He may have some opinions about stuff that I don't fully agree with, but it's his opinions and I will respect them. I'm also sure his views were thought through, so they are based on logic that I can understand. I still do and will think he's a person who genuinely wishes well for others. He's an intelligent man willing to help you set your path straight to your ideal future. What does a few of his controversial opinions matter to me? I love him for what he does. Also, I'm a pansexual female, atheist and I don't really pick sides or speak for any of the political ones, because I'm still considering my views. @Stafus And I am neither agreeing with you nor him. I haven't done my research about the topic so I'm not going to speak my mind about it or believe that what any of you say is true. I am doing so because I'm exploring different thoughts, values and opinions, while not taking them to my heart before doing thorough research about them whatsoever. For now, I have changed a bit, or rather directed, the way I see myself as a person capable of doing things. @Fuji_62 yeeeah....I think you are confusing what he is saying somehow if you believe you witnessed a non sequitur. Nothing he says causes any confusion if you are being honest with yourself and not looking for contradicting information. But you do you, boo.
@Fuji_62 Let me help you out. Your explanation of the bell curve is incorrect as it does not represent a hierarchy, it represents a distribution among a population. Mathematically, the function which produces the classic bell curve shape is called the Gaussian Distribution. It has nothing to do with hierarchy. Hierarchies on the other hand do not necessarily have a shape but they do have a certain structure. Most hierarchies have fewer individuals near the top than the middle or bottom because they are more efficient that way, it is a result of a sort of natural selection among hierarchies. In your example, you claim that capitalism is a pyramid-shaped hierarchy, making the claim that there are few individuals at the top and many in the middle or bottom. But you fail to mention that communism and other socialist economic systems also produce pyramid-shaped hierarchies. In Stalinist Russia, the tops of the hierarchies would have been (in order) Stalin, his henchmen, top military advisors, powerful influential oligarchs, police, and onward down the hierarchy until you get to the proletariat way at the bottom who vastly outnumber all the other groups combined. A classical pyramid-shaped hierarchy, even as communism seems to flatten the hierarchy, this proves impossible every single time even when attempted only along a single dimension (material wealth), much less when including other dimensions like intelligence, experience, attractiveness, social resources, and many other things. These hierarchies are unavoidable, which is what JP often brings up by mentioning the lobsters. Leftist socialists with little practical knowledge wish desperately that hierarchy could be eliminated and humans (or any mammal for that matter) could all be considered equally valuable, but this is impossible. It is not only impossible in practice but our own brains are wired to judge social status of ourselves and others at all times. Go ahead and keep calling JP ignorant or lazy or whatever you said, but those of us who have done our research know he is correct.

The ideas Jordan shares about responsibility family and a mans role ect... Has been a part of my motivation to quit drinking. Ill never understand why people hate him so much. All ive ever seen him do is express how important personal responsibility and freedom is. These people that see themselves as victims perpetually and blame society for things in their lives that can be fixed quite easily if they would just try. Drive me crazy. They blame everyone but themselves. Of course everyone should have equal rights and we have that in the west. Everyone has the freedom to speak their mind and change their own lives. There is no reason to ever force anyone to think or believe like you do no matter how good your ideas are. Great stuff only problem is fools often think they are wise because they are too foolish to comprehend their own limitations, while wise men often think themselves fools because they are wise enough to understand their own ignorance. Ya know, like Socrates.
I think this was a very good interview. One reason why is that they both stood their ground but respected the conversation, they cared for what was said.
Why don't you give up your position of privilege Helen? Because I don't want to she says. But I want to force everyone else to give up their privileged position.
Her response was fairly reasonable. The idea that people with a privileged position should use it to lift up others. Rather than punish and deprive themselves out of guilt. But I still think she's falling into the trap of defining rich/powerful/privileged people as anyone who's richer, more powerful, or more privileged than herself. We all do it, but it is hypocritical.
@@iAmTheSquidThing well what she said was that OTHER people in privileged positions should use it to lift up others, just not her. Because that would require her to put her money where her mouth is. at least she was honest even if it did reek of hypocrisy.
@Sarah Die Well, and remember how he said that Nietzsche's sister misinterpreted his works after his death as well. I do remember reading that in a political ideology book I had for class but I don't believe it went into great detail as to what exactly she misinterpreted.
I think a lot of the comments are missing the mark on this one. She clearly demonstrated her reasons for bringing it up as a parallel to perceptions of him and whether he felt any responsibility for misuse/misinterpretation of his own words. As I'm sure we've all seen dozens of poorly-informed incels and other people within the alt-right sphere worshiping Peterson for "owning" feminists and other left-leaning ideologues, the question of whether or not he took any responsibility wasn't a reach at all. His response itself showed that, as he was very quick to point out and correct misinterpretation but ultimately admitted to feeling a measure of responsibility for it.
@Anthony Bergs I hope so, But I will check with you after I watched it again. But the most dumb thing she said was she thought that it was weird and out of reach to compare life advice and communism.

