It seems like in Japan a common superstition is "idiots don't get sick" or something along those lines. So when the characters admit they don't get sick, they're just indirectly admitting the audience that they are indeed stupid. Any nonsensical line like that in One Piece generally has a cultural, Japanese-specific reasoning, usually adding additional layers to jokes
Its something like idiots are too stupid to catch a cold.
ahahahahaha Got em! "When does a Man Truly Die?" When Chopper walks in the door. with his broken leg Oh My Goodness. everytime
@@Nastyn1nja808 this arc hurts so good -Noah
I think this is where the story first broke me as well. This series has a way of making you cry like an ugly girl more often than you’d expect. One thing I love about One Piece is how much deeper it is than it initially appears. Despite Oda drawing some of the goofiest characters, he writes about deeply moving and relatable issues.
One of the biggest gripes people have about the series is its length, but I see that as one of its strengths. The sheer amount of time you spend with the characters makes you so invested in them that they begin to feel like family. It’s similar to Harry Potter in the way it allows readers to grow with the characters.
It’s truly beautiful how these fictional characters can feel so real and like family to me. You’re doing the right thing by taking your time with it. Enjoy the ride-you’re in for an odyssey of epic proportions! 🎉

"how powerful is Blackbeard?" i was listening without watching and i almost chocked up.
Not talking about the legendary quote "when does a man die" is criminal.
With humble apologies...I'm digesting SO much. - Dad
Damn Oda, YOU had to get involved...
i feel like drum island had me pondering about medical ethics a lot. when i was younger, one of my many dreams was to be a doctor, to care for ppl. but oda poses a question on an individual's readiness for the moral, emotional, physical and maybe even spiritual responsibility of becoming one. u have kureha who's excellent at it but lacks the emotional capacity to outwardly emphatize with most of her patients. i also love how oda made her the age she's at in the story which i used to think was for comedic purposes but it makes more sense to think about how her being that age might've put her in that indifferent state in the first place. like.. her age, the experience she has from years of providing care turned her stoic. then u have another imperfect doctor in hiriluk who sucks at it but has all the empathy and care in the world to give, just no one to give it to bcs he's a loner. in his attempt to connect to ppl, he risks hurting them due to his lack of knowledge and skills and it further pushes ppl away. then u have chopper, who after all the pain he's gone thru, receives two very important aspects to being a doctor from his two mentors, almost making him a perfect doctor. all three types of doctors exist in irl medical field. i'm not the best at explaining things and making my points cohesive but i hope i'm making sense
@MaiZ14 this is wonderfully said, you truly summarized medicine and bedside manner perfectly. I've worked with all three, passionate but less skilled, highly skilled but disassociated, and the perfect mix of bedside and medical prowess. This is a fantastic perspective, thank you for sharing! -Noah
You're making perfect sense. Thanks for sharing!
Crying over a comic about a rubber man. One Piece is a JOURNEY!!!! I’m so glad you’re loving this series
One thing to tie the bit about seasons around to the ending of Drum Island is the concoction that Dr. Hiriluk makes. Drum Island being what seems like a perpetual Winter island means it doesn't really experience Spring. With winter traditionally symbolizing death, all types of coldness, and even a freezing of time (like in a snow globe) - a stillness, it isn't until Wapol is defeated and we see the "cherry blossoms" bloom that we understand now that Spring has arrived, Spring symbolizing growth, rejuvenation, a new start. It arrives for the island and it's people, and more specifically to Dalton and Chopper.
One of my fav arcs, the most innocent Chopper our beloved, in the land of emotions and snow. Can't wait for Dad reaction reveal to this one!!
Ah Luffy he really proves how far he’ll go for his care and Vivi planting the seeds for the leader he’ll become. Chopper has such an incredible debut to the story what a story I still tear up hearing his story
Ive been on One Piece for around 16 years already. And at this point, after several rewatches and rereading I just have Drum Island going higher and higher on my list. Such an amazing arc it is.
Also, first time checking this channel! Just clicked out of curiosity and the drum island title and got quite a surprise.
Great analysis and what a sweet relationship you both have.
Enjoy the One Piece! Ill be checking this channel updates on the future for sure.
@diegoperezsommariva2509 thanks for stopping in and watching! We really appreciate it, glad you enjoyed! -Noah
I'm not too much of a reader. I'm caught up in the anime, and then continued the manga from there until I was caught up. But I love when people that have ready many books (and especially when they teach literature), and they pull many of the potential inspirations behind One Piece. It's amazing how inspired One Piece is that I actually learn (from Oda and other people reviewing the series) about history and other literature. And I also get ecstatic when I notice other forms of story-telling that have been clearly inspired from One Piece. It's a beautiful cycle.
“When does a man die? When they are shot through the heart by the bullet of a pistol? No. When they are ravaged by an incurable disease? No. When they drink a soup made from a poisonous mushroom!? No! It’s when… they are forgotten.”
***The bow to "Hiking Bear". & the joke returning on the enormously large woman...... classic***
This is easily my most favorite One Piece review series on UA-cam. Your note taking and multiple read-through dedication are really inspiring. I'm reading along at your pace, Richard. Can't wait for the next one!
Also, I liked the little detail of how the cable car to the top of the mountain is modeled after the Amiudake mushroom (right?). Basically carrying its poison (Wapol) from the king's castle to its citizens.
I never noticed that.... wow -Noah
I really enjoy to watch your journey. You two have such a good vibe enjoying this together. Its nice to see such a good dad-son connection.
@PresidentScrooge thank you! We really enjoy making these videos, and we enjoy everyone's responses!

