I'm gonna try to defend Nami's nurturing side. I think it is very clear that Nami has always cared about people, but also has a rough edge because of how she grew up. She called out Luffy asking if he was going to be a pirate like Buggy attacking towns out of concern for the common villagers. After she saw what he did for Chouchou and the mayor, her opinion of Luffy changed and she paid attention that the strawhat was precious to him and offered to fix it for him after they left Orange Town. In Arlong Park, obviously she was always doing everything in service of her village, but I think a moment that gets glossed-over a lot is when she stops the kid who was going to confront Arlong. She has to be rough with him to dissuade him from throwing his life away, but she even goes as far as leaving money for him. Seeing her give up money for this kid, especially when she thinks she just has a bit more to go is a big deal to me. The last thing that comes to mind off the top of my head is the moment between Vivi and Nami after Igaram is blown up. With the direction you were taking the discussion, I really thought you were wrapping around to this moment. Luffy has said that they will take Vivi back to Alabasta. Nami is very scared of taking on one of the Seven Warlords. Igaram blows up. Nami sees that Vivi is distraught but trying to keep it together after seeing her close friend blow up. Nami embraces her immediately and assures her that they will get her back home to Alabasta and that she has faith that they can stand up to even a Warlord. I think that really shows her caring side. I also think that the anime (and live action) does probably a better job of conveying these moments than the manga because of the delivery of the actors.

You don't need to be physically strong to stop people from fighting. You just have to be someone they don't want to hurt. Nami effectively disarms the crew because they won't fight her for real and will hold back when she's around to protect her, kinda like anlittle sister, as other commentors have said