lol did we watch the same video? I have no clue how he handled this well: he was defensive and throwing ad hominem at her the entire time, calling her foolish, talking over her, and steering the conversation away from any direct questions. I could hardly stomach how ridiculously little he was able to actually debate the topics at hand, even when she would cede points to create common ground. @@treyshaffer You are ignorant to a maximum . Random institution? Man's was a Harvard Professor. @@treyshaffer my bad on the institutions part I skimmed over it first read and was also a bit high, but the whole debate she constantly misquotes and mischaracterizes his words and things he's said in the past and even things said during the interview. The first hour i'd say was very obvious she was on the offensive, but then you see JP defending his character as steering away from the direct questions because you didn't like his answers. Now about your second comment, it's not really about bolstering his credibility in a "look at him he went to harvard so he must be smart" but rather he TAUGHT at harvard. Not just went to, but was employed by harvard, to teach the adult youth. Which gives his statements about our higher educational institutions a bit more validity cause he was apart of the system and was even villainized by it. But just being smart doesn't mean you are automatically right about everything. Same way being a professor doesn't make you 100% right 100% of the time. Taxtro it takes more faith to believe there is no God than to believe in one. Watch Tim Keller’s talk on google for reason for God. Many are indoctrinated to believe religion is just blind faith, there are several reasons for belief on both ends for or against God including very compelling arguments and reason. True faith is when you question your own biases and assumptions rather than just being brought up in a certain mindset and never truly questioning your belief. I say this even to those “unconverted Christians” who claim they saw the truth and turned away from religion.
@@Raz0rIG >> Not so. Scientifically and logically, people cannot prove a negative; the burden of proof falls upon those who make a positive claim about a belief or proposition. Nothing itself is equal to negative and null/value zero; one cannot provide evidence for nothing/negative/null. Only an absence can be proved, after its existence is established. When a person places faith in a God(s), regardless of religiosity or denomination, they choose to believe so without the burden of proof being met. *That is the point of faith.* You suggest that atheists have more faith than believers; it seems you're confusing the confidence found in *both* certainty and faith. When you state "true faith is when you question your own biases and assumptions”, you’re labeling faith as "true" which implies there is faith that's "not true" or "false", which hardly makes sense. For example, a woman is either pregnant or not; there is no "true pregnant" because there is no untrue or false pregnancy. Similarly, a person has faith (in something/someone) or they do not. Perhaps by relabeling "blind faith" as "true faith", Mr. Keller and you mean to express a "devoted" or "unwavering" faith in God, which makes more sense while also losing the negative connotation of “blind”. But when we personally "question [our] own biases and assumptions" we are simply engaged in self-reflection and self-discovery - an important part of maturity that’s been documented since humankind's earliest written records. If it matters: I believe in God as a sort of hybrid Agnostic-Deist, allowing faith based on personal experience and a bit of logic. The agnostic in me believes that God is currently, scientifically unknowable. The deist in me believes if God exists, there's limited-to-no direct interaction or intervention with humankind, which may explain suffering and various evils...yet there seems to be apparent free will, or at least the illusion of it. Perhaps we're in a simulation after all. :) Cheers!
In retrospect, knowing the health crisis he is going through during the time this interview was done, this man is incredible. His precision with word choice and ability to follow an argument and stay on topic even though the host constantly pivots anytime she feels pressed on a point he is making. It’s incredible. @Fuji_62 you aren't even using non sequitur correctly.... Your opinion is an exercise in delusional thinking.
Happy (3-months-)Belated 17th B'day, Miss!
(My Daughter's older than you..)
May I say, it seems to me you have a Very Mature outlook and approach, and I'd wager it will likely see you through many challenges..

IMO, Jordan is not at his best here (or maybe it was edited to appear that way), sometimes interrupting, angry?, making some unqualified statements. Helen often showing more patience. But if the topics here are of some interest, maybe watch some other Peterson like: ua-cam.com/video/zQCTeGKHsVc/v-deo.html or ua-cam.com/video/hKUffHXOb8U/v-deo.html
This is SUCH a brilliant discussion. Thank goodness he is spreading the word and standing up for men and women. How great would it be for more of these conversations to take place.