I've been into one piece for over ten years now and rereading drum island made me cry even more than it did the first time. I love that there's bits in one piece that you read as a kid and maybe get emotional over but getting older and having more lived experience and then going back to the story just reveals so many more layers of emotion
Finally Drum Island. Im glad you loved it. Tony Tony Chopper has one of my favorite introductions in this series.
Great timing on this episode. Temperature was in the teens for us today, so perfect day to cozy up and listen to a wintery drum island review!
@Dublin.655 was totally intentional, we definitely didn't time it this way because we got behind on our schedule, not at all 😅
@@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches Oh totally on purpose. I can see the vision! (your secret is safe with me...and the comment section)
This man was worried about the goofiness haha
So glad you are enjoying the journey!
Love how you dissect and analyze the content. Luffy defending the jolly roger of another pirate crew on principle alone shows you the weight of flying that flag in this world. Going back to your earlier notes on Luffy understanding that everyone has their own treasure, Luffy really can see through the truth of things to what someone values as their treasure. Oda is writing a current day epic, in the same sense as Greek myths, the world building, the lessons on love, duty, loyalty and fighting for what matters to you, the importance of asking for help, learning and growing.
I have been loving catching up with this series from the first One Piece introduction video-> to the Breathtaking world of One Piece-> to the live actions-> to the announcement-> and then finally to the full review videos. There is so much I am looking forward to it's killing me lol

16:24 also Kureha used a "White Rope" so it looked like flying!! all the other ropes are normal and visible in the snowy sky.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that! Thanks for pointing that out! -Noah
I am loving these analyses!
21:52 Luffy give Vivi his Hat when he Fights the Giant.
51:36 This line to me is so evident of Oda's method. Constructing a given character's backstory from the get-go only in his mind and making the world accommodate it in the most subtle ways without revealing it fully until who knows when. In this case, 20 real-life years down the line. Just amazing.
P.S. (Spoiler stuff) Why this line is important is the lines before it. The lines before make it unmistakably a foreshadowing moment. Don't look up the lines if you don't want a mild spoiler for Chapter 900's.
I've been sick the last 4 days and so have watched your entire OP back catalogue and I'm so happy there's now dadpiece to match mompiece. Watching these videos has been so enjoyable it makes me wish my own father was still here to share this story with him like you two have been able to ❤

