Today we're looking at hunters & trappers in the American West. For this week's topic I combed through the Library of Congress' newspaper archives from the 1800s, as well as the 1898 journal, 'The Fur Trade Review', vol. 26. Other primary sources include 'Canadian Wilds' by Martin Hunter, 'My Sixty Years on the Plains: Trapping, Trading, and Indian Fighting,' by W.T. Hamilton, 'The Adventures of Captain Bonneville,' by Washington Irving, and two books by Theodore Roosevelt: 'The Wilderness Hunter,' and 'Hunting Trips of a Ranchman.' As for secondary sources, I used Eric Jay Dolin's superb book, 'Fur, Fortune, and Empire.'
Special thanks to Jay Ungar for granting me permission to use his song, 'Liberty's Golden Shore.' For those that might not be aware, Jay is also the musician behind the famed, 'Ashokan Farewell,' the main theme of Ken Burns’ landmark PBS documentary, 'The Civil War' (which resulted in an Emmy nomination for Jay and a Grammy for the soundtrack album). Jay was kind enough to respond to my permission request personally, and grant me permission to use 'Liberty's Golden Shore' in this video. So thanks again, Jay!

About Man vs History: Man vs History is a UA-cam channel that endeavors to combine both education and entertainment, specifically related to history. While the focus of the channel will expand beyond analyzing the historical accuracy of RDO, for the time being, there's still more quality videos to come on the topic. For the past decade I've been history professor at the college level. The knowledge and skills I acquired through my educational journey and profession are put to work in the creation of these videos, allowing me to locate rare primary source materials, analyze them carefully, and coherently deliver the content in an entertaining and educational manner.
For each one I conduct an immense amount of research, scouring American and British archives, books, and scholarly journal articles. Gratefully, my profession also grants me access to a network of historical experts & specialists including authors, university professors, and museum curators. I hope you enjoy the end result!

I feel like the clothes in this game are too nice, I wish they were more rugged at moments, and not spotless,
Not a joke, dive in mud then it works, I used it to make makeshift body paint as my native character
Yeah, that's why I prefer the 'Work Shirt'. It's dirty, like you'd expect from tramping through the wilderness.
It's funny beacuse back in pre-frontier pursuits, players complained that clothes were too dirty/rugged. Either R* can't get a nice middle ground or we as players can't decide what we want XD
They should have a slider for the amount of wear and tear for all of the clothes you buy.
I wish they integrated a few of the trapper outfits and bits of clothing from the story mode trapper, a lot of the story mode clothing is very rugged.
Fun fact, a Jeremiah Johnson reference can be seen in story mode in grizzlies west. There's a cabin near dead boot creek where a trail can be found at the main door. If followed, you can find a mountain man sat cross legged with his gun, frozen to death.
Thanks Buffalo Macho
"Some people say he's up there, still." - 🎶
Ah yes, Hatchet Jack.
"I Hatchet Jack being of sound mind and broke legs hereby leave my bear rifle to whomever finds it. Lord hope it be a white man. It is a good rifle and kilt the bear that kilt me. Anyway I am dead. Yours Truly, Hatchet Jack"
As someone who's primary income source is hunting and selling animal skins with the trader role I've been looking forward to this video for months. Love your content
That's how I made all my money initially- before the release of the Trader role. Truth be told that's pretty much all I do still (hunt- not just Trader stuff). It's by far my favorite part of the game.
@@ManvsHistory Harriet HATES you. 😂😂😂
@@ManvsHistory hunting is the purest most joyous past time in all of Red Dead, something about how it can be done in solace or in groups, helping out your fellow man by giving him a carcass you have no room for or offering up a bison skin to nearby strangers because you've shot too many while looking for meat. There's a quiet honesty to it, the way people imagine waking up in a log cabin, stepping outside, and gazing at the sunrise with a cup of coffee if life were a Folgers commercial.
@@ManvsHistory that will never die for this game. Tracking down a grizzly, while trying not to be mauled is such a thrill for a game to give.
