    So how historically accurate is the Moonshining Role in RDO? Well, to uncover this answer I've dug into several newspaper archives from the 1800s, in particular the Library of Congress' online archive.
    Topics covered include: The 1862 Revenue Act; Avoiding taxes leads to moonshine boom; 1897 Bottle-in-Bond Act; The dangers of moonshining; Exploding distilleries; Still raids; Historical inaccuracies of RDO's moonshining role; Ways to improve the current RDO moonshining role.

    About Man vs History:
    Man vs History is a UA-cam channel that endeavors to combine both education and entertainment, specifically related to history. While the focus of the channel will expand beyond analyzing the historical accuracy of RDO, for the time being, there's still more quality videos to come on the topic.
    For the past decade I've been history professor at the college level. The knowledge and skills I acquired through my educational journey and profession are put to work in the creation of these videos, allowing me to locate rare primary source materials, analyze them carefully, and coherently deliver the content in an entertaining and educational manner. For each one I conduct an immense amount of research, scouring American and British archives, books, and scholarly journal articles. Gratefully, my profession also grants me access to a network of historical experts & specialists including authors, university professors, and museum curators. I hope you enjoy the end result!

      The people that got blinded by Moonshine might have created Wood Alcohol by mistake, as it is very toxic and can cause blindness.
      This is a result of over Distiling alcohol from Ethanol (Normal Drinking Alcohol) to Methanol (Wood Alcohol) this was probably why most of those affected were the Moonshiners themselves as very few would want to sell poison to their customers as you want them to be alive for a continous income.

      @@Dankmemeslover69 thats because its easy to make money in red dead online even when rockstar nerfed the animals in many ways (cougar spawns and pelt worth ect) so since people make money in the game they dont need to buy gold bars, maybe if your a beginning but if your a veteran on day 1 like me then you most likely have over 60k and 300 gold bars and nothing to buy in the game at the moment, which basically means IF ROCKSTAR DOES NOT SEE MONEY IN THE GAME ITS WORTHLESS TO THEM AND THEY LEFT THE GAME IN A BROKEN STATE AS IF THE GAME WAS AN ABANDON UNDERWATER CITY. gta on the otherhand they got some jimmy neutrons to work on how to fuck the job payout and over price things so people other glitch the boil glitch or whatever the fuck its called or they buy shark cards.

      @@FreeAimDog the casino heist DLC for gta and the moonshine business in RDR, came out at the same time. that says to me that Rockstar is working on big updates for both games, but since millions of people would rather fly MK2s and drive supercars and fire explosive sniper rounds with thermal goggles....GTA seems to be the money maker. so my point is...it isnt Rockstars fault that Red Dead isnt as popular as GTA...it is the culture of the times. Faster, Louder, more booms and quicker mass murders. Red Dead is juuuuuust a bit more of a Niche game than GTA. Amazingly beautiful, hilarious at times (go get drunk in the moonshine shack and then fk around in there....if you havent seen what i mean, you will, and you will laugh hysterically. I feel like RDR Online is full of these missed opportunities (maybe they are on purpose so they can add them as a DLC or rockstar just didnt know) and its such a shame. In my 250 hours of playing RDR Online my camp got raided only once! I do hope rockstar does expand these roles. Suggestions you made here for the moonshiner role sound fun!

    • @ManvsHistory
      @ManvsHistory  4 роки тому +3

      @Jack Scott I've been attacked probably around 5 times or so. Basically you get an alert that your camp is being raided and to high tail it back. When you arrive you'll see some guys sneaking up trying to grab pelts and run off. Nothing amazing, but it's fun. I didn't really say it in the video (in hindsight I wish I had), but the moonshiner role needs to have paranoia as it's central identity. Historically these operations were attacked by rival moonshiners, law enforcement, and even WTCU ladies. You had to constantly be on guard. If your still was discovered you had to pick up and move the entire operation. Plus, if you decided to deliver it you had to take all sorts of precautions to hide it. I don't feel any of that in the role.

    • @crackalacs74

I agree with you on that very much as well, I thought moonshining would feel a lot more shady and touch on the outlaw side of the game. but i just go to the shack, pay the start up cost and deliver it with no consequences. their roles have to interact more with the world instead of being so mission/timer based

    1:10 - The irony is, not too long later during Prohibition, the American government decided to fight illegal consumption of alcohol that was not rated or meant for human consumption by having "additives" put into the alcohol. Starting in 1926, the U.S. government started mandating that alcohol that was being produced, but not the same amount that was allowed for human consumption, was to have ether, acetone, methyl alcohol (wood alcohol) and other harmful chemicals added to it in order to stop people from drinking it. Only... that didn't happen. During New Years Day 1927 at New York's Bellevue Hospital alone, 41 people were killed by such tainted spirits. It's unclear how many died specifically from the additives, but the estimates go to over 10,000 at the highest.

    You helped shed some light for me, on The Moonshiner role in Red Dead.
    I'm getting to that point of upgrades but, only for my still for now.
    I've been pondering the thought of the bar but didn't see much point in it now. ...the still is all that matters...
    I think to this day, certain people have a huge disdain for government, sticking it's nose in everyone's buisness. And that fuels individuals to continue to 'enterprise by moonlight'.
    As always, your vids are informative and fun to learn by.
    Love the fact that a professor plays the same game as a bunch of us do, for the simple reasons of the time period, some historical accuracy and it's just plain fun.

    One thing about a moonshine still explosion, unless we are talking a truly exceptional operation, the still would be FAR smaller than a commercial operation.

    • @ManvsHistory
      @ManvsHistory  4 роки тому +1

      Agreed. It's plausible that moonshiner still explosions were minimal, or even somehow avoided, as (like I said) I couldn't find a single recorded instance from 1880-1905- the years I searched the archives.

    I like the moonshiner role because it's a relatively simple, guaranteed way to make money, but especially because I come from a family of moonshiners (though more post-Prohibition days than 1890s). I do wish Rockstar would do more with the role. I bought the bar size upgrades specifically because I thought it would allow me to make some money from customers, but of course Rockstar would never allow us to make money that easily.

    • @ManvsHistory

    Holy shit all your recommendations for the moonshine shack are great but sadly I doubt rockstar will ever implement them. Although I hope they prove me wrong. Especially with bribing the revenue agents. I've been wanting that feature for a while now.

  • @MrOggy96
    @MrOggy96 3 роки тому +1

    The improvements that you suggest in this video are so easy to implement.
    Take what you already have and expand on it. There are already revenue agent checkpoints, introduce a bribe system and have them wave us through... Literally a week of a job at most for rockstar.
    When we pay to have a bar in our moonshine shack, send $25 to our post office to collect each day as our share of the profits.
    It’s so sad that rockstar waste their time on stupid shit like the naturalist role, and an extra 10 ranks of bounty Hunter rewards...
    WE STILL DONT HAVE A COWBOY ROLE ON A WILD WEST GAME!
    It’s ridiculous