The one peak has begun with this arc. Imo from here it only goes up. Im always a bit jealous i can never experience it for the first time again, bjt I am still surprised of the impact many scenes still have on me whenever I reread oder rewatch them, how many stories can claim to let you break down in tears after reading it for a hundred times...
I love how you re digging into this!
Very very good!
Let's go I love these one piece videos ❤
Finally got to watch this. Such a good discussion. I loved the breakdown on what it means to be a monster and what it means to be a pirate. Similar idea. Everyone has their own definitions and those definitions can drive who they are. Wapol saw pirates as lawless vagabonds, Blackbeard is more about power, but Luffy and the strawhats are all about freedom. It's a cool theme that keeps bringing me back to discussions like this even after years reading and rereading the series.
been waiting for this!!! happy holidays!
Happy Holidays! Thanks for watching!!
While I'm sure a lot of people were expecting a discussion about "When does a man die" I honestly appreciate that you didn't, even though I am still interested in your thoughts on it. It's such a powerful moment and it would be obvious to point out but instead you dive as deep as possible into smaller moments that may not be given much thought by most readers. As someone that has grown up with One Piece, watching the anime since I was about 6 years old now about to turn 29, I have come to learn that Oda loves to use little unsuspecting moments for foreshadowing. There's certainly more obvious moments but the number of small events or moments of dialogue that are easily glanced over that end up being relevant, sometimes even years later in the production of the story can't be underestimated.
Hiruluk’s “when does a man die” monologue will always bring me close to tears without fail 😢
It cartoon, why I cry 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
42:12 i think these distinct Luffy forms you notice are an artistic choice common in manga.
Chapter 33 of JJK has some good examples. The mc has some very simplified drawings, as simple as a smiley face almost, and its usually meant as a form of comedic relief.
Kind of as if joke section allow for simple doodles and serious fights require more realistic drawings, with shadows and shading and defined muscles etc. One Punch Man is another great example
Mangakas are often overworked and have to draw a lot and write a lot, and editors suggest changes and it's pretty tough with all the deadlines. It's said that the reason the most iconic manga character transformation, Super Sayan, has blonde hair is that in the manga its not colored and that saved them the trouble of coloring.
Yes, it's easy to identify serious Luffy and Goofy Luffy, but "in universe", "irl" they'd look the same, probably one could still tell from his facial expressions but its not as if suddenly his hands becomes more realistic
Im not sure if that was his understanding
45:39 ok, i commented too soon
I love that you mentioned the Warner Brothers esque looney toons way that Oda was inspired to make this show. No spoilers of course.
Also wanted to die inside as well when he talked about vivi being part of the crew haha. Screen shot the face toward the camera. Love yall. lol
great video
Richard, I _need_ that shirt!
I also think he initially didn't want to draw Chopper even as cute as he did in the beginning, but his editor stepped in.
Also, fun fact, while Chopper is obviously influenced by Rudolph, Kureha is also influenced by a Christmas character : Befana, the Italian witch who takes on the role of Santa, bringing candy or garlic to kids
I appreciate you noticing and acknowledging the the theme of leadership.
In my opinion, the major theme of Romance Dawn was the dreams and motivations that drove the characters to join and follow Luffy, and for the first arcs of the Grand Line i feel like the main theme is leadership.
Now that everyone has joined, How do you manage that? What makes a good leader? and What decision is the right call?
All of this culiminates in Water 7 (you know the two major character conflicts) but throughout the previous arcs Luffy and other characters have challenges that forces them to learn how to deal with people that follow you and the position of leader.
Let me know if you feel the same as I do,
Love your videos :)