You mention slowing down in game and I couldn’t agree more I find it so much more rewarding and satisfying my first time I stumbled on a beautiful 2 star bull moose slowly tracked it out of the woods onto the plains for a clean lung shot with my Springfield. Was so proud didn’t even give it to my trader but to Gus for he can admire my labours that bit more
Awesome, Mark! Yeah, that moose I shot in the beginning of the video... I came across him at sundown, but didn't shoot him until about noon the next day. Just watched it do its thing, waiting for good lighting, and getting cool footage in the meantime. It was enjoyable. I ended up giving the hide to a random player that I met out hunting. It was great.
@@ManvsHistory A true sportsman and artist, Teddy would be proud.
That’s the only way to hunt in this game! Absolutely bliss 👌. In Story mode I’ve unlocked all the Trapper’s clothing options literally first thing once RDR2 released. I got to Chapter 3 and left it there for about 8 months, cause all I did with Arthur was hunt, hunt, hunt and turned him into the most badass Mtn Man of 1899 lol. Even in RDR1 I would slow down, and hunt realistically, even role play a little bit. It was tough, cause of course there wasn’t that much detail, but if you took your time and hunted certain things, you’d unlock a really kickass outfit for John which I replicated into his look on 2. So, when RDR2 dropped and we got the smooth gameplay/graphics and spoiled with ALL we can do hunting wise, it is a dream come true and still will be the greatest game ever, until (hopefully), we get another Red Dead game, which I hope will be pushed back to the Old West’s prime or heck even 1830s-1850s... There’s times where I go poacher (un-realistic) mode in Online if I want to fill up my Trader supplies quickly, but I hate doing that. Even pixelated animals deserved to be treated right! But, like you said Man vs. History, slowing things down really pays off and people need to appreciate the details to these games and animals some more. I’ve tracked a Raccoon one time for about an hour (our time) and I know that’s silly for a Raccoon cause I had my .22 Winchester (Varmint Rifle) ready for the take down anytime, BUT a Hawk swooped down and took it out in the Great Plains. I mean, that’s amazing detail and programming on Rockstars end. 👍
Teddy Roosevelt says it best ❤ I try explaining to people that killing the animal is kind of the worst part, because it means I have to go home soon, the hunt is over. Sure, the end game is meat, but the joy is in being a part of nature on a primal level.
100%. The anticipation is everything for me. Heck, I even find immense delight in buying equipment, laying out all my gear, and getting things organized. The taking of an animal, or catching of a trophy fish, is just the capstone to the experience. I go for the journey.
@@ManvsHistory I've started muzzleloader hunting and it really improves the experience for me. I feel like the difficulty of only having one shot raises the stakes... Plus I get a tiny taste of how the mountain men felt 👍
@@seanboyd9902 That's awesome, man. I can understand that perfectly.
I agree and I think my favorite part of hunting the the stalk of the animal, not to long agao I harvested a deer that I could have killed at 400 yards but I stalked it until I was 100 yards and could get a perfect shot.
I don’t even wanna dress like a trapper but I just love this man’s vibes
Ha! Much respect, Edward!
Even if I've drifted off Red dead a bit this is still one of the best UA-cam channels
Thanks, Jones!
I strongly agree 👍
The story about the guy freezing to death with his gun in his lap is quite similar to that of polar explorer Solomon André's death, and how he was found years later sitting guard over the tent where his sick comrade was resting (and where he'd also freeze to death, probably). That and the movie you mentioned makes this a strangely common phenomenon. but hey, if you're gonna freeze to death you might as well do it with your rifle close by!
Whenever I’m frustrated at rdo or bored, hunting is great therapy for me. I don’t know what it is, maybe that feeling of being able to do what you want how you want. Great video sir!
Thanks, Steve!
@@ManvsHistory man i Love ur content wish more ppl would take ur advices honestly The outfits rockstar provided for rdo feels very horrible is like you are playing a mmo rpg with Magic and wild West guys in a mediavel story
@@Bithe_Get Ha! I can see that. Glad you're enjoying my stuff, man.
I love the way you present history. Makes me want to go ride a horse in Colorado, dressed in period clothes. That’s the life
I play as a French Canadian hunter, so this video helps me a lot! Thanks sir, you are the best channel on the history of the old west.
Awesome! I'd love to run into your character sometime. Sounds cool.
Such a criminally underrated channel. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into these videos!
I appreciate that!