On Nami - Oda has said the Strawhats as a crew are a big family and many of the characters fit into Japanese family stereotypes - Zoro is the stoic oldest brother, Sanji is the disappointing son, Luffy is the dreamer, Usopp is the prankster and Nami is the younger sister. The way Nami manhandles the rest of the crew is representative of how hard it is to stand up to the baby girl in many families (especially the fictional ones). They've grown up used to having the rest of the family doting on them and it's hard to reign them in. It's also a bit of a visual representation of how she's the navigator, a position without a lot of authority who none the less decides where the ship will go. Weak but mighty. My biggest problem with the way Nami is written in the live action is that a lot of her brattiness is gone in favor of that "nurturing" persona which is wildly out of character for the archetype she's supposed to fall into. She's gone off the rails into an older sister archetype. That's doubly frustrating because, not only is it not Oda's vision for the character, but the Strawhats are going to have an older sister in the future and Netflix Nami's stepping on her toes. Granted, there are multiple older sister subcategories (as there are younger ones) but the point remains - let the lady be herself! If anyone is curious about the archetypes the rest of the crew falls into in order of joining just scroll down a bit! . . . . . . . Innocent youngest child, studious older sister, weird uncle, perverted grandpa and reliable dad.
@@Crysomandiaz Strongly disagree. She is studious and gloomy, rather than a disciplinarian or a household manager. She's also much closer in age to the younger strawhats than the older. The only Strawhat she shows a really motherly face to is the youngest, and thats much closer to being the doting eldest sibling spoiling the baby of the family than anything else. So she's the elder sister, not the mom.
I started my OP journey two years ago and have loved every bit of it. Me and 13 other friends have been meeting once a month and talking about, enjoying the time like we are our own crew. Loving the videos, and enjoy the One Piece adventure.
Great as always. Really happy you are still enjoying the read. And I will say I think when the subject of Laboon comes back in the story up you should come back and rewatch this video. A lot of fun things in there that you wont catch till then. Just a recommendation. On another note one element that you did not talk about that I adore from this and that always left a real impact on me is When Miss All Sunday gave them an eternal Log Poise. (that Hourglass looking thing. It was a permanent marker and guide to Alabasta.) How Vivi and the rest were undecided and unsure. Luffy stepped in and made the decision by breaking it. Stating he would not let her Dictate his journey. Right there I thought he showed one of his strongest leader qualities. That is when the path was uncertain he stepped forward and made the choice. This was big for me because it showed definitively that no matter how goofy or dumb he may be. He IS the captain. And the final say falls to him. Something that till that point had not really been shown as strongly.
5:48 The Japanese verb for shut up is "damare". The word for noisy is "urusai". While urusai can be used in the normal English sense to say something or somewhere is noisy, when it's directed at the person you're talking to it has the implication you want them to shut up. So, it is used as such. This is more flexible and general than telling someone to shut up because it refers to the noise they are making and not just the sound coming out of their mouth. This means it also make sense to say it in situations like someone playing a guitar or listening to music on max volume. These are use cases the phrase “shut up” in English doesn’t cover. Saying urusai is indirect. Saying damare/shut up is more direct and sounds like an order, and so it sounds ruder. Both are useable in intense or tense situations though. They are also both useable when someone is saying something annoying. Note that urusai isn't like polite polite (from my understanding), it's just not as rude and shows that you are annoyed. This is used in mostly the same way in my language, so it’s not just Japanese. Ours is a compound word that combine can’t hear + ear together. So, in a sense it’s I’m going deaf/can’t hear anything else -> noisy -> please shut up. lol. Shut up is almost the same as English, just shut + mouth instead.
At Whiskey peak Oda was still trying to figure out how he wabted to write the story. For example oda later admitted that he didn't plan Vivi to be Princess. But that he decided that on the spot. Another thing was how luffy was acting towards Zoro, it was a contradiction of luffy his personality. When nami betrayed luffy... He didn't felt the need to hear her story. He trusted her to be a good guy, and realized she must have her reasons. But with zorro: he believed that zoro was a bad guy immediately. It gave a fun little battle section though. After ehiskey peak oda grew as an author and he had more of a firm griib on the story and personalities
@dutchnintendo94 I'm glad you wrote this. It doesn't surprise me. I think we're seeing the development of Oda as a writer as well as the development of the OP characters and story in these early chapters. It is interesting to watch. - Dad
One Piece was never on my radar until a friend on a forum told me it's so funny you wouldn't believe it. I started watching the anime in 2007, the manga in 2009 taking a break for about a year then never stopped reading it till now. I think that's why I like your videos; you remind me of my initial reaction, things I forgot about.