38:29 there you go!
So i actually did the math on Chopper's age using everything we know from the story and the SBS. (using the human equivalent of reindeer lifespan)
Chopper was 7 months old when he ate the Devil Fruit, and when he meets the Straw Hats he is 7 years old.
First, we know that chopper was 9 human years old when he ate the fruit ate the fruit. I used the math that is used to calculate Cat to Human years since cats have a similar lifespan. A reindeer live 15-20 years.
Cats first year is roughly 15 human years.
9/15=0.6 (this is 0.6 years)
0.6*12=7.2 (12=months in year, 0.6 years = 7.2 months)
This means that Chopper was 7 months old when he ate the fruit, the equivalent of 9 human years.
The flashback was 6 years in the past, 6+9=15. This lines ups with what we have been told about how old Chopper is when meeting the Straw Hats, 15 human years old.
So Chopper is 7 years old.
An hour! Nice! Something long to listen to 😊
Dalton being accepted while Chopper isn't just drives the "what is a monster" part in more, and it's also the reason Dalton sympathizes with Chopper - it's likely that he, too, was referred to as a monster a long time ago, when he first got his fruit.
Arguably, every character introduced in Drum is a "monster" in some aspect - Doctorine Kureha is a witch that steals people's possessions, Hiriluk barges into people's homes and "cures" them at gunpoint, Dalton was head of Wapol's military (arguably him turning into a bison is representation of his more "cruel" or "bestial" past and his wish to hide it, the first time we see him use it is in direct connection to Wapol's return), the villagers of drum rejected helping a "human" in distress because he looked weird, the 20MDs would rather keep themselves alive than disobey Wapol. And Wapol is Wapol.
Chopper was called a monster for purely superficial reasons. Which drives the fear of being ostracized even harder, and is a thing people that have felt ostracized, especially as children, can empathize with; "all of the people around you are in some ways horrible people, why are you being pushed away and ridiculed because you, I don't know, like spiders?"
1:02:00 ikr? Im dying of waiting too
Loved the vídeo. I'm eager for the next one. Also, You might want to remove a certain doll from your shelf. I know it seems soon to be worried about this but if you remove the doll closer to the arc where it is importat your father might notice. The doll I'm talking about is the one with a "dragon claw".
Edit: I forgot to add the reason. The doll might spoil the future of this character. But maybe I'm being too paranoid on this
Honestly, I didn't notice. Or if I did, I forgot about it. And if I see it again, I won't care. You know, I'm still really nervous about these episodes. Ya'll know SO much and I am such an OP neophyte. The background won't spoil anything. - Dad
Ladies and Gentlemen, we got him!
If he cries about Drum Islands, there are so many tears to be shed in the future.😅
An hour lmao i love it
can we get much higher
"so high~"
Yes..I know all the references my guy is making..I only caught it upon rewatching it the 3rd time...the bar one.
The seasons are explanation for just how different similar 'types' of islands are, and why the weather is as weird as it is between islands as well as how to tell when you've come closer to an island while on the GL. You have four 'grades' of season, denoted by different seasons. Winter islands are always colder than the others, Summer islands always hotter. The second classification just gives you what season they're currently experiencing on the island. That way you can have a winter island that is experiencing a harsh winter right next to a warm spring island in the middle of summer and there'd be no logical issue with it because the logic of the Grand Line is twisted in comparison to the rest of the world, where the seasons don't change from island to island but are instead more along the lines of Earth's seasons and based on where they are in the world.
Due to the different seasonal changes from island to island, the weather is incredibly unstable unless you get close to an island - then the weather stabilizes into whatever season that island is going through. So Drum is currently a Winter/Winter island, while Little Garden is likely a Summer/Spring or Summer island when we visited (we don't know for sure).
38:22 😂 😊
as to the not getting sick part, it's also a rather common trope in manga that "idiots" don't get sick... so this play with that trope, even if neither Sanji nor Usopp would necessarily qualify under that label... though both have enough "qualities" that could be counted for the idiot scale (Sanji blind and over the top simping; Usopps flamboyant lying and struggle with standing up for himself and others)
so many interesting observations of nuances that evaded me .... man, I am such a lazy vibes reader :D
Choppers backstory is so destructive, always a tearjerker
Basically... Winter Islands are always cold... BUT in winter they are doubly cold while during summer they are Just plain cold...
While a Summer Island in Summer would possibly be scalding... while the summer island in winter would be just plain hot...
And the "stable weather" is the fact that islands in and of themselves have that "fixed" weather... while the sea is always changing left and right... but if you get near an island in the sea while still on water and the weather is not changing crazily it means that you are already within the territory of an islnd with one of those fixed weathers...
1:04:13 When he said he couldn't read it, I thought it was because the text was in Japanese or something since I was listening to this while working on something else. But it turns out he couldn't read it because it would make him cry again haha

When we film these, it feels like 20 minutes. - Dad
@Arbysarmy it feels like it when you really like the topic you're talking about😆. And honestly we One Piece fans like long form content happy to see you onboard with One piece🫶.
I read somewhere where someone pointed out that Kureha and Hiruluk are the two extremes of what a doctor is and that they are essentially Chopper's "parents". Kureha has the expertise but lacks the empathy for the people. Hiruluk has all the empathy but lacks the expertise. And the perfect mixture of them exists in Chopper. (though you can argue Hiruluk's sacrifice changes Kureha a bit as well)
8:20 small fact, Nami means wave (same root of the word tsunami)🍊

Since there is a lot of connections with the word "monster" in this video, maybe he should read the one shot Monster Oda made before starting doing One Piece, when you guys get past Triller Bark.
I would love to see him react to the art style and storytelling of Oda, when he had just started beeing a mangaka.

