    My husband died from alcohol abuse at the age of 29. His mom was a single mom and she passed when he was 11. His dad was never around him, and his aunt took care of him after his mom passed. He was sensitive but the most kind, hard-working, funny and smart guy. I wish he had had a different experience when he was a kid.

      Sorry to hear that about your husband. I had a good friend who passed around the same age from suicide. One of the major reasons being not because his father wasn't there physically - but because the father wasn't there emotionally. Essentially he acted as a bully, and wasn't supportive or nurturing emotionally when my friend needed it most. So after years of being a raging alcoholic and pot smoker, he finally ended up taking his life on Father's Day out of spite.

    Yeah hi, I’m 17 (boy) and I do feel a lot of what Warren Farrell says about how children might have issues when the father isn’t present, my mom and father are separated (and got separated when I was about 9-10 years) but they are good friends but I live about 80% at my mom and so I didn’t have the opportunity to experience that much father hood and I feel that I might have done better if there was a 50/50 or something like that. And after watching this video I feel I have picked up a lot of information which I am going to use if I get a kid

  • @hotwax9376
    @hotwax9376 3 роки тому +12

    I would add something to what he said about fatherless children. While feminist leadership that exclusively focuses on women's issues is certainly a factor in it, rigid gender roles are also a big contributor. Traditional gender roles say that women are to be the sole caregivers of children and that men should be breadwinners. Men in general, and fathers in particular, are seen as more or less disposable to society. And I think a lot of fathers resent the idea that their value to society is based entirely on a paycheck. Although I'm not a father yet myself, I know just from being male that I don't want my contribution to my family or to society to be measured only by how much money I earn for them. I personally grew up without a father or other male role model present for most of my life, and from that experience I've become determined if and when I have kids to be involved in their lives. (I think I turned out OK, but I also had lots of loving and caring family who took care of me and made sure I was raised right.)
    Ironically, the same feminist leaders who attack rigid gender constructs when they harm women are completely silent when men like Warren Farrell address how they hurt men as well. Even more hypocritical is how they say that women shouldn't have to be homemakers if they want to work outside home (with which I wholeheartedly agree), but then turn right around and say that women don't need a man in order to raise children. Never mind that working outside home keeps parents away from children by definition. If only more feminists and men's rights activists could realize that they're on the same team when it comes to challenging gender obligations, then maybe we could finally give fatherhood the respect it deserves and reduce the number of children who grow up without said fathers.

    I appreciate your frequent point (and Farrell's) about the lack of father figures in young men's lives. I also believe that Farrell means well... as opposed to some in similar circles that are just out for profit and not benefit for their followers. I find that there is very nearly as much finger pointing and "shock" about what is now commonplace in men's rights circles as women's however. Along with that comes some purposeful blinding to outside issues that damage young men's success in society, like an obsession with standardized testing in public education and the troubling lack of privacy that young people of all genders suffer from today. Also, as an educator, there are some views about consent here that are pretty far disconnected from the reality of how youthful Americans live their lives. Still, this was a thought provoking listen and I'm glad Farrell didn't push some of his more outrageous viewpoints. Y'all give good interviews.

    There are many reasons why we have families that consists of a father and mother since the beginning of human history and civilization. All major civilizations and cultures that amounts to anything have such families and have fathers and mothers play their role in the family to raise up children. The destruction of such core family is the key to destroy any nation and any civilization. Today the family is being attacked by sexual liberalization (sex outside of/before marriage), feminism, welfare state, no fault divorce, rising cost of living (inflation) that both parents have to work, etc. I think the current US/American cultural is beyond repair. Families are breaking up everywhere. Even among many conservative Christian communities, families are breaking up and divorces are rampant. It is a fight for families to stay together and to raise up children in the right way.

    My friend is married raising two boys and he's going crazy b/c of his wife. Before having children, they were functioning -doing well as a couple. As a mother she became a different person. She grew up fatherless with neurotic single mother and when she became a mother she turned into the same (copy-paste) unstable neurotic parent. Any disagreement (fighting) about parenting /methods must be resolved -discussed in private -not in front of children. Whatever rules, boundaries they may establish together (agree upon) she is constantly undermining his authority, disrupting any resemblance of consistency - making everything worse.
    Still, when he complains about his lazy useless incorrigible children, I tell him when his boys fully mature (at 30 -40y.) his effort, presence (as a model) will pay off.