A little piece of advice: some dialogs/actions are just gags and there's no point in over analyzing them. It's great that you're trying to analyze details but Nami being able to beat the strongest members of the crew is just a gag. She just knocks some sense into her friends when they're being a little too much. Also, we learned that in East blue she was so focused on getting more money for a selfless reason, she was not moved by greed. But old habits die hard so she still likes to hoard money. But we know her true character. She would never hesitate between choosing the safety of one of her friends and a huge pile of gold in a serious situation (again, we have to be careful with gags). A panel that I love is in chapter 113. Right before Nami hugs Vivi and reassures the crew can defeat anyone. She sees how shaken Vivi is after Vivi sees the ship Igaram was on blow up. And then she hugs and comforts her. At this moment, she's 100% not thinking about a single penny (or berry). She was acting silly about being targeted by a Shichibukai a few moments earlier, and in this page she had no fear because she has no doubt the strawhats will rise up to any challenge. So take things that are supposed to be jokes with a grain of salt, don't take them at face value BTW one small and not plot relevant detail I love is that Nojiko used to wear a bracelet and after Arlong Park, Nami is the one who wears it and continues to do so. The scene of Nojiko giving it to Nami was never shown. A reader asked Oda in one of the SBS and that's it. So Nami has a few Tangerine trees, she has her tattoo and she has the bracelet with her. PS: The best part of the Olive Garden arc is when the giants Dorry and Broggy duel because they think they have the best breadstick recipe
Comment for Dad: Real good job with the very in deep analysis, kinda makes me wanna reread those early chapters and see your points myself. Waiting for the next video. -_- Also, did you make the paper sproingy-arm Luffy, maybe I missed it?) Comment for Noah: When Dad reads Thriller Bark, you gotta sing Bink's sake together. -_____-
Loving the videos! I don’t know if you are already doing this but one thing I would recommend is that if you are reading the manga, to watch the important moments in the anime, sub or dub (both are fine in my eyes). Watching the whole series is unnecessary, but I’d argue watching stuff like the Walk to Arlong Park, Hiruluk’s meeting with Wapol, and the Cherry Blossom scene at the end of Drum Island really elevate the scenes from the manga and add another level of beauty to those scenes.
Nami has "Mom" power ove the crew in my oppinion. Two sibling may fight each other with pinches and hais pulling, but if their mother gets in the fight flipflop slap sends them running. The crew is a family, they are all siblings, but Nami has that responsible older sister energy. About the live action: I think there were two things at play on Nami's character. The first is a bit of social justice and faminism (I AM NOT SAYING THESE ARE NECESSARELY BAD THINGS). Since OPLA might end up having a single season if it was not successful and it would attract a lot of people that are not aware of the character's developments, I think Netflix was unwilling to portray Nami as a money hungry swindler. Mostly because you might not have the chance to see that this is NOT all she is, even if you are covering arlong park in season 1. The second thing I think was at play is that they tried to also include some of Nami's future character development in season one, since they might not get a season 2 (at the time).
@@PorkChopsRiceandPeachesit's easy to miss because it's a very small character trait, but it is on full display in Whiskey Peak, where this group of kids set foot on their first island as pirates. I say kids because they're really young for the life they've chosen (if age reveals are considered spoilers please refrain from reading). Luffy and Ussop are 17, Nami's 18, and Zoro and Sanji are 19.
A lot more paper is going to be needed if theres gonna be notes the whole read. Theres so many things that are happening all the time! Either way glad your still enjoying. Its always fun for me to see people that seem to really understand one piece.
Hey guys I started my anime watch through near last December this January and had caught up till April but when I caught up I realised that the anime was on hiatus for around a month and had to read the manga cause I couldn't think of a way to calm myself down from knowing what was going to happen and one piece was the first ever manga I have read Also the look on his face when there is more to the story when the dad is speaking about it It's so funny knowing what is to come but please don't do it in front of the dad it gives away that it may be an important character in the future The hints are fun but you need to calm your expressions so that he can enjoy the story first hand and not have to wait for "oh this is going to happen at some point" rest is really enjoyable Thank you for the really good content ❤
In regards to Nami not having a nurturing personality, I would encourage you to re-read Nami's response to seeing Vivi watch Igaram get blown up in Ch113. Immediately providing support to Vivi. It's subtle but it's there.
About Nami manga vs live action: I think they tried to show her manipulative side in the life action but could have been handled even better. In the live action she fooled the pirates to steal their ship. And she was flirting with the marine to get his costume. But a missed opportunity was when Nami and Luffy were making a deal about getting a ship. Luffy his deal was: if I don't get the ship we steal one and move on. The Nami from the anime/manga would have added that she would get money or something else if she would win. But one real thing the live action Nami is lacking: is fun cheekiness. She way very serious most of the time. While the anime/manga counter part would laugh a lot more and make sassy remarks. But I understand what they were going for...they wanted to show the burden on her. But I hope that in season 2 she will be more carefree and happy. But overall I did like the live action nami, but it is a different Nami then the manga nami
Thank you for the deep analysis. I love the thorough deepdive! Was here from the beginning, will be here till One Piece ends. personally I just enjoy you guys' insight so much. For me, personally I would want episodes to be a tiny bit longer maybe 10-20 more, mostly for the longer arcs, just to make sure your deepdive doesn't go to waste.
@@PorkChopsRiceandPeaches So many questions! What is the one piece (best guess)? What devil fruit would you want to eat? What role would you have on a pirate ship? Gun to the head, One piece or Shakespeare? Porkchops, rice and peaches, why the name?
