Today we're looking at the historical appearance and clothing of Lawmen in the American West. For this week I used a variety of photo archives from the late-1800s, and the Library of Congress' Newspaper Archives. As for secondary sources, I used Jeremy Agnew's 'The Old West in Fact and Film: History vs Hollywood,' (which I recommend highly), and tables and figures from “Criminologists and Historians of Crime: A Partnership Well Worth Pursuing,” and "Homicide Rates in the American West" by Randolph Roth. About Man vs History: Man vs History is a UA-cam channel that endeavors to combine both education and entertainment, specifically related to history. While the focus of the channel will expand beyond analyzing the historical accuracy of RDO, for the time being, there's still more quality videos to come on the topic. For the past decade I've been history professor at the college level. The knowledge and skills I acquired through my educational journey and profession are put to work in the creation of these videos, allowing me to locate rare primary source materials, analyze them carefully, and coherently deliver the content in an entertaining and educational manner.
For each one I conduct an immense amount of research, scouring American and British archives, books, and scholarly journal articles. Gratefully, my profession also grants me access to a network of historical experts & specialists including authors, university professors, and museum curators. I hope you enjoy the end result!
Music:
Main Track: Western Spaghetti- Chris Haugen. Available on UA-cam Audio Library.
Outro Track: Jazz Me Blues - E's Jammy Jams. Available on UA-cam Audio Library.

We're humming along, folks! 21k subs! Thank you all for the continued support. When we hit 25k we're doing something special... Perhaps the first ever Mountain Man Rendezvous on RDO? Maybe another cattle drive? Let me know what ideas you have!
The cattle drive was great :)
@@BeeCurious007 I bet it was I was waiting for 2 hours I I wasn't even picked
@@coleforbes6268 Yeah I hear you I only got in about the last hour
We should definitely do another cattle drive, but make getting in easier somehow
@@lukefraas2948 I agree. I'm going to brainstorm how to best accomplish that.
Coolness must be something that history teachers share. Because you remind me of my really cool history teacher.
Nah bro, not mine...
No surprise. Usually cool history teachers impact cool students. There's a kinship of coolness at work there, and the cycle continues. Eat your heart out English majors...
@@UA-camUA-cam-te2ny Ha! Check his credentials. He's probably a geography major.
@Lewis TheOtter *Otter Opens Fortune Cookie... 'Soon you must chose the path of light, or the path of darkness.'

This dude is one of the coolest history teachers ever
No, he IS the coolest.
My history teacher was a DEA Agent, Navy Submariner, Federal Prison Guard, Private Military contractor, and showed us pictures from the Bahamas and the arctic when he was on a submarine, but this guy is still really cool.
YOU: “Bounty Hunters did not wear all Black Leather Outfits.”
ME: “I’m gonna pretend I didn’t hear that.”
Ha! You do you, man!
@@ManvsHistory I mean, my character wears a Leather Trenchcoat and a 10 Gallon Hat, but that's it. I wouldn't ever put him into these overly complex and Heavy outfits that I see in the catalogue for "Bounty Hunters". The newest outfit literally looks like something a Templar would wear.
How many belt buckles should there be around the biceps?
@@Warm_and_loveable hell man, some of this shit is WAY too heavy. I’ll just stick with a Leather Trenchcoat and a 10 Gallon Hat. I don’t need to go all out Templar to hunt down Wanted Fugitives.
I just wear a black leather coat, a hat and boots, the rest is probably red
One of my great uncles was a moderately famous lawman/gunslinger and he's the model for my RDO character currently. His name was Ben Thompson if anyone is curious and wants to look him up.
Very cool! I certainly think of Ben Thompson as famous! I even made a video about the Bull's Head Saloon, which he owned with Phil Coe (TotW: Hickok vs. Coe).
@@ManvsHistory Oh man, I'll definitely have to check it out then. Thank you very much!
I'm late but is this him? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Thompson_(lawman)
Hear ye! Hear ye! The Raccoon Hatted Smart Historian Man has come back to us to grace us with another wonderful video! Quickly! Ring the Church bells! Let us all congregate at the town square to enjoy this wonderful combination of history, entertainment, and video games!
This guy gets it.
😂🙌 Lemme hie me carcass thither!
Making him sound like a snake oil salesman
What?! Bountyhunters aren't look like Van Helsing on steroids back in the old west.
😂🙌
"Aren't look like"
low key I grind money just to make the outfits in these videos

