. I understand the issues on the viewer's end, and we'll probably switch to covering whole arcs after we leave East Blue.

    Oda himself has said he is not great at battle chirography. This, combined with the fact that it is in fact a skill to follow the action in battle panels even if it is expertly drawn, can make the One Piece manga experience a bit more challenging for beginners. And it gets more chaotic with time, for better and for worse. What Oda excels at is showing the story in a world and its characters. But the battle scene in itself is definitely not One Piece's strong suit, it's the emotion behind it.

    For me, Sanji, and Brook i can resonate with the most. Sanji for his kindness, love of food, and self sacrfice mindset. Brook, for the Isolation, due to a trauma, and show emotions thought his craft. Both represent the works well done, silently. Also both can't handle women 'normally' due to past traumas, expressing themself in ways they can, that can be labeled as pervy, but only because they don't sugar coat it with charm.

    I think something to keep in mind when going through OP both for analytical purposes & just for fun is how old Oda was when writing it. IIRC Oda was 22 when the manga first started so at the point yall are at now he'd be like 23-24. Also it is his first & only manga he's written.

  • @amna5506
    @amna5506 7 місяців тому +1

    Another interesting thing I've realized upon several rereads is that I feel like when Luffy refuses to believe that Nami would hurt or kill a crew member, that's not him being blindly trusting people like I initially thought, rather he's such a good judge of character that the idea is ridiculous to him. He trusts his assessment of the individual over anyone's words, and that's because he understands people at a fundamental level. That's why he never needs to know people's backstories, his actions entirely rely on the judgement he's made for himself. We see this so many times going forward as well, and viewers often dismiss it as him being gullible or easily trusting when I don't think that's the case at all. Luffy may be an idiot but he's an emotionally intelligent idiot!
    Also, great video as usual! I like the spontaniety of the conversation, it feels more cozy.

    Usopp is a great character to get invested in. Like he said the progression comes slow. BUT Usopp is the everyday man trying to catch up to "Monsters" So to Speak. Even Nami has some obvious talents that are far and above and is from the get go essential to the crew. Usopp often feels like the odd man out. Like other than friendship you kinda wonder WHY he is there. How does he fit in to this miss fit group of power houses.
    When you are more looking at it through adult eyes and not common shonen trope eyes he is the thing that does not belong so he draws your eye. But Oda does a great job of also GIVING you that hint of why and that hint of what he could be. So whether you realize that potential is there or not. When he lives up to that potential it is AMAZING. But when he fails to show growth or even back slides it is frustrating. But he feels like a real character trying to change.
    Basically I love ALL the straw hats for different Reasons. Almost equally. But My Fav is Luffy. Its his duality between being a care free fun loving idiot. But also being incredibly emotionally intelligent and dedicated to his crew and Ideals. He is a wonderful mixture of it and honestly through out the series it comes out even more.

    for me, that character i resonated with was nami! i first watched and then read one piece when i was a young teenager who was socialized as a girl (though ive never been very attached to that label), and nami was so different from other "girl character"s in other stories i was seeing back then. you know, because there are a LOT of early 2000s, late 90s properties that have the ONE female character😅 i immediately loved how much of a little asshole she is, how honest she is about her intentions (she says well im only teaming up with you, were not friends) but how dishonest she is about what she is actually feels and thinks. and THEN arlong park came around and i thought (and still think) shes one of the strongest people out there. she basically has sacrificed her life, her time, her morals to her sister and the people of her town. ARGHH it breaks my heart every time!!!! now my favourite character is luffy, but robin and nami are close behind. i have her tattoo on my arm. i love her.

    21:08 This is why Fullmetal Alchemist is great. The final battle is large scale and strategic but the actual final boss is short and to the point. Then there are final battles in shounen like My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen that just go on forever. It's even more egregious how dragged out these are in newer series when you realise the rest of these series are much shorter than older shounen like Bleach and Naruto.