Omg, no spoiler but i can say it's totally confirmed that we are surely returning to Laboon and when that happnes I'm gonna ball my eyes out like never before. 😭 Laboon's pirates backstory is my favorite backstory in this series. (Nex to Trafalgar and Corazón's backstory)
I love seeing people who were skeptical of OP, jump all in. Also, the Nami thing, is more slapstick. It's a Slapstick trope found in most shonen of that time.
in The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949) Campbell describes 17 stages of the monomyth that inlcudes: The Call to Adventure Refusal of the Call Supernatural Aid ----> Crossing of the First Threshold Belly of the Whale
A friendly reminder that not to believe all things as they appear all too much - think back to Usopps lies in Syrup village or how Nami behaved early during Arlong Park arc. Oda throws a lot of breadcrumbs, and in a way he can shift and twist them as he wishes. LABOOOOOOOON. I love that whale.
While reading just the manga and pulling stuff as you go is good, more research is also good, same with your backtracking through parts you've already read. I will say, your question that he refused to answer could be figured out if you look back through two parts of the story that you've already read. Will I say whether Roger's crew was the one that left Laboon behind or not? No, but the answer is yours to figure out if you wish to look back on it. I know that on "The Drawk Show" (youtube channel), that read-through of One Piece had a lot of indepth research on our own world in regards to topics that the new reader, "Mama Drawk", was connecting to parts of One Piece based on what stuck out to her. You're fully welcome to do your own outstanding research (I just recommend to try to avoid any searches that include "One Piece" or major character/location names). There's insight that can be found without spoiling yourself, so long as your research is disconnected enough. However, you don't need to do any extra research to improve this read-through. Your own insight is unique enough that we'll probably still be back each episode until you're caught up. Do whatever feels right when it comes to what you want to take away from One Piece.
Nami beating up all the strong guys is more like a joke You know like your mom can have you running away even if shes half your size? Kinda like that, shes not really supposed to be phisically strong, but her firey spirit is very intimidating
You guys should checkout Yu Yu Hakusho, its my favorite anime even over One Piece. Specifically because every episode is canon and fast paced. Please watch the english version as it has great voice acting and keeps the Japanese music. I think you'll be hooked by the first episode. Only 112 episodes by the way.
YES, I don't think when any of the characters get strident transfer over. Nami snaps and gets scared and screams on a dime, her volatile nature makes others be on their toes. But I don't think it's just Nami, many of the Strawhats have those moments. I think they felt it might be too over the top, but it's an over the top adventure.
I agree, Nami need to be a little bit more evil, I mean mischevious, in the live action HAHAHA. But then again, they are toeing the line for the live action portrayal bacause if they don't do it right, they may make Nami too cold and unsympathetic? I would like her to be a little bit more playful-mean than actually cold-mean-blackmailing everybody 😂
I started reading One Piece in 2003 in an English translated Shonen Jump… I liked the character of Luffy right away… because me being American the closest character that was like Luffy was Mr. Fantastic from the Fantastic Four… except for the obvious Mr. Fantastic is a genius where Luffy is in the other direction polar opposites… but I never liked Mr. Fantastic’s fighting parlance… for he always got beat up if it ever got physical with an enemy & that’s just not the case when it comes to Luffy always has some kind of creative way of fighting using his ability.
Oda normally hides secrets and foreshadowing in comedy so ur on the right track for nami actually could be powerful. The reason he could not answer bcoz oda has yet to reveal much about nami's origins. That's all.
I’m glad you are doing it smaller sections. I was worried when you said little garden was included in the 40 minute video. As for the live action I agree with you about Nami and have some concern about the rest. Everyone is good but there are issues for every character. Zoro is too stoic in the source he laughs more and while he is more stoic he is still one of the guys. Luffy is too wise and isn’t selfish enough. I didn’t like the direction they chose for Ussop. Is the source Ussop admires his Dad for being brave and going to sea while in the LA he’s more of an abandoned puppy. Ussop is also too charismatic he should have negative charasma stats. Ussop is desperate for attention and everyone ignores him because it’s clear he’s full of it. For Sanji they made him show embarrassment instead of the joy of sharing his dream finding the all blue. The joy of telling Luffy about the all blue is one of the best parts of his introduction arc.
I'd love to watch the other stuff, they're just unfortunately things I haven't watched like the new movies. There are ones too old I can't remember anything (Batman vs Superman) Also, things I've been wanting to forever but haven't gotten around to consuming (Dune (book)).
Nami does have a nurturing personality, but it only comes out with other women and with children. She’s basically a misandrist otherwise but is fiercely loyal to her crew, even if she’s also a huge manipulator. She’s enough of an asshole early on that it makes sense to tone it down for OPLA, since she can end up being extremely unlikable if they try to be more faithful to the manga
Maybe my favorite detail in this section is that as soon as Miss Wednesday is revealed as Nefertari Vivi, Princess of Arabasta, Oda stops drawing her with such harsh angles and gives her face a soft roundness, evoking a hero more than a villain.
Yeah, and it's exactly at that moment that her hair ornament breaks, so her hairstyle changes, too.
Wasn’t that just because it wasn’t planned?