A very noble use of your time in the game.
Same
As opposed to using that money to go to Tahiti.
@@dino_nuggett4079 just one more score, and we got enough money to leave, right?
A Pinkerton role would be awesome. Imagine solving mysteries in the Wild West (as long as it’s not chasing gold markers)
Hunting down the van der linde gang, imagine lol
@@generalmolotovv imagine if you killed John instead of ross
Pinkertons were notorious for killing strikers who wanted basic rights, so maybe not unless you wanna play a villain character
@@ilikeceral3 believe their known for a lot of bad things but let's just keep it on the detective part as a role
Imagine this guy working at rockstar, all the good clothes we would get
Yeah that would be cool
I don’t play RDO often, I’m just a fan of the history of the Wild West. It’s insane how much research you put into these videos. This channel is underrated, hope you keep growing!
Thank you, Eddy! Fine compliment!
I love both, so this channel is like heaven for me 😂
@eddyrod you might like a game called hunt showdown not exactly a historically accurate game but a fun one
I can finally make my Arizona ranger with the big iron on his hip
almost. in the period "big iron" most commonly referred to the walker, or dragoon revolvers, as they were so big and heavy that they typically were meant to be holstered on a horse and not on a belt.
Big iron on his hiiiiiiippppp
You can finally catch that outlaw by the name of Texas Red.
Name of Texas ReeeEeeeeDddd
In this town there lived an outlaw by the name of Texas Red.
Many men had tried to take him and that many men were dead
How about a historically accurate soldier/cavalryman during Custers Last Stand to the 1890s? Because finding good info on what soldiers wore is quite difficult to find.
I know they never wore the yellow sashes, neckerchiefs, or hat bands like they are usually seen with. That was created by Hollywood.
@@jamessaibot5681 that's not fully inaccurate however that was purely ceremonial
The soldiers you see in rdr2 are pretty accurate at that time period.
There was a huge amount of change in the US Army uniform between the close of the indian wars and going into the "modern age" Spanish America War (toward the 1890's).
I'd like to see this too
I will never get tired of seeing someone rock the most stylish hat in the game.
And what hat is that?
Being a lawman myself, I must say I really appreciate you included Bass Reeves in this. Reading his story and his lifestyle really brings to fruition how one man can really have such a set of bells and NOT alert every fugitive within 100 miles...
You bet, man. He was the real deal.
This guy is why I have such interest in history. He's so enthusiastic about it too
Oh so I actually did a decent job on my lawman outfit I made a while ago
Kali Evelynn damn I would never buy the Dechaux I think it’s called
Man I’ve always resonated with history teachers. You guys were always the most down to earth people in the entire school.
Ha! Honestly, I think a lot of it has to do with how studying the past effects your perspective. You witness both the epic glories and miserable failures of human history, which helps you learn to just take life in stride. I'm 39 and I feel like I've been alive for a thousand years, and seen it all. Not joking btw. Now everything seems like small stuff. The news will mention something about a riot or protest somewhere and without thinking I find myself commenting to my wife something along the lines of 'That's nothing, you should have seen it in Paris in 1789. Now THAT was a riot!' as if I was there. Funny... it feels so much like a memory of mine that I could swear I was there. I suppose it's our collective memory after all... History is a funny thing when you dedicated your life to it.
@@ManvsHistory I think I tend to like history because it connects with psychology. I suppose knowing why historical events happened help you understand human nature. I guess you could say I just like answers it brings me contentment.
13:05 I suspect if he wanted to wear a dress back then not many would have said a thing about it within earshot.
Ha! Thanks for the good laugh, Derek.
Discovered this channel recently. It's an absolute delight to see content made with such passion for the game and the historical setting done with this level of polish and detail.
Thank you, Bimeo!
I did this just two days ago. I looked up a bunch of images of lawmen from that era, (and I made a historical 1898 mailman for those pesky deliveries) and images of RDR to lawmen. And made my own deputy Marshal, serving in Lemoyne. Great video!
Can you do the historical accurate ranchers and farmers
*applies outfit to John*
Just do cowboy vid
Great channel. Exactly the type of content that scratches my itch
Yooo I love your channel! ❤
It's pretty often in video games, especially in Red Dead, that we see lawmen as the bad guys and outlaws as the good guys. I like the beginning of this video the most just because I feel like sometimes it's good to remind ourselves that lawmen, despite how pesky they are in the game and how corrupt they can be in real life, overall they're a force for good. Don't rob trains, kids. Unless you maybe really need muneh that bad.
Damn. There goes my afternoon plans
Appreciate your content man. I can tell you put alot of effort into it. Keep it coming!
I was waiting all day for this. This is awesome!
You know its a good day when mvh uploads
Incredible video yet again, super detailed and entertaining throughout!
Late comment but man what an excellent channel. The amount of research you do is amazing and you deserve every credit you get!
Love seeing how fast this channel is growing already at 20k, hope you start getting sponsors soon
Another Great video!! Best RDO channel out here
You remind me of a younger version of my 8th grade American History teacher. He is the greatest man I know, he is smart and he is funny and relatable to 8th graders. I wish I was more like you two.
Awesome man, I appreciate that! Give it time, you'll get there.
None of us deserve THIS much quality. 👏
Oh but you do, my friend! The universe is always working in our favor!
For the amount of research needed to craft this video, I can just say that it was worth the wait!!!!
Great job friend!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘

