Today we're looking at express companies (and stagecoach drivers & shotgun messengers) in the American West. For this week's topic I combed through the Library of Congress' newspaper archives from the 1800s. For secondary sources I used John Boessenecker's superb book, 'Shotguns & Stagecoaches: The Brave men who rode for Wells Fargo in the Wild West,' Philip L. Fradkin's 'Stagecoach: Wells Fargo and the American West,' Dr. Robert J. Chandler's 'Images of America’s Wells Fargo,' and James Lynn Bartz’s 'Company Property of Wells, Fargo & Co’s Express, 1852-1918.' For a primary source, I utilized 'Wells, Fargo & Co’s Express: 1882: Instructions for the Use of Agents and Employees Only.' You'll find the link below:

About Man vs History: Man vs History is a UA-cam channel that endeavors to combine both education and entertainment, specifically related to history. While the focus of the channel will expand beyond analyzing the historical accuracy of RDO, for the time being, there's still more quality videos to come on the topic. For the past decade I've been history professor at the college level. The knowledge and skills I acquired through my educational journey and profession are put to work in the creation of these videos, allowing me to locate rare primary source materials, analyze them carefully, and coherently deliver the content in an entertaining and educational manner.
For each one I conduct an immense amount of research, scouring American and British archives, books, and scholarly journal articles. Gratefully, my profession also grants me access to a network of historical experts & specialists including authors, university professors, and museum curators. I hope you enjoy the end result!
    Music:
Main Track: 'Terrier Waltz' by Nat Keefe with The Bow Ties. Available on UA-cam Audio Library.
Outro Track: 'Si Senorita' by Chris Haugen. Available on UA-cam Audio Library.
    Movie Clips:
Ford, J., Wanger, W., Wayne, J., & United Artists Corporation. (1939). Stagecoach. Los Angeles: Walter Wanger for United Artists.

Yeah it would be awesome. You could upgrade your coach to make it more comfortable for people. Add upgrade options to provide whiskey for passengers or cigars, more aesthetically pleasing interior, seats that raise player cores while they sit in them, 2 to 4 horse carriages for higher speeds, etc.
There's a lot of potential for them to add player interaction.

i kinda feel like this should be in the base game as a legitimate role, like you could transport players or wealthy NPCs and say a criminal organization or posse could track you down and either kidnap the players or NPCs being transported, but the combat would have to be slow-paced if you get me, no lock on, increased recoil on weapons, etc. or you could hire other players to help defend you as a guard, maybe make it a role with ranks like the trader and say when you get max rank you could hire up to 5 guards on horses following your stagecoach and there would be a bandit role or something like that and if you go to attack a stagecoach you would get bandit xp and lose honor, maybe a certain NPC like Anthony Foreman (i forgot his name the guy that tries to kill Tilly Jackson in story mode) or Black Belle, but if you were transporting people, post, etc. you would gain honor and maybe add a fame thing. Honor would be for overall reputation, but say adding a fame mechanic would make you more popular in certain towns than others, and if your ' fame ' gets to a high enough level in a town you would unlock some cosmetics, like boots, a coat, a hat, a new grip, etc. i feel this would add a lot of immersion and just over all a different play style, but we can all hope that rockstar starts to add more thing to red dead online as it would be one of the best games ever made. Amazing work man vs. history, i enjoyed this video as every other video you do on red dead. :) watching your videos always gets me in the right mood to play red dead #savereddeadonline

@@polarshoe5078 I 100% agree with you, rockstar has such a loyal fanbase that is willing to wait aged for good and quality content it confuses me how rockstar would still profer to spoon feed GTA online with update after update while red dead s last ' big 'update was the bloody naturalist update lmao at least that added something unique, I can see red dead being seen unprofitable but rockstar is a multi million dollar company with more than enough money to burn on a game that might die out but ... arrrrr this pisses me off so much how one of the best games made to date is just left out during the storm, if anything in 2020 I would have seen red dead being one of the most popular games during lockdown, you could see lockdown as rockstar not being able to work at full capacity with all systems go, but didnt Cayo perico come out around then? And that was an ok update, anyway I wish you all the best dont give up on red dead just yep dispite the lack of content, something will come I feel it

Funny thing: last night, a bunch of random people and I found some wagons in the Heartlands. So like the sensible people we are, we took the wagons to Saint Denis. We send three people to get three boat: a scout boat, and two of the bigger boats. We all loaded up, and took the goods to Blackwater. Unfortunately, there was an active shootout, so we diverted to Quacker’s Cove, and unloaded. We had a lot of fun “transporting” goods! I’d suggest it if you haven’t tried

Some ideas that I’ve thought about for historically accurate RDO character videos: Klondike Gold Rush, French Canadian Voyageurs, and for Guarma, the Spanish American War. The Voyageurs might be hard to do because it’s hard to find a good looking capote coat in the wardrobe, but the other two took place IN the 1890s, so I’d love to see what you whip up. Cheers!

I always wondered about the story behind the Wells Fargo logo. Thank you so much man. From a fellow Iowan to another.

Funny thing about that logo. The shotgun messenger used to have a shotgun, and the driver used to have a whip, but Wells Fargo quietly removed these components 10 years ago out of political correctness. If anyone would have bothered to look into though, they'd have found that the whip was never used to inflict pain on the stage team. Instead, the driver controlled his trained horses by the whip's sound.
      Iowan, huh?!? Which part?

An interesting point in history, not all that long ago, thanks for the vids.
My grandmother told me the 1st and only ticket my grandfather got was for horse and buggy racing down Main St of Laurel, Md on a Sunday. He and another neighbor going to church, one thing led to another till the local law stepped in.

You really need to get into RedM RP! Your suggestions are what they’re trying to make a reality, heck they’ve actually made stage coaches fleshed out jobs. And not to mention you can basically replace your horse with your coach with it staying anywhere you leave it in the world, it having it’s own inventory, customisation, durability, even a name.

In the UK passengers riding on the top of the coach would sometimes fall asleep bringing with it the danger of falling off the coach. This would be referred as dropping off to sleep. a term still in use today. If possible the passenger would try their hardest not to do this for two reasons. The poor unfortunate may suffer injury when they fell off the coach, usually head first, and the coach would not stop to pick up the passenger as they had a schedule to keep.