Fun fact, the Hawken rifles made during the 1820s and 30s were full stocked, with the wood extending all the way to the end of the barrel, and most were flintlock. The halfstock caplock most imagine when they think of a Hawken didn't really exist until the 1840s and 50s.
Exactly. The Hawken as most know it today would've been more prevalent on the Santa Fe trail rather than the Rocky Mountain fur trade.
I can feel Harriet getting ready to spray me just for watching this. Makes me wanna like it twice!
Have you tried carrying or skinning dead animals infront of her she evens gets upset if you kill an animal near her or approach her wearing a raccoon hat or fox while gus and cripps will like the hat XD
this is the best channel on youtube. the research is top notch and the atmosphere makes me feel like i’m in the old west. amazing video as always
Too kind, my friend!
Howdy, Pilgrims! To coincide with the release of this video I placed some new hunting and trapping themed designs in the Man vs History Outfitters shop (and made it all 15% off until Sunday, Oct 17th). So pick yourself up a 'Watch Your Topknot' shirt and support the channel in the process. Thanks for all your support, folks! man-vs-history.myspreadshop.com/
You think you can do a historically accurate hired gun
Hope your recovery is going smooth. Great to see a new video
@@tjmoore2356 Thanks, TJ! Yep, just doing PT!
@ManvsHistory do you know what horses were most used by hunters, trappers and mountain men cuz I really want to have everything that they would have including the horse. Btw I think you should include a part to these vids where you say what tent to use and what style of tent to use too and say what horse was most likely used, thx for creating this awesome channel and these awesome videos.
Another banger video. Even though I've kind of fallen off RDO since the last content drop, I do still enjoy watching your videos. They are very informative and interesting.
Thanks, Tyler!
I always thought a good way to add old guns that are obsolete by 1898 is to have a limited time collector mission available to everyone where the is a train crash or some similar event where you have to find it. Another way is a stranger mission similar to hamish in story mode where it is a chain of events where they eventually give you their old guns.
Incredible work man. Once again I’m impressed
Thank you kindly, Alex!
Another amazing masterpiece. Absolutely makes my day
Awesome to hear that, man! Thank you!
I have to say, I searched for "RDO" thinking I was going to get tips on the recent update, but instead I saw this video at the top and I'm already hooked. Great content !!
Ha! This might not have been what you were expecting, lol. Glad you stuck it out and enjoyed yourself!
You've got a lot of cool videos to catch up on, @OG Bilbo . =)
@@jamesanthony8438 Thanks, James!
The cinematic shots in this video.... 😙👌
Now I see why this video took a while. You had to capture that footage of the rare and coveted RDR2 moose! Jokes aside, excellent production quality and very interesting. Thanks again for another great video!
Thank you, Hayes! I appreciate that!
Rockstar almost makes it seem the Moose was going extinct quicker than the Bison, cause the dang Moose’s are tough to find 😂 but such a treat once you spot em!
@@GiveMeYourNachosButthead No doubt! They’re so rare, and then Bison spawn in herds!
And they said you couldn’t learn from video games
It's funny.... In my 14 years of college teaching, I've probably had about 3,500 students that have come through my classes. It's crazy to me that these videos (which I've been making for about 18 months) have received over three million views. Pretty cool.
Oh yeahhhh I’ve been waiting for this, thanks man.
I’d love to see another weapons themed episode, focusing on historically accurate common modifications and colours for us to use on various weapons. These would pair nicely with our historical outfits! :)
So enjoy these videos! With the game so woefully lacking in new content, it's a nice reminder to slow down and enjoy the beautiful landscapes.
Actually most underrated youtuber. All your videos have so much work put into them. Feels like I’m watching a history lesson more than a RDO character design video. Great work.
Really appreciate that, my friend.
With all the animals in Red Dead 2, I'm thoroughly surprised they didn't add Otters!
No kidding! Oh, hey Stone Wolf! Good to see you, my friend!
@@ManvsHistory Good to see you too!
Thanks for doing more work than Rockstar, love this channel.
Ha! Thanks, Connor!
Yes another video I have been waiting for a while and great video man love this
I love this channel not only for the rdo content but just the history. This is also just very calming to watch and listen to keep up the good work.
Always found these videos relaxing and entertaining, thank you for the amount of effort you put into these and hope to see more of it. Lovely work! :D
You're welcome! Thanks for the kind words!