    Hey guys, I'm a big fan of your workout videos. I admit I haven't gotten to see this video yet, because I don't yet have time (will watch it later), but I do think it's dangerous, especially right now, to be dismissive about the hardships that women and girls actually face in our society. If you've had a real talk with your sisters, your good friends, even your own mom, anyone who is female, and if they trust you enough to be real with you, the crap they have to contend with, every day and every night, is no joke. I feel like boys and men would be better off if we took that seriously, as a starting point, and vowed to treat women with full respect and care, and stepped up to be defenders and allies of women, rather than either attackers or silently looking on, or even laughing. Thanks for reading, and cheers! p.s. I love MindPump. HIIT FOREVER!

      I see where you’re coming from; I hope you’ve watched the video by now. If you’re an ally of women it doesn’t mean you hate men, or does it? Being a decent person doesn’t have to be done by picking a side. We need to talk about these things, to hear not just women’s voices but from (good) men as well; because we all have to coexist at the end of the day.

      Yeah, well said. Anyone whose ever read his books or read his 1978 Penthouse article knows Warren is a nut. A male is more likely to be falsily accused of murder before sexual assault.

      Trust me, anyone whose familiar with Farrells writing knows hes a anti-woman joke. Plus anyone whose ever read his 1978 Penthouse article knows he was proposing incest as something that isnt wrong. Ive bought the magazine off of Ebay and it was disgusting. Stick to exercise, you have no idea what youre doing when it comes to politics.

      Any knowledgable woman wouldve debunked a lot of Warrens bullshit thats why they wouldnt have one on when Warrens talking. Seriously read up about MRAs and if you can find Warrens 1977 December Penthouse article I'd suggest reading it. I have it and he basically argues that incest is A-ok. www.proxibid.com/December-1977-Penthouse-Magazine/lotInformation/28224565 It was titled "incest the last Taboo"

    I have always thought feminism came about due to 1. Undervaluing and subjugation of the female role. A male disdain towards female roles and 2. Control and violence that women experienced at the hand of men.

    Bottom line is we need balance in all things in life. And communication. As a mother of two sons, before I had them if I was single, I could have seen myself becoming a feminist because of things my mother would say about my dad, and from the way fathers have been portrayed in a lot of mainstream media. My Dad kind of gave up on things near the end of their marriage. He was depressed and stopped working for religious reasons. I think my only brother was really affected by my mom and dad's relationship. My sisters and I all married men that could be active in their children's lives and are very close to their kids. My brother has a teenage daughter, but is split from her mom. Her mom's views sound very feminist. I have heard my dad say he felt like he was just a paycheck when I was growing up, and other men have said this as well. On the other hand women feel like they are just a sex object. I think both genders are important in molding our children. Dads are important as long as they are not violent or criminal/ abusive. So many factors to think about. Yes women can be violent, but normally its men being abusive to women. Yes women can be abusive, too. My father in law was military and away on Duty Assignments, and my brother in law who is older than my husband was much more affected by his father being away. He had a love hate relationship with both parents. He was so much more like his father and looked like him, but though they loved each other, they still had a divisive relationship. He had trouble with the law, and took his life a few years ago, and 4 months to the day after his Dad passed away from Cancer. My husband who is the younger brother and was able to be closer to his Dad after he retired, has been around for his two boys, our sons their whole lives, and are very close. My brother in law has two daughters, he split up from their mother, they loved their Dad, but there were mental and cheating issues in their relationship, as well, and the girls and their mother seem very feminist in their views. Interesting what he says I have seen a lot in my life. Every relationship with each person is different. Remember Demolition Man, when Sandra Bullock's character asks Stallone's character sign consent before they do the act? With phone's everywhere nowadays, that can record, young adults have to be careful of everything they do.

      Because being strong as a man is about much more than lifting heavy weights. Mental, emotional, and spiritual strength are just as important if a man is truly seeking to become a whole human being. If a man lacks all of the latter, he might be physically capable & strong, but how will he ever be a strong leader or father - especially when it comes to building a business or raising a young son?

    Nice generalities, guys, but I have known far too many totally irresponsible men from solid, loving homes, whom I have known, who screwed up their own lives. And women still fell in love with them and married them. Males are certainly privileged in every single society from the day they are born. There is no myth about it.