Wow, this is very cool stuff! A lot of my coursework in high school & university centered around the criminal justice system and its history and researching its intricacies is one of my hobbies.
This has managed to become one of my favorite channels overnight. Just the amount of in-depth information that you manage to keep easy-to-digest rather than "dense" is crazy.
Awesome, Safton, thank you for that, partner. I'm currently wrapping up editing on a new video as well. Stay tuned. Should be released on Monday (fingers-crossed).
@@ManvsHistory Subscribed and looking forward to it!
0:12 *Pistol whips a cowering unarmed man in the saloon*
Ah yes, law enforcement has practically stayed the same for all this time.
Hey, you need to look at the full context! You don't know what that guy did before filming started!
@@ManvsHistory that’s true, context is important 😂
Excellent research, editing and original content as always!
I just wanted to say that the thing I like most about your highly informative videos is the way you show off your research and sources while keeping that bit entertaining. Being able to research something is an incredibly important skill, especially in these times, so it's great to see content creators who put so much into their research AND pass that skill on through their content!
Love the compliment. Thanks, LDPC!
I don’t know if you remember me, but I was Youngpotato6229 on your cattle drive!
Such an interesting/cool video to watch, always great content man, thank you!! Definetely gonna try that 12:28 outfit!
week two of asking for how to make a accurate military character
Noted. Just have some others further ahead in line, Blake. Thanks for the recommendation, it's on the list.
Oh that’s be cool
These videos are absolutely amazing. You put so much effort into the research not just to enhance your and our experience in a video game, but because you have a passion for it and generally have more brain cells than all of rockstar put together
Ha! I love this. Thanks, Bolt. Kind words. And hilarious.
Great as always.
My great grand father served as town marshal for Rio Hondo 1880's through 1900. I followed up as a Texas Deputy a hundred years later.
Just wish Rockstar would give up badges. The assits are already in the game.
Very cool, Doc! I'm sure both you and your great grandfather have some good stories. My great grandfather was the chief of police in Albia, Iowa. Likely not nearly as exciting as Rio Hondo, but I've heard some cool tales about him nonetheless. As always, thanks for watching and stopping in!
Absolutely love what youre doing here! If you are ever in need of more ideas for videos, maybe you can do how to portray a railroad engineer? Or some other industrial worker. Great work!!
I've been around since the fishing video and I just have to say that I love what you're doing here. It's my favorite channel on youtube at the moment and the sheer quality of your videos is incredible. You've made history fun and interesting to me and I look forward to what 2021 has in store for your channel. Also, I'm loving the raccoon hats, I thought I was the only one who wears animals on my head in this game!
Thanks, Droppy! I appreciate that, my friend! Yeah, I love the fur hats. It's a staple for me in the game (when not making character vids).
My old history teacher is actually a descendent of mr Pinkerton the guy who created the Pinkerton detective agency and they look identical

Oh I needed this. Indeed I really needed your channel in my life. Not until I knew that would bill was an “ancestor” of mine, but now that I know that, I’m so unbelievably happy I found this. And not to say I wouldn’t have loved this channel before that, but now I have direction. Dude thanks for making these videos, absolutely incredible and they bring so much fun. Absolute blast watching the videos and learning, makes playing red dead more enjoyable when I know this stuff, and definitely is cool to learn what my ancestors had to put up with haha. Can’t say thank you enough for taking your time to make this channel.
Glad you enjoyed it, Golden.

Yeeehaw! My man back with a rootin rootin video!! I loved seeing Nevada County, CA on your video, that’s where I grew up in a town called Nevada City! Lots of history there, and I’ve heard about lawman, cowboys and miners always getting into tussles.

Hey couldn't watch earlier had to go to practice great video man!
Thank you, Alex!
You answered a lot of my Billy the kid and where you get your sources from questions in the video masterfully. Good job and thanks.
If I tackle outlaws next (still debating on that), I'm sure I'll have much more on Billy. It's a tempting prospect.
@@ManvsHistory It wouldn't be fair to outlaws to have a lawman video and not an outlaw one. Lots of good ones, Black Bart especially being a stagecoach robber and James gang on train robberies. Mr. William Bonney's outlaw status is being reexamined these days.. All I can find is the occasional stolen horse. His being an outlaw was political as he just so happened to be a part the opposition party to corrupt lawmen.
@@jamessaibot5681 Ha! Yeah, I'm definitely leaning towards doing it next. So much great material.
Just wanted to say it'd be cool to see historical accuracy of locations. Obviously they're not real locations but what they're based off of and the atmosphere.
While watching this. Once again I marvel at the amount of time and research you put in, to making the best informative, entertaining videos on the Old West and its comparison, not only to current times but also, the RDR2 frontier that brings us all together. "Well Done'', once again.👍
I always thought Tom Horn got shafted, by the very people who needed him the most. When they needed him.
Until, they didn't need him anymore. But, evidently he did confess to an undercover, in a Bar, up in your neck of the woods, about things he had done including shooting the kid. Cant tell you how much we enjoy your work Professor. Thanks🐎👍
Thanks, Swindell! Yeah, I heard that about Horn as well. Later he retracted it, and continued to do so through the end. Makes you wonder if he was spinning tall tales for the amusement of his listener? I'm sure the alcohol didn't help. Hard to say. He was no doubt a killer of men, but whether he killed the boy.... hard to say.
Man! Talk about a tale that bites you.
I do disagree with you on one point.
Alcohol does help...on occasion.😂👍
