This was the turning point for Batman when he realized he had been inspiring fear this whole time instead of hope and decided to protect the innocent.
That's the idea. In Batman lore, he still continues to inspire fear in the villains. But to the people of Gotham, he shows them that sometimes darkness can show you the light. A symbol of hope born from the shadows. He is The Dark Knight.
@@snakeshadows6993 you damn right dude😎
And the Dark Knight was finally born!
@@snakeshadows6993 Honestly depends, there's a lot of comics where batman continues to be the brooding impersonal and cold person, thus indirectly giving rise to the creation of Nightwing, who's basically a Better and more humane batman. This story takes a different direction, albeit good where Batman himself decides to evolve and not be stuck in his loop of trauma
@@ItSpiatz Batman in general has always been a brooder. It's just in his nature. His cold nature still remains even when he becomes a symbol of hope. In general, he moves past his personal trauma. It's still a part of him, but eventually, he learns to live with it.
This is the single greatest ending in a Batman movie imo. Batman completing his personal character journey by drowning his unbridled vengeance and rage in the water and emerging out as a symbol of hope that guides the city's people out of the darkness is the most faithful moment in any Batman movie. This IS The Batman to me.

Exactly my thoughts and feelings!! No Batman or even DC film has ever beautifully moved me to tears

The cinematography of this movie is on a whole another level. Greg Fraser did a great job on this film.
You mean Matt reeves
Nvm
Dude I'm telling ya, if this film doesn't get a nomination for Cinematography, Makeup, Original Score, editing, production design, and visual effects, I'm boycotting
Greg Fraser just won for Dune
He'd better win again for The Batman
@@Brandon_4272 They went all out in technical aspects for sure. I actually like Fraser's better in The Batman than Dune.
This ending was what made The Batman stick out from being just another comic book movie, idk why people complained about it. It was beautiful, he found out the hard way that vengeance wasn’t enough, he had to become more so he became a symbol of hope and led Gotham out of it’s darkest day. Him falling into the sea and re-emerging felt very much like a baptism for me.
The 3rd act just isn't up to par with the first 2 acts. And Batman being a symbol of hope to Gotham also have been done before in TDK, I think that's what people's complaining.
But really it's still a very well done movie.
@@ThePrinceofHisOwnKingdom Batman being a symbol hope and Batman TURNING into a symbol of hope are drastically different arcs

Ra Al Ghul: To manipulate the fears of others, you must first master your own. Are you ready to begin?
Bruce Wayne: I can barely stand

@@danielhaire6677 “The thought of a world without Batman was unacceptable” those words were so powerful that it could still brought me to tears to this day. That episode alone was the true Batman masterpiece
People say this moment is a lowlight, but it's actually one of the best moments because it's like Batman's metamorphosis happening live in front of us, turning into a symbol of "Hope" from a symbol of "Vengeance".
And the soundtrack is just *chef's kiss*
Agreed, I love how personal the climax was, ultimately not being about stopping a villain from doing something since he had already mostly won by that point and it was more about Bruce actualizing his arc. This is The Batman I've been waiting to see for years.
This is the real batman, something arkham or animated series batman would do
@@MILDMONSTER1234 This is exactly what I think too. This Batman felt like the first time I experienced the BTAS or Arkham Batman in live-action.
I loved it. The boy taking Bat’s hand brought me to tears.
I think it was the change of pace from the dark gritty/vengeance noir phase that was perfectly done that people didn’t want to see it go away, but this scene was still brilliantly done.
2:04 I love how other people are just too afraid to take the Batman's hand, but the boy, who lost his father, who desperately needs his hero, an idol, grabs his hand. Followed to the boy, people accept the Batman, as their hero. What a beautiful movie.

It's because he's the next Robin
what i love about this movie is that it breaks the superhero formula; the villain arguably 'wins' and the hero doesn't foil his plan in time. there is no physical final battle where the hero overpowers the main villain. but that the hero's victory is realizing/remembering he has to first and foremost help people and bring hope rather than destroy those he sees as evil and inspiring fear, because otherwise, there's very little separating him from the villain except that he doesn't kill. and because he doesn't fall into that philosophical/spiritual trap, because he made a stand for helping innocents rather than punishing the wicked is why good still technically wins. and because of that, you start to question the whole formula too - why /do/ we need to see someone physically or even psychologically overpowering a foe to see them as a hero?
One of the few movies that actually understand this side of Batman. And this is one of the few ones where he DOESN'T kill someone. It's actually strange that this can be considered a feat.
In other words... short-term pain, long-term gain?
Although technically speaking, Riddler WAS overpowered in the end. He wanted to tear Gotham down and plunge it into despair/hopelessness, but instead all his plan achieved was the birth of the Batman. The TRUE Batman. A symbol of Gotham's hope, and resilience. Hence why Riddler was crying in his cell as he watched the news. Riddler won the battle, but Batman won the war.
@@gowithmyflow3667 my point exactly -- I meant more that it wasn't a traditional physical overpowering!
And people hated it for that
That shot of Batman becoming the light and everyone following it. It's just so damn good combined with the hopeful music.
Matt Reeves and co understood the assignment!
It perfectly captured my personal view of Batman as a character.
1:09 The symbolism and the storytelling via lighting is phenomenal. The police have failed Gotham, and the light of hope they were tasked to give has faded out as more and more of their corruption was exposed. Batman sees this and accepts that he must fill the role as the one who gives the people hope, as the light the guides them to safety. He sees the police car sink and the lights go out and he realizes in that moment that being vengeance is not the answer. He has to be justice and not just punish the guilty but protect the innocent as well, especially in the absence of a competent police force (Gordon not withstanding).
"Visual language"
I love that symbolism, true definition of "show don't tell"
I didn't noticed that small detail, but it does give more depth to the scene.
Even take into account that in the siren’s final moments, it strictly blinks red.
Gotham is at a low right now. Red overtakes the blue, and as a result, our caped crusader must step in and make a change, and not a vengeful one; rather, he must take steps towards hope. He must take steps towards restoring this now-forgotten blue.
Tbh even Gordon is kind of incompetent
The cinematography in this movie was absolutely amazing. Massive respect to Greig Fraser for this!