I always look forward to these, also make more newspaper vids! Really puts me in the time period in a way no other historical content has
I've had a real bad day, thanks for making it better, keep up the amazing content buddy!
Just absolutely fantastic, Man. A fascinating and compelling watch.
Thank you so much. 😊💕
Thank you, my friend! Good to see you again!
Yessssss! I was waiting for this one!
Pretty excited about this video. Used the Mountain man one as a guide for some of my outfits and will for sure fold this stuff in the looks.
Awesome, Kenny!
I used the guide as well. Now I have a mountain man 👍
another great video keep up the great work my man
the Goonies joke was unexpected, but very welcome
I’m so dang glad you done this! Absolutely awesome job!
Yyeeessss another great video amazing work as always
Thank you for another great vid, always look forward to them.
Always entertaining, and if you're not careful, you just might learn something! 👍
My dad ran a trapline when I was a kid.
You *know* this is leading to a story...I may have already told you about our lynx encounter?
If so, there are other hunting stories ;)
Poggers.
Nice to see you back
Keep it up man I love your videos especially this one cause I love hunting
I really enjoy your videos my dude!
Awesome video :D learned something new like all of your other videos keep it up :))
This is probably one of my new favorite videos from you. I love hunting in both rdo and real life, so to see this video brings a big smile to my face!
God bless and good luck on the Frontier!
Thank you, Casey!
I absolutely loved this video. One of my favorites that you have done so far. Spectacular work!
Thank you, old friend! Much obliged! I think this one was my favorite to make.
I'm loving the channel man, keep up the good content.
Much obliged, Greyson!
i missed your videos and this is the one i’ve been waiting for
YES! I've been waiting for this one for a while!
Enjoy, my friend.
It doesn't matter how many times I've watched the same content, it never gets boring, I hope you'll have more alternative ideas which would include more Red dead online. Love it and hope that you are well. All the best from a polish trapper and adventure hunter!
Always find myself watching these whilst playing RDO myself. Not only does it make my RDO hype spike through the roof..i freaking love the history lessons.
Man i love this videos, keep it up.
Your content, as always, is just amazing
Thank you for this
The intro music man i was having such a bad day but it just put a smile on my face!!!
Happy to hear that!
Hey man, it’s been awhile! Hope life has been treating you real well my friend. This video is 10/10!! Beautifully edited and loved the pics/your story telling.
Thanks, Goonie! Hope you're well, my friend!
Great work as usual man! Cheers
Another good video MVH! 👍
Beautiful music in the background, reminds me of the Legends of the fall film.
Great video, always a pleasure to watch.
Thanks, SIC! Yeah, it's from Jay Ungar, the same guy that played the PBS 'Civil War' series theme. Who also coincidentally plays a lot of Legends of the Fall stuff. Heck, it might actually be him on that soundtrack.... I reached out to him before making the video and he was nice enough to personally write back and give me permission to use the song in the background. Pretty cool guy. When I heard the song I knew it would fit perfectly with the subject, so I had to have it.
Oh man, we do need a single shot rifle in online, or they need to at least allow the no scope bug on the rolling block rifle
There's the Springfield rifle
@@babyvet1409 sort of. For historical accuracy though, I'd prefer a Sharps or a Winchester 1895. Something specifically for hunting
There is a single shot rifle it’s called Springfield rifle
I love these videos please make more of them because I absolutely love them
Great as usual! Thanks for all the research and work you put in to each video.
Hey Sue! Miss you guys!
Came for the rdr2 outfits, stayed for the awesome information and great entertainment! Love all your stuff man. Especially loved the old west stories of wild Bill told with rdr2 as a visual!
I know you won't see this but I just gotta say I appreciate all of these videos MvH. You make the Red Dead experience so much more enjoyable with these informative videos. Hope you have a blessed day man.
Ha! I see this post, andI appreciate it! This one was my favorite video to make. A labor of love!
Yet another great video - thanks.
I’m so hyped. Favorite UA-cam channel
Thank you, Darkfrost!
Great video, I was wondering if you've ever considered doing a video on the foraging/crafting dynamic? The accuracy of the location/uses of edible plants & herbs for the time. The realism of crafting/trading/prices of various tonics.