That's doubly frustrating because, not only is it not Oda's vision for the character, but the Strawhats are going to have an older sister in the future and Netflix Nami's stepping on her toes. Granted, there are multiple older sister subcategories (as there are younger ones) but the point remains - let the lady be herself!
If anyone is curious about the archetypes the rest of the crew falls into in order of joining just scroll down a bit!

Innocent youngest child, studious older sister, weird uncle, perverted grandpa and reliable dad.
*mom, not sister.
@@Crysomandiaz In which context? I presume you don't mean all instances of sister should be replaced with mom...
@@arttabletalk32Robin is the mom, not a sister.

Thanks guys. I really love each and every instalment. Can’t wait for the next one!

One piece is so good anyone any age can enjoy. It will bring out your inner child.😊
36:30 Nami beating the guys up is just a gag like she was a violent mom putting some sense in the kids.
39:00 - Actually Luffy is very aware of the dangers.
looking forward to the little garden video.
lol what a great discussion cant wait for more! i wqs mentioned!!!!😮
So take things that are supposed to be jokes with a grain of salt, don't take them at face value
BTW one small and not plot relevant detail I love is that Nojiko used to wear a bracelet and after Arlong Park, Nami is the one who wears it and continues to do so.

Comment for Dad:
Real good job with the very in deep analysis, kinda makes me wanna reread those early chapters and see your points myself. Waiting for the next video. -_-
Also, did you make the paper sproingy-arm Luffy, maybe I missed it?)
Comment for Noah:
When Dad reads Thriller Bark, you gotta sing Bink's sake together. -_____-
@markelovalexander5423 I have not yet made sproingy-Luffy. I haven't forgotten about it, either. - Dad
I always interpreted Zoro's face when Nami says he cant keep a promise, as striking a deep hit on him with keeping his promise to Kuina.
About the live action:
I think there were two things at play on Nami's character.
@@Iberlos Excellent comment. Love "mom power." - Dad
So, it's interesting that Dad hasn't mentioned or picked up on each of the East Blue Crew's pirate vice yet. I'd love to hear his thoughts on it
@@yolnkhaliahino6419 I hadn't noticed. - Dad

Hey guys
I started my anime watch through near last December this January and had caught up till April but when I caught up I realised that the anime was on hiatus for around a month and had to read the manga cause I couldn't think of a way to calm myself down from knowing what was going to happen and one piece was the first ever manga I have read
Also the look on his face when there is more to the story when the dad is speaking about it
It's so funny knowing what is to come but please don't do it in front of the dad it gives away that it may be an important character in the future
The hints are fun but you need to calm your expressions so that he can enjoy the story first hand and not have to wait for "oh this is going to happen at some point" rest is really enjoyable
Thank you for the really good content ❤

Can we put an SBS section in these videos? Couple of minutes at the end where you guys answer viewer's questions? Would be great!

in The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949) Campbell describes 17 stages of the monomyth that inlcudes:
The Call to Adventure
Refusal of the Call
Supernatural Aid
----> Crossing of the First Threshold Belly of the Whale
Nami beating up all the strong guys is more like a joke
You know like your mom can have you running away even if shes half your size?

Yeeesssssss!!!
More episodes sounds good to me! Take it as slow as you like, there's ALOT to cover in the story of one piece!
Olive Garden 🤣🤣🤣😆😆😂😂😂
Pre time skip you have to keep eye on background comedy couse its gold❤ also Laabooon yo ...........
I started reading
One Piece in 2003 in an English translated Shonen Jump… I liked the character of Luffy right away… because me being American the closest character that was like Luffy was Mr. Fantastic from the Fantastic Four… except for the obvious Mr. Fantastic is a genius where Luffy is in the other direction polar opposites… but I never liked
Mr.