@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches yes!
Zoan transforms in an animal, Logia is an elemental fruit and Paramythia allows your body to Change but not with animal or elemental powers.
Not a mention to Hiriluk's magnificent speach about the definition of Death? - that's the big miss. The other big miss is Oda's critique to countries that have health systems that only care about people that have money, for example the USA.
This is sad man..my main comment is not getting registered..one complaining one got in..I edited it out to replace with main..
my other new one got in..and that one got out...
Ok..this is in..trying to edit.
Upon Dad's note on nothing made him choke up like OnePiece..
it re-established my faith in this series ability as well.
You see, as a teenager, lots come aboard, lots shrug it off saying it has Bad artstyle...cz they have other things to compare it with, might be cooler and flashy as well, thats how the mind goes in that age.
Then some in their mid to late 20s, pick up this series, and they are able to appreciate the themes, and say, man I was late but glad I picked it up.
Those who are already into this anime-manga, particularly Shonen (Young Boys magazine), which publishes OnePiece..past their mid 30s, starts to say things like..their Shonen exhaustion is kicking in....because they see everything with the lens of Tropes...the themes are there. but it goes along with tropes.
So that age group is hesitant to pick this series up..plus a 1000 chapter one..
I started to wonder..when is it too late to begin.
Then, we come across examples like yours, kids introducing it to their parents..and they are awe-struck with everything, the goofy-ness, the simple and effective art style, themes and literature...and they are able to say..This is Fresh!!
Since this is your first Shonen experience, OnePiece was the perfect pick..it has stood the test of time..literally.
More modern ones have been released, and finished, while OP still airs..they are Meteor like in my opinion, they come in, boom the landscape, everyone goes wow, and it just leaves..
Maybe some other day, I don't like em very much though...this medium is interesting that's all..........
Good going❤

Not sure why Dad is rereading arcs though. If he has fu doing it fine, but wouldn't it be better to go with the flow? this is probably why Little garden felt slow. It is a slower arc, but reading it twice in row just akes it unbearable. I reread OP multiple times, probably more than 10 times. I always leave at least a few months between reread, even then some arcs a bit slow. I really like little garden in comparizon to my least favourite arc, but i does get slow at times.
@Iberlos his rule of literature study that he teaches his students: read once for your pleasure, read the second time for study.
He's re-reading the arcs a week or two after in chunks so he can pick up on details he missed the first time. That's all. Sometimes he enjoys it more after the second read(Drum Island), other times he doesn't(Little Garden).
I thought it might be like that. Well, the videos are fun and I enjoy your perspectives, so continue to do what works! But there is value in what he thinks on a first read too, and how each arc flows into the others making you not want to stop reading.
Anyways, great videos guys!
I have an interpretation of the flag, but I don't know if I want to influence your own, so only read the replies if you're interested
To be a pirate is to be free, and the mark he flies is the responsibility he chooses to take upon himself.
Some pirate flags represent more than others, but every one represents the people that sail under it. It can represent liberty or it can represent subjugation. One way or another. It's a promise. These free men will freely unite under this banner for this cause
by fun fact the name "Monster Trio" Come from that moment at 34:50 cause from there ppl start talking and comparing luffy to other and at some point we start putting Sanji & Zoro as well as monster
It is the Going Merry not the Merry Go, that is a bad translation mistake. Go is an honorific term used to show respect to people or things. If you listen to the Japanese audio you will hear them say “ Going Merry go”
Yeah...I knew I was getting it wrong when I said it. My bad. - Dad
@@Arbysarmymany MANY people do the same thing, just a simple translation error like how sometimes they write zoro as zolo