Really enjoyed this one. I remember asking you a few months back about your experience getting your degree in history, and wanted to give an update to say that I'm now in my 5th semester as a history major. It's tough and I am reading and writing more than I ever have, but I enjoy it. I started watching this channel because of my love for the game but also for my immense love of history. It's impressive how much effort and research you put into making these.
Thank you, Clay! Glad to hear you went the history route! It's a long hard road, but rewarding... and very useful for trivia nights.
Phenomenal video, and all the hard work that went into making it is very much appreciated.
Thank you, Richard! I appreciate that!
In literally every video you've ever made, "You'll want the worn black stovepipe square toe boots, "
Hey, they're historically accurate. What can I say?
Love this series!! Calming and informative.
Thanks, man! Much obliged!
man vs history the legend is back. Been on your channnel since your 1st 1000 subs I think.
Thanks for sticking around, old friend!
You kill it with these videos, fun and educational, keep it up.
Thanks, Joka!
Thanks man for this awesome vidoe!!
A lot of Red Dead players are constantly upset about lack of DLC while GTA gets all of Rockstars attention but I don’t think Red Dead is meant to play fast with bright shiny bells and whistles. I do agree, I think Rockstar has neglected Red Dead however I think there is a lot more to the game than players realize, and or they don’t have enough patience to truly play the game the way it should be played.
Yes. People just want to steamroll through it. They watch UA-cam guides, get rich in 5 days and then complain the game lost it’s touch. Nah bro, you burnt it out and lost the authenticity feel that RDR gave you.
I can spend hours just hunting and I still enjoy it the next day.
Epic video. Thank you Sir!
I love your stuff man excellent video. Can’t wait to try these outfits/hunting methods out!
P.s. You got me reading books again, I’ve always been into learning about American history but I never liked reading until I finished “the American Buffalo” by Steven rinella and now I’m half way through “The rise of Theodore Roosevelt”. Your an inspiration man, keep it up!
I love it! Thanks, Noah. Another one of my favorites that I haven't mentioned on this channel is 'Shot All to Hell', about Jesse James and the Northfield, MN raid. It's incredible. If you're looking for hunting ones, try 'From Boys to Men of Heart' by Dr. Randall Eaton. It's great.
@@ManvsHistory I’ll add them to the list, Thanks!
Yes love your videos keep up the great work 👏 👍
Oh i've been looking forward to this one! hell yeah!
I cannot thoroughly express my excitement every time I see that 'Man vs. History' has uploaded a new video. Great video as always
Thanks, buddy!
What a great historical insight this video gave. Absolutely loved every bit of it !
Much obliged! Thank you, Ciel!
Nice man, I love this series
Glad to hear it!
Holt only tied the bear up because of his frustration with Roosevelt, who had blown multiple opportunities to get a bear up until that point.
Awesome idea a bout the trade fair. That would make the game way more fun.
I watch all your videos about 5 times, because there’s so much informative stuff in them that I want to know!
Awesome, man! I appreciate that!
I’ve been rocking the new fur poncho from the quick draw club this month for my trapper cloak
Been checking daily for this video wondering if I hadn't got a notification, was so excited when I got the notification it dropped
She was a bear! Took a while to get her wrapped up.
The video is so nice with the wise choice of music and the well-educated tone of voice that you do is smooth, here's hoping Rockstar takes notes for the Red Dead online roles.
Thank you kindly, Chris!
Top Knot-ch!! As always!
YES BABY NEW UPLOAD
This is the one ive been waiting for
What a good video! came here for red dead ideas, left more historically enlightened.
Honestly this is my favorite UA-cam channel. Im amazed u don't have more subscribers
Thanks, Alex! Mighty kind of you!
Very very good intro and video, man !
Thank you, David!
You know, that thing you said about we should be able to take northern pelts to the south and sell them for more. They sorta did that in the first Red Dead Redemption and I agree they should have done that in RDR2.
Another video!! Yes!! This channel really reignited my passion for Red Dead. Now I only need to find historically accurate clothes that fit a brawny build character
I would recommend not to use coats unless you need to but when you do make sure it's long and heavy I usually wear rolled up sleeves with a vest on with some kind of neck accessory with a hats like the stalker hat or the bowler hat
Congrats on the Rockstar Newswire shout out!