Pattinson's Batman/Wayne in one movie is better than Christian Bale's in entire trilogy.

@@deoe2622 not as boring as batman v superman
@@deoe2622 let me guess.BvS is the greatest film of all time?
No matter the movie or TV show, you're always going to get the contrarians trying to be different. The classic movie 'Aliens' only has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which means there are still 3% out there that don't think it's a good film. You can never please everyone.
But isn’t this acclaimed by both critics and fans?
Honestly the majority of people who’s main gripe about this film was that it was boring are just too adjusted to MCU and DCEU films that are based around action and colours, rather than the message, dialogue and themes explored. This movie is beautiful, and is the best movie about Batman yet. The Dark Knight is a better movie granted, but people didn’t seem to grasp the fact that Reeves intentions were to never do what Joker 2019 did and be a one shot film, he’s building a universe that we will see progress over a multitude of forms of media. People just want an easy view nowadays which is quite frustrating as this movie deserves all the praise and more.
I definitely think that just by reading a lot of the reviews and comments on this film, that some people might've gotten a bit too influenced by the MCU when it comes to their idea of what "makes a superhero film". There's lots of critics who called it *needlessly* gloomy and dark as if all superhero movies have to be lighthearted, fast-paced and quirky and when they're not and are actually slow-paced and introspective, it's them trying to be something higher than what they are. An attitude that I think is snobbish and condescending towards a type of film that has proven time and again to be capable of digging deeper and being complex.
@@themadtitan7603 and obviously it’s going to be dark and gloomy when the film’s main character is a severely depressed and troubled individual trying to do something that simply hasn’t worked for 2 years. This movie is a masterpiece and gives me a ton of hope for the franchise, and the superhero genre as a whole, going forward.
What if it's not the tone itself but the film not quite living up to the tone? That is certainly a gripe of mine.
A universe that spans over multitude forms of media isn't a bold idea either and Phillips has just announced a second 'Joker'.
@@officialthomasjames Exactly, not every movie needs to have a Endgame Thor approach to dealing with depression or serious topics.
@@peterfrank3365 What do you mean by "the film not quite living up to the tone"? Because I could be wrong, but if you mean what I think you mean then I disagree with all these similar sentiments about how the film could've been even darker.
Also I don't think the OP said that a universe that spans over multitude forms of media is a bold idea, they just said that's what Matt Reeves is doing with his series. Only where the MCU does it to build to an event, Matt Reeves seems to be doing it simply to deepen his world-building.
The way red and black colour photography were played in this film is stunning!!! I give to Greig Fraser all my respect!!!
The BEST Batman moment ever! It truly captured what it means to be a hero. Batman falls as vengeance and emerges as a hero; the beacon of Hope that the city desperately needs. This always brings me to tears, the choice to help those instead of spreading fear and the character development Bruce goes through is just beautiful
100% agreed, if I watched the opening and thought "that's Batman" seeing this ending and how Matt Reeves finally acknowledged in live-action the importance of the symbol of hope aspect of Batman made me go "this IS The Batman". 0:57 vengeance died and reborn as hope 🦇
The twist of Riddler being a delusional person partially inspired by Batman as a figure of anarchy and chaos is a pretty significant thing. Everything in Reeve's Batman is set up to do something that's been necessary for a while: pull Batman out from under the thumb of Frank Miller. The take that "Batman is a psychopath who is just as malicious as his costumed villains" has been consuming Batman stories for decades. This whole script is about a young Bruce starting out that way, but receiving a wake-up call at the 11th hour.
He takes a dip in the water like it's a baptism. From a symbol of vengeance to a symbol of hope.

Totally agree. The symbolism of this part of the movie is really fantastic. Instead of being consumed by revenge and becoming a sort of villain for villains, he becomes a hero of the people he saves, the kind of urban legend that all Gotham citizens respect and honor as their protector. As opposed to Riddler, who thought he was a figure of truth and justice for the people who believed in him, was rejected by Batman and realized he overestimated his enemies intelligence and embraced vengeance and became a true villain instead of a murdering vigilante. I think that the effects of this movie and partnering with the Joker will turn Riddler into the classic villain from the comics, always trying to intellectually defeat Batman with no morality left.