I want British GQ to know I liked this for JP.
I’ve watched this video in its entirety 5 times over the years, and now starting my 6th. Every time I watch it I hear something new. This was a Masterclass from Dr. Peterson. The way he carefully chooses his words to get his points across despite the vitriolic questions is amazing!
Best part of this whole -pathetic attempt at an intellectual lynching- interview was at 1:08:34, when Peterson says: "I'm not hearing what you think; I'm hearing how you're representing the ideology you were taught. And it's not that interesting, because I don't know anything about you. I could replace you with someone who thinks the same way, and that means you're not here; that's what that means."
Jordan Peterson, in his own way, just branded Helen Lewis as an NPC.
I find this very funny
this comment is gold
I feel like that's a very important statement he made. I want to know about people and what they actually think. I want to represent my ideologies as I believe and understand them, not as I was taught.
Gold star for you

Sadly, Ms. Corazon, a good number of people "fail" to see what you see; further to that, another good number of people PURPOSELY CHOOSE NOT TO SEE IT, because that is at cross-purposes to their need to RAIL AGAINST what JP "fights for"...

I'm 40 and for quite a few years I was addicted to Xanax. I beat that addiction and a couple years later I started drinking fairly heavy. Me and my wife had our first child may 16th (about 3 weeks ago). I really respect what Jordan has gone through because Ive been there and I'm still there. Jordan is one of the very few people that fight back against our societies that try to force other people to believe and espouse toxic political ideas. Even if every eventually is forced to believe in feminism and victimhood it will in no way help the people they claim they want to help. The only way to fix these things is to make sure we are treated equally in the eyes of the law and try and promote and provide opportunities for everyone. Not special demographics.

This wasn't a rap battle. Her interview style is phenomenal. She was able to escalate and de-escalate the heat of the conversation as she desired, he was clearly in control of the flow of the conversation. Her response was fairly reasonable. The idea that people with a privileged position should use it to lift up others. Rather than punish and deprive themselves out of guilt.

Agreed. A prime example of grasping at straws and intellectual LAZINESS. I truly believe she's smarter than that. Ideology clouds the minds.
I love how he says there's no point in talking to you because I know what you're going to say she says prove it and he does.

British GQ and Channel 4 news gave Jordan the chance to be seen by nearly 100 Million people. So glad he handled these interviews so well and kept his cool. An amazing man.
lol did we watch the same video? I have no clue how he handled this well: he was defensive and throwing ad hominem at her the entire time, calling her foolish, talking over her, and steering the conversation away from any direct questions. I could hardly stomach how ridiculously little he was able to actually debate the topics at hand, even when she would cede points to create common ground.
It's absurd and frightening that people see how JBP shoots out random unsupported intuitions and somehow she this as win. Maybe his statements confirm their prejudices?
@@treyshaffer You are ignorant to a maximum . Random institution? Man's was a Harvard Professor. He was only defensive because he had to be to break down her accusations and fully explain his viewpoints. She made plentiful accusations that characterize JP in a dark light, and it was disingenuous. So he cleared up the grey cloud in the room. So I don't think we watched the same video, I think you stepped on your soap box and never actually listened to the whole hour and a half. To see this debate as if JP lost is just pure Cope.
@@XXPHYSCO113 I said intuitions not institutions lol. Google the word. Also what's an example of her making accusations that characterize him in a dark light?
@@XXPHYSCO113 Also, it's funny that being a Harvard professor is supposed to bolster his credibility, yet he simultaneously claims that all of our higher educational institutions are not credible, which is sorta a contradiction lol. And the woman he's talking to went to Oxford, so it's not like she's lacking in academic pedigree
Now I don't really care where she went to college because comparing a student vs teacher is just a silly counterpoint, no offense to her because she is a smart woman. But just being smart doesn't mean you are automatically right about everything. Same way being a professor doesn't make you 100% right 100% of the time. You need to analyze everything and try to concur a reasonable and logical conclusion based on your own life experiences. It seems you are not listening to what JP is saying but rather are only hearing how he says those things. It seems disingenuous from your part to not really listen to his arguments but rather paint him as some debate bully.

@@liberosisnow How so? Life experience tells me that’s your tipical left wing radical. Always traumatized as kids or teenagers at home or at school. Bullied even sometimes. Lewis: “I bet you don’t know where I stand on all things”
Peterson: “I would hope that, that was true”
Lewis: “Ok, let’s talk about transgender issues… What do you think I think about transgender issues?”
Peterson: “I suspect you think that gender expression, gender identity, are fundamentally social constructs.”
Lewis: “No. I believe that there are definitely some biological differences between the sexes; we’ve observed them. I do believe that gender is a hugely powerful social structure that we’ve built on top of that. That it is largely but not entirely socially constructed.”
Peterson: ಠ_ಠ

That last line was simple but still powerful: "how would you like to be remembered?"
Jordan Peterson: "as someone honest."
I love his expression at the end it went from a smile To a piercing stab. He was not happy.
We should all be so lucky.
He is honest to others but not to himself. Hence his defense of Christianity.
*That is the point of faith.*
You suggest that atheists have more faith than believers; it seems you're confusing the confidence found in *both* certainty and faith.
:) Cheers!
